It's Khal Drogo D:

I think this is why Americans prefer football.

[–]TwoChe 64 points65 points ago

[–]czhang706 105 points106 points ago

Do you really want to compare the amount of flops between soccer/football and football/handegg?

[–]MarcBoudy7 9 points10 points ago

It's more of a culture thing as oppose to the actual sport. People associate diving or 'simulation' with soccer but when you look at how north americans, english, welsh, scottish, russian, german etc play, they dont dive. However when you look at players from italy, spain, portugal and most of south america, diving is quite prevalent. When you compare this to other sports like basketball, the biggest divers are from places like spain and argentina (Manu Ginobli.)

[–]Qurtys_Lyn 1 point2 points ago

As a Jazz fan, Damn Ginobli!

[–]Amun_Cooked 2 points3 points ago

A Jazz fan! you're like a unicorn, I must paint you!

[–]Qurtys_Lyn 2 points3 points ago

Since the days of Stockon and Malone. It kills me that Denver and the Lakers are playing each other. Can they both lose?

[–]TwoChe 63 points64 points ago

No, I really don't.

[–]caboose1234 19 points20 points ago

Good answer

Both are inferior to hockey in that regard, where flopping is a penalty.

[–]jabrodo 11 points12 points ago

where flopping is a penalty

Fuck off, diving/flopping is a penalty in all three sports. it is just tolerated or not seen as much in soccer. Players in all sports that have tripping fouls have players that try to cheat by flopping, it part of the nature of the sport.

[–]ParksVS 2 points3 points ago

It's a lot more fun to do in hockey though. Weeeeee

[–]MrCarbohydrate 11 points12 points ago*

Diving is an offence in football (soccer). It is bookable too.

[–]Vsx 9 points10 points ago

I believe flopping is a penalty in American soccer, MLS even fines based on replay verification. Probably is in other places as well (just not enforced well).

Random Rolling Klesla is my favorite thing.

EDIT: Derp. Kesler, not Klesla.

[–]ehr0c 1 point2 points ago

Kesler.

[–]flakthezipper 4 points5 points ago

Haha I love how Fujita just throws his hands up in the air like "Not sure what the fuck that was..."

[–]spacemanspiiff 6 points7 points ago

wtf was that yellow flag being thrown by the ref?

[–]ademu5 4 points5 points ago

uninformed observer here, ten years experience, it seemed like he was throwing it because he looked up, saw the guy falling on his back and the crowd's reaction and threw the flag assuming a foul. They would've watched the film and seen the ridikerousness of it all.

[–]ramen_feet 6 points7 points ago

yeah, that's definitely one of the good points of american football. I like how referees are allowed (and encouraged) to look at video playback to see what really happened. Don't know if that's what happened here, but could have.

[–]railroad-redditor 1 point2 points ago

Not really a direct comparison, because in the NFL referees are not allowed to look at replay footage regarding a penalty.

Penalties cannot be challenged by replay.

I say this assuming that a yellow-card is similar to a penalty.

[–]thelawgiver10 2 points3 points ago

Penalties are actually non-reviewable in American football.

[–]derekg1000 5 points6 points ago

I truly can not comprehend how you are being downvoted. penalties are not rewiewable unless they are a few specific ones, and this would not be one i think. The only things they review are objective things (in bounds or not, TD or not), not subjective like a penalty (did he really grab him enough to count as a hold?). The league might look at this eventually and give a fine to the offending player, but nothing would happen in game.

[–]thelawgiver10 2 points3 points ago

Because people get angry when they are wrong. Instead of saying, "Sorry, my bad," they downvote. (sigh) Reddit.

[–]thelawgiver10 2 points3 points ago

More importantly, why are people upvoting someone who simply says "You're wrong," without explanation or otherwise adding anything substantive to the conversation? To me, those sorts of comments are exactly what the downvote button is intended for.

