Some guys are just pathetic and never learn for some reason. I have a friend like that. Broke up, stayed "friends" for 3 years while she got Bf's, got knocked up, got an abortion, all the while sharing every detail with my friend and every day he would call her to see if she wanted to hang out. For three years he was a shell of a man doing everything for her even driving to a different country to pick her up from the airport. None of us knew why he kept doing this to himself until i realized some men are bitches and will always be bitches no matter how much common sense is thrown at them. (3 years worth from very close and loving friends). He is currently in a similar "relationship" 6 months of doing everything for the girl and she hasn't even kissed him... he justifies it somehow by saying he likes being around her and that's what matters. I don't know how to upvote you 20 times, so I'll try and elaborate as to why you are completely correct.

This Jon guy sounds a lot like Albert P Pussypants.

First off, anyone who fails his midterms because he's sad over a girl is an idiot. It's not romantic or heartwarming that this guy is so co-dependent he possibly ruined his college years over a break up. If fact, that's probably why she broke up with him. Image going out with someone that constantly tries to cater to your every whim. Guys, for you this would be a girl that comes over everyday, never leaves you alone, never challenges you, never disagrees with you. There could obviously be something wrong, but she'd never say anything because she loves you so much she doesn't want to bother you.

If Jon is reading this, he and this fictional girl I just created are the romantic equivalents of bean-bag chairs. Kinda of comfortable and nice at first. They morph to your shape and you can move them around wherever, even shoving them up against other chairs and they don't mind. But they never give any resistance, there's no strength to them. Occasionally you need a rigid chair to force your posture upright (and that's where this metaphor starts to get ridiculous).

Relationships demand that you challenge the other person. They are constant give and take which must eventually meet in the middle or it fails. I couldn't imagine dating someone as passive and limp as Jon. This post was probably the best thing Jon ever did for Shera. He finally called her on her shit and tried to demand something. Too bad he still managed to be passive and annoying.

This hits close to home. I met my first serious girlfriend in college. We dated for almost 4 years (she broke up with me the day before our 4 year anniversary). I was pretty angry, then sad, then said "fuck this shit!" I went out and did whatever I wanted whenever I wanted. I was pretty self-destructive and did some stupid shit (mostly involving a shit-ton of alcohol), but also did some pretty awesome shit. I ended up talking to her a year later and found out that she hadn't changed one bit in that year. I had changed and grown so much, and she stayed the same.

Moral of the story is this: Getting dumped by your first long-term partner sucks, but don't let it keep consume you. Look at it as a chance to grow and change. Also, make sure you have some good friends around to help you out. My friends really kept me positive.
