Rules

  1. No screenshots, or pictures with added or superimposed text. This includes image macros, comics, info-graphics and most diagrams. Text (e.g. a URL) serving to credit the original author is exempt.

  2. No gore or porn. NSFW content must be tagged.

  3. No personal information. This includes anything hosted on Facebook's servers, as they can be traced to the original account holder. Stalking & harassment will not be tolerated.

  4. No solicitation of votes (including "cake day" posts), posts with their sole purpose being to communicate with another redditor, or [FIXED] posts. DAE posts go in /r/DoesAnybodyElse. "Fixed" posts should be added as a comment to the original image.

  5. Submissions must link directly to a specific image file or to an image hosting website with minimal ads. We do not allow blog hosting of images ("blogspam"), but links to albums on image hosting websites are okay. URL shorteners are prohibited.

  • If your submission appears to be filtered but definitely meets the above rules, please send us a message with a link to the comments section of your post (not a direct link to the image). Don't delete it as that just makes the filter hate you!

  • If you come across any rule violations, please report the submission or message the mods and one of us will remove it!

Please also try to come up with original post titles. Submissions that use certain clichés/memes will be automatically tagged with a warning.

Photographer: Sally Mann.

[–]KFCatz 104 points105 points ago

This one is super dooper creepy to me.

[–]Slenderpman 43 points44 points ago

This guy is being choked by slenderman

[–]KFCatz 33 points34 points ago

More like SallyMann!

I'll show myself out.

[–]kuphinit 9 points10 points ago

The Slenderman story was so captivating.

[–]Louaym 4 points5 points ago

The night I learned about him, I had a dream about every variation of him... So many good horror movie ideas.

[–]Heroshade 1 point2 points ago

I'll do ya one better. I had a dream about him before I actually heard about him. Didn't know anything about him until I told someone about it and they linked me a bunch of shit. Needless to say, I was utterly terrified.

[–]Trashcanman33 18 points19 points ago

Reminds me of "Lolita".

[–]YayILikePie 5 points6 points ago

Lolita, light of my life, fire of my loins. My sin, my soul. Lo-lee-ta: the tip of the tongue taking a trip of three steps down the palate to tap, at three, on the teeth. Lo. Lee. Ta.

[–]the_girl 3 points4 points ago

Love, love, love that book.

The part where he imagined turning her inside out and kissing her organs? Such an incredible mix of depravity, obsession, and awful beauty.

Found it:

My only grudge against nature was that I could not turn my Lolita inside out and apply voracious lips to her young matrix, her unknown heart, her nacreous liver, the sea-grapes of her lungs, her comely twin kidneys.

[–]ArchangelleFerdinand 6 points7 points ago

[–]Fat_Tuesday 1 point2 points ago

[–][deleted] 2 points3 points ago

Dos Ojos is a beautiful cenote.

[–]mulberrybushes 3 points4 points ago

That looks more Ike Natalia Vodiavanova thn Sally Mann

[–]Bobs_brother_Cecil 3 points4 points ago

Wow, that's dark.

[–]henrikdons 3 points4 points ago

Her presence and the intensity of her pictures really makes her stand out. You can really feel Sally Mann through her pictures in a way that I don't see very often from other photographers.

[–]Quietlike 1 point2 points ago

As soon as I saw this photo I knew it was Ms. Mann's.

I stayed at Ms. Mann's house several years ago. My ex-gf was one of the kids she used to photograph in the 90's, and she is very tight with all the families of her subjects. I've never seen any of her books, but my ex had pictures all over the place that Ms. Mann took, including one of my ex (obviously when she was still a kid) wearing a shirt that said "a woman needs a man like a fish needs a bicycle."
Lexington is fucking beautiful. Ms. Mann gave us a ride down to the Maury River and we went canoeing. I have vivid memories of that weekend, but I've never been back.

[–]ScaredToSpeak 8 points9 points ago

Yeah, that's her daughter in the pic too.

She has a great eye, but I can't help but find it disturbing that she has her kids pose for nudes...

[–]rogerista 103 points104 points ago

There have been many lectures given, articles written, and talks given by the artist herself over this. They were little kids in the summer who just didn't wear clothes, totally normal for many people who live somewhere more rural.

