I need experience to get a job, I need a job to have experience. Apparently I'm " not qualified enough" according to the owner of an Olive Garden to bring plates of food to a table

[–][deleted] 19 points20 points ago*

Try this:

Sign up for at least five temp agencies. Call them every weekday morning, all five or more of them, shortly after they open to see if they have anything for you that day.

If you get any temp assignment, treat it like a job interview, even if it's only for a day. At worst, you will get a day's pay out of it. If you're luckier, you'll get a job lead or a reference that you can use the next time you put in an application. If you work a lot of short temps like this you can end up with a lot of good recommendations. And if you work a lot of temps doing the same general kind of work, you end up with a breadth of experience that will look good on your resume. ASK IF IT'S OK TO USE THEM AS A REFERENCE. GET CONTACT INFORMATION IF THEY SAY YES.

A lot of places hire large numbers of temps for long-term assignments, then watch to see who is worth keeping. Generally a bit more than half are sent back, and they hire the rest full-time. It's not a hard cut to make; just do the basics...show up on time, EVERY day, stay busy even when you think nobody is watching, stay out of interpersonal conflicts, and learn as much new stuff as they are willing to teach you.

And in the meantime, use all of the internet job boards...monster.com, indeed.com, careerbuilder, anything your state offers...and try Craigslist. Craigslist will get you jobs (or temps) largely with small businesses without much room for promotion, but it's experience, a potential reference, and money coming in.

Doing the above got me through two years of unemployment and eventually got me hired. I never had to use unemployment insurance.

[–]ratking11[!] 1 point2 points ago

I've been at my current job for 8 years. Got it through a temp agency. Temp agencies work, and in an economy like this, it's easier to get temp help than to actually hire.

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point ago

Employers are using temps more because the economy is up and they need people, but they are uncertain if things will stay that way and they don't want to end up doing layoffs. With temps, you just tell them that their temp is completed and throw 'em back, and it doesn't affect the morale of their full-time permanent hires.

It also gives them a chance to evaluate potential employees in a way that no job interview ever could...they can actually see them on the job for an extended period.

[–]FeedtheFaust 0 points1 point ago

Yeah I had a job that was only supposed to last a couple of weeks last me a whole year.

[–]mbop 0 points1 point ago

My first job wasn't through the temp agency, but it was supposed to be a summer job that would only last three months. They ended up liking me a lot so they kept me working full time. If you do get a chance to work for someone, do your fucking best. Even if it's just a day. Treat it like you want to work (as you should). Using them as a reference will be even more powerful when they actually recommend you.

This guy... Tag him as "Jobland".

[–]bearskinz 2 points3 points ago

being a waiter is more of an honor than you would ever think. gotta start bussing tables or washing dishes before you get to do that.

[–]MutatingNeutrinos 1 point2 points ago

Waiting tables is actually difficult and requires a fair amount of work and experience. This comment pretty much confirms you are not qualified.

[–][deleted] ago

[deleted]

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point ago

Get used to hearing "no". You will hear it a lot. Keep at it until you hear "yes".

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point ago

Here's another thought, if you are specifically after this type of job:

I have heard restaurant owners and chefs talk about the fact that nobody wants to learn the entire business from the ground up anymore, unless they're here from Mexico or points south and are willing to do anything to support their families back home.

So offer to start at the bottom. Let them know about the culinary school training, but tell them that your aim is to learn the entire business and that you are willing to pay your dues. Wash dishes and bus tables, but after awhile keep after them in order to learn more.

[–]emfh 0 points1 point ago

Waiting tables is hard and intense, and when people act like its some blow off easy gig I get upset. I'm a cook and you couldn't pay me enough to go to the front of the house. But if you want to wait tables, you have to start bussing tables to prove you can handle it.

[–]MF_Kitten 0 points1 point ago

Try getting a job as an assistant in health care. At an old people's home or something.

[–]its2012 3 points4 points ago

Spa? What is this word you're saying? Are you trying to say spaghetti? Are you taking me on a spaghetti day?

[–]Squatso 2 points3 points ago

Jobees*

Because it's supposed to be jobees instead of trees. You lepton.

[–]Tehatimmeh 5 points6 points ago

I just got a job offer today, after months of hunting. :D Ha, take that job gif.

[–]Lord_of_Womba 4 points5 points ago

Well I think the idea is that people tend to make light of getting a job as if you just walk outside and bam you're hired. The fact that it took you months of hunting proves how jobs are rare and hard to find, thus the point of the quote.

[–]ivenoideawhat 1 point2 points ago

Incorrect. People are lazy and picky. There are warehouses and factories all over the place that are willing to take anyone off the street with no experience.

[–]AzDraon 2 points3 points ago

This... this guy knows what's up. Jobs are out there and it is not hard to find the work. I applied to about 100-140 jobs in 1 months time. 4 weeks after I started I got about 1-2 calls each day.. I scheduled 7 interviews, went to 6 of them, so far I have been offered 1 of those 6, but those interviews were this and last week, so I expect to hear back with more offers.

[–]ivenoideawhat -1 points0 points ago

This doesn't really make any sense here.

