Sorry, I was too busy downvoting reposts, pets doing nothing interesting and misused memes.

I'll try harder.

Very nice!

A man said to the universe:

“Sir, I exist!"

“However,” replied the universe,

“The fact has not created in me

“A sense of obligation.”

Stephen Crane (1871-1900)

[–]NinthNova 1 point2 points ago*

Basically my favorite poem of all time.

I was going to post it here, but I'm happier that I'm not the only one who thought of it.

[–]vtbeavens 45 points46 points ago

There will never be a comic that matches Calvin and Hobbes.

It's unpossible.

[–]PwnBuddy 2 points3 points ago

Calvin and Hobbs was so popular when I was in elementary school. Good times, good times...

[–]thatguytony 2 points3 points ago

i purchased the complete Calvin and Hobbes collection a few years ago....3 books...weighing over 15lbs...its the best purchase i have ever made....it was a very sad time for me when my local paper stopped putting those comics in there...its true...it will never be matched....

[–]Senjiroh 1 point2 points ago

Me too. Well, I ordered it for a friend and Amazon delivered two in error!

Either way, agreed. It's fantastic.

[–]Punkwasher 0 points1 point ago

Want! Need!

[–]thatguytony 0 points1 point ago

You are awesome.

[–]Lumpmister 1 point2 points ago

Awesome Thanks!

[–]kpence 1 point2 points ago

I'm debating whether or not this would make me look pretentious.

[–]Lord_Purple_ 3 points4 points ago

If you actually like it, then you're not being pretentious. Besides, you're too cool to care what other people think.

[–]kpence 1 point2 points ago

Thank you, I find myself thinking about this too much.

[–]sumitsh 1 point2 points ago

Thanks for this!

[–]peacockskeleton 1 point2 points ago

Thank you for your service

[–]SnipersASpai 0 points1 point ago

Can someone make it 320x480 for the IPhone?

[–]yust 1 point2 points ago

[–]Eurobob 4 points5 points ago

Would calvin not be covered by the dock/slide here? Surely it would make more sense to position him a little higher?

[–]scrazen 14 points15 points ago

[–]stelliferous 11 points12 points ago

Aren't we the Universe anyway? I've never felt like an insignificant speck. I always see myself as part of the massive thing. It feel good.

[–]ianbagms 9 points10 points ago

Because we are made from materials in the universe, you could say that we are the universe observing itself.

[–]tennantsmith 5 points6 points ago

Leave hydrogen alone long enough, and eventually it starts to think about itself.

[–]AlleyLovesYou 0 points1 point ago

I use this all the time, only I go "We are the universe experiencing itself." It's a quote I saw somewhere.

[–]Eurobob -1 points0 points ago

[–]CoonerPooner 7 points8 points ago

I've been depressed lately but this made me feel better. We're all just specks of dust. We don't matter, so what is the point of worrying?

[–]TheFatCenter 0 points1 point ago

Why would our mass and location change our significance in any other way then mass and location? It's not like being a really really fat man at the center of the universe is going to make you the Messiah.

But yeah, one would probably feel a bit better if it didn't matter if one is important or not, and start directing ones energy into something more important then once ego.

[–]Sneak_peek 5 points6 points ago

This one is pretty good.

[–]beenlazy 1 point2 points ago

wow, good stuff.

[–]thesandbar2 0 points1 point ago

Deepest comic ever.

I don't think any have made me think more than these two.

[–]quivering 3 points4 points ago

The universe is a warm and complicated place ... it's just there's lots of space in between.

[–]beskurrd 3 points4 points ago

I wiped my laptop monitor a few times when this loaded up...

[–]IamMitch 2 points3 points ago

Reminds me of my friend's background.

[–]shucklak 2 points3 points ago

When I was 11 I read this and asked my mom if I could go outside and do the same thing. She said yes and I did. I remember a dog started barking in reply.

[–]fingersquid 2 points3 points ago

This is now my facebook cover photo.

[–]_jb 2 points3 points ago

Whenever you think a dust speck is insignificant, remember what it feels like when one is in your eye.

[–]fickle_my_heart 2 points3 points ago

i cant help but be extremely depressed by this truth totally get why people turn to religion...its so comforting but also very cowardly

[–]viiScorp 4 points5 points ago*

Yes, lets compare physical matter with physical matter that has a conscious. Sure in terms of an objective purpose or physically compared to the rest of the universe, humans are nearly nothing. But let us not forget, that while evolution probably isn't limited to earth, the existence of consciousness so far is pretty special and extraordinary.

Since value must be applied to things but conscious creatures, we are by definition the most valuable things in the universe. It'd say it's pretty special, and in its own way, significant.

