Ah, 'Hot Shots'. Not as funny as 'Airplane!' but it'll do at a pinch.

[–]zendick 93 points94 points ago*

fun fact, US military which normally honors such requests, refused to allow any US military equipment or personnel to help with the movie, which is why they use British (not french as I thought) equipment and planes.

Fixed name brand

[–]bigjo66 28 points29 points ago

Except the aircraft used in Hot Shots was the Folland Gnat, which is British.

[–]zendick 11 points12 points ago

whoops sorry I remembered it being french! In the end same result though french would have been funnier.

[–]jared030858 23 points24 points ago

Whoa whoa, so what this thread of comments is telling me....is a human cannot carry a 500lb bomb on their shoulder?

[–]Semper-Fib 86 points87 points ago

When I was serving in the Marine Core (SEALS division Alpha) deployed in the Persian Gulf we ran drills on the deck of the aircraft carrier, holding Patriot missiles on our shoulders, so one of those 500 pound bombs you see there would be no problem. Except maybe to a civilian like yourself.

[–]EquinsuOcha 64 points65 points ago

At first I was like, "core?" and then (Seals instead of Recon) and then (SEALS are in teams, and they're Navy), and then aircraft carriers (we're on LHA's and LPD's), and then Patriot missiles (which are anti-missile missiles and we use phalanx system instead), and then...

Then I read the user name and I realized that despite knowing all the accurate things about this story, I'm pretty stupid.

Well played sir. Well played.

[–]saxy_toss 13 points14 points ago

You, sir, get an upvote for your name alone. Bumblebee Tuna!

[–]EquinsuOcha 17 points18 points ago

^(your balls are showing)

Bumblebee tuna!

[–]MaritMonkey 6 points7 points ago

God damn that was obscure. Thank you for helping me decide what I'm watching today at work and making me feel old with a single username!

[–]AnsheShem 4 points5 points ago

Chicago!

[–]EyebrowZing 1 point2 points ago

The user name golden.

But jarheads on carriers aren't uncommon. Marine F-18 squadrons can be assigned to carrier air groups. I have a year of sea time on the Truman because of this.

And AIM-9X missiles can (with difficulty) be held over the shoulder by one person.

[–]Theothor 0 points1 point ago

I'm missing all the jokes here! What does his name mean? And what does your name mean?

[–]lfgbrd 4 points5 points ago

The Marine Corps' moto is Semper-Fi, but the guy's name is Semper-Fib, Fib being a lie.

Equinsu Ocha is a quote from Ace Ventura, I think.

[–]EquinsuOcha 0 points1 point ago

That is all correct.

[–]Unsung_Zero 0 points1 point ago

White devil!

[–]DJPhil 2 points3 points ago

I see what you're doing, and I approve. Have an upvote.

[–]YeltsinYerMouth 0 points1 point ago

Its a simple matter of weight ratios.

[–]Deutscher_Aggie 0 points1 point ago

They also used the Vought A-7 Corsair II, which is what the aircraft in the background of this scene is.

[–]bigjo66 0 points1 point ago

True, and I think it was a mixture of T-38s and F-5s that were used as the Iraqi airforce?

[–]Deutscher_Aggie 0 points1 point ago

There was a Phantom II in there as well, yes.

[–]eidetic 0 points1 point ago

No, the aircraft in the background there is a Folland Gnat.

[–]HandyCore 8 points9 points ago

I seem to recall the movie Sgt. Bilko making very much a point before the credits the let the audience know that the army refused any help.

[–]abeuscher 6 points7 points ago

This is true for about half of all military movies. The military also refused to support GI Jane, Apocalypse Now, Platoon, and insisted that Kelly McGillis' character be changed from an officer to a civilian consultant in Top Gun before they were willing to pay for that homo-erotic awesome fest.

[–]MerlinsBeard 8 points9 points ago

Premise is correct, but some changes:

Kelly McGillis' character was originally enlisted and not an officer. It was changed to avoid any scrupulous fraternization between enlisted/officer which is correct and in-line with DoD guidelines.

The US Navy also didn't pay for Top Gun to be made. The USN appointed a former Top Gun Instructor to oversee it and eventually he relented from changing it to an excessively pedantic portrayal of US Naval Aviation to simply a movie that will sell. It's a Bruckheimer flick, that's to be expected.

