These weren't mug shots. There were inmates already charged and asked to pose for the camera.

formatted link so people stop complaining

[–]dw1414 148 points149 points ago

[–]enginedriver 110 points111 points ago

I would not want to fuck with De Gracy. That dude is ice cold.

[–]Apollo_64 42 points43 points ago*

Agreed. Dalton looks like he'd sweet talk you into giving him money while De Gracy would just stare are you. With those dead eyes.

Edit: Just kidding. Skukerman is actually scarier than De Gracy

[–]blackbasset 1 point2 points ago

Well, now we know where David Lynch got his inspiration...

[–]NBAallstar 1 point2 points ago

[–]BroKing 8 points9 points ago

Dalton looks like the type of guy to be all "Mah, can't catch me copper! I'm Dueces Dalton, see! I'm a bona fide conman, see."

[–]tinycroissant 1 point2 points ago

Is it weird that I think some of these guys are totally handsome? Not Skukerman though...not him.... shudder

[–]ShotIntoOrbit 5 points6 points ago*

Holy shit. IdrA (Starcraft) is the spitting image of Skukerman.

[–]DriftedPlanet 1 point2 points ago

Silen Tom (12) reminds me of owen wilson.

[–]fermatafantastique 2 points3 points ago

24's got the nose

[–][deleted] 1 point2 points ago

Skukerman looks like the real world version of Gollum, he does look more nasty than what he was imprisoned for.

[–]ATownStomp 1 point2 points ago

Walter Smith looks like he could strangle his way through a whole mess of unlucky sonsabitches.

[–]Rocketbird 1 point2 points ago

Ah Skukerman's not that bad, he just used his wits to con people out of their warehouse supplies. Once I read what he did he seemed way less creepy. =P

[–]Sheeple3 4 points5 points ago

How about #30 Herbert Ellis...throwing a missile? That's one bad motherfucker.

[–]AutoFailure 1 point2 points ago

Skukerman would fuck you up.

[–]ruready4thepenis 1 point2 points ago

Herbert Ellis ~ his convictions by then include ‘goods in custody, indecent langauge, stealing, eceiving and throwing a missile.

Throwing a fucking missile

[–][deleted] 1 point2 points ago

The guy looks like a freakin' lich or something. What's wrong with his eyes?

[–]ATownStomp 1 point2 points ago

Seriously. that guy looks like the got damn devil.

[–]CommentArtist 31 points32 points ago

For anyone looking at the above link check out Eugenia Falleni and read the synopsis.

Then go here and read Eugenia Falleni's synopsis.

You won't be disappointed.

[–][deleted] 6 points7 points ago

Kathleen Ward is pretty funny too, her mugshot look demonic thanks to her "eye-fluttering"

[–]botnut 4 points5 points ago

Thanks for the link, I had to read the Falleni synopsis twice to get it.

[–]BinaryBrain 2 points3 points ago

A flattering time period for male criminals... not so much for the females. x.x

[–]ATownStomp 1 point2 points ago

They set the bar for prostitutes much lower back then it would seem.

[–]FlexOutlaw 15 points16 points ago

Thanks for the link. I found the female mug shots linked to at the end even more interesting. The descriptions of the crimes were better.

[–]victore992 4 points5 points ago

All the descriptions of women who preformed illegal abortions has me wincing.

[–]infrikinfix 1 point2 points ago

It's interesting that the sentences, when mentioned, were almost all 6 months...which seems excessive for the shoplifters and light for the murders.

[–]hoonmaster 10 points11 points ago

4 is a woman

wat

[–]JohnnyGilbert 3 points4 points ago

Here is a set of mugshots of women linked at the bottom of the page. It's crazy how much more haggard they look than the men.

[–]toocreative 1 point2 points ago

  1. Sydney Skukerman, wouldnt fuck with him either. Dude looks like he eats people

[–][deleted] 1 point2 points ago

forgot how gorgeous large format photography could be with proper lighting. Looks like huge flash pans were set up for all of those. You can see how in one a person is blurred in the background but the subjects are sharp, i think this is because a flash was used to freeze the subjects and the exposure left long to burn in the rest of the scene.

Awesome photography, looks leagues better than a lot of the stuff I see today, such amazing depth in the faces.

[–][deleted] 301 points302 points ago

Thank you...if this were a real mugshot, the guy taking the picture should have been fired. The hat completely obscures the criminal's face, making it pretty much useless as an actual record of their identity.

