        As much as I hate /r/atheism, i do understand why it is as it is. Think about it - there is only so many ways that you can say "i do not believe in a superhuman being or force that governs life" before the community either dies or becomes militant about their disbelief.         There was a post awhile back explaining one theory as to why r/atheism is full of assholes. It basically came down to having to hide your thoughts and disagreements with theists in real life, while being able to release that stress somewhere with people that agree with you. That place is r/atheism. Coming off as an asshole is kind of hard to avoid sometimes. Just my/that other guy's thoughts.

          Yea, I looked in to it more, and it seems that it is indeed a popularity contest.

          I could remove every subscription I have, though, and still get /r/all level submissions. Then, when I add the ones I like and "remove" r/atheism, then it would be more tailored to my desires without the need for the default sub-reddits.

            Seriously. I'm an atheist but I'm not going to walk around shoving people's faces in my beliefs and kicking anybody down that doesn't agree with me. I mean that's one of the main things /r/atheism hates about Christians and yet they do it ten thousand times as much as they do? Why?             I wouldn't mind being subscribed to that subreddit, if the people there acted like you or any of the Atheists I know - most, if not all of the Atheists I know are the most level headed people in my friendship group. I can have a civilised conversation with them about religion and we can end up still disagreeing but having a greater understanding of what the other side thinks, and are better off for it.

            Try repeating any of what you said to /r/Atheism, and most of them will give you 100 reasons why their belief is superior to everyone else's and why religions are flawed.

            It's a shame that while society accepts that you can't judge a race based on the actions of some within it, and that not all Muslims are terrorists, it treats Christians (and I'm not singling us out here, I just can't speak for other faiths) all as Evangelical delusionists, bent on forcing their religion on other people.

            They act like every church is Westboro Baptist Church and it is nowhere close to that. There are tolerant people in every belief. Not all Monotheists are gay-bashers and they sure as hell don't tell everybody why they are going to hell.               Perhaps it's a case of people using /r/atheism as a means of venting their frustrations towards certain aspects of religion and it's followers, which I completely understand, some things just rub you the wrong way, and you're going to want to vent about it, and if people are going to do that one way or the other, wouldn't you rather them do it within their own subreddit, that way if you don't like what's being said at least you have the the option to unsubscribe? I'm thinkin the sub is just too vague, maybe we need /r/angryatheist and /r/calmatheist so people can express their beliefs with similar company.

                  EDIT: Despite the automatic nature of default subreddits, the admins still approve or disapprove them. They also bypass the automated process with some subreddits (r/atheism and r/askscience come to mind).

                  Default subreddits are most definitely chosen. There may be an automatic process, but they are still approved, which is a choice.

                  /r/askscience was chosen to be default, it wasn't automatic. /r/atheism was chosen to be non-default, and then re-chosen to be default again. These were very protracted moves by the admins, default subreddits are not completely automatic.

                      I saw default Reddit for the first time in what must've been a year. They've added a lot of default subreddits since I made my account (2yr club). I'm amazed at how much things have changed around here in such a small time.

                      I don't understand why atheism is a default reddit either, I'm an atheist but it just seems like such a strange thing to have dominating the front page along with pictures of animals.

                      It is. The default subreddits are the 20 with the highest subscribers. The issue then, is that since people are put them in by default, the top 20 when that was instated, will be the top 20 for forever. Most likely, anyway.

                      No, there is a disparity between the top 20. The reason it's an issue is that people don't often unsubscribe from the subreddits, so the top 20 have a lot more traffic and are much better known. You can easily unsubscribe, but most don't.

                                  the night before i signed up, i was looking through the subreddits, intending to add the ones i like to google reader, since i had almost no intention of commenting (then again, here i am). then i made an account, thinking "maybe i can make one feed with all of them?" (...btw can you? i tried but it didn't work.)

                                  I started on imgur, which was a lovely community full of friendly, caring, supportive individuals who all just wanted to look at pictures of cats, then I came to reddit, where I was shown dead bodies, disturbing fetish pictures, and was downvoted into oblivion for reasons I don't quite understand. I have been transformed from a happy carefree individual to a morbid, cynical redditor. Oh how I yearn for for the days of old, before I created an account.
