A picture of the aftermath does not tell a story. You just assume the cops used excessive force because you hate cops.
[–]db0255 4 points5 points6 points 5 months ago
"Cops make me antsy when I'm speeding on the road. And they're just rude sometimes!!!"
Seems like a good reason to hate them.
[–]Canadian_Infidel 16 points17 points18 points 5 months ago
Hate comes from fear and people are becoming more and more afraid of the police. This is one symptom which in this case is a direct result of a shift in policing to a culture where the police believe they do, and should, have total power in any situation and that a big part of their work is to make sure everybody knows "who is boss". That thought pattern is out there, for lack of a better word. Go look for yourself on police forums. That idea is very destructive. Nobody wins when that takes over.
[–]db0255 5 points6 points7 points 5 months ago
OK. I've never really had too many run-ins with the police. Perhaps there's a correlation to police attitude and the type of people who interact with them.
I'm not taking away from your point however.

The police are not here to protect us. They make arrests, solves some crimes, and will occasionally break some up in progress. They aren't going to be there to protect you until its too late.
[–]plindb1 358 points359 points360 points 5 months ago
I was really curious about this incident, so I tracked it down. The woman's name is Alex Svoboda, and this happened in Providence, RI, in 2007. Amazingly, it was not covered by mainstream media, other than the Providence local newspaper.

Way to not pander to the hivemind and ask a non-loaded question.... How about a "what happened?" instead of question #1? Reading about her makes it obvious the situation is quite complex. (example: http://www.snopes.com/photos/politics/svoboda.asp)

[–]Moderator-Admin 188 points189 points190 points 5 months ago
It's very hard to get any context from something like this without having some sort of video footage.
The police claim that she had a bucket on her head (as part of the protest I guess?) and that she fell and hurt her leg because of it when the protestors were complying with the police's request to move.
The protestors claim that a police officer grabbed her for no reason and kicked her legs out from under her, causing her to fall to the ground and break her leg.
Obviously both parties are going to stick to their stories, but OP's post and the title to go along with it makes it seem like the police are 100% at fault, which is not necessarily the case.
[–][deleted] 142 points143 points144 points 5 months ago
The cop with the spray looks like he might have the mind to arrest her, due to the way he holds her right hand behind her back.
That and the way he has pepper spray out, make me lean towards the protesters' story being correct (but I doubt there was 'no reason') and the cops took her down.
[–]Moderator-Admin 66 points67 points68 points 5 months ago
Absolutely, both stories might have some truth to them also. Perhaps she was asked to move, refused and became confrontational, and when the police tried to arrest her, she turned to leave and got her leg caught on something and fell.
Alternatively, maybe the cops did use excessive force and caused the injury, there's just no way to know for sure what happened with the level of detail provided to us.
[–]RandomMandarin 124 points125 points126 points 5 months ago
Perhaps she was asked to move, refused and became confrontational

