Avengers? Avengers.

[–]gR3ypH0x 10 points11 points ago

The audience at my showing clapped every 5 minutes. It was horrible.

[–]MbMn91 11 points12 points ago

Made me remember why I stopped going to midnight movies.

OMG, THE HULK PUNCHED A GUY? clapclapclapclap

HOLY SHIT, THE BIG MONSTER THING EXPLODED? clapclapclapclap

JESUS CHRIST, A MOTHERFUCKING ONE LINER? clapclapclapclap

Shit was endless.

[–]gR3ypH0x 2 points3 points ago

Exactly. I don't my clapping or laughter or various other noises, when they are genuinely deserved. Not for every minor little thing.

[–]lovesmasher 2 points3 points ago

Clapping at a movie is like sitting in the back seat of your deaf friend's car and talking to them while they're driving. It's disrespectful and the people you're addressing can't fucking hear you.

[–]Nickthelegend 2 points3 points ago

SPOILERS?!?! wtf!

[–]nodefect 1 point2 points ago

Yeah, I totally expected the Hulk not to punch anyone, and the big monster thing to win and kill everyone. Srsly T_T

[–]backhudson 0 points1 point ago

Every time Hulk punched a guy, or Tony Stark made a joke at Cap. it was like Beethoven rose from the grave and started playing a show. I missed so much dialogue because I couldn't hear it over the clapping. Surprisingly, the people at the Harry Potter midnight premieres are respectful, and don't clap till the credits roll.

[–]GlennBecksChalkboard 41 points42 points ago

I haven't been to the movies for quite some time, but do people actually do that? I have no recollection of anyone ever applauding in a cinema.

[–]BiffSkiffer 58 points59 points ago

I just came back from the Avengers, and everyone started clapping at the end, I don't get it, the movie screen doesn't have feelings.

[–]SmokeDiverFF 35 points36 points ago

I don't think the clapping is meant for the movie itself, but rather the crowds collective way of saying, "hey guys, I too enjoyed watching this movie with you all." It doesn't make sense, but at the same time I can see a crowd starting to feel a little connected in a way that they want to share emotions. Laugh at the funny parts together, root when the bad guys get whooped, clap when the movie is over. I get it.

[–]ukiyoe 5 points6 points ago

Next time I hear a grunt in the bathroom stalls, you know what, I'll join in. Just a way of saying, "hey man, I know that feel."

[–]GenericOnlineName 8 points9 points ago

I actually like going to a movie like the Avengers and seeing it with a bigger crowd.

The funny parts get much more hilarious. The epic parts make you feel goosebumps.

I wouldn't have the same effect with such a movie if I were alone or just with a few friends.

[–]wq678 0 points1 point ago

I feel the same way. I feel like a part of reddit just hates people.

[–]muffinmonk 0 points1 point ago

Watching the Hulk just tear shit up in 3D made me smile and gape in awe.

I don't usually go to the cinemas (I probably go like once a year maybe) so I went by myself today cuz i said fuck it, it's the motherfucking Avengers. I went in the morning so not many people came in, but man was it was probably the best crowd I've ever been a part of. They laughed at the right moments, gasped at the right moments, and yelled HOLY SHIT at the exact right moments, and some guy shouted out "loki called her a cunt in old english" and everyone laughed. Normally people would find that annoying but I thought it was awesome.

[–]thebomb42 4 points5 points ago

And at our theatre, the people kept clapping at EVERYTHING. Anything that one of the avengers did that was even remotely funny, the screen would get an encore. It was so annoying.

[–]ohsnapitstheclap 4 points5 points ago

I went to the first showing of Twilight with my wife when it came out, and every fucking person clapped except my wife and I. Haven't been seen any of the others since. Felt really akward....

[–]CVBrownie 1 point2 points ago

Username irony.

[–]enigmatiksc 6 points7 points ago

I've only witnessed it at midnight showings.

[–]capnrico 0 points1 point ago

I saw it at a midnight showing last night for the first time in a long time. Must be that amped up atmosphere.

[–]IrrigatedPancake 12 points13 points ago

On movie days, in elementary school, teachers gave out punishments to kids who clapped.