[–]ramen_feet 3 points4 points ago

what! really? I thought refs are allowed to view replays, is that for something different? Man, now I feel dumb lol

[–]MightyYetGentle 3 points4 points ago

Thats blatantly incorrect

[–]derekg1000 3 points4 points ago

do you even watch american football? if you did you would know just how completely wrong you are. Penalties ARE NOT REVIEWABLE unless it is a very small set of things. 12 men on the field or pass interference if the ball was believed to have been tipped by a defender are penalties that can be reviewed, not much else can. Review only applies to objective things, not subjective.

[–]thelawgiver10 3 points4 points ago

...no, it isn't. A select handful of penalties are reviewable (12 men on the field, for example), but any so-called "judgment call," like pass interference, holding, or a personal foul, is NOT reviewable.

[–]Plushgunner 9 points10 points ago

a penalty flag!

[–]The_Tic-Tac_Kid 2 points3 points ago

In American football a yellow flag is used to denote any type of penalty. (I don't follow soccer at all but I would imagine it's the same as an official showing a card except there's not different colors for different levels of offense) Since penalties committed while the ball is in play don't stop play the flag is weighted and thrown near the spot of the foul to mark where the foul occurs. This is significant because most penalties result in the ball being moved a set distance (depending on the the type and severity of the infraction) either towards the goal line or away depending on who committed the penalty. These distances are measured either from the line of scrimmage (where the ball was at the start of the play) or the spot of the foul depending on the type of foul.

In the video posted above the flag was thrown because #99 in white (Browns) pushed #89 in orange and black (Bengals) after the play had ended. #89 obviously flopped here, but honestly depending on how strictly the ref wanted to call the game, had he noticed the initial contact prior to the flop it probably could still be called. In either case the penalty would move the ball 15 yards towards the goal line and the offense would get a new set of downs.

[–]spacemanspiiff 1 point2 points ago

Thanks you!

[–]TwoChe 2 points3 points ago

I want to answer your question but I need to know if you are asking why he threw any flag or why he threw that flag?

If a player commits an infraction the ref throws a yellow flag to indicate there is a penalty on the play.

That flag was thrown because the ref was manipulated into thinking unsportsmanlike conduct had occurred. That is a 15 yard (about 15 meters) penalty. It is a pretty major penalty as you only need to get 10 yards for a new set of downs (attempts) to gain 10 yards. (An offense keeps getting downs until it can't gain 10 yards, it scores or loses possession of the ball) So on the offense it more doubles how far they have to go, likely stopping their offensive possession. And for the defense it gives the offense a free first down and a large chunk of land closer to the goalline.

[–]All-American-Bot 11 points12 points ago

(For our friends outside the USA... 15 yard -> 13.7 m) - Yeehaw!

[–]alreadytakenusername 8 points9 points ago

Non-Americans also prefer football, you know.

[–]RoscoeMG 6 points7 points ago

That was football.

[–]nomowolf 5 points6 points ago

this comment had me confused... oooh you mean american"football"(handegg), not football.

[–]violetjoker 3 points4 points ago

It's because Americans can't concentrate on a game that goes on for more than 3minutes without a little break.

[–]FatKilmer 27 points28 points ago

I saw an argument made by another Redditor that said the reasons we in the U.S. are more keen to American football, baseball, etc. instead of football/soccer is that even though when broken down they are just as "low scoring" as soccer (the average NFL team scored ~22 points/game last season, just a little over 3 actual touchdowns), there are "mini-achievements" along the way in terms of first downs. Even when a team doesn't score they still "accomplish" something. Plus, tension gradually builds as the team approaches the end zone.

Same with baseball. It's low scoring, but tension mounts as players get on base in an inning. Soccer has it's moments, say when a team has a break towards the goal or an actual shot takes place, but they're more fleeting.