[–]lawfairy 6 points7 points8 points 5 months ago
I don't see why the the fact that racism exists is supposed to make me as a white person feel guilty. Racism exists, it's bullshit, and it means that if I weren't white my life would probably be a lot harder in some stupid irrational ways. Why you think I should feel guilty for those facts is beyond me.
[–][deleted] 39 points40 points41 points 5 months ago*
I get what you mean, but his is one of those times that you should quote the whole thing.
Perhaps she was asked to move, refused and became confrontational, and when the police tried to arrest her, she turned to leave and got her leg caught on something and fell.
We can't assume from the picture that she said "I'm not moving" and police then immediately took her to the ground and started macing randomly. We don't know if EDIT-camera girl- tried to kick the cop in the face.
I agree with your sentiment about cops used to not get aggressive quickly (not cause of my own age, but stories from others), but then again it could have been happening all the time but the internet wasn't around to tell you.
Just like thinking that earthquakes are becoming more frequent. They're not happening more often, it's just 40 years ago you wouldn't hear about the one in Turkey or Ethiopia from earlier in the day. You wouldn't even hear about what happened in your own city.
[–]Cavemonster 39 points40 points41 points 5 months ago
I'm from Providence and knew some people at the protest, not very well, but enough to hear the stories first hand.
Whatever the circumstances of Alex falling, officers were kneeling on her back right away. There's no persuasive argument that she could possibly have been a threat lying on the ground with a broken leg.
[–][deleted] 9 points10 points11 points 5 months ago
The circumstances of her falling are very important. If they put her there themselves, that's because the cops felt she was a threat. Putting your knee on someone's back is probably protocol-ish when you take them down. You're also assuming the cop is fully aware of the broken leg, and not entertained with macing the girl with the camera.
[–]JimmyHavok 13 points14 points15 points 5 months ago
macing the girl with the camera.
More evidence that he's acting entirely in good faith to protect the public.
[–]Cavemonster 17 points18 points19 points 5 months ago
According to the cops official account, they did not put her on the ground. They hold that she tripped accidentally. There isn't a version where jumping on her back with force is a reasonable precaution.
[–]CYRlX 9 points10 points11 points 5 months ago
I see one photo, and I see no one on her back. They are next to her, but not on her.
[–][deleted] 6 points7 points8 points 5 months ago
Okay, awesome then (well not awesome). If she fell by means not attributed to the police, then there's no justification for the force.
[–]Enlightnd 4 points5 points6 points 5 months ago
History shows your construct has some provably wrong assumptions.
Cops taking someone down isn't exclusivly the result of them seeing the person as a threat. Over and over they have gone up and even over, the use of lethal force, for nothing more then the person being the closest to grab.
Excessive force, police brutality, unprovoked aggression etc, there are cops completely guilty of that. And when it comes to protestors, the worst of the worst often come out of the woodwork, often volunteering, itching for action, seeking conflict, willing to cause conflict, just to be able to beat the shit out of someone.
[–]rahtin 1 point2 points3 points 5 months ago
It didn't happen as much to white people. During the civil rights protest, a baton hit to the arm was considered a polite way of asking someone to move.
[–]CrabStance 7 points8 points9 points 5 months ago
Why are you doing back-flips to come up with an explanation for this? It looks obvious to any rational human that excessive force was used, there's some fat chick on her face with a broken leg, where's the gun, the knife or any other possible thing that could make this acceptable? Nowhere because when it comes down to it even if they were protesting there is a massive leap between tolerating a protester and causing them mortal wounds. It isn't acceptable, period. You're whole idea that "maybe she tried to kick the cop in the face" makes no sense, even if that were true he obviously has the tools and skills to subdue the average joe without almost killing them, if not, get off the force pussy.

[–]spikey666 4 points5 points6 points 5 months ago
That's not the only reason he might want to keep a crowd back. She could get trampled as well.
[–][deleted] 0 points1 point2 points 5 months ago
Eh, that's what it looks like from the pic. You could go into the cop's head though.
(I'll be assuming broken leg girl moved aggressively towards the police, for this next part)
Broken leg girl makes some aggressive gesture, police feel backed up to the wall (slightly outnumbered), they take her down. As she comes down, camera girl moves in to probably help broken leg girl, but cop is now on high alert cause he knows he just broke this girl's leg, and people are probably pissed. He's gonna try to fuck anyone up that gets close to him.
After speaking to a cop once, I learned that what's always in the back of their head is "get home." Even if they're doing something normal/fun (like these guys at a tuition hike protest), they're still thinking about getting home. So if you're in a stressful situation, I see it being very possible to overreact by mistake, because your goal is to get home to do the family thing. You're going to do close to anything to achieve your goal, and adrenaline might not let you judge what's an appropriate/according path to get home. For all you know the cop could be GGG, but survival instinct made him Scumbag Steve.
And you can't know some things about him, like is he kinda traumatized about his last rowdy crowd interaction, where someone sucker punched him for no reason. This would make him paranoid and on high alert, leading to unfortunate mistakes being made. Cops should be held to a higher standard, but they're still human beings that can feel pressure in stressful situations. It's difficult to train to be level headed when the shit hits the fan. That's why soldiers try to train as much as possible into reflex/muscle memory. You can't be thinking about where your magazine is when you're being shot at.
[–]tunapepper 17 points18 points19 points 5 months ago