[–]kasperhej 99 points100 points ago

Well, assuming he wore the hat rather often, a picture of him wearing the hat would probably have been a good supplement to the mugshot collection.

[–]wellactuallyhmm 97 points98 points ago

I think in 1925 everyone wore hats rather often, so unless he was particularly attached to that hat or that style it might not help much.

[–]shnuffy 56 points57 points ago

It was the style at the time.

[–]papa-jones 52 points53 points ago

mumble mumble something about putting an onion in your belt..

[–]seluropnek 29 points30 points ago*

Gimme five bees for a quarter!

[–]kou5oku 12 points13 points ago

YES BRING BACK COOL MANco HATS.

[–]Radica1Faith 1 point2 points ago

[–]OjosAzules 14 points15 points ago

I wish this was the style of our time

[–]MeepZero 3 points4 points ago

I believe people also wore onions on their belts.

[–]jdlyndon 1 point2 points ago

Going out without a hat on back then was like going out without a shirt on these days.

[–]x3tripleace3x 9 points10 points ago

Well it showed his face quite clearly in the picture to the left, so I think it's a bit redundant to need to show his face twice.

[–]tphaoet 35 points36 points ago

I think it is helpful. You get an idea of what his height looks like, his build and his demeanor. I even like how on the left panel he's not looking into the camera. If someone showed me this I would be able to spot him far more easily than any other mug shot I've ever seen. What real mug shots show you can be easily changed by either dying ones hair or getting a haircut, and can be obscured too, with makeup or glasses.

His gaze and his stance are much harder to conceal though.

I think that these sort of portraits should supplement ordinary mug shots - which should be kept on for internal records.

[–]menomenaa 8 points9 points ago

Going along with this logic, though, no criminal would act like themselves in this "version" of a mugshot. We now know the criminal willingly posed for this picture and is therefore being himself, but if this were the mugshot? I imagine no one would suddenly get comfortable and pose like that. They'd be awkward, nervous and bitter about the picture being taken (generally--I know some would have different emotions) and probably would not hold themselves the same way they do when walking down the street.

[–]Dirty-DjAngo 2 points3 points ago

Also he's throwing up some OG Blood gang sign, that'll probably help

[–]HyzerFlip 1 point2 points ago

I just realized that I could mirror image my current look and be entirely obscured in about an hour.

Shave my beard. Don't shave my head. Wear a hat, buy some contacts...

[–]satnightride 1 point2 points ago

My own kid didn't recognize me last time I shaved my beard off. So you may be on to something...

[–]TofuAttack 23 points24 points ago

You say that like it's the only picture he took. Move your eyes to the left.

[–]sandity 1 point2 points ago

At the time these were taken, eugenics was quite big in the world. There were several movements afoot to find a criminal "type" which would allow you to know who to watch/arrest/sterilize so they didn't breed.

Several police agencies were compiling stats to try to make this "criminal type" scientific, such as head and arm measurements and "unposed" photos like these in an attempt to find correlations between the accused.

[–]defected 6 points7 points ago

Operates with large quantities of faked opium and cocaine.

Fucker should get the chair! Worst kind of criminal...

[–]diggro 10 points11 points ago

So like http://www.reddit.com/r/malefashionadvice/ before it was mainstream?

[–]blixco 13 points14 points ago

The link you've posted calls them mug shots.

[–]weeksie 1 point2 points ago

Well yeah. Still, the interesting thing about all of that is nobody knew about those shots for ages. They were the pet project of the guy who was in charge of the mugshots and when he retired it just so happened that they found massive boxes of these photos. At least that's how I remember it from the City Of Shadows exhibit at the Sydney police museum in '06 or so. They're amazing photos, all of them and there's a coffee table book, also called City of Shadows that I believe the museum sells.

[–]Should_Not_Comment 171 points172 points ago

Here's a classy mugshot from 60 years before that one:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:Lewis_Payne.jpg

One of the conspirators in Lincoln's assassination.

[–]oh_the_humidity 213 points214 points ago

fans self

[–]piratepixie 85 points86 points ago

I'm glad i'm not the only one who thought he was rather pretty.

[–]oh_the_humidity 106 points107 points ago

I would let him conspire to assassinate me any day.

[–]Kaiosama 28 points29 points ago

Maybe if he were around today he'd be an actor rather than a criminal :)

[–]sidepart 42 points43 points ago

Based on what I know about John Wilkes Booth, it's quite possible that this guy was an actor.