I can't recall what he said for basketball's popularity, but I'd wager the speed/pace argument does apply there. Basketball can be extremely fast-paced, quick, and high flying. I also think that's why hockey is kind of in the middle of sports preferences among most American's as it sort of combines the back-and-forth pace of basketball, the physicality of football, but the "tension" of soccer, which some may not enjoy.

[–]stayunknown 88 points89 points ago

I personally think that Americans enjoy stat-driven sports. Think about it, all the popular sports are full of stats. baseball is all stats, football, basketball and hockey are full of stats too, and all the commentary is stat oriented.

Soccer has few stats in comparison, the most common being caps/appearances, shots, goals, assists, cards, and possession, and a few others. Commentators of soccer rarely talk about stats in comparison.

As a fan of most sports, talking about american sports is very stat based too amongst friends, whereas soccer is way more subjective in the discussion.

[–]Jobson15 58 points59 points ago

Hence why cricket is such a popular sport in the US.

[–][deleted] 71 points72 points ago

Are you kidding me? There are literally dozens of cricket fans in the US!

[–]haterr 12 points13 points ago

dozens...

[–]radioslave 2 points3 points ago

Indeed, there's dozens of us

[–]Leo-D 27 points28 points ago

We tried but the cricket bat just looked too much like a giant paddle to be taken seriously around here. It's like people were waiting for a giant to spank.

[–]willed1234 47 points48 points ago

Making fun of cricket, that's a paddling.

[–]standerd08 4 points5 points ago

Simpson's reference on your cakeday? That's a paddlin'.

[–][deleted] 2 points3 points ago

You better believe that's a paddlin'.

[–]willed1234 1 point2 points ago

You've got to know your audience.

[–]IMightBeFullOfShit 6 points7 points ago

I would watch cricket if I could ever find a match on TV. It seems like it would be very entertaining to watch. I mean, when is it appropriate to for the player to say things such as "pip pip cheerio!" And when do they use the shuttlecock?

[–]juggs86 2 points3 points ago

I still find it amazing how I can watch a game that goes for 5 days and not get bored

[–]Ethanol_Based_Life 11 points12 points ago

I think it's more about suspense driven. Every single down or pitch you have time to let your anticipation grow and imagine the possible scenarios.

[–]PerilousPancakes 7 points8 points ago

Agreed. I totally get and respect soccer, and I wouldn't ever say it is stupid or boring, but football and baseball seem to have a kind of chess-like strategy about them.

[–]Ellgar 1 point2 points ago

Can't stand watching soccer but its my favorite sport to play.

[–]derekg1000 1 point2 points ago

it doesnt just seem like there is chess-like strategy, there is! Pitch selection is based off of where you are in the count, play calling is generally determined by field position and current down with yards to go.

[–]WanderingStoner 4 points5 points ago

For me, soccer is so much more suspenseful than baseball/football, but that might be because I played soccer as a child through high school. For people who grew up in Little League and Pop Warner, I can understand why they would relate more to those sports.

[–][deleted] 2 points3 points ago

I think it is a different kind of suspense. Football/basketball have more of an increasing type of stress. Because it isn't super rare for comebacks to happen.

I feel the low scoring nature of soccer creates more stress through the whole match. Anytime the ball is near to the goal there is some stress which builds as a team gets closer to scoring/being scored upon.

I am not a huge soccer fan but I can appreciate it.

[–]buckX 5 points6 points ago

He didn't say all Americans. He said Americans. As a group, Americans have more interest in Football than Soccer. You can see that directly through viewership.

[–]winkandthegun 14 points15 points ago

it's true. if the world cup was going on in my backyard, i'd close the blinds.

[–]Madhadda 4 points5 points ago

[–]Diels_Alder 4 points5 points ago

If there's no breaks, when am I supposed to take a piss? Or get more beer?

[–]violetjoker 3 points4 points ago

You need to think more then 5min ahead.

[–]Diels_Alder 8 points9 points ago

A half is 45 minutes plus stoppage time. That's way too long to plan ahead.