TL;DR: Humans are significant in the rare gift of consciousness, even though by physical standards we appear to be nothing.

TL;DR 2: People are subjectively worth a ton, objectively, nothing compared to the universe.

[–]fingersquid 0 points1 point ago

existence of consciousness so far is pretty special and extraordinary.

As far as we know.

[–]viiScorp 2 points3 points ago

"But let us not forget, that while evolution probably isn't limited to earth, "

This sentence, - right before the one you quoted - was meant to say that, while it may be likely that more [evolved] consciousness other than us exists throughout the universe, so far we at least appear to be quite special.

So I agree, "as far as we know."

[–]con42scientist 7 points8 points ago

While this is awesome, what the fuck does this have to do with atheism?

[–]DandyPirate 2 points3 points ago

I suppose because it's a viewpoint many of us share, whereas many religious people have the belief that they are each significant in the eyes of a creator.

Isn't that what subreddits are for? Sharing things with like-minded people?

[–]con42scientist 0 points1 point ago

The thing is though, do all religious people think they are significant in the eyes of their creator? This is a might assumption. This comic has very little to do with religion an more to do with the scope of our existence. Subreddits are indeed for like minded people, but I think this post took a few too many liberties in assuming the like-mindedness.

[–]snoopycool 1 point2 points ago

This is actually my desktop wallpaper.

[–]mb595x 1 point2 points ago

C&H is an amazing comic strip.

[–]JohnAbruzzi 1 point2 points ago

I need to explain this to the kids at school who think the world revolves around them.

[–]armour56 1 point2 points ago

New wallpaper

[–]Gamer_152 1 point2 points ago

While I understand the feeling of seeming small in a large universe, I've never understood why significance is meant to be measured by the amount of space we occupy.

[–]overused_ellipsis 3 points4 points ago

I'm being brave - cells are significant to the body as humans are significant to Earth... as Earth is significant to the Galaxy... and so on.

[–]Mwindarou 3 points4 points ago

nah, doesn't fit. if you wipe out enough cells, you are no longer a body. you wipe out humans and earth is still earth, albeit sans humans. if you started with humans are significant to the earth as earth is significant to the solar system as... and so on, then it would work.

[–]Schrodinger420 1 point2 points ago

I read this comic when I was very young, and I remember feeling a sense of awe at such a realization. Calvin and Hobbes was a comic that I really felt gave me the push down the road of scientific skepticism. I should also point out that I studied physics and astronomy in undergrad so this comic in particular peaked my interest.

[–]dissonance_Incarnate 1 point2 points ago

I dragged this picture upwards to enlarge, because, you know, it goes upwards.

[–]Lizardizzle 0 points1 point ago

I never understood this one as a kid. I thought Calvin was trying to say that he was yelling AT a dust speck. I was confused.

[–]bunnyish 0 points1 point ago

Thanks for the new desktop background.

[–]Tanory07 0 points1 point ago

You think you're insignifficant? Think about how the dust specks must feel!

[–]brumbrum21 0 points1 point ago

This is now my Facebook timeline cover photo

[–]What_isGoingOn 0 points1 point ago

and i have found a new desktop background, thanks

[–]RideMTBepically 0 points1 point ago

My favorite comic, the best present I've received was the complete collection.

[–]fnupvote89 0 points1 point ago

If you zoom in and out on this picture by clicking and holding and dragging your mouse in and out, it looks like the stars twinkle.

[–]jpaul3211 0 points1 point ago

Yes, but the significance of life arising from life-less atoms, to me, seems significant. There are also arrangements of atoms that can somehow reflect upon themselves through neural and chemical pathways. Perhaps I'm wrong and this type of thing is common among the stars.

[–]ahennem 0 points1 point ago

This shall be my new wallpaper!

[–]tubig 0 points1 point ago

The comic is sorta amusing, but it's flawed if the idea is that a dust speck isn't significant. You don't need to be large to be significant. And as far as life is considered, life is significant because you give it significance, and when you give it significance, you become significant. i.e. I'm not too happy with this pessimistic illogical narrow-minded viewpoint on life and I reject it, and by rejecting it, I make the comic insignificant

[–]GrimmRevelation 0 points1 point ago

My new wallpaper

[–]SoulOfGinger 0 points1 point ago

Dust spec? Be lucky if he was a quark's quark.

[–]Bunyungtung 0 points1 point ago

What makes you think we're even that significant.

[–]Kuzzo -1 points0 points ago

Am I the only one who read "Scientific" and was confused?

[–]Wilhelm_Stark -5 points-4 points ago

Jesus you people are depressing. I'm an Atheist too, but at least I have a sense of self worth.
