They need to add a setting to change the navigation controls. To move the camera right, you drag the screen to the right... that's really annoying since dragging to the right should move the camera to the left like in google maps or any touchscreen phone.

[–]genna_TALL_warts 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

There's no chance they forgot about it. If I had to assume, I'd say that because the way that we dispose of waste uses a large amount of water, and being that they are in the desert, there isn't much water. So they instead transport the waste to a location and probably just dump it.

It is a desert hell hole, they don't even have a sewer system. Dubai is beyond insane. Here is video of the poop trunks:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Drq-WhpmfkU

[–]yellekc 63 points64 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

How can you build the worlds tallest skyscrapers and not install a sewer system. The economics alone should justify it. Those trucks aren't cheap. Plus they need fuel and drivers.

[–]aphasic 25 points26 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Also, the economics were/are skewed by practically free subsidized gasoline.

[–]Hadlockk 8 points9 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Sure, but you have to build roads for the poop trucks to park on, and deal with the increased congestion. Even a poop-railway would make more sense, since it wouldn't eat up existing road infrastructure. I wonder if there's no sewer system because the water table is only about 2' below the ground? Then again that's the same case in houston, but they have a functional sewer system. Go figure.

[–]RDandersen 10 points11 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

There's actually a very simple explination for that. A sewage system does not look as good on pictures as another skyscraber does.

[–]zararock 6 points7 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

That's what I kept asking myself the 4 years I lived in Dubai!! I used to see the poop trucks lined from my hood... There would be Kms and Kms of lined trucks with their lights on as if it was Xmas. About the costs of fuel and drivers: fuel is cheaper than tap water in Dubai and drivers are ridiculously low-paid. There is tons of exploitation..

poncy

Wow you really put point on it with poncy. English is subtle language man.

Poncy: Someone, something or somewhere which is overpriced, over styled, over rated, or thinks more highly of itself than it deserves. 1. Darling, do you fancy going to that new little Italian place tonight? Nah, it's a bit too poncy for me. I prefer the chip shop.

  1. What about the lovely diamond ring there? What? You must be joking, that's far too poncy.

  2. Why don't you dress like Mike? Sorry, love, that's just too poncy for my liking.

pri·ap·ic [prahy-ap-ik] Show IPA adjective 1. ( sometimes initial capital letter ) of or pertaining to Priapus; phallic. 2. characterized by or emphasizing a phallus: priapic figurines. 3. (of an image) suggestive of or resembling a phallus by itsshape. 4. exaggeratedly concerned with masculinity and malesexuality.

phal·lic [fal-ik] Show IPA adjective 1. of, pertaining to, or resembling a phallus. 2. of or pertaining to phallicism. 3. genital ( def. 2b ) .

[–]armenta 42 points43 points ago

It's not a nice thing to say, I try to not be inflammatory on here and to be positive, however in the case of Dubai I cannot. I hope in my lifetime it becomes a ghost town. With our diminishing resources and feeble attempts at improving the health and rights of all people, this city fails on both counts. I would hope that the middle east would use its wealth gained by finite resource could find itself looking for renewables. Then again why would they, when every other international energy company could give a damn.

[–]iwishiwasrelevant 31 points32 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

The middle east is so hot and sunny they could easily get a much better return on solar energy than most places. But they'd rather build artificial islands in the shape of palm trees.

[–]Strategic_Management 10 points11 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Though Dubai is both hot and sunny, it is not a good candidate for solar energy production. Solar panels are actually less efficient at high temperatures. The "temperature coefficient" states that, "for each degree over 25˚C … the maximum power of the panel is reduced by 0.48%". So, though Dubai gets, on average, 11.5 sunlight hours per day in July, temps average about 38˚C, and that still isn't even the surface temp of the panels themselves, which are much higher.

[–]iwishiwasrelevant 3 points4 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I would have never guessed that. Do you know if we will have solar panels that could operate at higher temperatures anytime in the near future? Or is that just not possible?