[–]stfuyouarefullofshit 31 points32 points ago

Or a hand model.

[–]piratepixie 10 points11 points ago

He kind of looks like a Ken doll.

[–]NonSequiturEdit 30 points31 points ago

He's the RPG of 1865.

[–]Rimbon 1 point2 points ago

Assassin of LOVE

[–]humblerodent 16 points17 points ago

I thought it was the humidity.

[–]aktsukikeeper 1 point2 points ago

Damn, it looks like it belongs to commercials plastered along fashion streets.

[–]Frostfoot 17 points18 points ago

SO REAL. SO FIERCE.

[–]avoidingmykids 1 point2 points ago

Something about him being long dead and evil turns me on more.

[–]NCSUspoon 1 point2 points ago

Well you're probably warmer from the humidity.

[–]chaoskitty 1 point2 points ago

You're definitely not the only one. It wasn't until Reddit came along that I could let my freak flag fly without judgement. Ohh, Mr. Paine--you could conspire with me as long as you want!

[–]ogcm 1 point2 points ago

Are you hot because of the humidity?

[–]Cybertrash 54 points55 points ago

I'm amazed how incredibly sharp these photos are, considering they're taken on glass plate negatives, which have an extremely slow emulsion.

[–]jasontimmur 26 points27 points ago

YOU HAVE AN EXTREMELY SLOW EMULSION

[–]smactosh 1 point2 points ago

Now calm down Skeeter, he ain't hurtin' no one.

[–]b1rd 22 points23 points ago*

Check out shorpy.com. Mind will be blown by some of that shit. You can see inside apartment windows on wide shots of city streets. It's amazing how much detail was captured on glass negatives.

Edit: it's shorpy not shorpys, my bad.

[–]sgtcolostomy 19 points20 points ago

I think you meant shorpy.com.

[–]b1rd 1 point2 points ago

I did, thank you.

[–]sgtcolostomy 2 points3 points ago

Cool site, by the way.

[–]JohnstownFlood 2 points3 points ago

Another fun resource is your local museum. Many have examples of the early stuff...daguereotypes, collodion, albumen. The dag's in particular essentially never run out of resolution...take a microscope to them and it's still sharp.

[–]Fartmatic 1 point2 points ago

Thanks, just had a look at a few pics and I think I'm about to get sucked into that for a while...

[–]matchewfitz 1 point2 points ago

True, but provided everything holds still you've got a great grain level.

[–]Kaiosama 15 points16 points ago

This looks like it could almost pass for a contemporary artistic shot.

[–]thedeejus 11 points12 points ago

I always thought that looked like an A&F ad

[–]giraffricanamerican 10 points11 points ago

Jude Law?

[–]hester_prim 3 points4 points ago

Y'all, get some.

[–]MathewC 6 points7 points ago

Don't say I never gave ya nuthin: http://www.loc.gov/pictures/search/?q=lewis%20payne

[–]AE1360 1 point2 points ago

Isn't that the guy from Green Street Hooligans? You know, that hobbit guy.

[–]clarkee 4 points5 points ago

2 for flinching!

[–]purpleOranges 1 point2 points ago

I feel I've got one coming my way too.

[–]GrooGrux 1 point2 points ago

In my version of the game you have sit down where ever you are, I was already sitting, so I counted it!

[–]chauchat 84 points85 points ago

I just occurred to me he might very well be holding his dick...

[–]homeboy5925 18 points19 points ago

darren sharper?

[–]toocreative 4 points5 points ago

Hold mah diiiiiiiiiiick

[–]theholotrope 18 points19 points ago

He IS holding it very well.

[–]westhe 17 points18 points ago

[–]jimbo91987 1 point2 points ago

Wow, most if them pose like models, like they are proud to be getting their picture Aiken, even if it is a mug shot

[–]somekindofcat 15 points16 points ago

This has always been my favourite. Lewis Paine on death row in 1865. He was one of the four people hanged for the Lincoln assassination. Wet plate photograph by Alexander Gardner.

[–]ailee43 1 point2 points ago

looks like it could have been taken last week...

[–][deleted] 12 points13 points ago

When Bertillon first invented mugshots and they started being used, the camera wasn't a widespread invention. So a lot of criminals were terrified that it was stealing part of their soul or something equally scary. They had to be physically forced to stay still for the mugshots: http://publishing.cdlib.org/ucpressebooks/data/13030/6b/ft296nb16b/figures/ft296nb16b_00049.jpg

[–]evrtgurnot 197 points198 points ago

Daniel Craig??!