[–]Whenthenighthascome 1 point2 points ago

ಠ_ಠ

What the fuck is wrong with schools. Seriously? I hope you're joking.

[–]larkable 4 points5 points ago

Nope, you had to do the clams or you were punished for being disruptive.

[–]joeyheartbear 0 points1 point ago

Wait, "do the clams"? Is this a typo or am I completely out of touch?

[–]cohrt 1 point2 points ago

i hope he isn't

[–]IrrigatedPancake 0 points1 point ago

I know, right? They have really lost sight of what's important. Somebody needs to teach these idiots that the movie actors can't hear you. It is just a recording. Stop making yourselves look like fools.

[–]Ardal 1 point2 points ago

I never saw this done until I moved to the USA where I saw it frequently in movie theatres in many states, initially I thought it was for the projectionist or something, now I just take the opportunity to get the fuck out whilst they are still clapping ;)

[–]dzadnik 2 points3 points ago

Clap for the cameras!

[–]DigUpStupid 0 points1 point ago

Projectors.

[–]theowne 1 point2 points ago

At film festivals, yes.

[–]Fvel 23 points24 points ago

I can imagine clapping where the cast and producers are present, but in a random theatre? It's like clapping at the end of a book...

[–]Rhymen0cerous 13 points14 points ago

I'm slightly embarrassed to say I have clapped at the end of a book. It was a surprise ending, I had to give props.

[–]RickDicolus 1 point2 points ago

How many claps? If it was three or fewer you're okay, but if it's more you're weird and okay.

[–]ztherion 0 points1 point ago

I clap when someone tells a really good one-liner.

[–]barter_ 2 points3 points ago

Haha, that would be hilarious. Maybe we should clap at the end of a tv series episode too.

[–]Theappunderground 0 points1 point ago

What do you mean, Im not supposed to spike the book into the ground then start clapping at the end of a gripping novel?

[–]theowne 0 points1 point ago

I think the fact you read a book alone, and you watch a movie as a group, makes your analogy just a little bit out of place.

[–]PotatoPop 1 point2 points ago

I didn't go see any movies for a few years until this past fall. I've never been more confused when the theater erupted in applause. Makes no sense and I'm sure the theater staff are laughing at these people.

[–]felixjawesome 16 points17 points ago

I have a friend who intentionally start's clapping at the end of movies (or at the end of a good scene) to see if he can get other people to join in.

It usually works and it's hilarious.

[–]cohrt 2 points3 points ago

fuck him

[–]felixjawesome 0 points1 point ago

At least he didn't yell "COME ON! groan" at the end of Inception like half of the audience.

[–]xHeero 1 point2 points ago

So funny man...

[–]pizzlethizzle 1 point2 points ago

My brothers and I were once dragged to a showing of the children's Nutcracker when we were in elementary school and we did the same thing. We started clapping after anything happened and got the whole theater to join us.

[–]BertrandLoganberry 13 points14 points ago

"Bravo, projectionist! You did a positively sterling job of pressing that button!"

[–]Ect0plazm 2 points3 points ago

I occasionally worked as an Usher in my movie theater and I would always bow with my broom and dustpan. Truly felt like they were applauding my ability to sweep popcorn under the seats.

[–]zim2411 0 points1 point ago

To be fair, projectionists do have to manually switch projectors several times during a movie if they're using a dual projector setup. I don't think they are very common anymore though.

upvote for how awkward the end of that sentence was

[–]RickDicolus 1 point2 points ago

What was awkward about it, the capitalization or the punctuation?

[–]u300021 0 points1 point ago

neither, just the four word fill-in for bitch with three fairly "big" words made it sound funny to me.

[–]docblue 0 points1 point ago

When I was an usher I did. Then as the people were leaving I'd ask my coworkers (quite loudly) what kind of moron claps after movies. Got a few complaints and one high five.

[–]Simple_Jim 82 points83 points ago

What is more awkward than not clapping along with everyone else? Being the only guy in the whole theatre to laugh when Loki calls Black Widow a "mewling quim".

[–]wiggie2gone 31 points32 points ago

"Whining Cunt" for anyone not wanting to Google it.