Also, I always hear that the American SW would be an ideal location for mass production of solar energy. Why would that be so if extreme heat is not good for solar energy production?

[–]Strategic_Management 4 points5 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Monocrystalline and polycrystalline solar cells will have a temperature coefficient in the –0.44% to -.50% range.

Amporphous Silicon, which consist of a layer of monocrystalline silicon covered with a thin coating of amorphouse silicon have a lower temperature coefficient of –0.34% - making them a good choice for solar panels in areas closer to the equator.

The best in terms of dealing with high temperatures are the Cadmium Telluride solar panels – with a temperature coefficient of –0.25%. However, while they are good with dealing with temperature changes, they are not as efficient at converting sunlight into electricity.

Newer technologies such as CIGS and some of the 4th generation solar cell technologies being developed show show promise of also being less affected by the temperature.

Also, "they" say the SW US is ideal because of its high number of sunlight hours per day - which is the most important variable in figuring out the systems output. But still, the average solar system loses about a third of its max output due to the heat and other inefficiencies.

The entirety of Dubai's development is based on real estate, very little if any comes from oil - less that 6%. More likely sources are foreign investment and tourism. It's suppose to be an international hub for multi-national corporations and tourism.

edit - did some googling:

Although Dubai's economy was built on the back of the oil industry,[74] revenues from oil and natural gas currently account for less than 6% of the emirate's revenues.[8] It is estimated that Dubai produces 50,000 to 70,000 barrels (11,000 m3) of oil a day[75] and substantial quantities of gas from offshore fields. The emirate's share in UAE's gas revenues is about 2%. Dubai's oil reserves have diminished significantly and are expected to be exhausted in 20 years.[76] Real estate and construction (22.6%),[10] trade (16%), entrepôt (15%) and financial services (11%) are the largest contributors to Dubai's economy.[77]

Google "Vernacular Architecture" and you will now have another objective reason to hate Dubai. when I was learning about it we spent some time hating on Dubai.

building that city makes absolutely no sense from any point of view. It is also very ugly compared to the original renderings.

[–]AmazingThew 9 points10 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Okay, I looked it up, but I must confess I don't follow. Are you saying Dubai was built by amateurs trying to emulate Western architecture, or something else?

[–]dracy69 3 points4 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Vernacular architecture is a category ofarchitecture based on localized needs andconstruction materials, and reflecting local traditions.

It's generally accepted that you apply this concept when designing buildings or cities. The skyscraper was conceived in places of highly dense populations and restricted real estate like Manhattan. Dubai has no use for them, they are unintuitive and actually inefficient use of space.

[–]OrangeBubble 2 points3 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Lived in Dubai for 25 years. Its not really the gay Mecca of the Middle East, its just that most of the other countries in the Middle East come down much harder on homosexuality.

There arent that many secret gay bar, unless you count the number of Filipino karaoke bars.

Ive seen gay dude holding hands here, but you can hold hands in a casual, friendly way here, so while its blandly obvious that two gay dudes are holding hands for other reasons, they just end up being looked down on.

[–]WhiskyBear54 29 points30 points ago*

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

It's not as bad as everyone thinks it is. It's not a tourist trap and they really aren't "out" to get you. I was just there for a 10 day vacation last month and I had an amazing time. It's very clean and very safe. Yes, there are a ton of laws to abide by but there are plenty of places to let loose and have a great drunk fun time. Because there are so many rules, you will rarely, if ever, see someone act like an asshole. People know the rules/laws and they don't break them. You'll never see a fight at a bar/club. You'll never see people being assholes to each other and all you have to do is respect the people that live there. Believe it or not, you are allowed to hold hands in public, and girls are allowed to show their knees/shoulders. But if an authority figure asks you to respect their beliefs while in a public place (mall, supermarket, etc.) you kindly cover up or stop holding hands and go on your way. It's the people who are whoringly making out in public or continually disobeying the authority figures that start all those bad stories. So, basically, if you are a decent human who respects other cultures and loves to have a good time, Dubai is a wonderful place to visit. Just don't go in the summer. It's a ghost town with temps approaching 130F.

