My scalp feels like it's crawling with a thousand tiny insects.

[–]C_M_O_TDibbler 14 points15 points ago

It is......

[–]nix-xon 4 points5 points ago

You have seriously gotta stop trying to sell me those sausages, dude. I had really nasty food poisoning last time I bought one.

...and a desire to eat more of them...

[–]Elvvood 1 point2 points ago

I see what you did there

[–]katmaniac 18 points19 points ago

I thought I saw a picture of that dog before. It took me a few seconds to realize these two were different dogs after re-finding the picture. http://i.imgur.com/H1EEw.jpg

[–]ResoL101 13 points14 points ago

Makes my soul sad.

[–]Tron-Gorf 4 points5 points ago

[Tick limit reached]

[–]religion_is_wat 2 points3 points ago

So what do you do to help a dog in a situation like that?

[–]justinsidebieber 2 points3 points ago

You throw poison powder at it.

[–]katmaniac 1 point2 points ago

From what I've seen, you use chemicals to kill the majority of the ticks. The chemicals don't usually get them all off, however, and the remaining ticks have to be physically removed with tweezers.

[–]mehtorite 110 points111 points ago

Strays have a hard life. If you don't spay or neuter your pet because "you wouldnt like not having balls" fuck you, dogs don't care about that shit. stop this from happening.

[–]DrEvyl666 50 points51 points ago

Yeah, I once had a woman tell me she thought that me spaying my female dog was "cruel" because "she'll never get to experience the joy of having babies". What the fucking fuck!

[–][deleted] 31 points32 points ago

There are a LOT of people who think like this. They think males will not feel "male enough" without balls and they think that animals have the same awareness and desire to parent that we do. Or they "think they'll be great mothers" or they want "a mini version" of the dog they have now. People are just morons.

[–]zonaanoz 29 points30 points ago

Intact male dogs make much better guard dogs. Lots of responsible pet owners are able to keep sexually intact animals with no problem.

Irresponsible people neither control their pets reproductive behaviors nor sterilize their pets. The problem is irresponsible pet owners, not sterilization or its absence.

[–][deleted] 8 points9 points ago

I never said there weren't any reasons to keep an animal intact. Keeping them intact and breeding them for the reasons I said, however, is idiotic.

[–]Bob3333 -2 points-1 points ago

Intact male dogs make much better guard dogs.

What is it about neutered dogs that makes their guarding ability insufficient for your needs?

[–]SchwarzerRhobar 33 points34 points ago

Obviously they can't teabag defeated intruders.

[–]WorkSucks135 1 point2 points ago

Not sure if serious but here you go: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Testosterone

[–]Bob3333 0 points1 point ago

I read that whole article and it didn't even try to explain zonaanoz's guard dog requirements and why neutered dogs do not meet those specifications.

[–]WorkSucks135 0 points1 point ago

Ok well you're obviously trolling but I have nothing better to do so I'll break it down for you.

In mammals, testosterone is primarily secreted in the testicles of males

It is the principal male sex hormone and an anabolic steroid.

Testosterone can be used by an athlete in order to improve performance, but it is considered to be a form of doping in most sports.

testosterone plays a key role in the development of male reproductive tissues such as the testis and prostate as well as promoting secondary sexual characteristics such as increased muscle, bone mass, and the growth of body hair.[3] In addition, testosterone is essential for health and well-being

And last but not least, from the sub-article cited within the main one:

Testosterone is a steroid hormone from the androgen group, which is most linked to the prenatal and postnatal development of the male gender and physique, which in turn has been linked on average to more physical aggression in many species.

[–]Bob3333 0 points1 point ago

I'm not trolling. Nothing you have posted explains why a neutered dog doesn't go a good enough job as a guard dog. All you've done is provide links to demonstrate that testosterone plays a role in making mammals aggressive and possessed of increased muscle mass. Are you arguing that neutered dogs are so lacking in muscle strength and aggression that they cannot serve as guard dogs?

