Absolutely astonishing. I always find things that place Earth to scale with anything larger absolutely terrifying. Knowing that there's so much out there when we haven't even explored all of earth yet. Mind blowing.

[–]Randomlk 19 points20 points ago

It is rather amazing, yet scary at the same time, we think ants are small, but we are basically bacteria compared to what is out there.

[–]gulljack 11 points12 points ago

We are atoms really

[–]CitizenPremier 11 points12 points ago*

No. We are far, far smaller than that. The ratio of the size of a hydrogen atom to the size of the earth is 3.9 x 10-18.The ratio of the size of the Earth to the size of the universe is 1.4 x 10-20.

Would anyone on Earth notice if a single atom disappeared? Absolutely not. And yet this change would be 100 times more significant to Earth than the disappearance of the Earth would be to the universe.

Let's do the human body too, for fun (rounding out a human body to a 4 foot wide sphere). The ratio of a hydrogen atom to the a human body is 4.1 X 10-11. The ratio of the size of a human body to the universe is 1.4 X 10-27.

(edited to fix some math errors)

[–]IConrad 2 points3 points ago

200x more significant.

[–]fa4prez 1 point2 points ago*

Nothing but atoms in the grand scheme of things. Can you guys imagine being able to orbit one of those colossal stars and gaze at it for hours and hours? I do the same with the moon and just about all the things that just the Earth and Moon have experienced.

[–]colinsteadman 0 points1 point ago

Would it look about the same? What I mean by that is you'd have to be that much further away to avoid being fried, so the scales would balance and it'd appear the same size as the sun... More or less.

[–]fa4prez 0 points1 point ago

Not necessarily. It depends on the intensity of the sun. A lot of stars are a lot less intense than the sun and therefore you could be closer in distance to it than the distance to the sun.

[–]colinsteadman 0 points1 point ago

OK, I think I'm well out of my depth on this one - but the intensity of a red giant should be greater than that of a star like our sun.

If I remember correctly a red giant is a star nearing the end of its life. It will be fusing elements higher than hydrogen in its core, and subsequently releasing more energy (thus making it brighter).

However the extra energy also has the effect of pushing the outer layers of the star outwards, causing the massive bloat in size. The extra surface area caused by this bloat has the effect of dimming any give area of surface. Its a bit paradoxical really, any give section of surface that you care to measure will get dimmer, but because there is massively more surface area, the star as a whole gets brighter.

So yeah, where does that leave us? I assume we'd have to be further away, to avoid the extra energy... But I may well be wrong.

[–]shitterplug 0 points1 point ago

We are very very very small relative to the universe. Far smaller than bacteria are to us.

[–]GSnow 9 points10 points ago

It's really hard not to just spend a half-hour wandering back and forth on that scale-line (and looking up all the things I have no clue about) and marveling at the scale and complexity of the universe.

I don't think I'm capable of truly understanding how large those celestial bodies are.

I suck.

[–]IConrad 0 points1 point ago

  • Thermal energy is mostly kinetic energy -- motion.

  • relativistic mass is real for purposes of gravitation. The faster something goes, the more it weighs.

Therefore, the hotter something is, the more massive it is. Unfortunately, we know the opposite to not be true. How do we know this?

Your mom.

[–]Estrisk 0 points1 point ago

Your mom is so fat that her weight can only be expressed in scientific notation.

[–]scsnse 7 points8 points ago

Good, because she only weighs 1.1x102 lbs.

[–]Estrisk 4 points5 points ago

Looks like someone hasn't finished re-calibrating your mom's scale yet.

I love Jupiter. I know most people go crazy over Saturn because of the ring system, but Jupiter is majestic and totally blows me away when i catch it in the eyepiece of my telescope.

[–]tenhou 8 points9 points ago

Did you know big brother Jupiter protects us from the bullies that try to fly into our solar system and hurt us?

[–]colinsteadman 0 points1 point ago

Yes, but doesn't it also disturb the Oort cloud and shake loose death from the skies?

[–]tenhou 0 points1 point ago

Yea but that's just good ol' fashioned ribbin'

[–]IRAPEYOURDEADGRANDMA 2 points3 points ago

Jupiter has rings too!

[–]kbrewsky 0 points1 point ago

Seriously! You can see storms washing across the surface and moons revolving around it. It's always the first thing I show people when I bring out the 'scope.

Saturn is beautiful, but it pales in comparison to what you can see on Jupiter with a small telescope.

if there were ever an earth the size of canis majoris, i wonder how long it would take to explore the whole surface, not knowing whats on the other side

[–]adamwhoopass 3 points4 points ago

Fuuuuuuuuuck man.

