Coincidentally, this is also his imitation of Helen Keller getting to know someone.

[–]Gramma42ton 79 points80 points ago

You sir, are going to hell for that. Also, I will be joining you.

[–]jgood911 22 points23 points ago

I'll save you a seat, Bro Montana.

Verbatim conversation with a customer not 2 hours ago...

Are you close to Jesus, Ratsta?

No Sir, I’m not.

I feel sorry for you. He’s coming any day now, very soon, and only those that are close to him will go to heaven.

That’s the risk I take as a heathen, Sir.

Hell is spending eternity with a fundie.

[–]GetSchooled 12 points13 points ago

As a member of a more liberal Christian denomination (WAIT, Let me finish!), I will be spreading this term (fundie)--particularly since it looks like a compound word.

Also, OP, I hope you add something snarky that causes the target fundie to reflect. They're usually pretty awful at that when put on the spot.

Also: I know I'll be getting downvoted for being "christian," but just wanted to show a little support anyway. Please don't punish me too bad.

[–]FrodoTheHobo 9 points10 points ago

No downvotes for being christian, muslim nor w/e. Downvotes are for when your content is potato.

[–]thirdegree 6 points7 points ago

Upvote for potato content.

Edit: The phrase "patato content."

[–]Alacritous 1 point2 points ago

Fundie is short for Fundamentalist.

[–]GetSchooled 0 points1 point ago

I understood, but thank you.

[–]cephalgia 1 point2 points ago

On the contrary. Upvote to you for not being a fundie :)

[–]kent_eh 4 points5 points ago

I read that in a British accent and visualized you as one of the shop assistants in "Are you being served"

[–]ratsta 1 point2 points ago

Mr Ratsta! Are you free?

flounces I'm freeeee!!

[–]rplan039 0 points1 point ago

What an unfortunate name to have, ratsta.

[–]tunapepper 0 points1 point ago

Where the fuck do you people live?

[–]Hoodooz39 0 points1 point ago

I had a great-aunt whom I only saw at family gatherings once a year or so. Picture your typical southern, old, religious lady, ancient, stooped over on a cane, glass-bottle-glasses that made her eyes look huge, grey hair up in a bun.

I tried to avoid talking to her, but she would always seek me out and grab my elbow with her talon-like fingers and she'd say, Have you been saved yet?" in a tone that foreshadowed the imminent rapture. I never knew weather to lie or what, so I'd just say, "No,"

Then she would tear up and say, "The times 'a comin'!!"

That was the scariest little old lady....

[–]armheadflujab 35 points36 points ago

Being threatened with hell is like being threatened with Azkaban.

[–]GentlemanREX[S] 35 points36 points ago

[–]bellabob 1 point2 points ago

Are you fucking Sirius?

[–]Paranoidexboyfriend 0 points1 point ago

Prison Mike told me all about it. That dude is a badass. I heard he kidnapped the president's son. He never got caught, neither!

[–]mindbleach 0 points1 point ago

[–]captainfarts 31 points32 points ago

Heres 's the thing. I doubt this is novel, but if there is a Hell why would Satan torture souls? Wouldn't you think if he still had a vendetta against God and Heaven he'd just build a massive army of damned souls? Like, he'd nurture his breathren like Saruman and the Urek-Hai? What fun is shooting fish in a barrel for eternity?

[–]buster2Xk 35 points36 points ago

Satan does not rule over hell and punish the souls. The idea is that he is being punished there too, along with his followers.

[–]GentlemanREX[S] 58 points59 points ago

maybe if he cleaned up the place every so often, it wouldn't such torture to live there.

At least get the A/C fixed. Amirite?

[–]Megapigeon 12 points13 points ago

But if he's powerless then what makes him the devil? Why is he so evil if he's just there being punished like every other sucker?

casually mentions that god kills a lot more people than the devil in the bible

[–]buster2Xk 10 points11 points ago

I didn't say it made sense.

[–]TheInexorableTruth 0 points1 point ago

No one who has sense would claim it does.