[–]abeuscher 0 points1 point ago

Thanks for the corrections. I knew it was something like that, but I don't have 100% retention on my bathroom reading ;).

[–]redditreddit123123 0 points1 point ago

Sources for the top gun info ?

[–]MrBrawn 3 points4 points ago

that didn't stop "The Navy"

[–]zendick 0 points1 point ago

If you like adventure don't you wait to enter

[–]shitterplug 2 points3 points ago

'The Navy'

[–]zendick 0 points1 point ago

Where can you learn to fly, play in sports or skindive

[–]zendick 0 points1 point ago

they asked the Air force too

[–]shitterplug 2 points3 points ago

I was referring to a few clips in the movie where planes and ships have 'The Navy' written on them, instead of just 'Navy'.

[–]zendick 0 points1 point ago*

oh lol, I would have written that as 'the' Navy

[–]alle0441 1 point2 points ago

You know, I recently had this exact thought in my head while watching Act of Valor. They use a lot of footage of what appears to be real military equipment in action. Did the US Air Force/Navy/Marines really spend all that time and money to help make a film? Were they compensated at all?

[–]zendick 0 points1 point ago

They consider it recruitment value, the studios do usually chip in for some costs.

[–]zendick 17 points18 points ago

at least it got a part deux

[–]muffinmonk 6 points7 points ago

And part deaux was so much better than the first in every single way

[–]chainsaw_juggler 2 points3 points ago

"I loved you in Wall Street!"

[–]zendick 1 point2 points ago

I like the death counter!

[–]daschande 3 points4 points ago

Agreed. Airplane never had a part deux. Ever. ...And it certainly wouldn't have sucked because Leslie Neilsen would have had a kick-ass part.

[–]MadMageMC 4 points5 points ago

But I thought... Oh. Right.

[–]RavageJ 1 point2 points ago

I made it about 10 minutes into Airplane 2 before I wanted to punch my TV.

[–]mysticrudnin 3 points4 points ago

I liked it...

[–]AdamBombTV 1 point2 points ago

Me too.

Not as good as the first, but still got plenty of laughs out of me.

[–]RavageJ 0 points1 point ago

I want you to do an AMA as soon as possible.

[–]chainsaw_juggler 1 point2 points ago

But... Shatner!

[–]saxy_toss 1 point2 points ago

[–]Deddan 2 points3 points ago

La la la not listening!

[–]zendick 0 points1 point ago

that's a II and a sequel not a part deux lol

[–]saxy_toss 2 points3 points ago

Ok, wasn't sure if you literally meant a 'part deux' or just a sequel in general. =P

[–]zendick 2 points3 points ago

no I meant at least it got a part deux, not inferring that airplane didn't as I know it did. I mean I am grateful for the part deux lol, I was just busting your chops.

[–]saxy_toss 1 point2 points ago

Actually I didn't pay enough attention to the fact that you are not the person whose comment I replied to. XD

My Reddit-fu is still weak.

[–]NottaGrammerNasi 21 points22 points ago

Another one that I think a lot of people forget about is Top Secret! It's got a young Kilmer in it. Didn't know what to expect when watching it but was pleasantly surprised. Two other lesser known parody movies that were pretty decent that I think people didn't notice where this and this.

[–]stopsucking 4 points5 points ago

[–]desbaratto 4 points5 points ago

If everybody had a 12 gauge!

[–]thescrapplekid 1 point2 points ago

and a surfboard tooo

[–]TokyoXtreme 3 points4 points ago

I consider Top Secret! to be the Platonic ideal of the ZAZ films, the peak of perfection in which everything came together perfectly. My favorite scene is a simple one, but never fails to make me laugh.

[–]NottaGrammerNasi 0 points1 point ago

Reminds me of a scene from another movie... "I shall kill you until you die from it!"

[–]King_Crimson93 0 points1 point ago

Wasn't that in hot shots 2?

[–]NottaGrammerNasi 0 points1 point ago

Bingo was his name-o!

[–]xavier47 0 points1 point ago

seems like a "Murder by Death" reference

[–]RavageJ 3 points4 points ago

I love these movies as well:

Spy Hard

Loaded Weapon 1

[–]NottaGrammerNasi 0 points1 point ago

Also very solid movies.