This is a description of somebody who should absolutely not be a police officer.
[–]DoesNotReadReplies 10 points11 points12 points 5 months ago
Just the other day I overheard a cop say "I'm a single father and I have 0 tolerance for this" and then proceed to blow the situation way out of hand and arrest a guy for leaving his 9 year old unattended in a theater for 5 minutes while he went to the bathroom. I absolutely agree emotions need to be put aside as soon as you put on a uniform to represent the law, which is based on completely the opposite of what an opinion is. Cops and public servants in general disgust me when they let emotion get in the way of reality.
[–]angelofdeathofdoom 8 points9 points10 points 5 months ago
You pretty much just eliminated the entire population from being police officers.

[–]skaterjuice 1 point2 points3 points 5 months ago
Sounds to me these police need better field training.
[–]ninjafaces 1 point2 points3 points 5 months ago
I'd be very nice. It'd also be nice to have multiple officers in one patrol car, equipment that works, more time dedicated to training instead of on the beat. Problem is we can't afford that, budget's just to small in the majority of precincts to do that.
[–]slipperyfist 1 point2 points3 points 5 months ago
That and the way he has pepper spray out
I can't speak for whose story is true since I wasn't there, but I can say that if I had to deal with a large (unruly?) group of protesters, I would at least have my pepper spray ready. Especially since he needs to keep people from getting near her leg and making the situation worse.
[–]NatKeen 18 points19 points20 points 5 months ago
The issue here is that there are two cops forcibly subduing someone who is undoubtedly in a lot of pain.
[–]tunapepper 22 points23 points24 points 5 months ago*
The problem is that the witness' accounts have remained consistent while the cops' accounts have constantly changed. The cops' stories ranged from the simple accidental fall to a scenario in which she came after the officers, attacking them with drumsticks. Generally and especially with multiple witnesses (including) police, the accounts that are consistent are usually the true accounts.
Here's another angle.
[–]Dkstewart45 2 points3 points4 points 5 months ago
"Officer, this will look great on reddit."
[–]Kazang 28 points29 points30 points 5 months ago
So their response to a woman falling over and breaking her leg was to arrest her, spray a bunch of people with mace and charge her with 3 felonies?
Sounds legit.
[–]drunksaver 15 points16 points17 points 5 months ago
It's called mob mentality. I've had mobs scream at me when I showed up on scene, and try to come after me and harm me while trying to treat someone. And I'm a paramedic. Having worked in ems for a while, I see the police in the picture trying to handle a crowd and keep themselves safe at the same time, on top of having to deal with a now injured person who may or may not be combative/drunk/whatever.
The cops in my city are pretty good, but they have plenty of jerks anyways. This got a little longer than I intended, but the point I'm trying to make is this: Trade spots with the cops for a minute in your head and think how you would handle a crowd of potentially violent people. And your also outnumbered.
For reference: Herd Behavior
[–]NanoGeek 6 points7 points8 points 5 months ago

[–]TheDentite 1 point2 points3 points 5 months ago
The title doesn't imply the cops are at fault.
[–]Karrl1z4j2 1 point2 points3 points 5 months ago
Ever since OWS started I have seen far too many videos of clear police violence followed by bullshit stories from the cops that are flat-out lies.
The fact that the cops say they didn't do it makes me believe that they did more than what the protesters say.
[–]Unicorn_On_Steroids -1 points0 points1 point 5 months ago
OP's post and the title to go along with it makes it seem like the police are 100% at fault, which is not necessarily the case.
What? Of course it's the cops fault. Does it look like the guy with pepper spray, holding her hand behind her back is trying to help her? There comes a time when you have to admit that cops are just a bunch of wankers.
[–]goostik 1 point2 points3 points 5 months ago
You might be right, but knowing the modus-operandi of cops, I'll give the benefit of doubt to the lady's story.

