Having taken a total of 8 days away from work in the past 12 months (and I'm talking working 60+ hrs/week seven days a week otherwise) I totally agree.

As much as I enjoy my working as a scientist, this is getting insane. I shouldn't resent being in the lab. It doesn't pay well enough to be like a normal job.

Not always, i'm hourly and Saturday shifts are normal pay. If we work on a Sunday we get an extra $0.20 an hour, which on a typical Sunday shift for us, is an extra $1.

I work for a large chain of Coffee shops here in the UK (Caffe Nero). I get 2p over minimum wage (6.10). I get no extra pay for weekends. No extra pay for working on holidays. No extra pay for overtime. And the only day they ever shut is Christmas Day. Christmas Eve? Boxing day? Same pay. Fucking shit job.

      I guess it depends on what you do for a living. When my boss asks if I want to work on Saturday, I'm thinking, "Time and a half? For free? YESSS!!!" They've never asked for more than a few hours, so I still get the rest of the day. However, I used to be a server in a restaurant, and I sympathize with this 100%.

      Depends on the shift. A lot of places have most of their staff in on a Saturday evening anyway, but sometimes they'd ask the night before to do a double and come in the next morning to open. Not fun.

      I liked it. I was also expecting an awesome and cool shoot 'em up movie, and that's exactly what I got.

      It's like those assholes who hate on Tranformers. Fuck those guys. The trailers advertised boobs and explosions, so what the fuck were they expecting? I expected, I came, I saw, I enjoyed. When a movie is made out to what it aimed for, then it's a good movie in my book.

      You know what? Fuck that. Transformers sucked because it wasn't a brain dead shoot em up action movie that was just created out of thin air, it was based upon a cartoon series that actually followed a plot line, character arcs and recognizable villains / heroes. Many of us older people, bought the toys, and used our imagination to play out different scenarios, battles, and scenes in our heads. To see it put up on the big screen with shitty jump cuts, dizzying action sequences that made no sense, wooden acting and gratuitous explosions that had no point - it kicked us in the childhood and pissed us off. Did we expect too much? Did we somehow think that when the announcement of a Transformers movie was made that we would be so dramatically disappointed? You might have showed up and enjoyed a vapid, shallow shoot em up action flick, but we saw the rape of all our childhood daydreams, and Michael Bay tainted a time in our life that we were once very happy with.

      Oh, and since we're on a similar topic, fuck George Lucas. Just because.

      When it came to random action, (as much as I hate to say it) Wanted was far better, Transformers came across as incoherent, and Shia.

      I hate Wanted because nearly every cool action scene relied on something physically impossible, not that it's a bad thing in all cases, but in Wanted I found it hard to suspend disbelief.

      Well, I prefer my flicks with a modicum of coherent story. No need to have no faith in the intelligence of a viewer, even if it's an action movie.

      And nothing legitimizes the amount of braindeadness that is the Transformers somethinglogy.

      I'm not being protective, it's just that I don't really enjoy the thought process that every movie has to aim for good material. Some movies, like Wanted, aimed for your standard action movie that you can enjoy with friends. There is even curving bullets. I watched an HBO Look for Iron Man 2, and the director said something along the lines of this, "We're not making a movie for the Oscars, we're making a movie for everyone to have a good time watching. Nothing more than that."

      I thought Wanted was really well done for such a movie. I had never heard of the comic until someone told me, I had no preconceived notions other than "this might be a cool movie", and it delivered. Regardless of how outlandish it was, I knew it wasn't going to be based on reality, and the story was interesting and put together nicely.

      It certainly didn't have the most unbelievable story I had liked in a movie before.

      I don't watch every movie expecting another Shawshank Redemption, and no matter how much I love and appreciate great flicks like that I think I would honestly die of boredom if I had to watch Amelie over and over again (even though I've seen it a dozen times and love introducing it to people).

      I don't know any salaried people working standard hours or days anymore. There's work to do, you do it wherever and whenever needed. If you want to advance you do more than asked. If you want to be the best in your field you live and breathe it, trying not to ruin your life in the process. Take a day here and there, try not to lose the connection with your loved ones, try hard to take your vacation time. Outside of that, you are working.

      I just love the work I'm currently doing. Have been working at least a couple of hours almost every weekend this year. The day before May day I didn't get to the party until 1 AM since i got lost in work until 12.

      And the weather has been great for the last couple of days, so I've cut a couple of days short to roll around on my porch in the sun, so I guess I'll work this weekend as well. Maybe outside, in the sun.