[–]Condawg 5 points6 points ago

According to scripture, Lucifer was initially an angel. He was banished from heaven for aspiring to become God or something to that effect. He wanted to overrule God's rule and take over the throne, essentially, so he was sent to live in pain and agony for all eternity.

[–]Solkre 4 points5 points ago

He just wanted to sit in the captain's chair.

[–]Megapigeon 9 points10 points ago

Sounds very benevolent! Good old Christianity.

[–]jw255 1 point2 points ago

So how come the devil gets blamed for everything if he's just another damned soul?

[–]boisseaumr 2 points3 points ago

Snakes and naked people.

[–]Condawg 1 point2 points ago

As buster2xk said,

I didn't say it made sense.

[–]IndianaCD 1 point2 points ago

It was written "I have seen Satan falling from the sky like a shooting star." The Heirarchy was The Trinity (God, Jesus, Holy Sprit) and then Lucifer. It was said that Lucifer's ego overcame him and he wanted to be equal with God. That he didn't think 2nd best was enough. So he gathered an army of angels to fight for power and God banished him from his heaven and sent them to reign there. Or at least that's what my philosophy professed told us.

[–]Condawg 0 points1 point ago

Thanks for the further clarification. It's been a while since I've picked up a bible. Or talked to a philosophy professor.

[–]SpacemanBrown 0 points1 point ago

so he was sent to live in pain and agony for all eternity.

this is not in the bible. satan is destroyed along with hell at the end of jesus christ's 1000 year reign

[–]You_and_I_in_Unison 2 points3 points ago

It's fairly common amongst theologians, not average christians, that a major part of the suffering of hell is being totally apart from God. Having no spiritual/mental whatever connection to God, it's like having your mind cut off from knowing any good, I don't know it's hard to explain. So he's constantly in hell even though not neccesarily being actively tortured in hell. And his evil has always been by God's allowance, He's all powerful. He has allowed the devil to do evil things, like he has with humans, so God can give them a choice and free will, then he'll be in hell with the rest in the end times. All this is to bring God glory, the meaning of all existence according to the bible.

[–]davdev 1 point2 points ago

that a major part of the suffering of hell is being totally apart from God. Having no spiritual/mental whatever connection to God

So almost like exactly like how I am now. Cool by me

[–]doctor_ambiguous 0 points1 point ago

This is a common misconception. Hell is not the complete separation from God. Hell is the embodiment of all of God's wrath accumulated over the ages. Why would hell be torturous to a people who never believed in God to be totally separated from Him? Satan is not in hell or confined there at the moment, but will be thrown there at the end times. If you look at Job where you're getting the allowing the devil to do evil things, it says that Satan was amongst the angels in that "conference" of sorts in heaven. Rather than being totally apart from God it is the full presence of God's wrath.

[–]SpacemanBrown 0 points1 point ago

Satan's not there until after Armageddon.

[–]captainfarts 3 points4 points ago

Ok. Then that makes stuff that people say like "dark prince" and Hell's throne and the like even funnier. That being saud what about Satan's magic tricks like corrupting people on Earth? What about possession? Speaking of possession why does Satan always seem to possess children and old people? Satan sounds like a 70s era Marvel Comics villain. Satan is Baron Zemo.

[–]ginx2666 0 points1 point ago

In my fairy tales Satan IS amassing army of damned souls and he's going to get his revenge.

[–]nikipinz 0 points1 point ago

So...I wonder who exactly is doing the punishing, then?

[–]tunapepper 0 points1 point ago

The idea is

You mean one of a million ideas.

[–]none_humbler 5 points6 points ago

Poor Satan! See, it's Hell for him, too: "I'm so tired of burning these motherfuckers alive! Jesus titty-fucking Christ!"

[–]ScubaPlays 1 point2 points ago

I just assumed he got his jollies off torturing people. Also God is an ego maniac who likes to punish people for not worshiping him. I have a sick view about these things, but it also makes more sense.