[–]Xiaz89 1 point2 points ago

Only part of that world could possibly be habitable... The distance from the equator to the north and south pole would be so great, that either equator would be way too hot, or the other 99% of the planet would be too cold.

(I am no scientist)

[–]ryrybang 1 point2 points ago

If there was an earth the size of canis majoris it would actually be a star. That's too much mass together to expect things like rocks, magma, and an iron core to exist like they do on earth. It would collapse, get hotter, and go nuclear. Depending on the composition (lots of iron) it would go supernova almost immediately. You wouldn't have very long to go exploring before you got ignited and became more fuel for the star's furnace or supernova.

[–][deleted] ago

[deleted]

[–]colinsteadman 0 points1 point ago

Yes, but I think it's a hypothetical thought experiment, and he's right, we'd end up with a star or nova.

[–]samtart 0 points1 point ago

thats a great way to visualize it.

I wish someone would do this cause just looking at it is hard to comprehend its size.

[–]TheWingedPig 4 points5 points ago*

According to Wikipedia, the conservative estimate for VY Canis Majoris' radius is, "merely 600 times the radius of the Sun". The sun's radius is roughly 110 times Earth's radius. Therefore, VY Canis Majoris' radius is 66,000 times that of Earth. Assuming I'm not making some huge mistake with math, that means our planet is 1/66,000 the size of VY Canis Majoris.

So, let's see how big the Earth is when put right up next to VY Canis Majoris?

  • The Earth's average radius is 6,371 km
  • 6,371 km / 66,000 = .09653 km
  • .09653 km = 105.5665 yd

So if we made a scale model comparing the Earth to VY Canis Majoris, and used the Earth to represent VY Canis Majoris, then the model of the Earth would need to be a sphere with a diameter of a little more than the length of two American football fields (excluding end-zones and stands of course). Go to Google Earth, or Google Maps and find a Football field. Duplicate that football field and make the two sit next to each other. That is how large our planet is...

EDIT And let me stress that that is the conservative estimate for VY Canis Majoris' size. Other estimates put it's radius as high as 2100 times the radius of the sun, so three times larger than what my math was based on.

[–]eramos 1 point2 points ago

Size should correspond to cubic area in this case, not just linearly with the radius. It's really 66,0003 larger in size (by volume).

[–]DJFracture 4 points5 points ago

"If the Earth were to be represented by a sphere one centimeter (0.39") in diameter, the Sun would be represented as a sphere with a diameter of 109 centimeters (3½ ft.), at a distance of 117 meters. At these scales, VY Canis Majoris would have a diameter of approximately 2.3 kilometers (1.43 mi.), assuming the upper limit estimate of its radius."

[–]threethirds 7 points8 points ago

it's sol. and our moon is luna

[–]UrsusArctos 4 points5 points ago

It is "Sol" but also "Sun" (they mean the same thing. this confuses people because the hear sun and assume sun=/= star. Fun fact, Earth is also called Terra.

[–]esoteric416 7 points8 points ago

I always liked the idea of being the Terrans, but I'm better at the Protoss.

[–]Attatt 4 points5 points ago

Terrans sounds better than earthlings.

[–]trvsmrph 0 points1 point ago

Came here to ask who gets to name these? I suppose whoever discovered them? Aldergaran sounds very Lord of the Ring-sy and Betelgeuse sounds like Beetlejuice. Does anyone know?

[–]cyphered 2 points3 points ago

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Betelgeuse#Name Betelgeuse is from Arabic and it looks like it was named because of its position in the constellation. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Aldebaran The name Aldebaran is also Arabic, again because of the constellation it 'follows'.

I guess sometimes people see these stars and relate them to constellations and then one of the names just sticks.

[–]unamenottaken 1 point2 points ago

If the earth was 1 inch in diameter, V Y Canis Majoris would be 3.5 miles in diameter. Somebody had to do it.

[–]matttrick 1 point2 points ago

the problem with this is the inability to keep the continuity mentally. im curious, how big would VY have to be, to scale, to keep earth visible to the naked eye? say, if this were beamed onto a side of a huge mountain like one of those laser light shows..

[–]DrJudgmental 1 point2 points ago

This image is not intuitive. It would be better as a single strip.

While breaking it into 6 frames certainly makes it easier to accommodate the massive scale difference between Mercury and Canis Majoris, it requires too much mental scale-shifting.

