As an O's fan I'm having trouble breathing. We are being noticed!

As a Royals fan, I know the feel. We get our once-a-year spotlight on July 24 when the George Brett Pine Tar Incident gets its national media play.

You're gonna have a bad time.

[–]Eldorian 1 point2 points ago

True... but what surprises me is this year they actually have the talent to compete - except for their pitching. If they could pick up a couple solid starters who can go long innings and not rely on fucking Bruce Chen as their ace they might actually be able to stay in a game longer than 4 innings.

[–][deleted] 5 points6 points ago

YOU DO NOT SPEAK POORLY OF MASTER CHEN

[–]Babrook 0 points1 point ago

For the Royals? Shouldn't be a huge surprise. That farm system has been LOADED with offense for a while now.

They just don't have the pitching to match, and it will be a shame watching all the offense be squandered.

[–]supermegaultrajeremy 2 points3 points ago

Yes. Lots of players will have some resin either on the bat between the handle and barrel or on their helmet. They rub their hands on it and it helps grip.

[–]hijklmno 20 points21 points ago

Ditching the O's for the Nats is like having a beautiful classic '64 Mustang that doesn't run anymore, then selling it to buy a '93 Taurus that doesn't run either (and from a Canadian, no less).

Although, more accurately, both cars run a couple months out of the year, they just break down in May or June.

[–]supermegaultrajeremy 1 point2 points ago

Hey I grew up a Redskins fan in NC. When the Panthers came along, all the fairweather bandwagon 'skins fans converted and everybody was happy! That being said, as a lifelong O's fan, I have no problem rooting for the Nats as my NL team.

[–]boxman27 12 points13 points ago

Except that's pretty often....

[–]ErinIzAwesome 2 points3 points ago

Maybe it is now, but it hasn't always been! The ravens will never be the media darling like the pats or the steelers or Indianapolis (although I think that had more to do with Manning).

[–]seafoamstratocaster 5 points6 points ago

LOL. You're crazy. They're one of the most talked about teams in the league and have only been a team for ~15 years.

[–]thephenom21 1 point2 points ago

umm what about the cowboys? they are the worst.

[–]poneil 0 points1 point ago

Basically it just goes by who's good/who has a big star. The pats got no media attention, even after their Super Bowl-winning 2001 season. It wasn't until they started getting more championships that they became beloved by the media.

Scumbag Mark Reynolds: hits ~.160, can't play defense, leaves skipper hanging

[–]Babrook 27 points28 points ago*

It's funny because based on Reyenolds' performance this year, he is hardly one of the 'cool kids'.

.157/.277/.271 1 HR, second in strikeouts. UGH. He also can't field for poop. The lack of power (1 HR, .271 slugging) is absolutely appalling since the only reason this dude is in the majors still is because he 1) gets walks and 2) hits homeruns (or 3) Strikes out). Three True Outcomes.

Also, http://www.baltimoresun.com/sports/orioles/blog/bal-explaining-mark-reynolds-spurning-of-buck-showalter-20120504,0,5300554.story?track=rss

Context.

[–]DIP_MY_BALLS_IN_IT 24 points25 points ago

Fun fact: Only four times in the history of baseball has a player had 200 or more strikeouts in a season. Mark Reynolds is three of those times.

[–]Babrook 2 points3 points ago*

That is impressive. What is also impressive, to me at least, is how the historic view of strike outs has changed - looking at the top 10 single season strikeout leaders NINE of them are current players. Bobby Bonds is in 10th place.

Mark Reynolds, Adam Dunn, Ryan Howard (who struck out 199 times twice), Jack Cust, and Drew Stubbs. These are players who strike out enough that 20 years ago they would have never been given a shot in the majors. Jim Thome as well lead the league in SO numerous times and that dude is headed straight to the Hall of Fame. If Adam Dunn regains form I think he may have a shot as well. Perhaps Ryan Howard as well.

[–]islesrule224 4 points5 points ago

He couldnt field the poop if he tried either.