[–]Punkmaffles 4 points5 points ago

Actually you are correct, in the bible god kills millions or well thousands.

Lucifer kills like 4.

[–]SpacemanBrown 0 points1 point ago

all those that were killed were because of what satan did to humanity and messed things up so from a point of view, every death was due to satan

[–]MustangMark83 0 points1 point ago

I don't worship god, and he has never punished me. More liberal spin on our religion? Go on...

[–]uneditablepoly 1 point2 points ago

I would totally fight in Satan's undead army! Dude! Yeah, let's take back the heavens! Who's with me! Let's start training now! We can be officers immediately!

But Hell does exist. There's plenty of them.

Hell, Arizona

Hell, California

Hell, Michigan

Hell, Grand Cayman

Hell, Norway

That's perfect. List them and ask which one.

[–]spacemanspiff30 9 points10 points ago

The worst one has to be in Arizona. Really, anywhere in Arizona must be like hell since you are surrounded by nutjobs and the politicians are worse.

I feel for those few sane Arizonians who are surrounded by crazy racist white people.

"Your conscience will cease existing once you die" could be a retort

[–]none_humbler 7 points8 points ago

Also, your consciousness will cease to exist, nay?

[–]Kvel2D 6 points7 points ago

I usually explain that emotions largely depend on hormones and some other stuff i.e. things from the physical world. So, I won't be able to feel anything in hell, because I don't have the access to my body. Is there some gibberish excuse in the Bible for this?

[–]splathercus 3 points4 points ago

Since you were wondering, yes - Christians largely believe that when Jesus returns, everyone will get a new body. There's some verse in the Bible somewhere about getting bodies prepared for destruction or something. Dead and living Christians get a new body to live forever in God's new universe, and everyone else gets a new body to be tortured forever in hell with. Hell is usually described among Christians as a place where "there will be weeping and gnashing of teeth," and "men will seek death, but death will flee from them," these phrases being paraphrased from the Bible.

So basically, the Christian idea is you get a new, indestructible body that is so you can be subject to an eternity of pain so bad you want to die, but you can't.

[–]boisseaumr 1 point2 points ago

Sparknotes on religion.

[–]CompoundMix 7 points8 points ago

Now why would a loving God wish that on any of his creations?

[–]doncajon 4 points5 points ago

his love can be tough at times. just ask his son.

anyhow, what evidence is there that he's even supposed to be good and loving, other than being praised as such by his wordly servants?

[–]quigley007 1 point2 points ago

what evidence is there that he's even supposed to be good and loving

Huh, never thought of it that way before. Have an up-boat!

[–]JarJarBinks4Ever 1 point2 points ago

This depends on what denomination you're a part of. Many (maybe most) mainline protestants reject the idea of humans beings resurrected and living on Earth. Also, most "casual Christians" who aren't into the theology know nothing about this concept.

[–]splathercus 2 points3 points ago

Well, I don't know your experience with it, but I would like to think I've met a statistically significant sample of "mainline" protestants, since those are the only Christians I've ever really interacted with. The "new heavens and new earth," is far more common a concept than you may realize. It is true that many people don't know specific details about their religion, but a core tenet commonly preached from all of the many churches I've attended over the years is that True Christians will someday be resurrected along with Jesus - physically resurrected, to live in a re-created (read: perfected, i.e. no sin or diseases or whatever) heavens (read: universe) and earth.

I spent several years working at a Christian camp which was attended by ~1000 people per week, and this was something everyone talked about and accepted (when conversations drifted that way, anyway). I'm not trying to impress you with numbers, I just want to suggest that this belief may not be as uncommon as you think.

[–]kent_eh 1 point2 points ago

True Christians will someday be resurrected along with Jesus

Which will really suck for the True Hindus. True Muslims, True Buddhists...

"We're more special than all of them, because we love Jesus"... Blech

[–]jw255 0 points1 point ago

If God was a coach, he would have been fired a long time ago. How many chances does he need to create a perfect world? Based on his track record, he'll fuck up heaven too.