I think this hack-job I did in 3 minutes is slightly better, since you can progress in a linear fashion: http://i.imgur.com/ChHLO.jpg

However, obviously the videos and interactive visualizations are better.

[–]Commander_Spock 0 points1 point ago

I've always had a hard time visualizing the scale with these images. It would be more effective to compare Betelgeuse, VV Cephei, etc with the size of our solar system. That way I can look at VY Canis Majoris and think,"Wow, if that star was at the center of the solar system, I'd still be inside the star's inner mantel. Probably around the carbon layer."

[–]not2close 0 points1 point ago

we are less than a spec of dust

[–]shundog 0 points1 point ago

If you guys think this is crazy you should look up super massive black holes.

[–]Fennels 0 points1 point ago*

It's hard to visualize because it is a shitty way of representing data. What they need to do is have a plain black image, with the earth as one white pixel, and VY CMa as a plain white orb — as big as it takes to get an accurate representation.

Edit: Kind of like this, except this is the against the sun.

Fun fact: VY Canis Majoris is approximately 3 billion kilometers (1.9 billion miles) in diameter

[–]ELDERPE 0 points1 point ago

This is insane.

[–]lolwuuut 0 points1 point ago

Ive never felt so small

[–]aspirations27 0 points1 point ago

If you've never read Pale Blue Dot by Carl Sagan, check it out. Book will blow your mind.

[–]alexu3939 0 points1 point ago

Awesome video showing the same thing http://www.wimp.com/sizestar/

[–]Skafsgaard 0 points1 point ago

Aldebaran - that's from Star Wars, right?

[–]shabutaru118 0 points1 point ago

No its not.

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point ago

I got a headache just looking at this, curse you

[–]sonanz 0 points1 point ago

That's nothing! Consider the size of the star that's casting those shadows!

[–]Piscator629 0 points1 point ago

Bullshit, Betelgeuse is a red giant and Antares is a white giant. I now feel like the smartest person in the room.

[–]groftsnurw 0 points1 point ago

uranus is pretty big...

[–]ereiv 0 points1 point ago

Hold the fuckin phone. Wolf 359 is a real place??

Mind. Blown.

[–]Gamper33 0 points1 point ago

[–]hackysack 0 points1 point ago

And yet, I have.

[–]deeznutz12 0 points1 point ago

Hard to imagine size on that kind of scale.

[–]BobbySweets 0 points1 point ago

Can not imagine this… I am in awe! Great post.

[–]lamqta 0 points1 point ago

That said, we're definitely making progress.

[–]Muffytuff 0 points1 point ago

Very cool,my 5th grade science teacher had a chart in her class that says the same thing

[–]mqduck 0 points1 point ago

I'm so goddamn small!

[–]drennon3 0 points1 point ago

Uhh, you have to say beetle juice 3 times....

[–]scstraus 0 points1 point ago

I don't know, after about the 40th time it's quite possible.

[–]pwnetah 0 points1 point ago

[–]canadamoose18 0 points1 point ago

Solar system so humangous beeg

[–]sgrwck 0 points1 point ago

I like that the largest one roughly translates to "Big Dog"

[–]surly_redditor 0 points1 point ago

No. No it is not

[–]Cheddarwurst 0 points1 point ago

It'd be funny if someone edited a clip from Beetlejuice, so that they accidentally say Betelgeuse, and the entire solar system is vaporized.

[–]NYHCxPurity 0 points1 point ago

Link for a bit.

[–]injekted 0 points1 point ago

I'm showing this to my doctor next time he tells me I'm overweight.

[–]VanceDiezel 0 points1 point ago

mind=BLOWN

[–]king_hippo77 0 points1 point ago

It's easier to get tired of looking at this picture if your daughter is an annoying orange fan. Suddenly they're all tweaked out and laughing and trying (but failing) to be funny.

[–]colinsteadman 0 points1 point ago

If we swooped out our sun with VY Canis Majoris, we'd all be inside the thing right now, and it probably wouldn't even notice.

"How insignificant we are, with our pygmy little world!- An atom glinting with uncounted myriads of other atom worlds in a broad shaft of light streaming from God's countenance..." — Mark Twain, The Bible According to Mark Twain

[–]BroskydaGreat 0 points1 point ago

Louie Giglio did a sermon-type-thing on this, though I can't seem to remember what the video was called, it should be fairly easy to look up.

[–]alancar 0 points1 point ago

especially since someone posts it twice a wk

[–]TH0UGHTP0LICE 0 points1 point ago

I call bullshit.

I see Wolf 359 but no Borge cube anywhere. Shenanigans. SHENANIGANS!!
