Serious question here: why is the subject sometimes called "math" but other times "maths"?

[–]BeatlesForSale[!] 64 points65 points ago

Math = American

Maths = British

[–]amolad 26 points27 points ago

Likewise:

Sports = American

Sport = British

[–]BeatlesForSale[!] 12 points13 points ago

Really? I've found both are used. "Cricket is a sport, in P.E. we do Sports"

[–]shnoog 0 points1 point ago

I think it's a little different. So "I like sport" vs. "I like sports".

[–]BeatlesForSale[!] 0 points1 point ago

I would still say "I like sports"

[–]shnoog 0 points1 point ago

Fair enough, might be influenced by American TV though? It's BBC Sport, not sports. That's the only example I could think of... Bit of a non-issue this.

[–]BeatlesForSale[!] 0 points1 point ago

Fair point. Maybe I've just been saying it wrong all these years haha.

[–]DoesntUnderstandJoke 1 point2 points ago

I thought Maths was just what the cool kids called it.

[–]tstevensonrocks -1 points0 points ago

My friend is studying abroad in England told me how it's called "Maths" in Europe and I got really excited that I recognized it here. Hooray for applicable learning!

[–]BlazingFox -1 points0 points ago

I came here to say that...

[–]Isunova 4 points5 points ago

BECAUSE FUCK THE FRENCH.

[–]RofyM 1 point2 points ago

Because some people prefer to call it mathematics instead of mathematic.

[–]iGotChubs4You 6 points7 points ago

I have never heard anyone call it 'mathematic'. It is always 'mathematics' because it's plural, which is why it makes sense for people to call it 'maths' when shortened because it is still plural. But in America it is just called 'math' and I don't know why.

[–]MaritMonkey 4 points5 points ago

I like to think we're just THAT lazy, we couldn't be bothered with one more consonant sound.

[–]iGotChubs4You 0 points1 point ago*

First off, if you yourself are American and you are being all "Americans are fat and lazy" than you are just plain ignorant and a typical American hating on America. Second, we spell color instead of colour and honor instead of honour and don't use the metric system. The explanations sure as fuck are not laziness....it's a different country and sometimes things are different.

I am a math major. Not a maths major. That is just how it is. It's not because of laziness.

[–]MaritMonkey 0 points1 point ago

Who pissed in your Cheerios?

[–]shnoog 1 point2 points ago

This is an important issue. Please don't joke about it. Americans everywhere are being stereotyped and oppressed for spelling words without u's and it's about damn time someone made a stand. You don't get stereotypes of other nations so why pick on the States? Disgusting.

[–]MaritMonkey 0 points1 point ago

WE HERE IN THE USA DON'T NEED YOUR STINKIN' EXTRA VOWELS. Unless, of course, it's a word we "borrowed" from somebody who took over England at some point or another and then realized it was a shithole and moved out, so we started pronouncing the word a way that didn't make any sense just to toss our various incarnations of conquerors a linguistic middle finger.

Also: I am naturally blonde and usually relatively articulate, but I totally valley-girl'd my way out of a ticket the one and only time I got pulled over. TAKE THAT, stereotypes.

[–]stubbyarea 12 points13 points ago

where do i buy that hat

[–]Accipiter1138 16 points17 points ago

[–]Alphare[S] 9 points10 points ago

OMG WHERE HAS THIS BEEN ALL MY LIFE

[–]WhatWeAllWantToSay 8 points9 points ago

discontinued...

[–]nikerocks123[!] 2 points3 points ago

Does anyone know of a place that still sells it?

[–]Dr_Zeuss 2 points3 points ago

I've looked for it everywhere. I mean, every time someone posts this picture, I sit for hours in front of the internets looking for this hat.

I might just make my own...

???

profit?

[–]Dr_Zeuss 1 point2 points ago

we need to email this people at uncommonhats at hotmail dot com and ask them to make this hats again!

[–]ArtilleryBear 8 points9 points ago

[–]FrancisDSOwen 2 points3 points ago*

Hey wow. I captioned that picture back on 4chan a couple years back. It always makes me happy to see it pop up random places.

In case anyone was wondering, this is the website of the man in the picture, Marshall Rosenberg.

[–]Alphare[S] 0 points1 point ago

Thank you for the giggles, then.

[–]cutepuppy_or_NSFL 11 points12 points ago*

Haha. That's an adorable hat, and probably wouldn't make sense even with context. :)

[–]Radicou 12 points13 points ago

Just gambled everything without realizing what I was doing.

I don't like you.

[–]no_more_jokes 6 points7 points ago

I really like the potential in this novelty account. It's like playing Russian Roulette. Please, ignore the downvotes, and continue your comments.

[–]ImOnJeopardy 1 point2 points ago

I'll take "Comical Headgear on Irritated People" for $200 please, Alex.

[–]nagster5 0 points1 point ago

this has potential

[–]Rascal-89 1 point2 points ago

Im going to have this picture framed and put on my desk

[–]f7ujelly 3 points4 points ago

dat hat

[–]jezibel 2 points3 points ago

As someone with a math degree, I know exactly what you mean!