[–]n0rs3n0rdic 94 points95 points ago

you blind? that's ralph fiennes

[–]Avohaj 33 points34 points ago

Talking about being blind, it clearly reads William Stanley Moore

[–]jayrady 19 points20 points ago

Wait. Thats Michael Moore?

[–]TSmaniac 13 points14 points ago

Michael Moore is a criminal?

[–]whatthefuckisareddit 23 points24 points ago

Well, he clearly hates America.

[–]ultimate_zigzag 11 points12 points ago*

That's because he's a liberal communist terrorist muslim.

[–]dsbdsm 5 points6 points ago

AKA Australian.

[–]r_HOWTONOTGIVEAFUCK 9 points10 points ago

AKA marsupial.

[–]Solomaxwell6 5 points6 points ago

He's really let himself go over the past 87 years.

[–]splooshy 2 points3 points ago

No, Cirían Hinds.

[–]mycatiskai 1 point2 points ago

It is clearly René Auberjonois in his younger days.

[–]DiegoTheGnome 8 points9 points ago

Welp, add him to the list. Keanu Reeves, Nicholas Cage, now Daniel Craig. All vampires.

[–]thai_quan_doh 28 points29 points ago

Yeah, what the hell is Daniel Craig doing in 1925?

[–]intothecold 42 points43 points ago

He's in everything these days.

[–]helicalhell 27 points28 points ago

those days

[–]cptnteneal 5 points6 points ago

being old

[–]datdouche 1 point2 points ago

Road to Perdition

[–][deleted] 7 points8 points ago

More details here, which describe William Stanley Moore as an 'Opium dealer./ Operates with large quantities of faked opium and cocaine./ A wharf labourer; associates with water front thieves and drug traders.'

[–]andy-roo 5 points6 points ago

Apparently in 1925 you could get arrested for being classy as fuck.

[–]rumckle 5 points6 points ago

The pic on the right looks like it should for an album cover or music mag.

[–]mistermajik2000[S] 13 points14 points ago

[–]kwh 1 point2 points ago

[–]Ozyman666 4 points5 points ago

[–]Flareburn 1 point2 points ago

Haha, this deserves more upvotes.

[–]armangua 10 points11 points ago

[–]magnolias 9 points10 points ago

Anthony Hopkins on the left.

[–]douff 5 points6 points ago

This photo is part of a series published in a book called "Crooks Like Us" - it's a collection of photos taken by police at lock-ups in Sydney. The aim of photographing these people in such a naturalistic way was to educate police officers and enable them to recognise these "crooks" when around town. The photos were only taken when "in the opinion of the arresting Officer the offender is liable to lapse into a life of vice and crime" ... Profiling people in a way. The book is a great photographic essay of Sydney's underbelly in the 1920's.

[–]Stranded_In_A_Desert 21 points22 points ago

[–]GrooGrux 5 points6 points ago

He has been getting people for 87 years! Smooth bastard!

[–]Stranded_In_A_Desert 4 points5 points ago

One might even say he's a smooth criminal.

[–]GrooGrux 2 points3 points ago

True, he is white and dead.

Edit: I love MJ, but I couldn't resist the joke opportunity.

[–]Soleft 18 points19 points ago

Fuck he got me, (the circle/finger game).

[–]relatively_sane 1 point2 points ago

Me too buddy. Me too.

[–]jokes_on_you 25 points26 points ago

Why the hell would they take a photo with his face obscured?

[–]greenpixel 18 points19 points ago

A collection of these "special photographs" from that site here.

[–]Beakerbite 14 points15 points ago

You do realize that you have just doomed their site.

[–]bobbyllama 1 point2 points ago

40 minutes later and it's taking forever to connect.

[–]HokieGeek 1 point2 points ago

This is a fantastic picture!

[–]pencapchew_3 9 points10 points ago

This is incredible. I like this one: http://collection.hht.net.au/images_linked/31178/019.jpg.

The eyes of the gentleman on the left are absolutely haunting.

[–]jokes_on_you 7 points8 points ago

Wow, thanks a lot for that!

[–]Theothor 9 points10 points ago

Kind of makes sense. If you are looking for him, that is how he would normally look.

[–]ScottFree37 8 points9 points ago

So did gangsters

[–][deleted] 1 point2 points ago

No, I'm pretty sure they were still pieces of shit, but yes, they did dress better.