[–]juicesnn4e2 30 points31 points32 points 5 months ago
I just want to chime in with my thoughts. I USE to be an Atlanta police officer. I'm not because, I really didn't agree with everything that I was doing everyday, but that's a different story for a different day.
Let me just tell you guys, we hate this Occupy stuff. We usually AGREE with half the shit you "say" but disagree and fucking HATE how you're doing it. We get stuck loosing off days and working extra hours because you wanna do your protests. However, you don't wanna protest, you wanna act like a bunch of fucking fools (well not all of you but atleast 40% do, and guess what, that makes the whole group look bad). And than you start throwing stuff, and than you start doing super illegal things, and you yell in our faces and we just stand there. It's pretty annoying. One time I had to go to Chase bank on Piedmont and North, and had to sit back and watch as Occupy Atlanta, baracaded the front door, and the back door. Now that would be considered false inprisonment any other day, but for some reason we coulnd't arrest you, we just had to "stand by". Than the group got in our faces yelling stupid shit like baby killers and fucking pigs. It's pretty fucking rude and what did the acomplish? Nothing.
[–]jamesneysmith 14 points15 points16 points 5 months ago
I feel like it is slightly different than that. Agreed there is always a small contingent of violent 'protesters' but I'd wager it is far less than 40% - Probably closer to 5%. But one thing that is interesting about the police/protester relationship, which is partially illustrated by your comment, is that both sides have a pretty negative opinion of each other. The protesters feel the cops are abusing their power and the cops feels the protesters are inciting violence. Often all it takes is just being in each other's presence for tensions to rise unnecessarily. I believe that if there was no police presence at all at most protests the 95% of peaceful protesters would absolutely remain peaceful. But thanks to that 5% who intend to cause violence I can understand why this wouldn't be a viable option. I feel it is in both the police and the protesters best interests to eliminate this 5%. Without them the protest could go on without incident and the cops could simply sip their coffee near-by and oversee the proceedings. Unfortunately I don't see how to keep these 5% away. They're fucking things up for everybody.
[–]retiredknight 1 point2 points3 points 5 months ago
I have seen protests where the the disruptive group did not show up go smoothly. Protestors did their chants and waived their signs and a few officers stood by and watched, then everyone packed up and left.
The problem comes in when the agitators show up. They are usually much less than 5% of the crowd to start with. Unfortunately, crowds are easier to influence than individuals. One person can start the ball rolling and quickly turn a group that had every intention of being peaceful and orderly into a violent, criminal mob because each person they influence influences others in turn.
[–]juicesnn4e2 4 points5 points6 points 5 months ago
Yes, we all would love that. Well from the groups I was dealing with, I'd feel that 5% is way to low, but hey whatever, we are still agreeing that some people are ruining it for everyone. I mean I was a cop for 5 years, and never got a raise. I was shot at, and had death threats put out on me for $40,000 a year. It gets old, and fast. I agree with most of the stuff they are protesting, however some idiots with white shirts that lost touch with reailty were ordering us around like puppets.
[–]Kazang 31 points32 points33 points 5 months ago*
Except that this is nothing to do with Occupy or Atlanta because it's a labour union protest in Rhode Island from 2007.
[–]Engineer3227 11 points12 points13 points 5 months ago
Since the OWS protests started most pictures and videos on reddit relate to them. So a lot of people subconsciously connect protest type pictures with OWS now.
Granted, he didn't necessarily say that this picture was related to OWS. He only said, "we hate this Occupy stuff". So the only thing which might mean he was relating this picture to OWS was his use of the word "this".
[–]Engineer3227 8 points9 points10 points 5 months ago*
The Occupy movement has lost a huge amount of their past support because of how they act during their "protests".
They do lots of things which interfere with the lives of other United States citizens and it just pisses people off (blocking roads, camping in public parks, etc).
I'm guessing that in some cities the OWS people know how to legally and properly run their protests but the protests which always make media coverage are the ones where they are being complete morons about it.
Also, your last sentence: it did accomplish something. It accomplished making them lose more of their support and accomplished making themselves look like complete ass holes.
Blocking a bank interferes with the lives of United States citizens. They have to be flipping retarded to think they are going to accomplish anything positive for their movement by doing crap like that.