TL:DR don't be a dickhead in a foreign country and you'll have fun.

[–]ShitsHappen 33 points34 points ago

I lived in Dubai for 15 years. It might not be a horrible place but the xenophobia is to another extreme. I have seen people getting beat up for the color of their skin.

Sorry but the rules and laws apply to some and not to others. I have seen people crash cars and walk away. Along with that I have known of inside connections and backdoor dealings so immigrants can get or maintain their visas. This mainly affects individuals from third world countries.

TL:DR Dubai's laws are selective depending on the ethnicity.

I lived in Dubai for 15 years. It might not be a horrible place but the xenophobia is to another extreme. I have seen people getting beat up for the color of their skin.

I've lived in nearby Doha for 17 years and I visit Dubai at least once or twice a year. I've never heard of anything like this.

This I agree with, with one slight correction: they are selectively applied based on class, not ethnicity. Some of the richest and most successful people in Dubai are South Asians, and they take advantage of the system all the same.

Thanks for the proper insight. Obviously, only being there 10 days, I didn't grasp as much as you. I'm not saying it is a perfect place or without huge glaring but hidden faults, but I honestly had an amazing time visiting various malls, skiing indoors, going to brunch, going to the World Cup, and tasting various foods. I would never live there, but I'm happy I went as a tourist from the USA. I'd encourage any of my friends to go at some point, as long as it's still prosperous and friendly to those who respect the culture.

Well for starters, there have been cases where women who reported being raped were arrested for adultery. That alone makes me lose enough faith in their justice system to never go.

I'll be honest, when I went to Dubai this past February I felt quite safe. I mean it was somewhat intimidating at first, but I basically did whatever I would normally do and I didn't get in trouble. The only things I did otherwise were to respect their culture (ex. rarely wearing shorts and not staring at the veiled women). It really is a fairly nice and friendly area for the most part. Of course, I suspect that's also because they're only too happy to continue raking in the money from all of the tourists that visit.

Nearly everyone in those buildings is wearing sweatshop clothing, and they're all living a life style that is indirectly subsidized by foreign slave labour though. You might to want to reconsider standing on that soapbox.

No? I mean, yes there were slaves, and they did contribute to a certain period of development, but how many buildings where you live are actually built by slaves in the past 30 years?

*America had slaves before human rights and when there was no rapid industrialization. Dubai has slaves because it's cheaper. The context is what makes it inexcusable.

I don't understand the complaints about the "hideous" desert. I'm from Bahrain, a pretty arid Arabic desert island (about 20 minutes from Dubai by plane, actually) and the desert has always been beautiful to me. I love greenery and trees and such, but the desert itself is also really pretty.

yes but as city planning it sucks. I don't see any sign of public street life, just tall buildings and transport to get to them. I get that it's the desert and hot and that the good stuff needs to be indoors but still. It looks like such a dreary place to live.

The part that's 'just tall buildings and transport to get to them' is only one very small part of the city, but unfortunately, it's the only part that most people who don't live in the UAE actually see. If you go to the residential neighbourhoods, Bur Dubai, Deira, etc., the city life is very busy. Driving through Bur Dubai is very slow and tedious because there are SO many people walking around.

The same thing is happening in China.

[–]iwishiwasrelevant 13 points14 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I like how you just assume that. Cause no one could possibly be wearing clothes not made by slave labor. Most of my clothes are via thrift stores or made in the US. Not all, but most. Nobody is perfect.

And as FuckingDIY points out, there's a huge difference between the kind of 'slave' labour you're talking about (being a sweatshop worker is miserable but not the same as slavery) and what Dubai does: which is lie to people and entrap them. They lure people in under false pretenses and don't allow them to leave, giving them just enough food and water to not die.