[–]Yserbius 0 points1 point ago

Ha. I only recently learned the name of that movie which bugged me since I was 5 knowing only as the "Remote control laser airplane that explodes a house with popcorn" movie. Good thing Googling that exact phrase brings it up.

[–]circuzninja 6 points7 points ago

i found it funny that jon crier was also in that movie.

[–]anonaltimeter 4 points5 points ago

Poor guy had to have a multioptipupiloptomy.

[–]enderak 3 points4 points ago

In order to keep from damaging the eye sockets, they've got to go in through the rectum.

[–]Yserbius 6 points7 points ago

Back when Charlie Sheen was only doing helium.

[–]spattem 4 points5 points ago

"I have my fathers eyes"

[–]riversofgore 86 points87 points ago

As an Air Force weapons troop I can tell you nothing would happen. You can drop bombs from a plane unarmed and they won't explode.

[–]this_sort_of_thing 29 points30 points ago

I wonder how that works, how they can make a bomb go from dumb as a cat to kabawow

[–]flotiste 14 points15 points ago

There's a fuse that needs to be pushed back, which only happens at a certain velocity, and has to stay there for a certain length of time to engage. If this is not released, nothing happens.

This has to do with the grade of explosives too - C4, for example, you can light on fire, drive a truck over, eat (though it's really not recommended), and it will not explode. It's highly stable, and won't go off unless you set the detonation.

[–]cbass8282 26 points27 points ago

It's how the weapon is armed and fused.

[–]Today_is_Thursday 15 points16 points ago

Same could be said for the cat in the proper circumstances.

[–]popepeterjames 11 points12 points ago

catboom!

[–]Archontes 4 points5 points ago

[–]smart_robot 2 points3 points ago

What...did...I...just...watch...?

[–]opperior 0 points1 point ago

[–]Simon_Plenderson 9 points10 points ago

When they drop the bombs, the cats are ejected, which increases the intelligence of the weapon. This kills the cat.

[–]this_sort_of_thing 0 points1 point ago

Intelligence eh...

[–][deleted] ago

[deleted]

[–]Canadian_Infidel 0 points1 point ago

I'm assuming they are all high order explosives setting off low order ones and/or some sort of chemical/mechanical/electrical trigger. They would just disable the firing mechanism.

[–]akuta 1 point2 points ago

Even more simple. Most of them aren't enabled until they after they are mounted on the platform that will be doing the dropping. The very last thing that is done is the arming of the weapons.

[–]riversofgore 0 points1 point ago

Most bombs use little cables attached to the aircraft that arm the munitions when its released. The pilot can decide whether to drop it armed or not.

[–]niczar 20 points21 points ago

I've never been in the military but I can state with 99.99% confidence that no one could carry an actual bomb that size over their shoulder. They should weight at least 200 kg.

[–][deleted] 30 points31 points ago

Good thing Americans have no idea what a kilogram is. If we did, we might find that unfeasible.

[–]illstealurcandy 7 points8 points ago

It's about 440 lbs guys.

[–]im_bad_at_math 25 points26 points ago

That's like 6 tons!

[–]RoboNinjaPirate 16 points17 points ago

That's almost a Hectare!

[–]augenleet 13 points14 points ago

Hectare is a unit of time, idiot!

[–]Franks2000inchTV 5 points6 points ago

I could study this stuff for a light year and still never get it!

[–]AhhhClem 0 points1 point ago

I used to work for a guy named Hector.

[–]mkosmo 0 points1 point ago

Metric tons?!

[–]SoepWal 0 points1 point ago

It's about half of a mile right?

[–]Rohm 11 points12 points ago

I'm in the military and I can state with 43% confidence that this gif is a clip from a movie.

[–]popepeterjames 4 points5 points ago

Not to mention the ordinance would be far too heavy for a single person to shoulder and carry. That thing is the size of a 500 pounder.

[–]DJ-Anakin 2 points3 points ago

We dropped several. I'm still here!

:)

[–]riversofgore 0 points1 point ago

Are you at Hill AFB?

[–]DJ-Anakin 1 point2 points ago

I was B-52 weapons at Barksdale from 97-00.

[–]Canadian_Infidel 1 point2 points ago

I wonder how long before they starting making bombs that way..

[–]CaptainSmak 0 points1 point ago

one upvote for the username good sir.

[–]AtTheLeftThere 5 points6 points ago

as an Air Force avionics troop who formerly dated a slut from ammo, we can both laugh at how ridiculous women on any base are.