[–]arachnopussy 0 points1 point ago

I have never met any protestant, or Christian in general, who didn't know about/believe in the 2nd coming & resurrection.

[–]libre-m 12 points13 points ago

I take it you've seen this link?. Josh Thomas: "As an Atheist, having a christian threaten me with hell is like having a hippy threaten to punch me in my aura."

[–]Ywen 4 points5 points ago

I know another one in that spirit: "Threatening an atheist with hell is like threatening a legless cripple to break his knees".

[–]boisseaumr 8 points9 points ago

TIL legless cripples don't believe in knees.

[–]SovietK 2 points3 points ago

As the Earth moves away from the Sun, towards aphelion, 152.6 million kilometers from warmth, I face the prospect of enduring the bitter cold of another Scottish summer. Is hell hot? Then let me in!

[–]none_humbler 4 points5 points ago

He said, "kilometers." That's so cute. They are like baby miles!

[–]NixonsGhost 10 points11 points ago

Megameters.

The metric system just owned your shit.

[–]Vaughn 3 points4 points ago

152,6 gigameters.

[–]IronChariots 3 points4 points ago

You know, despite the fact that I absolutely do not believe in Hell or Heaven or God or magic or unicorns or anything...
The thought of Hell does scare me sometimes. Just the concept of eternal and brutal torture, with no hope of escape, ever. I can't help but think "I know there probably isn't, but what if there is a Hell? /shudder"
I feel it's totally irrational of me to worry about something that doesn't exist, but it still happens from time to time.

[–]indorri 8 points9 points ago

Hence why it's so effective.

My coping strategy is that, knowing it's so effective, realise what it's used for. Realise the horror unleased on the world by a populace cowed by fear of punishment, coerced into blind obedience. Know that, for the very reason that it influences the basest desires, that it is a dangerous and evil idea. That it is the very seat of authoritarianism, and from that seat springs forth the greatest evils of the world: the mass genocides, the Holocaust, the Crusades, war of every fashion.

Know that blind obedience, including out of fear of punishment though it is not the only motivator to obey, is, to borrow Christian terminology, the original sin of mankind. Not pride, but the exact thing religions like these say we should do instead: unthinkingly obey.

And utterly reject it.

[–]IronChariots 2 points3 points ago

Yeah. And despite the fact that, intellectually, I do know that's why they invented Hell, despite the fact that I understand what it's used for... it still bothers me. No wonder it works so well on people who actually believe in it.

[–]GentlemanREX[S] 4 points5 points ago

if there is a creator who is wise and just, you have nothing to fear.

[–]IronChariots 0 points1 point ago

Ah, but if there is a creator there is no particular reason to suspect it is benevolent. It is equally (un)likely that it'll be cruel, or a vindictive bastard.

[–]Patze 3 points4 points ago

If anyone ever told me I would go to hell, I would ask "Which one?"

And for an example if it was Christian hell, then I would be confused since I would be going to Muslim hell too and more confused since how Chinvat Bridge would fit in all of this.

In name of simplicity lets leave Bardo, Samsara and Hades out of this completely.

[–]JarJarBinks4Ever 4 points5 points ago*

I actually appreciate when Christians threaten me with hell. If they honestly believe I'm going to hell, they would be complete assholes if the didn't try to convert me. It's like seeing a truck about to hit a deaf person and not pushing him out of the way.

[–][deleted] 1 point2 points ago

As a deaf person who was hit by a truck, let me tell you, it's not funny.

[–]3D_Dot_Soul 3 points4 points ago

"But why is the rum gone?"

[–]Remnance627 2 points3 points ago

[–]theholyevil 2 points3 points ago

There isn't a day that goes by that I hope I am wrong about hell. When you really think about what if..... what is heaven if all your loved ones are in pain for the rest of their life? What kind of heaven would that be knowing that everyone that isn't lucky enough to grow up in a christian home is going to spend forever in a torture chamber.

[–]Slambino 2 points3 points ago

I was in Alabama once and a lady yelled at me "You're going to hell boy!"