[–]WorkSucks135 0 points1 point ago

Are you arguing that neutered dogs are so lacking in muscle strength and aggression that they cannot serve as guard dogs?

No, no one said they can't be guard dogs. The initial assertion was "Intact male dogs make much better guard dogs." Are you arguing that more muscle mass and aggression would not make a guard dog better at guarding?

[–]z3m 2 points3 points ago

That's exactly why I get my animals spayed in the first place. That shits hurts. They don't need to go through that.

[–]Whomping_Willow 1 point2 points ago

Every female pet should be spayed if you aren't planning on having her breed.

Case and point, pyometra. The uterus can fill up with puss and then rupture.

[–]AnnieChrist 51 points52 points ago

i neuter everything because i think having balls would be incredibly annoying.

[–]mehtorite 24 points25 points ago

everything? i hope your boyfriends cool with that.

[–]ruinmaker 20 points21 points ago

With that username, the AnnieChrist's boyfriend may not be given a choice.

[–]nicoleisrad 4 points5 points ago

[–]mel2mdl 1 point2 points ago

Me too - and yes, my husband is fine with his vasectomy!

[–]ABDPaddington 11 points12 points ago

THIS. Animals don't pine for their lost sexuality. Dogs are just as happy with a doggie buscuit and a scritch under the chin.

[–]Seanjohn2800 5 points6 points ago

...was this caused by dog balls?

[–]Alex-Cross 2 points3 points ago

I don't get it. What is that? And how does neutering prevent it?

[–]metaljunkie 12 points13 points ago

I think mehtorite was saying neutering prevents animals from having babies, which end up not being strays, which end up not getting fucked up infections that would cause them to be put down

[–]jonelson80 6 points7 points ago

Those are ticks.

[–]tubcat 2 points3 points ago

Good chance the dog has picked up something with an infestation this thick. That's just ticks and not even counting possible worms or bacterial/fungal infections the dog might have.

[–][deleted] -1 points0 points ago

To be fair, some, male dogs and cats actually do experience trauma and slight depression from being neutered so much so that you can have artificial testes put in the now cosmetic scrotum. Strays have a hard life and people shouldn't let their pets get freaky and procreate without having lined up homes for them agreed. Don't get angry I'm mostly agreeing with you just stating that males do know that something isn't right when they wake up without their boys is all.

[–]mehtorite 0 points1 point ago

yeah, its best to get it done when they are pups. surgery is rougher on older animals in general.

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point ago

yeah basically, not sure why my comment is getting down voted it is doing nothing but offer more information on the topic and agreeing with you. =P such is reddit I guess.

[–]AcceptableLosses 13 points14 points ago

I've seen deer corpses in the wood straight drained from ticks. And I mean fucking covered with that - like the picture. This year's going to be especially bad, I've been pulling 10-15 off my dog every time we go for a walk since early March... Which is insane. (He's got Frontline+ but I'd rather not let the little fuckers bite into him if I can.)

[–]lexical_gap 14 points15 points ago

Preventic Collar by Verbac. Lasts for 3 months, paralyzes the ticks' mouth parts. With Frontline+, the ticks have to bite in order for it to work.

[–]ShawnSDavis 0 points1 point ago

I'm not a dog owner, but I feel like this should be posted to /r/hellothisisdog or wherever dog people on reddit go. Seems important enough, and we all want only happy puppies!

[–]niceworkthere 0 points1 point ago

There was a report last year about one effect of climate change in Canada: Ticks would previously die off when the weather got too cold each year, but now it remains too mild, which causes their population to soar. Moose have it especially bad.

[–]NiteShadeX2 22 points23 points ago

I imagine thats a stray, they tend to get like that quite often.

[–]ChelseaRC 28 points29 points ago

This is horrible. I hope that dog gets the care it deserves, and a loving home. No dog should ever have to go through this.

[–]headdownassup 8 points9 points ago

/r/aww made me feel better

[–]zottz 5 points6 points ago

Thank you for the unicorn chaser.