The day one of them said they didn't want any more pictures of them without clothes she stopped.

[–]ajsander12 103 points104 points ago

I ran around naked all the time when I was younger. Who didn't?

[–]Conchobair 104 points105 points ago

I never really stopped.

[–]Sthurlangue 36 points37 points ago

Party at Conchobair's!

[–]Killfile 47 points48 points ago

I grew up with one of her kids, Emmet; I think he works for a lawn care service that my parents use now. In any case, these portraits are from her Intimate Family series which are far and away her most controversial.

I always wondered if her kids suffered in school because of these photographs. To my knowledge no one ever gave Emmet any crap about it, but it's hard to imagine that children -- being children -- woudln't be jerks about it.

In any case, Sally's a hell of a photographer; I've always admired the way she captures light and skin-tone. Agree or disagree with her work, you've got to admit that it's amazing stuff.

[–]Quietlike 5 points6 points ago

My ex was friends with the family (real tight with her daughter), and was in many of her pictures. I recall meeting Emmet, vaguely, but man it was frickin years and years ago. Must've been 2003.....?
You probably knew my ex, too. What's funny about it is that my ex takes me to this house to stay for the weekend and meet these folks, and she tells me that she's a famous photographer. At the time, I had no idea or context for HOW famous. The photographs all over the walls gave me a good idea for how talented she was.

[–]meowbarkhiss 1 point2 points ago

Far out! Here's a pic of me and Emmett taken by his Mom down on the Maury one day. I used to spend the summers in Lexington with my Mom. This pic appears in the same book. Emmett And The Whiteboy

[–]Ikimasen 13 points14 points ago

But what about the day when her kids say "I wish those pictures of me from before I knew to say 'no' didn't exist?"

(Not trying to be an asshole, really think it might be worth talking about.)

[–]calicocal 5 points6 points ago

Honestly, what kid doesn't have embarrassing/naked photos of them?

[–]mainsworth 4 points5 points ago

Well, my mom never published 100s of them in a photography book. A bit different.

[–]calicocal 1 point2 points ago

Understandable

[–]nebock 1 point2 points ago

Spot on here. Listen to some of her talks and it lessens the impact greatly.

[–]ademu5 3 points4 points ago

illegal in washington

[–]justjokingnotreally 12 points13 points ago

We don't just write anti-animal-sex laws willy-nilly in the WA. Someone has to get fucked to death by a horse first.

[–]oybeas 9 points10 points ago

you should watch her documentary its gives a lot of insight into her and her photography.

[–]jrfish 2 points3 points ago

what's it called?

[–]oybeas 5 points6 points ago*

What Remains, I think you can watch it in parts on youtube maybe. http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0483836/

Edit: Just so you know near the end it does cover her photographing decomposing bodies at a forensic research facility. I really love the Body Farm series but it might disturb some.

[–]AcidTongue 2 points3 points ago

I watched this about a year ago and I must say that it's definitely something worth watching. Sally Mann is incredibly interesting.

[–]jrfish 1 point2 points ago

Thanks! She's one of my favorite photographers. I'll have to check that out.

[–]cummintoniterocks 18 points19 points ago

I watched a documentary and she claims she took photos of them nude cause they were nude all the time. They live in the mountains and the parents didn't care if they didn't wear clothes so all the kids just chose not to!

[–]VeeFu 12 points13 points ago

Is it disturbing because they are children or because they are her children?

[–]LeDocteur 26 points27 points ago

Ugh, neither.

It's crazy how people so quickly jump from nudity to sex. It's the human body, it's beautiful. It's intriguing at every age.

I don't understand why so many people can't understand that appreciating the beauty or intrigue of something =/= wanting to fuck it.

[–]garfunkelle 19 points20 points ago

Yes.

[–]icescoop 9 points10 points ago

Pedobear's going to be all over this

[–][deleted] ago

[–]amod00 31 points32 points ago

Which is something pretty stupid to assume.

There's no purpose of sexual use or abuse of that child. Art deals with the knowledge society has of things.

Freud's theory that sexuality starts at young age influenced our entire culture and exploring this is only natural in art. (Not exploiting, mind you)

Being all politically correct about things only builds prejudice and ignorance creating tabus and things we can't discuss.