I said "If you really want to scare me say something like "Your return ticket has been cancelled""

  • The mighty Bill Hicks

[–]4r10r5 4 points5 points ago

the idea of not existing scares me far more than the idea of existing in an unpleasant place.

[–]GentlemanREX[S] 15 points16 points ago

you didn't exist for billions of years before, you'll be used to it.

[–]4r10r5 5 points6 points ago

I, the person that exists now, will never get used to it. that's kind of the thing... I rather enjoy existing.

[–]GentlemanREX[S] 9 points10 points ago

so enjoy it while you can.

[–]Swipecat 2 points3 points ago*

But "now" or even time itself doesn't exist as such -- it's a continuum. i.e. there's nothing special about "now", this moment in time, above any other moment in time. Even the direction of time is an illusion of sorts, because you only remember the past rather than the future due to a property of entropy (that bit's complicated).

Continuity of self is an illusion, caused by the storage of memory in your brain. If some super-advanced alien were to create an exact copy of you while you were asleep, then destroyed the original, the copy would wake up the next day and would truly be you as much as you ever were from one day to the next, anyway.

One way to look at it is to imagine your conciousness as existing only for each separate instant in time, but instantly creating its own past from stored memory, thus creating the illusion of progression through time. As far as the continuity of "self" is concerned, the laws of physics say that you might as well worry about where you were before you were born than after your death.

Why do you seem to be your current age rather than five years old, say? Because five-years-old-you is effectively a different person, as future-you is a different person, even as I, Swipecat, am a different person. As I've said, it's just storage of memory that gives your conciousness the illusion of connection to your past self.

There ya go. Study advanced science, and you'll know these truths for certain, because nothing else can possibly fit the observations. So you can either get existential angst about it, or just don't worry about it and enjoy life because continuity of self is a convincing illusion. Have fun.

Edit: typos.

[–]ScubaPlays 1 point2 points ago

But there is also an end of continuity. We like now and it is special to each person because now is where we exist rather than before or later. We like now so much we'd rather it last longer than shorter. That is where the worrying about continuing comes from and a fear from the ending.

Actually the point about storing your consciousness is an interesting one that scientists have thought of before. Some believe this actually may be possible by 2050 (although only for the wealthiest, before prices decrease). http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mind_uploading

The idea of existing for eternity, no matter how awesome (or bad) that existence is, is more horrifying than anything I can think of. I want to stop existing eventually.

[–]allie_sin 1 point2 points ago

Except Captain Jack does wind up in a sort of purgatory between films.

My personal tip is that if you live somewhere where this has happened to you as an adult, you should probably move.

My reaction: "Hahahahahahahaha. No, wait youre serious. Let me laugh harder!"

[–]Riskinperspective 1 point2 points ago

Questions about hell tend to be an interesting topic. For what it's worth, some philosophers of religion talk about the "problem of hell". Here are a few different ways of formulating the problem. Assume for sake of argument that God exists, then:

How is the infinite punishment and suffering of a sinner compatible with God's infinite love and mercy?

Is it ever fair or just for God to send someone to hell?

Of course, this is where the conversation begins. Just like most topics on this board, these questions have a long and deep intellectual history.

[–]marshallwithmesa 2 points3 points ago

If God was just he could send sinners to Hell, but only for a short perio d. No amount of sin you can commit in a finite life is deserving the level of punishment Hell would dish out for an infinite amount of time. However, this doesn't gel with him being all loving and mercyful

[–]indorri 1 point2 points ago*

The usual apologetic for this is that the severity of punishment should be proportional to the difference of status between the offender and offended, and with God being of infinite majesty, infinite severity is warranted.

This, of course, falls flat on its face when you point out there won't be animals in hell, and that the entire idea is a humanly arbitrary premise used by monarchs to justify things like drawing and quartering. It absolutely astounds me how deep apologists will fall into fascism and evil to preserve their doctrines.

So, two nights ago I was in downtown orlando and a street preacher with a megaphone proceeded to tell me I was a sinner and I was going to hell. This is the exact thing I did, along with the words "Ooooh, so scary."