[–]thelawgiver10 7 points8 points ago

American football is intensely strategic and coach-driven. Coaches work around 100 hours a week to watch film, dissect an opponent's schematic and personnel weaknesses, design plays to exploit those weaknesses and formulate a gameplan around those plays and their own team's strengths.

American football is an incredibly cerebral game, but critics like to ignore that point.

Suspended forever, until we say it's all good. 2 games later, it's all good.

[–]BrainTroubles 57 points58 points ago

To be fair, "indefinitely" does not mean "forever", it means "For an unspecified length of time."

[–]norse77 17 points18 points ago

It is like how "inflammable" does not mean "non-flammable." Found that out the hard way.

[–]stillalone 14 points15 points ago

Hi Dr. Nick!

[–][deleted] 7 points8 points ago

What a country!

[–]Franks2000inchTV 7 points8 points ago

Often it's used as a euphemism for "forever" but what it really means is "we'll decide later."

[–]drgk 3 points4 points ago

not definite

[–]FLOCKA 5 points6 points ago

bitch is crazy. can you imagine dating her?!

[–]lisabadcat 16 points17 points ago

Or getting a handie?

[–]zonaanoz 9 points10 points ago

I had seen that clip/gif before.

However I'd never noticed that the other girl grabs and pulls her shorts first. The hair-pulling was an over-the-top response to what's presumably prohibited behavior.

[–]ArchieBunkerWasRight 7 points8 points ago

Note that white shirt is grabbing her drawers in the crotch area just prior to the hair pull.

[–]snowlion13 1 point2 points ago

thats what i saw right away, i think the pull was a little over the top, but that girl was backing up and pinching her coochie

[–][deleted] 25 points26 points ago

I like how she straight up punched the girl in the back for elbowing her.

[–]Wallykahuna 19 points20 points ago

If someone played that dirty in a local men's league there would likely be a brawl. I found it odd that no one from BYU stood up to her.

[–]OG_Willikers 5 points6 points ago

Most of you are probably too yount to remember Danny Ainge. Played for the Celtics and was from BYU. I heard that he bit Tree Rollins after Rollins threw an elbow at him. Truth was that Tree bit Ainge. Check it out - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-VlM1h5vwyY

[–]Darth_Corleone 1 point2 points ago

Ainge with a NICE take-down of the big man... I thought Tree was gonna knock his block off and Danny shot the gap like an MMA pro!

[–]holyerthanthou 28 points29 points ago

"BYU"

Everyone probably 'forgave' her.

[–][deleted] 67 points68 points ago

No they didn't. They just talked bad about her behind her back.

[–]PapaPickles 16 points17 points ago

[–]Turn-n-Burn 8 points9 points ago*

I hate this. Let's all make assumptions based on some edited video. What isn't known is that the other team was doing the same shit to her, and did it first, she is just retaliating. Still wrong, but it isn't like she's some monster out there. That is the reason she was able to come back so soon. Someone actually looked at the whole game. http://www.cbsnews.com/8301-504083_162-5601480-504083.html

[–]HerpingtonDerpDerp 4 points5 points ago

Why did the girl in front of her squeeze her crotch? Is that what led to the hair pulling?

[–]snowlion13 1 point2 points ago

doesnt anyone notice that girl in the front pinching her coochie and backing all up on her? she was a little over the top but definatly wasnt the instigator

[–]thesorrow312 33 points34 points ago

Very nasty, I'd say. Dirty play, stuff happening when the ref isn't looking, yelling, cursing. And the cards. So many cards....

Until you realize you need to balance on blades 1/8th inch thick, while using a stick to control a puck, while 5 men are trying to kill you. When I was a kid I played as a fullback. Once, I kicked an opponent in the shin so hard he did a front flip and landed on his back. Another time, I went head to head with a player and busted open my eyebrow, which later had to be stitched up. We played in the rain and in temps below zero - with shinguards as our only protection.... and some FAAAAAABULOUS knee-high socks!!!