[–]miss-havisham 5 points6 points ago

that was easily my favourite part of the movie. i snort-giggle whenever i think about it, and when people ask what's funny i'm like, "MEWLING QUIM." then they look blankly at my pig-impersonating mirth and decide i'm retarded. totally worth it though.

[–]AlonsoQ 1 point2 points ago

The only bit of comedy in the movie that wasn't cornier than the Iowa State Fair, but damn was it a good one.

[–]ashhead75 3 points4 points ago

Hands down greatest movie I've ever seen.

[–]TheOneWhoKnocksBitch 17 points18 points ago

It was an awesome movie, but I wouldn't call it the greatest. But that's just me, I guess.

[–]MasterBistro 13 points14 points ago

You should watch movies.

[–]rubber_duckyy 1 point2 points ago

I wouldn't say greatest, but definitely up there. Best super-hero movie I have ever seen though.

[–]Artreynne 0 points1 point ago

I'm gonna stick with "Puny god" being the best line in the film.

[–]rubber_duckyy 0 points1 point ago

Same thing happened to me.

[–]OswaldGoodGuy 9 points10 points ago

He may not have been blessed with height but he is ridiculously handsome for a little person.

[–]PseudoVestus 9 points10 points ago

Anyone care to give context on the gif?

[–]felixjawesome 20 points21 points ago

Dinklage claps for no one.

[–]alphaweiner 25 points26 points ago

The people are actually clapping for Dinklage. He just received an award or something. What is weird to me is that no one in the frame is looking at him even though they are clapping for him.

[–]Swinly 6 points7 points ago

He's probably just as weirded out by it.

[–]DavidTheBruce 0 points1 point ago

Tyrion Lannister claps for no one. FTFY

[–]Melnorme 7 points8 points ago

I don't know but his hair is a little messy. Not little like... I mean, fuck. His hair is messy. A regular, normal amount of... damn it.

[–]Zelcron 4 points5 points ago

I've heard that it was at an awards ceremony, and the clip in question is him as he's being nominated. It'd be kind of weird to clap for oneself.

That said, I have no confirmation of this as facts.

[–]lost-fate 4 points5 points ago

Speaking of clapping for yourself, it's what I loved about Jim Parsons in this clip

[–]BleachedWhale 0 points1 point ago

American's (on tv) love clapping for themselves.. It seems kinda weird..

[–]revallion93 1 point2 points ago

Could someone share the video clip? I must have missed this

[–]SyrioForel 1 point2 points ago

2012 Golden Globe Awards.

Peter Dinklage, star of "Game of Thrones", is nominated in the category of "Supporting Actor, TV Series, Mini-Series or TV Movie". The presenters of the award are reading off the list of nominees, and the camera pans to show each of them individually as the audience claps. This is what the gif shows.

Ten seconds later, he is announced as the winner.

[–]alphaweiner 0 points1 point ago

I believe Dinklage just received an award and the people are clapping for him.

[–]Squill2k4 4 points5 points ago

He is such a badass.

[–]CJRamze 4 points5 points ago

People clap during films? Nothing will do in a British Cinema but silence.

I remember watching a pirate copy of AVP all those years ago and I heard people cheering... I couldn't believe what I was hearing!

[–]klw17 48 points49 points ago

TIL some people go to public places to watch movies and are surprised that it is a public experience

[–]poohinmygruts 12 points13 points ago*

If they're being stupid about it... Well yeah. Who are they (or should I say you?) clapping for? There is no one there responsible for the content of that movie. Making slapping and hooting noises at the first impulse/need to express yourself is something a caveman does.

[–]alphaweiner 20 points21 points ago

My biggest pet peeve is when people express them selves! ASSHOELS!

[–]KyoskeMikashi 8 points9 points ago

My biggest pet peeve is represented right over there ^ ^ ^ ^

[–]RobertDobbs 5 points6 points ago

ASSHOEL

[–]DollarsforDerek 3 points4 points ago

I live in New Jersey. For extremely good movies, or if the crowd was large and hyped as fuck, people clapped at the end. It's like an adrenaline rush and people are just joining in on a collective appreciation of a film. They know no one who made the movie will fucking know. I had no idea people thought this was a dumb thing to do. It's like a performance I guess. Some people clap at the end.