[–]mel2mdl 8 points9 points ago

I worked for vet in high school and saw a lot worse. We had a dog come in COVERED in ticks. We killed them, but the owner had to pull them out herself. She bought him back in the next day to have him 'put to sleep' because she didn't want to deal with it. (The doctor found a new home!) We also had a dead dog bought in with the tape covering the box completely black with fleas/ticks - NOT a stray, mind you. But nothing tops the Maggot Dawg...

[–]rebelcupcake 3 points4 points ago

What...what is the maggot dawg...

dammit now I have to know.

[–]mel2mdl 12 points13 points ago

We had a dog come in that had been left chained next to the house. He had sores along his back, face and nose. I had to wash him. When the hose would hit his back, the maggots boiled up and out. I still have nightmares. He was a chow mix. We had to shave him and pour an acid like substance in each hole to kill the maggots/eggs. He was the sweetest dog. He kept licking our hands as he was being treated. No infection, of course - the maggots ate the dead skins. The owners had left him with family when they left town. We saw him a few years later, happy and healthy. But as a 17 year old, it traumatized me. I can't even look at a maggot without gagging. (And, 20+ years later - I still have nightmares about giant maggots on my driveway...)

[–]rebelcupcake 2 points3 points ago

Oh god. Poor puppy!! D: well I guess it is a good thing it was maggots and not something else, since they cleaned out any flesh that died. Still, it's awful that he had to go through that. Poor thing....

[–]Reluctant_swimmer 1 point2 points ago

Oh God. We had a goose once that got attacked by a dog, the wounds got infected and there were three huge holes with tons of maggots on his rear end. Had to put him down. UGH I HATE BUGS

[–]ofd1197 49 points50 points ago

This really ticks me off.

[–]artooken 5 points6 points ago

I see what you did...

[–]noddwyd -1 points0 points ago

well at least someone gets it. I knew what it was instantly, used to be around cows all the time.

[–]rainboupanda -1 points0 points ago

are those ticks? holy damn.....

[–]roni_size_ 5 points6 points ago

I suppose there is really good chance this guy contracted Lyme disease. Poor guy.

[–][deleted] 5 points6 points ago

[–]obsidian_gargoyle 2 points3 points ago

What the heck did happen to it?!

[–]beardaddy 21 points22 points ago

Ticks... Lots and lots of ticks. Unless it's a freak accident, the owner of this dog should be taken out and shot.

[–]elebrin 5 points6 points ago

It is also possible that this dog was a stray that someone found, and is now taking pictures of. It may have never really had an owner.

[–]katd987 1 point2 points ago

where did u get this pic from? is he gonna be ok :(

[–]RNecromancer[S] 5 points6 points ago*

I'm afraid my house has ticks so I googled "tick infestation" to look for signs of one and that's what I saw.

Edit: Grammar and syntax

[–]spaceghost_one 11 points12 points ago

holy shit - if my house had a tick infestation I would burn it down.

[–]c_o_d_a 6 points7 points ago

TIL homes can become tick infested...

[–]C_M_O_TDibbler 3 points4 points ago

They can live in a carpet for ages my friend had a stray cat wander into his house while he was working on a car, a couple of days later he saw something moving in the carpet, he had to have the house fumigated as the carpet had hundreds in it

the cat had been in the house for approx 30 mins

[–]Scrubbs 2 points3 points ago

I can't stop staring at my carpet now. Thanks for that.

[–]fs337 4 points5 points ago

WOOD FLOORS, BITCH!!!

[–][deleted] 7 points8 points ago

WOOD FLOORS, BIRCH!!!

[–]screwthunder32 0 points1 point ago

This happened at my parents' house once. Engorged female tick dropped off of a dog under their bed, tick laid eggs, hundreds of ticks everywhere.

[–]AcceptableLosses 1 point2 points ago

... They'd probably live through it.