[–]CartoonExperience 7 points8 points ago

Being a good hitter is about getting on base. Batting average is meaningless. You could never get a hit, but draw a walk every other at-bat and be a valuable contributor to your team.

[–]th3An0nyMoose 5 points6 points ago

batting average isn't meaningless, it's just over emphasized. Someone with al OBP of .350 all hits is going to be way more valuable than someone with an OBP of .350 all walks.

[–]CartoonExperience 1 point2 points ago

Yes i was exaggerating slightly i admit.

BA is essentially useless though. You get a much more effective idea of a player's prowess at the plate by looking at OPS, wRC+ etc.

[–]Redebo 1 point2 points ago

He used to be a pretty solid 3rd baseman for the Diamondbacks, but for some reason his batting is exactly as you describe. He either walks, hits a home run, or strikes out. That's not what you need to be a solid contributor to your team. I remember games when all we had the go ahead on 2nd or 3rd and all Mark had to do was hit a deep fly ball for either a sacrifice, or just make contact and get it out of the infield to score the run.

He goes up and tries to hit one to Nevada and strikes out.

[–]Babrook 2 points3 points ago

That's not what you need to be a solid contributor to your team.

Strongly disagree. There are numerous players that fall into this category which are considered to be great contributors (Adam Dunn is the best example from this generation, Jim Thome to a lesser extent). Since players of this sort walk a fair bit, their on base percentage makes up for their low batting average. Batting average is overrated

Not saying they're all incredible players, but to say that Mark Reynolds (prior to this year), Adam Dunn, Russel Branyan, Jim Thome, etc aren't solid contributors is outdated thinking.

[–]Redebo 0 points1 point ago

The guy is averaging over 200 strike-outs over the past four years while his batting average is in the low .200's.

Don't get me wrong, we loved Mark when he played for the D-backs. It just appears to me that he's either not listening to his hitting coaches or doesn't care to.

[–]Babrook 1 point2 points ago

Adam Dunn did an interview with Intentional Talk last week that applies to this almost perfectly. He essentially said that his hitting coach told him that he wasn't a good hitter, he never will be, so he should quit pretending to be. There was some humor in it - but it's true. Hitters like Dunn, Reynolds, Cust AREN'T good hitters. If they get their pitch they can DESTROY it. They have a good eye so they can garner a fair amount of walks, but otherwise they'll usually just hack away because that is what they do. They're not good hitters. That isn't to say they aren't contributors to a team. I personally think Dunn could be a hall of famer.

And batting coaches know that. They've known that since they were in the farm system. Players like this have a very specific skillset, and no amount of coaching will ever make them a .300 hitter.

[–]tegurit34 0 points1 point ago

I remember games when all we had the go ahead on 2nd or 3rd and all Mark had to do was hit a deep fly ball for either a sacrifice, or just make contact and get it out of the infield to score the run.

It's not very common for players to have the bat control necessary to adjust their approach to the situation. There's Derek Jeter, Ichiro, and maybe a small handful of others who can be successful in that fashion.

[–]lanboyo 0 points1 point ago

In general they like him for this, better a K than a double play.

[–]supermegaultrajeremy 0 points1 point ago

Well we did just sign Tejada, so Reynolds better step it up. Hardy, too.

[–]austinhannah 0 points1 point ago

Haha, there is no way Miguel Tejada is better than anyone currently on the roster. Maybe this will get Reynolds in gear, though.

[–]Spacetronaut 0 points1 point ago

I honestly don't think that's why it's funny. I think it's the high-five thing.

[–]Babrook 0 points1 point ago

Oh, I know that the baseball analysis is certainly not the reason it was posted here. Just trying to add some context.

[–]VertigoFall 7 points8 points ago

[–]VertigoFall 0 points1 point ago

I felt bad for the following few days :(

[–]PIG20 12 points13 points ago

A little note on the situation there. That was Reynolds (Sherriff Of Swattingham) first homer run of the season. So the guys in the dugout purposely didnt congratulate him as a joke. He was caught off guard so much that he didnt even notice poor manager Buck trying to give him a high five. Go O's.