[–]Severisth 3 points4 points ago

Just imagine watching a movie at home with your family. At the end, you start clapping, then stand up for a standing ovation, then start waving your family to stand up and join in. For a television screen.

That's how we feel when moviegoers do it. It's a screen, people! Of course, the trend is never going to die, so we just need a few years (or ten) to get used to it.

[–]HappyGiraffe 1 point2 points ago

I always thought clapping was more so related to the notion of the shared experience than anything else. Movies are social. We use them to communicate and connect. It's easy to turn a movie into an individual experience, but when you are in a theater, it's one of the rare moments when a group of strangers has elected to participate in a shared experience. I always felt like clapping was a way of saying, "This was an awesome shared experience and I'm glad we were all here together for it." By the end of a really high quality film, you share something with the audience that you didn't before, and that excites people because I think that particular feeling of connectedness can be difficult to come by.

[–]Severisth 1 point2 points ago

I, for one, am not there to socialize with the rest of the people there. I'm there because movies show in the theater first, because I can take a few friends, and because it's an outing.

If I could have a private theater for me and a few friends to go to, I would absolutely would.

And you can damn well bet we wouldn't clap.

[–]SpinningHead 0 points1 point ago

Public space /= your living room

[–]eaglescout218 11 points12 points ago

The worst part is when the people around you realize that you are not clapping and give you weird looks

[–]JerFlip 11 points12 points ago

People do that?

[–]bosephus256 6 points7 points ago

If someone started clapping after a movie I'd give them a weird look. I'm from Kansas, we don't do that here. Where in America do people clap after a movie? San Francisco?

[–]touchcoma 6 points7 points ago

I just saw The Avengers here in Dallas last night, there were several scenes that caused the audience to start clapping. I don't really get how someone can get that excited over a movie, but who am I to judge. I was cheering for the Skyrim preview at QuakeCon last year.

[–]idiogeckmatic 16 points17 points ago

at least there someone from bethseda may have been present, your cheers weren't directed at an inanimate screen.

[–]ColonicIrritation 4 points5 points ago

Your cheers were fully justified. Todd Howard was showing off the game he and his team had been working hard on for several years, people were applauding and cheering him as he demonstrated all the cool stuff his studio had created and was enjoying the praise from fans.

Clapping at a cinema screen is like giving a standing ovation in your own home at the end of a Gamer Of Thrones episode, or calling encore after watching a music video.

[–]neo1513 1 point2 points ago

I don't know if this was an isolated thing, but opening night of the Dark Knight, everyone was really high energy. And the fact that every part of that movie was touched by god himself didn't do anything to lessen the emotions.

There were 2 moments with clapping, the first was when Gordon pulled off that police mask, everyone in the audience went fucking crazy. And then at the end, our theater gave the movie a standing ovation. I must admit, I was balls deep in that shit.

[–]MightyMorph 2 points3 points ago

Damn Liberals and their clapping, where do they think they are? Some kind of lala lets go and clap our hands for wasting 2 hours of our life land?

Sheesh.

Son here in the south when were done in the movies, we go have a shot of whiskey, kill a snake, eat a stake and go to bed with a lit cigarette. Cuz life ain't funny unless its dangerous.

[–][deleted] 13 points14 points ago

eat a stake

sounds painful

[–]MightyMorph 5 points6 points ago

Son, you put some hot sauce on it, some bacon grease and pig fat, with a side of cobs, then you'll thank mary for another log, cuz goddammit, that is better than chicken.

[–]KungFuHamster 0 points1 point ago

There were some movies I saw when I was younger that got applause. Usually very touching movies that ended on a moving, uplifting scene.

[–]collegefailure1 0 points1 point ago

I'm pretty sure that every midnight premiere I've been to in Wichita (basically every blockbuster that had a midnight premiere) was followed by clapping much to my dismay. I saw the Avengers this afternoon at the Warren IMAX followed by fucking clapping. Don't be so sure that people from Kansas don't do this.