If some pervert want's to masturbate for a kid picture or if some pervert explores that to profit on innocent children that's cruel and thats CP.

That's not what those people here are doing. Their art is provocative and what t provokes is sexual confusion in one's mind that should be dealt with, not avoided.

And that's one of the many wonders of Art.

[–]MyaaahKitty 6 points7 points ago

I wasn't talking about "Art" in general, I was pointing to this particular case. Have you seen other pics from the set, or are you making judgments based on the one mild pic I posted? See this comment I made in the thread for more explicit work. And (now that she's grown up) the girl herself considers it exploitation, and is therefor suing her mother over the pictures for emotional distress.

[–]AtomikRadio 35 points36 points ago*

Sorry but what's NSFW about that? Or pornographic in any way?

Edit: I don't mind the downvotes so much as the lack of an answer to my question. In the picture there is a child fully clothed engaged in no sexual acts at all. Makeup and a dress, but certainly no child porn or NSFW-ness.

[–]violentacrez 4 points5 points ago

Have you seen Maladolescenza?

[–]Do_Work_Son 6 points7 points ago

wut

[–]NeverStopPosting 17 points18 points ago

So taking pictures of girls in dresses is disturbing...

TIL that 4chan makes reddit seem like child's play.

[–]indeedwatson 6 points7 points ago

I see what you did there.

[–]wodahSShadow 9 points10 points ago

I clicked it with RES, tried to close again quick, res moved the image a few pixels after loading, it opened a new tab with the pic enlarged, panic.

[–]elquacko 40 points41 points ago

[–]FullyInsured 22 points23 points ago

Enough internet for today, I'm gonna go burn my laptop and get a lawyer.

[–]Falvtron 17 points18 points ago

[–]mdickw 12 points13 points ago

[–]womanisadangercat 16 points17 points ago

Vulva.

That is a child's vulva.

[–]ascii 10 points11 points ago

Fuck. I did not need to see that.

Not angry at you for posting it (You gave fair warning), but why the hell did I click that link?

[–]Rockyrambo 23 points24 points ago

That is awful! In no way whatsoever should that be considered art. It's CP, plain and simple.

[–]hassani1387 4 points5 points ago*

People can sue each other for whatever they want. Question is, was she convicted or anything?

[–]djslim21 10 points11 points ago

of all the blood, guts, and death on this site, this truly is the worst I've felt. You gave fair warning and I still clicked. I'm gonna go punch a bullet. With my face.

[–]graffiti81 73 points74 points ago

It interests me that people have a more visceral reaction to a naked youth than they do to a person floating in a bathtub rotted to bones (see /r/wtf from today).

[–]ramblerman 34 points35 points ago*

good point, I think more than being shocked at the image itself though people have a visceral reaction out of fear.

  • there is now cp on my pc

  • what if someone walks in and thinks I'm a pedophile.

  • etc...

I don't think western culture currently has a bigger 'social pariah' than the pedophile. So it's only natural people want to make very clear they don't belong to that group in any way whatsoever.

[–]graffiti81 5 points6 points ago

That, too, is kind of sad.

[–]uberduger 8 points9 points ago

But for it to be cp, it has to be 'porn'. That's not porn. It's art. Might be a bizarre type of art that I can't understand anyone having an interest in unless they're a bit of warped, but it's still art.

[–]cyber_dildonics 11 points12 points ago

Actually, that's not true. Intercourse and even nudity are not requirements for an image to be considered child porn. At least in the US.

Dost Test

In order to better determine whether a visual depiction of a minor constitutes a "lascivious exhibition of the genitals or pubic area" under 18 U.S.C. § 2256(2)(A), the court developed six criteria. Not all of the criteria need to be met, nor are other criteria necessarily excluded in this test.[1][2]

  • Whether the focal point of the visual depiction is on the child's genitalia or pubic area.
  • Whether the setting of the visual depiction is sexually suggestive, i.e., in a place or pose generally associated with sexual activity.
  • Whether the child is depicted in an unnatural pose, or in inappropriate attire, considering the age of the child.
  • Whether the child is fully or partially clothed, or nude.
  • Whether the visual depiction suggests sexual coyness or a willingness to engage in sexual activity.
  • Whether the visual depiction is intended or designed to elicit a sexual response in the viewer.