[–]TBHBP 3 points4 points ago

Theyre not effeminate - they all have sports cars, armani suits and a solid 10 on their arm. People call them pussys - they're not pussys - they're dicks because they're trying to get them sent off.

Also more dumb shit happens in 'soccer' because a lot more soccer is played, i mean like, 100x more than any other sport, i'd guess a lot more than 100x actually.

One dumb event from the Italian 3rd division and everyone conveniently forgets that nothing dumb happened in the other 1000 games that were played that day.

This is a really good point about the sheer volume of soccer games. I'd never thought of it in that context.

a solid 10 on their arm

What does this mean?

[–]Timmyp17 5 points6 points ago

It means having an amazingly beautiful woman on your arm ("she's a 10") to help cover up the homosexuality.

[–]AngloAlbion 1 point2 points ago

1-10 scale of attractiveness. A solid 10 being a supermodel who gives great head and doesn't fuck one of your team mates.

That's expert level hair pulling, right there. Just a simple yoink, and the chick is down.

[–]edgarvaldes 1 point2 points ago

That is why roman soldiers used the classic militar haircut.

[–]Nicolay77 1 point2 points ago

As explained in a Chucky movie.

Another front pager from POTATO_IN_MY_ANUS. How surprising...

[–]MeAndMyLlama 1 point2 points ago

Some very interesting contextual information...

Ah yes, this player is from my state. We are obviously highly educated and many of you cannot comprehend our intellectual ability.

I dated a female soccer player for a bit who played in a coed league. I went to a few of her games and noted that the ladies on the field were certainly not afraid to get in the thick of the fray and scrap it up. I remember seeing bruises and welts from where the ball would hit and where they'd collide with other players. They're some tough ladies. The hair pulling, of course, is just uncalled for.

I could fap to this.

[–]Nekokeki 1 point2 points ago

Really? This was posted less than a month ago and I'm a pretty new user. Two consecutive reposts, today sucks. At least it's soccer.

[–]JKirk21 1 point2 points ago

Potato in your anus... (?) I must say this is the best username I've seen so far.

[–]Incredditor 1 point2 points ago

Oh man! Is that Alex Morgan? Someone please confirm I cannot make out the name of the school or team.

[–]Xzumo 1 point2 points ago

FOOTBALL it's called FOOTBALL.

[–]eventually_i_will 1 point2 points ago

Man, I absolutely hated it when this happened. It set me off though, and got me to kick some ass when it happened to my teammates. There is a lot of dirty playing in women's soccer...

I even recall one coach, who I decided not to go with for this very reason... telling us about working on the timing of stepping on the other girls foot and jumping off, cleats into (her foot), to reach the header first. Boob punching - (because they already move, so you can hit the opponent and most people won't notice). Elbows directed to 'dead-arm' and 'dead-leg' someone. Ugh.

Well, I guess that is how it is played. :/

[–]Xvyrus 1 point2 points ago

I mean...bitch did try to grab her hang down, it was warranted

[–]HipHoppin 1 point2 points ago

Upvoted this because it was submitted by potato_in_my_anus

[–]SeparateCzechs 6 points7 points ago

I have seen this clip many times, and that is some severe hair yanking. But if some bitch was grabbing for my crotch(in quite a sneaky fashion) like the girl in white was doing to the girl in red, I might just break her neck with her own hair too.

edit well, I'd at least be tempted to do so.

[–]Nurga 4 points5 points ago

She's not trying to grab her crotch, she's keeping her checked off behind her so she knows where she is. As long as she's not impairing the other player's movement or holding her, it's not a foul.

[–]Punkgoblin 4 points5 points ago

I expected better from someone named POTATO_IN_MY_ANUS.

[–]DrCopeAndMrJack 1 point2 points ago

[–]Horrorshow7 7 points8 points ago

And now I'm horny.

[–]CanadianMooose 1 point2 points ago

I do believe that would justify a red card.