[–]DrMond 1 point2 points ago

old town Warren at midnight, standing ovation from the nerd herd, i usually see movies opening day if i plan on seeing them at all and there is always clapping... i Fucking hate it

[–]blazey 2 points3 points ago

The entire crowd of the theater I was in applauded at the end of The Chamber of Secrets when Dobby force pushes Lucious Malfoy. I had never, and have not since, been more ashamed to be part of a group of people in my life.

[–]rteuma 2 points3 points ago

Who the fuck claps at the end of a movie?

[–]Cold_Burrito 2 points3 points ago

People started clapping when my plane landed the other day. There wasn't anything special about the flight. It's like everyone was surprised that we made it without incident or something.

[–]lovesmasher 0 points1 point ago

At least that's congratulating the crew for a job well done in a location you share with them. Clapping in a movie is like going home, telling someone about the plane landing safely and then clapping.

[–]Cold_Burrito 0 points1 point ago

I guess it's just something I've noticed recently. 5 or more years ago I never saw people clapping for a flight well done.

[–]pmanly 4 points5 points ago

r/reactiongifs

[–]ChrisNW 4 points5 points ago

And on airplanes when they immediately touch down on the runway......WE STILL HAVE TIME TO CRASH AND DIE!!!!!!!!! Hold your applause.

[–]motagua 1 point2 points ago

Have you ever landed in Tegucigalpa, Honduras. Everyone claps because we are still alive, normally after the plane has almost stopped. That's the only flight I've been on where there was clapping.

The plane is turning almost until it lands and the runway is short.

[–]scotchtacos 1 point2 points ago

Did anyone else see snakes on a plane in theaters? If so did the whole entire place clap when Sam said that famous line?

[–]ImSamuelJacksonBitch 1 point2 points ago

i saw it. noone clapped. i am sad.

[–]CoverFire 1 point2 points ago

Half-man Is my favorite character! The imp is the shit!

[–]bloodwrench 1 point2 points ago

You're cool.

[–]MagisterAcroama 1 point2 points ago

Went to Avengers this afternoon, and people were clapping ALL THE TIME. Lights turn down? Clap. A major character's first scene? Clap. Stan Lee cameo? Cheer out loud. I think it's ridiculous.

The worst sort of clapping is clapping for a stand-up comic.

AHH HA I AGREE WITH WHAT HE'S SAYING ABOUT THIS THING THAT I ALSO FEEL AND HAVE ENCOUNTERED IN MY LIFE. LET ME SLAP MY PALMS TOGETHER.

Even a thoughtful, truth telling comic should make you laugh first and foremost.

[–]TheDarkness3 1 point2 points ago

What? People clap at movies?!

[–]phoenine 1 point2 points ago

"you guys know they can't hear you, right?.."

[–]TwasARockLobsta 1 point2 points ago

I'm convinced this is one of the best .gif's of all time.

[–]fungaljungle 1 point2 points ago

I'm guessing this was you at avengers last night?

[–]StigmaaH 6 points7 points ago

I'm British and my Film Studies teacher told us that Americans do this, is it true? If it is, then that's fucking stupid.

[–]jnethery 17 points18 points ago

Yes, people do it and it bewilders me. Who do they think they're clapping for? The filmmakers? Because they AREN'T FUCKING PRESENT IN THE THEATER.

I think it would be appropriate to applaud if the crew was actually in the audience, but otherwise you're just praising the fucking air.

It's like listening to a song on your iPod and then fucking cheering as if you're at a concert. It just doesn't make sense.

[–]Baelorn 35 points36 points ago

Who do they think they're clapping for?

I'm pretty sure it's just a way for a large group of strangers to express mutual appreciation for what they just watched.

Also, I haven't been to the movies in over a year but before then it was fairly uncommon. Maybe it has really taken off.

[–]jnethery 0 points1 point ago

I guess I get the intention, but it's just awkward in my opinion.

[–]Baelorn 9 points10 points ago

I don't disagree. I just find it funny that so many people, instead of thinking for half a second, go "herp derp they must be so dumb they think the actors are behind the screen!".

[–]daRoach 11 points12 points ago

So because you feel awkward then someone who enjoyed themselves should have to change their actions? I'm tired of the fucking superiority complex on some of the people around here. Just let people enjoy and feel good about what makes them feel good.