[–]VeeFu 2 points3 points ago

Perhaps humans empathize more easily with the living than the dead.

[–]ademu5 3 points4 points ago

hey guy, don't shoot yourself and stuff

[–]amheekin 1 point2 points ago

What the hell? How is that at all legal?

[–]mdickw 23 points24 points ago*

Contrary to popular belief, under US law, the material needs to show or or be proven to have some link to sexual activity to be considered child pornography (not that I'm a lawyer or a child pornography enthusiast or anything). Photos of naked children do not, in and of themselves, constitute child pornography.

[–]cyber_dildonics 6 points7 points ago

Except this was in France

[–]mdickw 8 points9 points ago

True, though most of the people in this thread freaking out thinking they're going to go to jail after clicking those links are probably concerned about US law.

[–]TurboDisturbo 2 points3 points ago

Does it get better than the first episode's level of quality? I was not blown away by the pilot

[–]krider91 24 points25 points ago

Yes, it does.

[–]saffir 12 points13 points ago

I'm a die-hard fan of the show and even I don't defend the first few episodes... the later half of the first season is when it gets its fun

[–]baconairfreshener 9 points10 points ago

Same with Parks and Rec in my opinion. The whole first season was terrible, then it got amazing

[–]saffir 1 point2 points ago

hrm... I got turned off Parks and Rec for the very same reason... maybe I'll give it another shot

[–]TurboDisturbo 4 points5 points ago

Ok, I'll stick with it, thanks

[–]suprmario 1 point2 points ago

You won't regret it.

[–]yoursmokingbuddy 1 point2 points ago

Really? Not that I disagree with your right to dislike the first few episodes, but I really feel like the first few episodes captured who these characters are at their core. There have been a TON of character growth episodes recently, but deep down these characters are very same to how they were in the first few eps.

What is it about these eps that you don't really care for?

[–]saffir 1 point2 points ago

Honestly I felt like the characters in the first few episodes are nothing like the ones we've grown to love. Jeff is a weak-willed liar, admitting defeat. Troy is the dumb jock who can't take a joke. Britta is the hot chick who outsmarts everyone. Abed has no friends because he's weird and unlovable.

Those characters seem alien to the ones that I tune in to watch. I understand your point about development, but I feel the develop started off midway through the first season, from new characters.

[–]zombiebacon 12 points13 points ago

It does. And seriously...there's been like 2 good pilots EVER. They almost all stink until they find their stride.

[–]Djorak 2 points3 points ago

Which shows are you thinking about for those 2 good pilots?

[–]deadpansnarker 8 points9 points ago

I'm assuming Arrested Development and Cheers, those two are the ones critics tend to feel came out fully formed

[–]Pokez 3 points4 points ago

LOST

[–]scvnext 1 point2 points ago

Perhaps It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia

[–]MylesLandberg 1 point2 points ago

I'd say Breaking Bad, that pilot was amazing and left me only wanting more.

[–]Psyducks 2 points3 points ago

I thought smallville had a good pilot

[–]TrebeksUpperLIp 1 point2 points ago

Breaking Bad was awesome. Lost got me hooked. But You are definitely right. Especially comedies like this need to establish characters.

[–]Naezwood 5 points6 points ago

I just knew this was going to be the top comment.

[–]indeedwatson 0 points1 point ago

It should be.

[–]palordrolap 1 point2 points ago

I see your relevant and raise you another relevant.

[–]id416 206 points207 points ago

Seeing someone that young and looking that jaded...

Feels heavy, man.

[–][deleted] 105 points106 points ago*

I immediately thought of Jenny from Forrest Gump.

[–]uptwolait 21 points22 points ago

This one also by Sally Mann even looks like Jenny.

[–]nbenzi 4 points5 points ago

woah that girl's face is so intense.

[–]whoa_not_woah 10 points11 points ago

[–]nbenzi 1 point2 points ago

haha thanks for the lesson

[–]AcidTongue 1 point2 points ago

I'm pretty sure it's called something like "Jessie bites" if I recall correctly. Hence the bite marks on her dad's arm.