[–]chinchilla618 6 points7 points ago

Same here. Avionics that dated a weapons chick. We should hang out.

[–]AtTheLeftThere 2 points3 points ago

First round is on me, SSgt AtTheLeftThere, sir! 3X2? 3X1?

[–]Parchedflame 1 point2 points ago

Now KISS!

[–]DJ-Anakin 0 points1 point ago

Whoa! Whoa! Whoa!

Ammo and weapons are not the same. We all know Ammo sux!

[–]bhindblueyes430 0 points1 point ago

I think the main reason this scene could never happen is those size bombs being carried on their shoulders

[–]bestsrsfaceever 0 points1 point ago

Ya, my dad described a story of a prototype bunker buster that was being loaded for a test run and it became dislodged and just broke into millions of pieces.

[–]H_J_Farnsworth 0 points1 point ago

How easily would they explode if they were armed?

[–]rspeed 0 points1 point ago

Still pretty unlikely.

[–]H_J_Farnsworth 0 points1 point ago

Haha. I expected that, if armed, they wouldn't explode from a simple bump. What I meant was, exactly how easily would they explode?

[–]TylerDurdenisreal 0 points1 point ago

Like, maybe at about 9.8 meters per second?

[–]wyrdone42 0 points1 point ago

[–]riversofgore 0 points1 point ago

Depends on the munitions. Bombs and missiles are generally safe. The procedures and policies regarding the handling of munitions are for safety.

[–]flotiste 0 points1 point ago

I knew there'd be another military nerd who would correct this. Thanks!

[–]usedtowork 0 points1 point ago

as an Air Force weapons troop do you usually carry 500 pounders around on your shoulders

[–]riversofgore 0 points1 point ago

The Air force uses a bomb lift truck to load bombs. It's like a fork lift. The Navy loads their munitions by hand. They work in 4 person teams. Poles are connected to the ends of the bomb to facilitate loading. I'd ask a Navy guy to elaborate any further.

[–]nitefang 0 points1 point ago

Especially if they aren't real.

[–]riversofgore 0 points1 point ago

Right. I'm no scientist, but I'm fairly certain the likelihood of concrete exploding is very slim.

[–]nitefang 0 points1 point ago

Well, I doubt those are concrete, that would be very heavy to pick up, those are movie props for the movie "Hotshots!", a spoof of Top Gun. Not sure if you have seen it or not but it is pretty good.

[–]riversofgore 0 points1 point ago

Yes, I'm aware of everything you've said.

[–]nitefang 0 points1 point ago

Oh, do they use concrete to train with then?

[–]riversofgore 0 points1 point ago

Yes. Training munitions are filled with concrete to simulate their actual weights. It's important for the pilots to be able to fly a jet during training with the weight of actual munitions. This affects the fuel consumption and handling characteristics. The training munitions are designed to be as close to the real thing as possible including related electronic components.

Yankee Doodle Floppy Disk, this is Foxtrot Zulu Milkshake, checking in at 700 feet, request permission to land.

[–]jpiglet 7 points8 points ago

Please tell me you know this is from the movie Hot Shots! and not real.

[–]KillAllTheThings 1 point2 points ago

If your question is serious, the US never used that aircraft and there aren't very many guys who can hump a 500 lb/200 kg bomb over one shoulder.

[–]jpiglet 2 points3 points ago

I've found it best to never underestimate how stupid people can be.

[–]Deutscher_Aggie 0 points1 point ago

False - the aircraft in the background is a Vought A-7 Corsair II.

[–]vonshavingcream 3 points4 points ago

Hot shots is probably my favorite Lloyd Bridges movie. He has some excellent dialog in that.

Also Ryan Stiles was famous for his role as Rabinowitz before he was even cast as him in part deux!

[–]SirDigbyChknCaesar 4 points5 points ago

Bridges is hilarious in Hot Shots. He's the best part of the movie.

Admiral Benson: I slipped on a crab. Who put that crab there?

Lt. Commander Block: I don't see any crab, sir.

Admiral Benson: Don't tell me. There were two crabs. They work in pairs. I went to Annapolis for chrissakes!

[–]Yserbius 3 points4 points ago

I like the funeral scene where the Admiral gave a long, heartfelt speech vowing revenge for all the deaths from The Godfather II.