Growing up I had to endure people who thought they knew better than I did or felt that they were better than I was because I didn't fit into their view of what was normal. I think a lot of us went through that in school and beyond and feel the need to take it out on other people. You're no better than the ones who did the same thing to us when we were young.

[–]SurlySasquatch 7 points8 points ago

I know, right?! And when people laugh during a funny part...it's not like it's a stand up comedy show. Keep that shit to yourself. Or when people cry during sad moments? It's not like those people really died. They're just actors.

Or you all can stop being elitist pricks and let people express their feelings about a fucking movie however they want.

I, personally, do not clap after movies but I am also completely devoid of emotion. Except anger. It flows through my veins.

[–]jnethery 1 point2 points ago

Right, as if laughing, a natural response to something is the same thing as clapping, an intentional response.

It doesn't bug me that much that people clap at the end of a movie, it's just awkward.

[–]SurlySasquatch 4 points5 points ago

Some people's natural reaction to seeing or experiencing something they found thrilling or entertaining is to clap or hoot or holler.

It just happens to not be your natural reaction.

And clearly, it does bother you since you felt the need to post about it. Your response bothered me because I don't like people who find petty things like clapping after a movie to be anger inducing.

If it's so awkward just get up and leave when the movie is over.

[–]syphilitic 0 points1 point ago

Clapping is not a spontaneous show of emotion that can't be helped like laughter or tears.

[–]SurlySasquatch 0 points1 point ago

Laughter and tears can both be controlled. Only in extreme circumstances can you not control a laugh or tears when it's in regards to a movie.

And the fact remains, it's none of your concern if someone wants to clap after a movie. It's no different then posting some idiotic post on facebook like "Well done, Chris Nolan. Dark knight wad great." If Nolan isn't your friend then who the fuck are you talking to?

Seriously, just let people do the little things that make them feel like they are a part of something.

Life is just a series of illusions we allow ourselves to be fooled by.

If it really bothers you there's only one thing you can do....

FUCK OFF

[–]bmwnut 1 point2 points ago

I agree, I think clapping in the theaters is silly. Then you made your ipod analogy, and I realized that watching the youtube feed from Coachella I cheered on Radiohead and Snoop / Dre during their performances, which is basically like clapping for my ipod. In my case, I was expressing my delight at the awesomeness of experiencing the music. And, red wine.

[–]jnethery 2 points3 points ago

I cheered during the intro to Scott Pilgrim vs. The World.

TL;DR: Don't do drugs, kids

[–]scrabblex 0 points1 point ago

It happened in Ohio when I used to live there, and it's happened at every movie I've been to in South Carolina as well.

[–]daRoach 2 points3 points ago

Who the fuck cares? We are clapping for ourselves maybe? We are clapping because it's what's done when you enjoy yourself maybe? Fuck you and the stick up your ass.

[–]jnethery 1 point2 points ago

Once again, cry more.

[–]ImSamuelJacksonBitch -1 points0 points ago

I wish I had 10,000 upvotes for you. People who clap in theaters are the dumbest fucks and I want to pour my soda on them and ruin their joy.

[–]IrrigatedPancake 0 points1 point ago

Where do you live? Maybe it is a regional thing.

[–]DoubleCMahoney 1 point2 points ago

Having lived in both Washington State and Texas and seeing this, I'm guessing it's not a regional thing

[–]TheModernEgg 2 points3 points ago

Happens in AZ too. It's fucking dumb.

[–]ImSamuelJacksonBitch 3 points4 points ago

Dumb people will now be downvoting you. But that's ok, they are fucking dumb, and they will know for sure they are dumb when they hit the down arrow, then read my comment. Then they will downvote me. But I don't care, I have lots of worthless karma to spare and give zero fucks.

[–]TheModernEgg 1 point2 points ago

Thanks for your intelligent support. But don't worry, I can spare fake internet points as well. Here comes one for you now!

[–]TheModernEgg 1 point2 points ago

Oh shit, I wish I could double-upvote you for post and username. Whoa.

[–]jnethery -1 points0 points ago

Florida.