Cleveland is a very recent example of Occupy without making a mess. They were asked to move across the street because their current protest area interfered with some construction work. They also have a permit and a good working relationship with the police. End result is they get to protest and have their say, people can work, police can do something better with their time.
[–]The_Real_Slack 2 points3 points4 points 5 months ago
......oh my god. You're saying it's really that easy?
Who would have guessed? Good on Occupy Cleveland.
[–][deleted] 1 point2 points3 points 5 months ago
Fucking Reddit. THE DOWNVOTE BUTTON IS NOT A DISAGREE BUTTON. Upvote this shit, it's an interesting take and adds so much more to the comment thread than most of the banal shit above it.
I just want to chime in with my thoughts. I USED to be an occupier. I'm not because, I really didn't agree with everything others were doing, but that's a different story for a different day.
Let me just tell you guys, we hate this police officer stuff. We usually AGREE with half the reasons you "say" you're protecting us but disagree and fucking HATE how you're doing it. We get stuck in jail and barricaded in for hours because you wanna use indiscriminate force against protestors. However, you don't wanna serve and protect, you wanna act like a bunch of fucking fools (well not all of you but atleast 40% do, and guess what, that makes the whole group look bad). And than you start throwing stuff, and than you start doing super illegal things, and you yell in our faces and we just stand there. It's pretty annoying. One time I was just holding up a sign, and had to take rubber bullets to the chest and face. Now that would be considered assault any other day, but for some reason we coulnd't get you arrested, we just had to "stand by". Than the group got in our faces yelling stupid shit like "stop resisting" and beating us to the ground. It's pretty fucking rude and what did the acomplish? Nothing.
[–]Batshit_McGee 9 points10 points11 points 5 months ago
And yet you wonder why people hate OWS.
[–]fermented-fetus 11 points12 points13 points 5 months ago
That was one of the most childish responses I've seen get upvoted.
[–]mayn 8 points9 points10 points 5 months ago
I really hope you ain't trying to defend the occupy movement, also this guy seems like he was one of the only good cops to have ever walked the earth and now he's not and I just hope it wasn't the bullshit from occupy that made him quit. Cause that would be a god damn shame if people now have to deal with one more power trip asshole and one less decent human beaing with a head on his shoulders when the cops come by.
[–]dianthe 1 point2 points3 points 5 months ago
Man that's brutal :( When I saw the initial picture I was kinda hoping that the woman just has a prosthetic leg from her knee which got displaced when she got tackled... but that's her actual leg, awful!
[–]DocHopper 1 point2 points3 points 5 months ago
Amazingly? ಠ_ಠ
[–]BGraceful 1 point2 points3 points 5 months ago
Amazingly?
[–]marshmallowhug 1 point2 points3 points 5 months ago
Is that actually her real name? "Svoboda" means "freedom". That sounds like something a protester would choose as a name.
[–]zjs731 1 point2 points3 points 5 months ago
I in live Rhode Island, didn't hear about this. You can cut through the state in 40 minutes.
[–]Iamthesmartest 1 point2 points3 points 5 months ago
Incidents like this make me want to invent a camera that's actually a shotgun.
[–]zeroesandones 1 point2 points3 points 5 months ago
Well, someone needs to start policing the police. They don't listen to our words. I'm not a violent man, but something's got to give and it sure as hell isn't going to be my rights.
[–][deleted] 13 points14 points15 points 5 months ago
FYI, this is not a new photo. This is a few years old now. Happened back in 2007. After reading some of the comments, it's apparent that people weren't aware of this.
[–]secretvictory 37 points38 points39 points 5 months ago