[–]Tehatimmeh 0 points1 point ago

I honestly didn't even know that was an option until last week, when my friend told me she got a job at a factory. I'd been searching job postings online and bringing applications to any place that had a "help wanted" sign.

[–]Tehatimmeh 0 points1 point ago

Oh, I know. I'm just ridiculously relieved and happy right now. I agree with the gif, it seemed impossible. With only two and a half years of part time experience, no one wanted me.

[–]binocusecond 1 point2 points ago

Go you!

[–]AzDraon 1 point2 points ago

Me too! Only mine was after about 1-2 months of searching! God, it sure is hard finding a job.

I REALLY wish people would stop posting this.

[–]Jeterson 43 points44 points ago

Oh stop posting this? Just stop posting this? Why don't I strap on my post stopping helmet squeeze into my post stopping cannon and fire off into stopped posts land, where post stopping grows on poststoppies.

[–]Danez 1 point2 points ago

Go get a canvassing job. I swear to god, it is so shitty nobody wants it, you can get a job in 1 day. It sucks. It also pays like 9.50 an hour where I live.

[–]MutatingNeutrinos 1 point2 points ago

Its really not jobs that are in short supply. People just want jobs with 50k salaries and benefits and no manual labor.

[–]AlfieChapman 1 point2 points ago

Video?

[–]Calavera190 1 point2 points ago

Jobbie: Scottish slang for shit.

[–]PuTongHua 1 point2 points ago

I guess "Jobbie" doesn't mean the same thing in America as it does here.

Oh get original content? Just get original content? Why don't I strap on my OC helmet on, and squeeze into a original content cannon and fire off into OC land?

[–]Karl_Satan 0 points1 point ago

Persistence. Annoy the fuck out of them, make it known you want the job. Say how you're willing to do whatever it takes. It takes a lot if time, but if you present yourself well and keep on it you have a good chance.

[–]nytelife 0 points1 point ago

[–]teeves 0 points1 point ago

it pains me to downvote this amazing repost

[–]quickerthanthedead 0 points1 point ago

When I was little my grandma called going to the toilet to take a dumb "going to do jobies"

[–]Epicfro 0 points1 point ago

To be fair I have two jobs ( cable tech, auto parts store) and they weren't super hard to find. Just took a few months of full time searching. If you want to work there are jobs out there. Still hillarious though.

[–]piranhadub 0 points1 point ago

Make a repost? Sure I'll just hop in my repost cannon and fire off into repost land where blah blah blah on reposties!

[–]Telsak 0 points1 point ago

The worst part is when you're unemployed, desperate for a job and get denied because they claim you are overqualified. That's happened to me twice now and I'm starting to worry.

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point ago

Stupid that people are downvoting this for telling the truth. The same people who are complaining about not having jobs now because of the bad economy didn't have jobs during the good economy and are just as lazy now as they were then.

[–]addeman94 0 points1 point ago

Or perhaps because we were studying during the "good" economy and don't want to throw our twelve years of edugation out the drain by getting stuck flipping burgers.

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point ago

If you studied something worthwhile you would have a job right now unless you're really that awful.

Most of the people who are unemployed lack a college degree. Unemployment is very low (Around 3 - 4% in most cases) for people with a college degree or higher. You're just making up excuses for yourself.

Furthermore, studying is not a job. I worked at jobs all throughout university instead of going out and partying. Perhaps you should have tried that?

[–]addeman94 0 points1 point ago*

I live in Sweden. Here, when we study, we do it full time. In the "gymnasium"(16/17-19/20 years old) we have sceduled classes 8am to 5pm with a one hour lunch and have homework to do when we get home.
And after this I am supposed to go to a "högskola" or university, unless I want to compete with all the other youngsters that want to work for a year or two before getting further education, as well as the middle-aged people who lost their jobs during the last rescess, for the less shitty jobs that you can get with no education(cleaning toilets, flippping burgers, cleaning movie theaters) in the second-to-biggest of the three university cities we have in Sweden.
Yeah, I could get a job. How hard can it be?
Edit:Spelling.

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point ago

And also apparently brainwashed to believe that in order to do well in life (not clean toilets, flip burgers, or clean movie theaters) you need to have a university degree.

A friend of mine is also from Sweden, has no university degree, and lives in a villa in St. Jean Cap Ferrat. He owns over 20 companies.

Life. You're doing it wrong.

[–]FraggotMan -1 points0 points ago

LOL well this makes perfect sense. Fucking swedes have the biggest entitlement system on the planet so no wonder you think you deserve that big bucks job out of school.

Fucking LOL.

[–]FraggotMan 0 points1 point ago

Such a perfect example of The Entitled Generation. Expecting an 80k/yr job out of high school.

Fucking hilarious

[–]addeman94 1 point2 points ago

I do not want a top paid job. I want to work in the field I am getting an education to work in.

[–]FraggotMan -1 points0 points ago*

well for starters.....learn to spell 'education'.

also...fucking LOL...fucking swedes. Most entitlement based country ever

[–]feckineejit -2 points-1 points ago