[–]MisterMcDuck 1 point2 points ago

Floridian here, it's happened at every great movie that I've went to in theaters.

[–]Erzsabet 1 point2 points ago

Not always. I've only seen it once or twice, most of the time though they don't.

[–]IrrigatedPancake 1 point2 points ago

I've never experienced it.

[–]JCelsius 2 points3 points ago

It doesn't happen in most audiences, but if it's a hyped up action movie (Like the Avengers or Transformers) on opening weekend I guarantee there will be a couple people clapping at "cool' parts. It annoys me to no end. Who are they clapping for?

[–]lovesmasher 0 points1 point ago

If they're at Transformers, they're the kind of person who doesn't understand that the Transformers can't hear their clapping.

[–]JCelsius 1 point2 points ago

I would agree if it were Transformers 2 or 3 but the first one I actually attended thinking it might be good. Someone else might honestly have made the same mistake.

[–]lovesmasher 0 points1 point ago

I'll allow it.

[–]fecallube 2 points3 points ago

I try to justify the stupidity by assuming those types of people are giving their thanks to the projectionist.

[–]wilkor 1 point2 points ago

I lived in indonesia for a while. They do it there. But they're asian, they're allowed to be fucking strange (source: japan)

[–]BertrandLoganberry 0 points1 point ago

Throw in a few "Hooo YEAH!"s and a chant of "U-S-A U-S-A!"

[–]ImSamuelJacksonBitch 1 point2 points ago

oh god i would punch someone.

[–]NullSleepN64 -1 points0 points ago

It sounds like the end of a special school trip, I can't believe people actually do this. /British

[–]Trevid -1 points0 points ago

I'm an American and I have never seen this done in a movie theater.

[–]Louman_Pwnz 1 point2 points ago

I never got this phenomenon either. Though I gotta admit it seemed pretty fitting when the theater did it at the end of The Artist.

[–]mjq03 1 point2 points ago

If I see this .gif one more time....

[–]theomeny 1 point2 points ago

The most inappropriate-clapping experience for me is when people applaud when an aeroplane touches down. If I'm flying with you, the very least I expect is that you're able to land the fucking thing.

[–]Girls_Name 2 points3 points ago

I live in the Seattle area and it happens here and it bugs the HELL out of me. No one can hear you! You already showed your appreciation for the movie by paying $12 to see it!

[–]blinddevil117 2 points3 points ago

This is hands down my biggest pet peeve. Unless you are at a Q&A or something and people who are actually involved with the film are there, this is completely pointless.

[–]CeruleanOak 0 points1 point ago

I don't remember people clapping in theaters before the Star Wars Special Editions. Am I right that this is around when it started?

[–]dang_Ling_modify_her 0 points1 point ago

No. People clapped at the end of Schindler's List when I saw it. Probably been going on before that, too.

[–]Severisth 0 points1 point ago

It's becoming more and more common. Now it's strange if you don't clap at the end of a movie.

[–]brawler700 0 points1 point ago

JOHN BELUSHI IS ALIVE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

[–]miss-havisham 0 points1 point ago

you, sir, are my hero for bringing this .gif into my life.

[–]Pillagerguy 0 points1 point ago

Transformers 2... almost flipped my shit.

[–]sumZy 0 points1 point ago

source?

[–]NeonMe 0 points1 point ago

Stop clapping at the end of The Avengers people.

[–]Stezieman 0 points1 point ago

When Hulk punched Thor in the Avengers everyone in the theaters started laughing and clapping. T'was pretty funny,

[–]pwnyoface 0 points1 point ago

lol ya, dafuq are they thinking? no one involved in the movies will hear their applause

[–]Tx35 0 points1 point ago

As a former projectionist I used to think they were clapping for me for not fucking up the reel.

[–]Yeayohaha 0 points1 point ago

Its the clapping in between the movie that's quite annoying especially when it's so loud you cant even hear the person speak.

[–]ColonicIrritation 0 points1 point ago

I have NEVER seen anyone clap at a movie. I've only seen movies at theatres in England and Norway, though... maybe it's a cultural thing.

[–]Toolism 0 points1 point ago

so the movie ended and you can basically go home, but you instead decide to make a stand about something that does not concern you in any way? Douche alert!