[–]Tasty_Unicorn_blood 2 points3 points ago

Having had tick bite fever, I can assure you that having a tick infestation is something to be avoided at all costs.

[–]panaz -1 points0 points ago

How is it alive? I figured with that many ticks it would have a shortage of blood and lyme disease.

[–]jasiones 9 points10 points ago

my blood temp rose about 10 degrees upon opening this link.

[–]remembername 0 points1 point ago

Mine too. I'd like to kick the owner in the head with my steel toed boots.

[–]C_M_O_TDibbler 14 points15 points ago

most likely a stray so you would have to kick air,

[–]remembername 23 points24 points ago

I'll kick that air good.

[–]oowcheewallawalla 2 points3 points ago

:(

[–]thevigg13 2 points3 points ago

So, how is that treated? Is there a special bath they can soak in to remove the ticks?

[–]C_M_O_TDibbler 5 points6 points ago

There is a special tool for removing them if it is only a couple, you can cover them in a grease (petroleum jelly works) and they will let go because they can't breathe through it

My Granddad was a farmer before he died and whenever he got one on him he would put a lit cigarette or a match near it and they would let go

You can't just yank them out because they bury there heads in the skin and just pulling them could leave the head in causing problems

[–]screwthunder32 1 point2 points ago

Sometimes agitating a tick like that, such as burning or alcohol, causes them to release more salivary secretions, which increases the risk of tick-borne diseases. They actually create a type of cement that helps them stick to their host, and pulling them out with tweezers is usually better. Sometimes the mouthparts break off if you're not careful, and can cause an abscess or secondary infection.

[–]purebishop 4 points5 points ago

Because people like the idea of having a dog more than the reality of taking care of one.

[–]cpennington 1 point2 points ago

Whoever allowed that to happen should fucking die. I'm seriously disgusted.

[–]shredderman22 1 point2 points ago

those. are. ticks.

[–]aazav 1 point2 points ago

Someone who just loves collecting ticks.

Ticks! They're the new Pokemon!

[–]TalonX1982 1 point2 points ago

Fucking ticks. I'm crawly now just seeing that. I sheared Christmas trees in prime tick season and I've had waves of those little bloodsucking bastards crawling on me. What's the worst part of them is feeling them scurry across your back or waistline...

[–][deleted] ago

[–]CoupledPerfect 1 point2 points ago

Sound like good people.

[–]ungolden_glitter 1 point2 points ago

Poor puppy! D:

My skin and scalp now feel like they're crawling with insects, and I have the strongest urge to check my cats for ticks and drown my carpets with the most powerful insecticide I can find. ಠ_ಠ

[–]Exedous 1 point2 points ago

I want to pull all those beans out.

[–]dragonmoony 1 point2 points ago

How could you not put something in the title to warn us ?

[–]norrbjorn 3 points4 points ago

a google image search for "tick infestation" makes my entire body itch in a rather unpleasant way.

[–][deleted] 1 point2 points ago

I'm having the same sensation just from the dog pic here.

[–]Utasora -1 points0 points ago

Why did I do that at 5 in the morning...

[–]ConservativePlatypus 0 points1 point ago

He may be on a different timezone, tiger.

[–]JayDee240 2 points3 points ago

That's horrible, but imagine all the tiny tick noises that he can hear.

[–]jenntotheferr 14 points15 points ago

I have a fear of ticks. A great fear of ticks. This comment... I can't even describe the mental pain it caused.

Tiny tick noises. Tiny tick noises.

Fuck, man.

[–]underdabridge 9 points10 points ago

SPOON?

[–]Jaybaybaybay 1 point2 points ago

now im gonna feel weird all day... please put nsfl next time

[–]drchaos2000 -1 points0 points ago

poor ticks.. so many got to share one dog. every tick should have its own dog

[–]omega_gimp 0 points1 point ago

I saw something incredibly similar to this on an episode of Animal Cops some months ago. It's appalling nonetheless, but if I recall correctly, the dogs actually belonged to some lazy neglectful asshole.