[–]rayracer141 14 points15 points ago

this photo reminds me of this little girl smoker. i cant remember the photographer though.

[–]countclouds 9 points10 points ago

Mary Ellen Mark if I'm not mistaken.

[–]threehearts 1 point2 points ago

yep. The photo is titled Amanda and Her Cousin Amy.

[–]jtryti 20 points21 points ago

Looks like she's been through more than I ever will.

[–]sreddit 4 points5 points ago

The shit I've seen...

[–]Account_For_Thought 77 points78 points ago

Dammit I knew cigarettes made you look cool!

[–]Incredible_Mandible 49 points50 points ago

I know right? I hate cigarettes, think they are disgusting, but I have to admit, that is the coolest 10-year-old in the world.

[–]Emperor_Norton_1 22 points23 points ago

Damn I miss candy cigarettes.....yum, chalky goodness!

[–]rickdias27 11 points12 points ago

I still see them around, just called candy 'sticks' now, and there's no red tip.

[–]Trackpad94 1 point2 points ago

This disappointed me so much... although I smoke now so... yeah, probably a good thing. They were still pretty badass, though.

[–]palpablescalpel 65 points66 points ago

That girl looks pretty badass.

[–]palpablescalpel 1 point2 points ago

Guuuh thanks. I'll be listening to that album all day now!

[–]knirefnel 17 points18 points ago

[–]Borneofunction 12 points13 points ago

I've had the low res version of this for ages and always thought the person in the background was hanging and the girl was attending a lynching

[–]TooSubtle 109 points110 points ago

LOOK AT ME I AM ON STILTS

[–]graymankin 19 points20 points ago

That's what fascinated me most about that photo.

[–]Se7en_Sinner 4 points5 points ago

I thought he was going up a slide at first.

[–]OrphanShepherd 1 point2 points ago

Another shitty "Above the Influence" commercial.

[–]severedfinger 17 points18 points ago*

Saw a Sally Mann book a while back; it is surprising, even shocking. But it certainly isn't porn... porn is mean to arouse, and nothing more. These are very beautiful, tasteful images. Does anyone consider the classic Blind Faith album with the colorized photo of a young nude girl "porn"? Of course not. You can buy it on Amazon for pete's sake. If you can't tell the difference between porn and art, you seriously need to spend a little more time in museums.

[–]cclementi6 2 points3 points ago

Or more time on the internet.

[–][deleted] ago

[–]jdepps113 1 point2 points ago

So when were these pictures taken? (I had thought they were from the 60's or something but the photographer was apparently still a kid then.)

[–]SpyhopX 1 point2 points ago

The pickup truck in one of the photos has a 91 registration sticker on the license plate so I'd guess that one is from 1990 or 1991.

[–]hunny_bunny 8 points9 points ago

I remember candy cigarettes being sold at the corner store in the neighborhood. They were in a small box with a cowboy on them, I can't remember the name. You could puff them once and smoke would come out. Then you could unroll them and chew the pink cigarette bubblegum. They stopped selling them when I was 6. =(

[–]jdepps113 4 points5 points ago

I remember those. They were awesome! And the cigarettes came in multiple colors, not just pink. Some were orange, some were green, and there may have been other colors.

Of course, I'm now a smoker. I doubt this candy had anything to do with it, but that argument is better made by nonsmokers who nonetheless enjoyed those candies!

[–]ccaslin6 5 points6 points ago

I just went over this in my history of photography class. My professor said it was a real cigarette. I feel so misled :(

[–]wookie4747 6 points7 points ago

Its as if they are 40 year old women in children bodies. Crazy.

[–]dugapony 11 points12 points ago

sally mann is the shit

[–]cakeonaplate 7 points8 points ago

I remember looking through this book of photographs in my schools library. I remember child nudity, beautiful nature shots, and this creepy yet calm vibe throughout most of the photographs. Very strange, and it feels like you are reminiscing about your own life when you look at the series.

[–]allureee 30 points31 points ago

Great picture, from a great series "Immediate Family". People screaming CP, really? Really? Come on.