[–]maxtheterp 2 points3 points ago

I love that nickname. I guess you listen to 105.7 the fan as well.

[–]PIG20 1 point2 points ago

Sometimes. It's hard listening to the callers. I love my O's and Ravens but the fans that call into these shows are total idiots. I'd rather not waste my time. But I do like Jeremy and Scott. When he called him the Sheriff Of Swattingham, I almost threw up.

[–]islesrule224 0 points1 point ago

I didnt know John Sterling also did commentary for the Orioles.

[–]maxtheterp 0 points1 point ago

No, but fun fact, he did get his start in Baltimore with the then Baltimore Bullets and Morgan State Bears football.

[–]ferrari1320 0 points1 point ago

hiyooo

[–]dablya 0 points1 point ago

shake it and jiggle it yo... who made that track?

[–]CptWake 1 point2 points ago

Shouldn't that be Sherriff of Swattingair? Guy is the strikeout king after all.

[–]lanboyo 0 points1 point ago

Way to go Mark, almost got a homer in april. His fielding is getting better. But it couldn't get worse I suppose.

[–]ekillian[S] 5 points6 points ago

Some of you (very few) are taking the title way too seriously. I'm a college grad. There aren't really "cool kids" anymore.

[–]mistieboo 11 points12 points ago

You're gonna go far kid

[–]ant_upvotes 6 points7 points ago

I can feel for this one, I'm about to go to my cousin's daughter's frist birthday. My cousin's were always the cool kids in the family, there just.. so damn cool. So ya.. I pretty much get really nervous and try my best not to be socially awkward penguin. Which usually ends up me thinking out the things i'm going to say too much, which then results in me not saying things for lack of feeling stupid, when eventually resulted in my being labeled the "quiet" cousin but nothing is further from the truth when I'm around anyone else.

[–]PercyChuggs 1 point2 points ago

[–]vsal 1 point2 points ago

My O's are on the front page. The Mayans were right.

[–]BBmachine 1 point2 points ago

I think his clapping, however needed, should have stopped earlier in preparation for the high five while giving enough time for pre-high five eye contact. This guy although does know how to recover from the neglected high five though so i give him props for that

[–]kawaiigardiner 12 points13 points ago

Remember the about the cool kids:"high school hero, real life zero".

[–]JoelLikesPigs 44 points45 points ago

They are cool in school and end up getting a sweet house with a pool.

[–]red321red321 2 points3 points ago

don't forget giant penguins too. who doesn't love a giant penguin? just billy apparently.

[–][deleted] 35 points36 points ago

That's just what they tell you in high school to make you feel better. All my losery friends and I are on average less successful than the cool kids, but it's only five years out of high school so maybe things will change. Oh, and you're going to have to develop social skills no matter what field you get into. I was so disappointed when I found this out.

You're just giving high school kids unrealistic expectations.

[–][deleted] 11 points12 points ago

Agreed. People give me shit because I'm popular, and think I'm stupid. I'm actually pretty smart, and have social skills to boost. Real life +2

[–]kawaiigardiner 1 point2 points ago*

Then obviously you have no experience of what it is like in the real world - employers don't give two brass tacks whether you were the 'head boy', or the 'top cheerleader' or the 'captain of the first fifteen' or the 'guy who wears the latest cool name brand gear". When you get to university no one gives a shit if you turn up wearing name brand clothes, put 2kg of gel in your hair, or whether you've plastered your face in make up. When I was at university the first people to drop out or to take the difficult degree then downgrade to an easy one majoring in unmarketable areas were the 'cool kids' because god forbid them spending the weekends studying instead of partying! (Yes, and these Einstein's found Philosophy difficult to understand - I was in a class where 5 students pulled out and took a nice easy subject in one airy-fairy departments).

