Or, you could follow the guidelines of basic phonics and realize that it's pronounced "Go-tee".

[–]ElGusteau 7 points8 points ago

Agreed. In English, pronunciation is determined largely by the context. For example, 'gh' can only be an 'f' sound at the end of the word, and then (usually) only when it's proceeded by 'ou', 'au' ... Etc. The word is definitely pronounced 'got-ee'

[–]capfal 4 points5 points ago

Goatee?

[–]Lonestarr1337 2 points3 points ago

Goatse?

[–]capfal 1 point2 points ago*

The 'gh' pronounced as 'f' comes from the Nordic/Germanic languages through old English, and in most cases was originally written 'h' or 'g'. This is similar to 'sh' making a sound different to 's' and 'h'. The 'ti'/'si'/'ci' sounds come from French or Latin. They're pronounced as they are in French, so that has nothing to do with English. Checkmate, ghoti.

[–]heroinsteve 50 points51 points ago

I'm assuming this was made by someone whose primary language wasn't English.

[–]YourInnerVoice 11 points12 points ago*

I think you're right. As a speaker of a foreign language whose words are pronounced almost exactly how they're written (except some rare cases) I've always found a little hard to learn the correct pronunciation of a lot of English words, and almost hated it for that (it sounds cool though...)

Also, I didn't understand why spelling contests existed until I began studying english...

Edit: as kookoouchu said

[–]Kookoouchu 5 points6 points ago

Also, I didn't understood why spelling contests existed until I began studying english...

I don't want to be that guy, but when using "did not" you don't need to use the past present from understand. Just trying to help someone with their English grammar.

[–]Doxep 1 point2 points ago

Let me guess... Italian?

[–]Axemantitan 0 points1 point ago

Are you Finnish?

[–]Armandeus 0 points1 point ago

George Bernard Shaw.

[–]SadGirl_1993 31 points32 points ago

The fact that he misspelled once, then spelled it corrected and then misspelled it again ruined it for me.

[–]samathor 5 points6 points ago

[–]Fenrir_Rendar 5 points6 points ago

Oh man, My grandfather was filled with shit like this.

Phydeux. He named his dog that.

[–]filterspam 0 points1 point ago

Fidough is the correct spelling of course.

[–]Fenrir_Rendar 0 points1 point ago

I suddenly want to name a Marine dog 'Sempir Phydeux.'

( Fuck if i can remember spelling.)

[–]filterspam 0 points1 point ago

That phine you should deux that.

[–]postsboobsinreposts 19 points20 points ago*

If the RE in repost were pronounced B and the PO in repost were OO and the ST in repost were BS you'd get Boobs

edit: NSFW. I can't believe how many people click links that say "boobs" and expect it to be anything else.

[–][deleted] ago

[–]kielbasaj 1 point2 points ago

Only in America. In England it's pronounced 'Clear'

[–]filterspam 0 points1 point ago

New clear.

[–]questionablemoose 0 points1 point ago

The only people who pronounce "Nuclear" as "Nucular" are uneducated, or simply don't care.

[–]nxuul 0 points1 point ago

Or Kentucky. It doesn't make sense, but everyone says it because everyone else says it.

[–]cuzseven89 6 points7 points ago

am i an idiot or does the o in women sound like an o when i pronounce it?

[–]elint 1 point2 points ago

"women" is the plural of "woman". Most english speakers pronounce "woman" as "wuh-man" and "women" as "wih-men". The singular may sound more like an o sound, but the plural sounds more like an i sound. Do you pronounce both woman and women with the same sounds?

[–]cuzseven89 6 points7 points ago

I DON'T KNOW ANYMORE. I JUST KEEP SAYING BOTH OVER AND OVER AND NOT GETTING ANYWHERE.

[–]elint 1 point2 points ago

Hah, I've been doing the same "woman women woman women ..." They've now lost meaning and both of them sound weird :)

[–]FunnyMan3595 1 point2 points ago

Gotta love semantic satiation.

[–]MEaster 1 point2 points ago

The reason for the odd pronunciation of the plural is probably because it's a remnant from Old English, when the plural was spelled "wimmen".

[–]beatyour1337 9 points10 points ago

This has been on reddit before

[–]darkly39r 28 points29 points ago

So has everything.

[–]lKnown2Bl -3 points-2 points ago

Except for good original content...

[–]wellthatsjustfine 2 points3 points ago

[–]fridgeridoo 1 point2 points ago

As someone who had no problems learning English, I approve of this

[–]gblakes 1 point2 points ago

Don't you mean the Engloti language?

[–]hitlerwasright 1 point2 points ago

A white pigeon is called "Dove"

The past tense of diving is "Dove"

[–]deadwait22 1 point2 points ago

I've been listening to this band since the 90's, and only now do I finally get what the name means...thanks!

[–]welchy001 2 points3 points ago

The 'ti' only sounds like 'sh' if it is before 'on' and the 'gh' sounds like 'f' at the end of a word, so basically this is bullshit

[–]bmdizzle 2 points3 points ago

spatial and laughter

[–]SamIAre 2 points3 points ago

He should should have said 'ti' only works before another vowel. And Laughter still gets the 'f' sound because the base is 'laugh' which does end in 'gh'.

[–]elint 1 point2 points ago

Cockatiel. The problem with english is that it borrows words from languages all around the world, so most "general rules" have exceptions.

[–]welchy001 0 points1 point ago

Cheers, was just about to say that.

[–][deleted] 2 points3 points ago

I bet English is the only language where context can affect the pronunciation of a letter or series of letters.

[–]dyjoots 2 points3 points ago

You lose that bet.

[–][deleted] 2 points3 points ago

I bet sarcasm only exists in the English language, too.

[–]dyjoots 0 points1 point ago

You lose that bet.