[–]samskeyti_ 5 points6 points7 points 5 months ago
I'd just like to really point out that everyone is mentioning OWS... this wasn't OWS, this was from several years ago, back before it was cool to be a protestor. Alex Svoboda had her knee wrecked, and here in Rhode Island, this was a pretty big deal.
OWS is OWS, and these protesters were on a whole different level. They weren't part of a fad.
[–]LoriStrode 4 points5 points6 points 5 months ago
is he macing her to get her to stop recording ? Wow so wrong!
[–]m4110m 47 points48 points49 points 5 months ago
Stop resisting!
[–]spiff24 6 points7 points8 points 5 months ago
"The court found her to be a credible witness," Rodgers said. She did not deny swearing at officers or deliberately trying to block traffic, he said.
So it appears she was disobeying police orders. When officers stepped in, she resisted arrest and according to police assaulted them with drum sticks.
Assault of an officer can be a broad charge, so it's up to us to guess how far she took it.
I'd buy that officers tried to take her down while she resisted arrest and this injury was possibly the result of that. But she was supposedly doing this with a bucket over her head and couldn't see?? And she just fell? And that's when police decided to step in? That's the part that doesn't add up here. Maybe I missed a step somewhere but I dunno man.. I dunno.
[–]positronus 2 points3 points4 points 5 months ago
"Svoboda" mean "Freedom" in Russian. Googling for her last name and having connection to Russian meaning didn't show anything. I think this not her real name - unless it's a known fact, sorry this is the first time I hear about this person.
[–]pics-or-didnt-happen 12 points13 points14 points 5 months ago
She ran and fell. The things that pissed me off was that the cops detained her for a long while before getting her medical assistance.
[–]MusicMagi 19 points20 points21 points 5 months ago
that's the thing, it's not so much how people get arrested, but how they get treated while in custody. You always hear about these occupy protesters getting arrested and zip-tied, while being left for hours without something like asthma medication
[–]AndyYankee17 2 points3 points4 points 5 months ago
I never hear about that.
[–]odd84 1 point2 points3 points 5 months ago
You don't listen.
[–]lolmeatshield 10 points11 points12 points 5 months ago
See, while everyone looks at the girls leg and debates if the cop is at fault, or if it was an accident, am I the only person that sees the cop pulling out pepper spray to mace a photographer? how is that the appropriate reaction to the situation?

They need to start a system similar to the one they use to track sex offenders, something that requires a cop who abuses their power to identify themselves as such.
If there was ever a type of person who deserves a scarlet letter, its a pig like these fucking donut eating bacon fat bastards.