My experience tells me that those who didn't fuck around at high school, knuckled down, studied, shunned the 'parties' and 'booze ups' with the 'popular kids' are now earning 6 figure incomes whilst the 'cool kids' are earning barely above the minimum wage at the local video store. I can think of at least a dozen of my friends who would be considered 'social rejects' who now have jobs they enjoy, happily married and either have kids on soon to have them. Equally I know all the cool kids who thought they were top shit and the rest of the school worshipped the ground they're walking on barely making ends meet, choosing dead end jobs because the well paying ones, surprise surprise, don't give a shit about how popular they were at high school.

For me, I was never 'at the top' (I was average-ish) nor have I ever actually given a shit about making it big - I've run my own business, I've done my own thing and quite frankly I wouldn't give up the freedom I have so that I can be a bitch to some corporate master to make a few extra bucks. If I can earn enough to give myself a warm house, food the belly and enough left over for the occasional treat for myself why the hell do I need anything more than that? I've completed my Degree (Bachelor of Arts majoring in Religious Studies and Philosophy) with an average of a B+ (a real B+, not an American B+ which is the equivalent of a C- in most other countries) and quite frankly I take greater joy in interests outside my work - my occupation doesn't define who I am as a person.

Edit: To anyone seeing the contradiction between the first part and the final part of this post - the difference is that these cool kids tend to have nothing outside small talk and their shitty jobs; they're shallow, vapid dead shits who quite frankly chock up the local ER needing their stomach pumped after too much alcohol, get into accidents with their boy racer friends, or think that sending 30000 texts per month is remotely normal. Cool kids tend to be unbalanced fucks who wouldn't know how to balance out their life if their existence depended on it.

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point ago

Bachelor of Arts majoring in Religious Studies and Philosophy

But that is an airy fairy degree...

[–]kawaiigardiner 0 points1 point ago

Interesting that you ignore this:

(Yes, and these Einstein's found Philosophy difficult to understand - I was in a class where 5 students pulled out and took a nice easy subject in one airy-fairy departments).

I never said the subjects I took were exceptionally hard but just noting that even these 'popular kids' couldn't handle classes the likes of you ridicule. How about next time reading the whole post instead of scanning through it then assuming you have get the remotest grasp of what I'm talking about.

[–][deleted] 16 points17 points ago

That's the warm, fuzzy, 1980s made-for-TV movie view on the subject. That's not how it really works. Most of the people who were losers in high school were losers because they were awkward and didn't know how to behave around people. I've gotten more shit from being awkward and nervous around people at work than I have during high school. I've probably been bullied more at work than in high school too, but the kids in my high school were pretty nice.

[–]Thinks_Reddit_Is_RPG 0 points1 point ago

Holy shit, where do you work? That sounds like a horrible work environment...

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point ago

Two different places. I bring out the worst in people. I'm so nervous and bad at communicating that they don't even realize they're crossing the line after a while because I don't know how to react when they do cross it so after a few months, they're putting me down outright like it's nothing. It will happen anywhere. It's a bit like blaming the victim but people are a lot more like animals than you realize and you really need to know how to act around them or else they act out.

[–]Thinks_Reddit_Is_RPG 0 points1 point ago

I don't doubt what you're saying, but have you considered looking for other work? Maybe a fresh start is what you need.

[–]torsojones 8 points9 points ago

I have grown up an Orioles fan (I'm 14) but have never had a passion for the O's like my dad. He was around my age when he experienced the '69 and '71 World Series losses. He told me he was heartbroken. I wish that today's Orioles could bring me that same sort of passion for a baseball team.

I feel like baseball pants will eventually resemble Jnco jeans...

[–]Jennyd242 0 points1 point ago

That has happened to me before, it's always worse when someone witnesses it. The same goes for when someone waves at someone behind you.

There was an awesome example of this in the Colbert Report last night. He ran out to hug a few audience members and one guy definitely got left hanging. I'd post link but I'm at work.

[–]XxXNightstalkerX 0 points1 point ago

He actually played it off pretty well. To me it was like a "High five..no? FUCK you then."

This reminds me of me, and then I get sad.

[–]eeks12 0 points1 point ago