[–]LeCasualRage 7 points8 points ago

If I might add that he is a ..... smooth criminal.

[–]condescending_tone 4 points5 points ago

Its like Daniel Craig and Ralph Fiennes made a time travelling baby.

[–]CrookedNaysayer 2 points3 points ago

That second pic is very Freddy Krueger-esque

[–]Not_A_Smartphone 2 points3 points ago

I didn't know Daniel Craig's grandpa was a convict.

[–]GunaSteve 6 points7 points ago

These are Aussie crims if i'm not much mistaken.

[–]yesukai 7 points8 points ago

But you repeat yourself.

[–]Audrion 5 points6 points ago

My camera from the year 2012 cannot nearly take as good of pictures wtf Canon

[–]blokeski 2 points3 points ago

I thought he looked a bit like Normal Wisdom.

[–]jcornelius84 2 points3 points ago

What kind of camera do you think was used here? Film? Lenses? Looks like a large format camera, but what kind of film, lenses? So beautiful, would love to replicate something like this.

[–][deleted] 1 point2 points ago*

Definitely large format camera. Probably 4x5 or even 8x10 glass plate negatives. Most likely Petzval lenses.

No idea about the lighting but I would guess they used natural light only.

I love this kind of photos. Every time I see one like this and remind myself of my DSLR's quality, it makes me depressed.

You can check www.shorpy.com out for more photos like this.

[–]zoso4evr 2 points3 points ago

Reddit are you okay? Are you ok Reddit? We've been hit by a smooth criminal.

[–]LincolnHox 2 points3 points ago

People just dressed better from 1925-1965.

[–]RollingGoron 2 points3 points ago

Is there anything from the 20s that isn't awesome?

[–]ndaly87 2 points3 points ago

fuck i looked at his hand...dammit

[–]ChrisHardwick 4 points5 points ago

The 1920s were rough. That guy is actually 17 years old.

[–]Emmarh23 5 points6 points ago

Thought I'd add a splash of colour to his smug face http://i.imgur.com/y2vdI.jpg

[–]pminkin 1 point2 points ago

Stanley "The Ears" William

[–]pizzaking00 1 point2 points ago

Must have been before the music industry conspired to overflow the prisons with rap music.

[–]alltimeisrelative 1 point2 points ago

Well, it's more the fact that in 1925 everyone was classy because everyone wore these kind of clothes. Not that mugshots we're classy.

[–]fitzy179 1 point2 points ago

Note: Get arrested in the 1920s for a nice photo of self.

[–]gregm1 1 point2 points ago

That's one classy criminal.

[–]thelightforest 1 point2 points ago

bein' so swag it's criminal.

[–]jjr23 1 point2 points ago

Daniel Craig you sonofabitch.

[–]Ninjasteevo 1 point2 points ago

Shit, I looked. Well played good sir, well played....

[–]plantfan7 1 point2 points ago

Looks like if Daniel Craig figured out how to time travel when he turned 65 and ended up in the classiest prison ever.

[–]Zementid 1 point2 points ago

Stop it! Hipsters will exploit the shit out of the gentleman style!

[–]THE_BOKEH_BLOKE 1 point2 points ago

[–]craxkheadjenkins 1 point2 points ago

Smooth criminal

[–]mutter34 1 point2 points ago

Reddit has no idea what class is. One does not simply have class.

[–]numlok 1 point2 points ago

Here's another classy one from around the same time period.

That said, I believe there were still classy mugshots being taken up until 1976.

[–]XTempor 1 point2 points ago

That is Daniel Craig in 15 years.

[–]KobeGriffin 1 point2 points ago

Ah, back when people wore clothes that fit them.

[–]reagan2016 1 point2 points ago

Is he holding his cock with the hand in his pocket?

[–]4797161974806 1 point2 points ago

Read that in my mind as, "Mugshots used to be classy, now they're just criminal,".

[–]Emmanuell89 1 point2 points ago

i'll never be that cool

[–]ussoldier239 1 point2 points ago

This guy reminds me of This guy

[–]mintzmee 1 point2 points ago

Im pretty sure hes playing pocket pool with himself...

[–]snakeeyes072 1 point2 points ago

Now this is a classy mugshot.

[–]ConansBeard 1 point2 points ago

I think I may be related to Ernest Joseph Coffey, was scrolling through and thought saw a guy that looks just like my uncle, look at the name and this guy quite possibly can be a great or great great granddad of mine.