[–]lucidlyawake 5 points6 points ago

Reminds me of Sally Draper

[–]jdola 4 points5 points ago

[–]mikejam1958 20 points21 points ago

That is an absolutely beautiful young lady. Future heart breaker.

[–]jdepps113 16 points17 points ago

Current heart breaker, probably. Remember, there are boys her age.

[–]yammie072 3 points4 points ago

Then she's about my age, I think!

Man...Lindsay Lohan was always troubled huh?

[–]but_when_i_do 5 points6 points ago

The hell are you talking about. Her children have the coolest kid pictures ever. I'm sure they're thankful that they're part of photographic art history. While you and I have pics of ourselves wearing Starter jackets and holding tomagotchis, they have art.

[–]tamnoswal 7 points8 points ago

If a child is old enough to wear a watch they're old enough to smoke a cigarette on their way to buying me beer.

[–]DeaconOrlov 2 points3 points ago

I fucking love this pic, it's so jaded southern bell child. I imagine a glass of gin somewhere near by and a boy who keeps playing tag with other girls.

[–]Goosestag 2 points3 points ago

I think i'll take up smoking this week..

[–]asdeon 2 points3 points ago

I have noticed that lots of women smoke with their right hand over their stomachs and prop their left smoking hand like in this picture.

When I saw this picture in your post, I first thought, " that looks like Sally Manns work". Not much to my surprise after reading through the replies that my suspicions were confirmed. I watched a documentary about her and was thoroughly impressed. A lot of here work is produced on glass negatives which is a very difficult process. I have a lot of respect for her work and the medium that she chooses to work with. She is truly one of the last greats. Although some of her work may be controversial, it to me, is truly poetic if you get to know her as an artist. She is truly an artist of capturing the beauty of light.

I know at least 5 girls who has/had this photo as profile pic on facebook/twitter

[–]hanzelitus 4 points5 points ago

This is one of my all time favorite photographs.

For the record for those of you that have NO sense and can't see past your fucking penis - you don't win a GUGGENHEIM for 'porn'. Sally Mann has been a working photographer for years, and has other pieces than just these very few that are shown through the comments. She also works with landscapes, but the really amazing thing is that she shoots all of her work with old, broken cameras. Even in one interview (which she does not have often) she is talking to the interviewer while using her head -not figuratively - to load an 8x10 view camera that she's been using for upwards of 10 years. And those cameras are not light.

Just because you don't agree with a certain image or belief does not give you the right to call it shit.

[–]kavorka2 1 point2 points ago

what's up with the tin man on stilts in the background?

[–]Practitioner 1 point2 points ago

[–]vmrchs 1 point2 points ago

we used to have these around here. probably got banished due to public health issues and anti smoking laws.

[–]soal1 1 point2 points ago

How do you suppose that kid got up on those stilts?

[–]taterred 1 point2 points ago

Jenny?

[–]peaches1465 1 point2 points ago

That child is gorgeous.

[–]WhoNeedsRealLife 1 point2 points ago

Hard Candy cigarette

[–]RevTom 1 point2 points ago

I gotta say, it does make her look 100 times cooler. No wonder kids smoke

[–]ILikeLeptons 1 point2 points ago

damn it why do cigarettes make everyone look so damn cool?

[–]AlmostJack 1 point2 points ago

The photographer that took this photograph is called Sally Mann. It's a portrait of her daughters. it's actually quite a controversial project because of the subject matter

[–]Dannyg4821 1 point2 points ago

I like how there's a guy on stilts in the background

[–]tragic-waste-of-skin 1 point2 points ago

That little girl looks 10 years older, simply from having a cigarette in her hand and her pose. Amazing.

[–]Meth4Fun 1 point2 points ago

She probably grew up to be hot

[–]Punkgoblin 1 point2 points ago

To be fair, she's pretty smokin' without the cig.

[–]tanmandu 0 points1 point ago

That girl is going to break some hearts when she gets older.

[–]_driftwood -1 points0 points ago

Wow, we can submit classic well known photographs by famous photographers with absolutely no credit, link, or relevance to the subreddit and get massive karma?

[–]Salty-Sailor 1 point2 points ago

Agreed - I shouldn't have to wade through all the comments just to find out who did the picture.

[–]randumnumber 0 points1 point ago

If she smokes she pokes.