People say they hate cops and they're the worst, but what about all the good they do? They prevent a lot of bad things. Of course you're going to have shitty ones and assholes, but i'd take them over a shitload of crime with no protection any day.
I have never seen a cop do anything good. They're scared, stupid, subhuman animals.
ninja edit: I should specify that this applies only to American cops. The cops in other countries I've been to have been decent people.
[–]lofi76 4 points5 points6 points 5 months ago
My folks are friends with her folks, so I followed the story. Police WERE 100% at fault. There is ample coverage if you google, you can find pics and the whole story.
[–]seafoamstratocaster 9 points10 points11 points 5 months ago
Yeah because I'm sure her family is going to be completely impartial about it.
[–]lofi76 1 point2 points3 points 5 months ago
I have never met her folks, and my folks only mentioned the situation; I got my info from Democracy Now's coverage. Good of you to question everything though.
[–]nateqb12 2 points3 points4 points 5 months ago
Dammit cops you make it so hard to like you.
[–]MusicMagi 2 points3 points4 points 5 months ago
When is police brutality going to come to a head and will it ever stop? It's getting to a point where I'm becoming afraid to live in this country. If the the police or god forbid, the government suspect me of something, I can't say there's anything I could do to keep myself safe. Even seemingly obvious cases of abuses of power such as murder by the police or unnecessary force and torture (water deprivation, etc) seem to go unpunished and we're all supposed to continue on with our lives. When is it gonna stop? Can we stop it?
[–]platypusmusic 4 points5 points6 points 5 months ago
when is class struggle going to stop?
[–]MusicMagi 1 point2 points3 points 5 months ago
that very well may be the more important question
[–]LurkingAround 2 points3 points4 points 5 months ago
See, you're expecting it to stop on its own. It won't.
There are two methodologies to which this can be forced to happen, take your pick.
The first one is a more peaceful method, requiring you people to band together and make your city and/or state legislators create a body of people outside of the police force with the power to investigate police officers and strip them of all power, possibly permanently. Findings should even be allowed into courts as evidence against wrongdoing.
The second method is to find out where every one of them lives and make them fear stepping out of their homes and facing you in public for any reason. Naturally this one utilizes violence on a level of brutality that most Americans are averse to employing.
Either case has very little likelyhood of ever happening because most people don't want to put any real effort into anything really important, so just bend over and take it like always. It's just easier.
[–]CaucInvasion -1 points0 points1 point 5 months ago
dude, really? youre afraid of american police officers? you must be two pees short of a pod because we have some of the most tame police officers on the planet. dont believe me? go walk around central mexico or maybe even northern dubai. grow up and think about what you said when youre over the age of 18 and have some life experience.
I have been in other countries, but I have kept my nose clean both here and abroad. I don't give the police any reason to pay me any attention. I know there are people in the world who have it way worse than we do here, but I'm asking these questions from the perspective of someone that has grown up in a developed country. I don't think it should be acceptable anywhere in the world, but I'm only talking about the USA. I think we can do better.
[–]MarineSTA 3 points4 points5 points 5 months ago
Arresting someone isn't always a smooth deal. And sometime's people get injured on the way down, especially when they didn't want to go down. Don't be so quick to jump to conclusions. Sometimes people at protests do something illegal, and they get arrested for it.
[–]bagobonez 3 points4 points5 points 5 months ago
No... police are evil and every arrest they make is just them being dicks and abusing their authority and the citizen is always right no matter what. Don't think outside the hive mind!
[–]1longtime 3 points4 points5 points 5 months ago
Of course. These gentlemen are simply performing a new massage technique that fixes fractured bones. It involves shoving one's knee into the patient's back until the bone magically heals.
The hivemind doth judge them unjustly.

Agent provocateur https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Agent_provocateur
French for "inciting agent(s)") is an agent employed by the police or other entity to act undercover to entice or provoke another person to commit an illegal act.
And I believe the word you were looking for was 'extracted' not arrested.
[–]sevenVIIghosts 3 points4 points5 points 5 months ago*
This is actually a story of police excessive force. I'm fairly certain it was caught on camera but never used as evidence due to the police chief and north providence mayor helping to cover up. Here's some more depth on the story. * http://supportalexsvoboda.blogspot.com/2007/08/what-happened-in-north-providence.html * http://www.iww.org/en/category/branches/all-branches/providence-iww * http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yWpiIr5iAjs

[–]kellyirishred -8 points-7 points-6 points 5 months ago
Yup, its always the cop's fault. Because you know they're all bad people. God, doesn't this total and complete lack of balance start to get old to you authorophobes too after a while? It sure would be nice to see someone post a picture of an officer doing good, which I saw pretty much every day of my four-year-long career as a 911 EMT in a certain blighted NJ city. Support law enforcement.
People doing their jobs isn't particularly newsworthy.

If there were really "good cops" as you say, they would uphold their oath to protect the public and out the bad cops in their ranks. Until they start doing that I will back the opinion that there are only varying shades of "bad" cop.

[–]Bloodfeastisleman 2 points3 points4 points 5 months ago

It's nice to see police doing their jobs and behaving responsibly, but that doesn't excuse the ones that don't, especially when such cases are not dealt with internally.
[–]mundt8111 1 point2 points3 points 5 months ago
I went to high school with the dude in the red shirt to the left of the picture.
[–]MarvinBushmiller 0 points1 point2 points 5 months ago
You did something wrong according to the law and its authorities. The cops chase you. Your leg is broken in the pursuit. Does that broken leg mean you got what you deserved and you should be denied medical attention or comfort? No. A cop isn't a judge. Why does everyone lose their humanity the second they don't want to face reality? These cops were in the heat of moment. A broken leg means they've subdued their prey. Fine. That moment is over now. That's a human being in pain now. Why perpetuate more distress?