[–]the_onanist 1 point2 points ago

"Cool story bro" works for me.

[–]automatedresponse 1 point2 points ago

My thing is.. if Satan and hell were real.. and by extension god himself.. people would be selling their souls for riches and power all the time. But random poor losers don't just become rich and powerful on a massive scale. Ever.

All the evidence I needed.

[–]MxM111 1 point2 points ago

Really? This is how you react? Lean back and asynchronously wave your digits ? This is strange reaction!

LOL - some people don't realize that Hell is a place on earth. It's a place of your own making and so is heaven. It's got fuck all to do with what happens when you die, it's about where you are when you are alive.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Metaphor http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Simile http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Analogy

If your life isn't hell then you must be doing something right, so just keep on doing it. If your life turns to shit then it's probably because you are doing something wrong. Judging other people is one of those wrong things, so next time someone tells you you are going to hell it usually means that's where they are, except they just don't know it. All you can do for them is pity them and perhaps pray for them if you are that way inclined.

Peace be with you.

[–]shankems2000 0 points1 point ago

When they tell me I'm going to hell if I don't believe I just tell em "cool, I'll bring a grill and some burgers and me and my buddy Lucifer can catch up!"

Me and Lucifer went to high school together.

[–]Reid_Spencer 0 points1 point ago

I've been to Hell, Norway and back!

[–]Thinktankjf 0 points1 point ago

My reaction when im about to leave a job and get scolded for doing something wrong.

[–]cassidymccormick 0 points1 point ago

I usually just say, "Cool, I'll go chill in hell with Einstien, and you have fun in heaven with the Jonas Brothers."

[–]sbowesuk 0 points1 point ago

It really is ironic when bible bashers threaten you with hell, when you clarify that you don't believe in religion, and thus don't believe in hell. Does not compute.

[–]AngelicDirt 0 points1 point ago

... Followed by the loudest burst of laughter I can manage.

[–]ObamaisYoGabbaGabba 0 points1 point ago

This is my reaction whenever someone ridicules my conservative beliefs and proceeds to tell me how wrong I am.

[–]kesint 0 points1 point ago

Hell is a cruel place.. The way of talking down there.. And how they drink.. The horrors!

Ohh wait, your talking about the christian hell and not Hell in Norway? Nvm.

[–]beermepodcast 0 points1 point ago

I used to think this way (and it sometimes still comes out), but when you think about it, these people should be told really how horrible their threat is. It doesn't have the weight of reality behind it, but they're saying they believe you deserve unimaginable torture for eternity. That's sick.

[–]DietH20plz 0 points1 point ago

God will make you go to a place where you will scream and cry and suffer and burn for ALL of eternity. He does this because he loves you....

[–]gregthewhat 0 points1 point ago

People actually threaten you with hell? Wow, I say bullshit.

[–]gizadog 0 points1 point ago

....or by the big three letter word.

[–]JestersXIII 0 points1 point ago

It's ironic cause Jack's afraid of dying and ending up back in Davey Jone's locker.

[–]Hoodooz39 0 points1 point ago

Here's my reaction...

Well, crap, it doesn't seem to want to load, but it's a gif of Elaine giving Puddy the devil face when they get in a fight about going to hell.

[–]Hokie200proof 0 points1 point ago

I just hope it won't be r/spacedicks come to life.

But if it does exist, it will be. Good News: Deathbed conversion will get you out of it.

[–]abrahamsandvich 0 points1 point ago

Hell and the whole devil concept is so useless. There's just no room for it to exist in this world or any world. Why? I like to break it down to the animal level. Do bad raccoon's go to raccoon hell?

[–]chozzo 0 points1 point ago

ROFL! LOVE IT! =P

[–]Ldershy 0 points1 point ago

this may be the best thing i've ever seen. LMFAO! <3

[–]spyderj86 0 points1 point ago

I'll bet 99% of the people who believe in hell would be joining me there if it actually existed.