[–]samma_jamma 1 point2 points ago

Sadly, this is how I feel when I play DnD and I can't do simple math fast enough before something else happens that requires more simple math.

[–]woodyallin 1 point2 points ago

Maths

You must be from the UK

[–]Catobleman 0 points1 point ago

...What are you talking about? Interrupts you in math class when you're not using your calculator? What the fuck? Why are people interrupting you in class? What are you doing? Why are you not thinking (and thus okay with being interrupted) when using a calculator, but when you're not...? What? I don't understand anything about this post, and that picture is old as fuck. What are you doing. Go outside.

[–]iamaiamscat 0 points1 point ago

Maths.. that's on the short list of what really annoys me as an American in the UK!

mum, bum, arse, maths.. those are my nemeses.

[–]Doopz479 1 point2 points ago

Wait, what's bum in America? Bom?

[–]iamaiamscat 0 points1 point ago

Butt

[–]everyonegetsastar -1 points0 points ago*

From what I understand, the equivalent for bum is butt for them. Their primary use of the word bum is synonymous with drunkard.

Edit: See Durzo_Blint's correction below.

[–]Durzo_Blint -1 points0 points ago

Actually bum just means homeless. Shitfaced however does mean drunk.

[–]everyonegetsastar 0 points1 point ago

Oh, sorry then!

“mathematics” is a collective noun (as is “physics,” etc.), so it’s considered singular. You can tell that from how “mathematics” is treated grammatically

It makes just as much sense to say math than maths.

[–]Apostropartheid 1 point2 points ago

Collective nouns are not necessarily considered singular in Commonwealth English.

[–]shivers13 0 points1 point ago

Saw this a long time ago on /pol/

[–]DemonMuffins 0 points1 point ago

Recently I've been seeing a whole bunch of images I saved onto my computer like 3 years ago. This is the 8th one. I'm scared someone is accessing my harddrive.

[–]BobSaget23 0 points1 point ago

Congratulations! You are the 10,000th person to post this picture on Reddit. You win one downvote!

[–]Zamorak 0 points1 point ago

Still a classic.

[–]JackOfTrades11 0 points1 point ago

He's got his thinking cap on.

[–]enriquesford 0 points1 point ago

[–]mcelysium 0 points1 point ago

[–]jazzybear 0 points1 point ago

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point ago

[–]Neophobias 0 points1 point ago

Maths

English person!

[–]sarahpalinstesticles 0 points1 point ago

I've seen this picture a bunch of time and always wondered the context. Anybody know the answer?

[–]FrancisDSOwen 2 points3 points ago*

The man in the picture is named Marshall Rosenberg. He does talks on something called "Nonviolent Communication", but I'm afraid I've only seen clips of his videos. From what I've seen, he likes to wear giraffe hats and use giraffe puppets in his talks.

It's awesome that you've seen this picture "a bunch of times" :)

[–]sarahpalinstesticles 0 points1 point ago

Thanks for the explanation.

[–]syflox 0 points1 point ago

I submitted this picture 8 months back on the /r/tf2, here's the link if you care to look. http://www.reddit.com/r/tf2/comments/jqsso/when_people_argue_on_tf2/

[–]FrancisDSOwen 1 point2 points ago

I did care to look, thanks!

[–]endlessly_amused 0 points1 point ago

He calls non violent communication giraffe talk, because giraffes have a large heart. Violent communication is jackal talk, which when used by a workshop participant he'll howl at them. He also has a hat for that.

[–]FrancisDSOwen 0 points1 point ago

That's kinda cool. I need to get around to watching one of his talks in its entirety one of these days.

[–]bobisoft2k5 0 points1 point ago

SOMEBODY FUCKING EXPLAIN TO ME HOW YOU CAN HAVE MORE THAN ONE MATH IN A CLASS

[–]geusebio 0 points1 point ago

The same way you can have more than one Physic!

[–]planet5421 0 points1 point ago

[–]FrancisDSOwen 0 points1 point ago

Do you have any idea who the original creator of that is? It's pretty much my favourite thing ever.

[–]planet5421 0 points1 point ago

No clue, sorry. Saw it on ponychan quite a while back.

[–]gtr427 -1 points0 points ago

I've never understood why it's called maths. Extra i in aluminum? Makes sense, there's one in titanium after all. But math is math, as long as you're using base 10 it's all the same thing regardless of whether you're doing multiplication or tensor calculus.

[–]Apostropartheid 2 points3 points ago

Do you call physics physic?

[–]Captain_Ligature -1 points0 points ago

What the fuck would you need a calculator for in maths?

[–]L_Dawg 1 point2 points ago

Doing sums I'm guessing?

[–]Corpsman87 -1 points0 points ago

Maths class its right nex to Englishs class

[–]geusebio 0 points1 point ago

And next to the Physic labs?

How about near the home economic department?

[–]sfitzer -2 points-1 points ago

twenty-teen-thirty-nine-five-thousand

[–]TumorPizza -2 points-1 points ago

"Maths". Britainians talk funny.