What's even worse, is that in the case of 'my clothes', I never see the sweatshop worker. Indeed, I'd be hard pressed to remember a single instance in my life in which I've witnessed oppression on that level in my daily life; I imagine it would change my perspective quite a bit. Meanwhile in Dubai, the slave population is so large it's rumoured to outnumber the locals. These people see slaves day in, day out, and they don't care. It's despicable.

[–]smpx 19 points20 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

What kind of clothing are you wearing? Mine was made by a factory where workers can quit their jobs and leave to find other jobs.

There is a difference between "underpaid" and "slavery".

[–]kevinchewy 4 points5 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

The workers in Dubai are paid, just not very well. However, many people here are making much more money than they would if they were living in the Philippines or India or wherever they're from. Our live in maid, for example, works 12 hours a day 6 days a week and makes 2000 dirhams ($234 US) a month. Back in the Philippines, she would have made less than half that, and she was a nurse.

[–]StephanBotha 8 points9 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I want to add to this.

This is the case. People jump on the "slave-labour" bandwagon because of a few cases they read in the news.

My mother's live-in maid didn't want to go back home for her annual vacation, because at home she lives in a shack with no water and electricity.

People on Reddit can be such total idiots. They only see one side of the coin and jump the wagon.

Just like with the latest unpacking of the Samsung GS3. Then XDA did a benchmark comparison and now everyone loves the GS3.

Fucking hypocritical idiots.

[–]WaTar42 9 points10 points ago*

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

You have such a terrible understanding of how the world and economics works that I don't even know where to begin.

You can not compare giving factory jobs to impoverished farmers that pay on average 2x the average local wage to abducting workers from India, and then stealing their passports so they can never leave. In addition, the UN has done studies and has found that if you do not give these textile factory jobs to poor people in developing countries, or if you take them away (or what do you call it, "slave labor?") then they end up starving to death, joining criminal gangs, resort to far more dangerous work like stone crushing, or are forced to sell their children into prostitution. So a textile company hiring impoverished desperate people in poor countries is a far cry from what goes on in Dubai.

Furthermore, these textile factory jobs that you call "slave labor" (which I've already established how they are anything but) are essentially a stage in a country's development. Remember, everything wasn't always made in China, originally during the 70's and 80's the countries which provided cheap ["slave?"] labor to the western world were Japan and South Korea, particularly in textiles(clothes). This provided massive investment and increase in wages, which led their economies to grow at impressive rates, and with (relatively) stable governments which were able to implement the correct social policies, they became economic powerhouses with very high standards of living, and in some cases both countries have higher standards of living than some of the western countries they once provided cheap labor for.

In short, these clothing manufacturing jobs that you call "slave labor" are quite frankly by far the best opportunity for people in these developing countries and are a stepping stone to greater prosperity. We have seen this process in Japan, South Korea, Singapore, Malaysia, and it's beginnings in Indonesia, Vietnam, and China.

Heck, you can see this happening right before your very eyes, in China thanks to it's massive growth in export industries, over 300 million people have risen out of poverty that's hardly the same as "slave labor"

[–]FuckingDIY 12 points13 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

One difference is that the workers in Dubai are imported from abroad under false pretenses and not allowed to leave...despite lower then promised pay and harsh work/life conditions. Pointing something like that out isn't hypocritical.

There are harsh working conditions all over the world, but shit like this is especially despicable.

You move to an area, and you multiply, and multiply, until every natural resource is consumed. The only way you can survive is to spread to another area. There is another organism on this planet that follows the same pattern. A virus. Human beings are a disease, a cancer of this planet, you are a plague, and we are the cure."

It's like the type of thing a kid would draw for a city's 'cool skyline;' a dozen or so of really tall buildings that stand out, and are differentiated between them only by their top ending in a impractical feature often made of triangular protruding things. Every other building in between them is just your typical generic tall building of square windows. They all, of course, lack any detail when inspected closely. Oh, can't forget the wide building, usually round shaped, somewhere in the middle, and often at the front.