[–]Hidden_Gecko 0 points1 point ago

Poor little thing :(

When we first got a puppy, he managed to get a few ticks on his first adventure out in to the garden. Horrible disease carrying creatures that they are we were quite worried about Lymes disease and so on - luckily he was ok, and the local Vet said Lymes and other Vector borne diseases weren't common at all in our area.

Looking at the amount this poor guy is carrying though I wouldn't say it's unlikely they've not had some sort of lasting effect on him. Awful :(

[–]elint 0 points1 point ago

I completely agree with you! They should have euthanized the dog immediately. With this many ticks, the disease-vector for human-infection grows greatly. As my vet always says, if there are more than 5 ticks on the dog, your best option is to put the dog down. Otherwise, you increase the risk for tick-based infection of humans and other dogs 10-fold or more.

I commend you for standing up for dong-lovers everywhere.

EDIT: I meant dog-lovers. :(

[–]chirpychirp 0 points1 point ago

That's truly amazing. I've never seen an animal with that many ticks. What the fuck.

[–]Darwinnotgod 0 points1 point ago

omg thats the most fucked up thing i have seen in a long time! At first i thought they were tumours or something but upon closer look i have never seen that many ticks in one spot! eww

[–]z3m 0 points1 point ago

What is that?

[–]elint 0 points1 point ago

A shitload of ticks, attached to a dog's ear.

[–]z3m 0 points1 point ago

Dear fuck that is awful.

[–]DrDeadp00l 0 points1 point ago

Anyone down to issue double the hunter's licenses and cause the extinction of tics via crazy bio weapon based on mice? I highly doubt this will work but other than keeping deer population down what the hell do tics do?

[–]gumarx 0 points1 point ago

So you peaked my interest, and with a little googling I determined (at least in my opinion) that ticks have no redeeming value. Some birds eat them (but none rely on them), and they help cull weaker animals, but unlike a lot of other creepy bugs they're not really serving a strong purpose (eg if they went poof we wouldn't get run over with either dead bodies or other bugs or something).

[–]elint 1 point2 points ago

We should form a coalition to study the tick, and figure out how we can convince them to stop preying on helpless animals, and start preying on people who use "peaked" instead of "piqued".

[–]gumarx 0 points1 point ago

OMG! Please shoot me and put me out of my misery now.

[–]Gyrenes 0 points1 point ago

sad to see this

my dog once had this one egg-shaped infested tick on it's head, i don't know where my dog got that, it's hard to pull it out and it didn't simply washed out with dog shampoo, but it just went off one day :/

any way to eradicate such tick?

[–]metempirical 0 points1 point ago

You can purchase tick removers for much cheapness. Just a bit of plastic designed to let you pull them out without leaving any tick behind.

[–]TheHot 0 points1 point ago

omg just fucking cringed.

[–]DBH114 0 points1 point ago

I've seen much, much, much...much worse. Free roaming farm dogs in the Ozark Mountains. Completely coated in ticks of every size. From tiny ones to grape sized. All along their eyelids. The fur on their backs was all lumpy from them. It was nasty. But I gotta say the dogs never seemed to give a shit, when I saw them they were always running around having fun. Had to suck for them though.

[–]UnicornReality 0 points1 point ago

Sickening. My dog had a small tick on his ear just before and I was gutted that I hadn't noticed it earlier. How can they let that happen? Bastards.

[–]Expects 0 points1 point ago

I keep coming back to this picture with the overwhelming need to scrape all that off his ear, SOOOO BAAADD

[–]Pentaxia -1 points0 points ago

gonna find the guy who's responsible for this and shove a cactus so far up his ass he becomes a hedgehog

I'm still in fetal position...oh god O.O

[–]Thor_Odin_Son 0 points1 point ago

idk if it qualifies as trypophobia, but seeing that instantly made me feel like my scalp was crawling, tingly and what not, my face became really itchy too