[–]fluxaxion 1 point2 points ago

Repost bot, where are you?

[–]CatLover99 0 points1 point ago

Or... you know... it's the "tion" not the "ti" that sounds like "sh"

[–]Squidmonkej 0 points1 point ago

If the "re"-sound in "reverse" is pronounced "re", the "po" in pole is "po", and "st" in "sting" is "st", the word "repost" is pronounced just like what this is.

Edit: oops, didn't check the rest of the comments. Whatever, still a repost.

[–]BananApocalypse 0 points1 point ago

By this logic, "Phtholognyrrh" is pronounced "Turner".

  • "phth" from phthisic makes a "T" sound
  • "olo" from colonel makes "ur"
  • "gn" from gnat makes "n"
  • "yrrh" from myrrh makes "er".

[–]thegiftedape 0 points1 point ago

not understanding that trailing or leading characters can effect the pronunciation of the other characters in the word.

[–]Newher 0 points1 point ago

My history teacher always used this, and it always upset me. She said that circus should be pronounced "sirsuss" or "kirkuss". She had been teaching for over 30 years so apparently she knew what she was talking about, so the class got mad at me when I challenged her about it.

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point ago

This why the IPA exists.

[–]yea_but_also 0 points1 point ago

all the words used as the example aren't routed in one stem of the english language. all those weird pronunciations come from various cultures. some are Greek, some are Latin some are Germanic. we borrow pretty much all of our language from other previous languages. so... putting all the spelling anomalies into one word is just irritating because a.) it's not an actual word so pronunciation would be impossible to figure out. and b.) solar wind.

[–]ara_p 0 points1 point ago

Idiot, everyone knows "GHOTI" is only pronounced "FISH" on the second wednesday of February during a leap year. eyeroll

[–]fotoman 0 points1 point ago

TIL people pronounce 'women' like whi-men as opposed to wheh-men

[–]UberHard 0 points1 point ago

Prounced? That's you, not us.

[–]Sprigglett 0 points1 point ago

Its seems to me like it's proneced gh-uh-tee

[–]loriden 0 points1 point ago

What species of fish is on that picture?

[–]Anonymousdave69 -1 points0 points ago

As someone who spends way too much time on Reddit, please for the love of all the things, find something original to post.

[–]Redsss429 0 points1 point ago

This is a repost, I still have a print screen from a few months ago

[–]egyptsFINEST8 0 points1 point ago

This is possibly the most reposted picture on reddit.

[–]CitizenPremier 0 points1 point ago

English started out phonetic but slowly changed to something better. Spelling helps us know the meaning of words. It also helps us to distinguish between homophones. What if we wrote a sentence as "Ai reizt thuh bIldng"--we wouldn't know if you built it or destroyed it!

[–]ArbitraryIndigo 0 points1 point ago

"Raise" and "raze" aren't quite homophones.

[–]CitizenPremier 0 points1 point ago

Well, they are in my idiolect. And here.

[–]ArbitraryIndigo 0 points1 point ago

Do you pronounce "caught" and "cot" the same way, too?

[–]CitizenPremier 0 points1 point ago

Yep. I have no open o.

[–]Lolmomos -1 points0 points ago

My teacher said this in class a few weeks ago....

Not sure if redditor... or from the future..

[–]ndchristie[!] 0 points1 point ago

my teacher said this in class about 10 years ago. it was't a new joke back then either.

[–]Volsunga -3 points-2 points ago

The "gh" in "enough" is not pronounced as "f", it's a much softer consonant that requires the teeth barely touching the lower lip rather than being pressed against it like "f". The "o" in "women" is not pronounced as a short "i", it's pronounced as an "ö". The last one makes no sense at all because it's only the "t" that transforms, the "i" is part of the vowel sound. Even then, the sound isn't "sh", it's "tsch". Even assuming any of the first part was not blatantly wrong, it's still trying to use linguistic accommodations for Germanic sounds in the Latin alphabet and trying to apply it to a Greek root word that doesn't need accommodations to fit the sounds into the standard alphabet.

There's a reason phonetic rules exist. If you think English is bad, try French, Spanish, or any Slavic language. East Asian languages like Japanese and Korean are the only languages that lack contextual phonetics. This was probably made by someone who has never tried to learn another language besides English, but still thinks the "English is the hardest language to learn" myth is true.

[–]feor1300 -1 points0 points ago

The thing to remember with English is that most of English isn't English. English is, as one guy I knew in College put, "A language which beats up other languages and takes their syntax."

[–]TheMagicPin 0 points1 point ago

Takes their syntax? How's that?

[–][deleted] ago

I know I do, but I am curious as to how you pronounce women. For the life of me I can't force woh-men so come out of me correctly, it is always weh-men or wimen. Similarly "Marry, Merry and Mary" all sound the same when I say them.

[–]UltaMayhem 1 point2 points ago

American?

[–]Davetherescueranger 0 points1 point ago

Yep

[–]UltaMayhem 0 points1 point ago

Figured

[–][deleted] ago

[–]preske -2 points-1 points ago

In America, there are different accents

You don't say?

[–]moyvy -4 points-3 points ago

its not said 'WIMMEN'

[–]preske -4 points-3 points ago

Wimen? Most people I heard never pronounced it that way, save for the occasional accent.

[–]danhole -3 points-2 points ago

Who on earth says Women like Wimen?

[–]anapolis43 0 points1 point ago

Everyone? That's the plural for woman.

[–]danhole 0 points1 point ago

I say Woo-man.

[–]ylledylle -2 points-1 points ago

I always learned that it was George Bernard Shaw who said this, but it seems Wikipedia begs to differ. Anyway, it's a very old little nugget of information, but I still think it is quite interesting. Certainly demonstrates the arbitrariness of letters and pronunciation.
