I would say this fits the definition if 'trolled' pretty well. Mainly from where the term comes from, being about having a baited fishing line in the water and dragging it behind a boat. The dog is basicly pulling a baited line behind him and is chasing the bait.

The term 'trolled' is used to describe a very specific kind of internet-related act: the idea of winding someone up by tricking them into getting angry about opinions you write, but don't actually believe to be true. Trolling is not the same as tricking or pranking- all have different connotations depending on the specific situation they are used for.

Dude, don't be a weakasaurus. Words change with time, and are constantly getting updated and refined with nuance and meaning.

The above pair of sentences was an example of a proper troll, as I fully agree with FaerieStories' eloquent description of trolling, yet I wrote a counter-opinion that I actually oppose, simply with the intent to rustle his jimmies. Obviously if my comment were a true troll, I wouldn't include this second paragraph revealing my deception; I would simply submit my comment after the first paragraph and cackle from under my bridge. You know that's how we do.

While I like the idea and appreciate the verbal congruity between them, trawling and trolling do not come from the same place.

Its the verb form of 'troll', ie, someone who goes on the internet to fuck with people.

Trawling is dragging a net behind a boat to catch fish, while trolling is dragging a baited line behind a boat to catch fish. The internet word got it's name based of the term used for fishing.