[–]DavidTheBruce 0 points1 point ago

The hand of the King claps for no one.

[–]andyboylan 0 points1 point ago

nobody claps at movies in England. I can imagine it being bloody annoying

[–]Deathflid 0 points1 point ago

It has never happened to me, might not be a thing people in the UK do, but clapping at the end of a movie just seems to me analogous to screaming "I LOVE LAMP." at a lamp.

[–]Willzay 0 points1 point ago

Only witnessed applauds once and that was at the end of Spiderman 3. I was do disappointed with them and just turned around and starred at them in disgust.

I'm imagine clapping and general noise to show enjoyment is most common in the US? Us British like it nice and quiet.

[–]beetrootburger 0 points1 point ago

As an Australian Ive never heard clapping at the end of a film and it would freak me the fuck out if I did

[–]ryukman1 0 points1 point ago

... I threw my iron man mask into the crowd of people that was clapping... They replied to me with a coke to the face

[–]Anonymousdave69 0 points1 point ago

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point ago

I like to start the clapping, stop, then watch everyone clapping clapping clapping away

[–]Glakus 0 points1 point ago

You know, I can't stand it when I go to a bar to watch a sporting event, and everyone starts clapping whenever a good play is made. I mean - it's not like the TV has emotions, what are they applauding.......

...

[–]Starwars_ent 0 points1 point ago

I am right there with you guys. It was driving me nuts last night when people were cheering and clapping during the movie. That being said The Avengers was legen wait for it dary.

[–]Trojanbp 0 points1 point ago

took me a second to get that, gj

[–]SKURITYYYYY 0 points1 point ago

My friend and I got tickets to a private screening to Act of Valor before it was released. There were reserved seats for some military people and everyone clapped at the end. I did too. It felt... right, I suppose.

[–]xHeero 3 points4 points ago

"Anyone who doesn't clap is a terrorist...Patriot Act."

[–]meanthinker 0 points1 point ago

Aww... clapping at the end of a movie makes you guys feel odd?

Try watching a movie at a small-town cinema in India - clapping, whistling, shouting, outright dancing in the aisles AND in front of the screen — DURING the movie — at funny scenes, action scenes, the songs, all the way right through to the end.

This does NOT happen at the western-style Multiplex Cinemas in the more upscale neighborhoods - the crowd is too 'proper' to show enthusiasm.

People have even been known to throw money at the screen during 'item numbers' when a hot chick in a skimpy outfit dances to a hit song (Movie OST's and music videos in India are released before the film, to drum up interest. People go to the movie to 'see' a good song on the big screen, even if they've seen it on TV).

[–]citrus2644 -2 points-1 points ago

I have an burning sense of dislike toward people that applaud a movie at a large theater. if you are at a test screening and the director and some of the actors as well as other people involved in the production are most likely in attendance, I completely understand showing your appreciation for the film by applauding. But, if you are at your regular theater, then there is no point

[–]willy277 -1 points0 points ago

The only time I've experienced this was in California so i figured it was just some weird tradition of the wackos that live there.

[–]altoid2k4 -1 points0 points ago

Unless it's a premier and people involved with the movie are there, who the fuck are you clapping for?

[–]axclover -1 points0 points ago

"What I look like when everyone claps at the end of a movie" *** unless you mean... How I look around at the fools at the end of a movie when they clap?

[–]lalondtm -4 points-3 points ago

Some super nerd in iron man PJ pants clapped at the end of Avengers today. I called him an idiot

[–]klw17 2 points3 points ago

wegotabadass.jpg

[–]ayandrew -1 points0 points ago

This bothers me too as clapping by itself is a universal way for a group of humans to express to performers that they are pleased. There are no live performers in a movie so why would I clap? I know from the laughing and "oohs" and "ahhs" that people were collectively enjoying the experience, I feel like the clapping is just misguided. What really bothers me though is people clapping for trailers. Every. Single. Trailer. before the Avengers got cheers and claps. Nobody knows if those movies will be any good, and with Hollywood's recent track record most of them probably won't be. I see no difference in cheering for a commercial on TV that you like.
