You, sir, are a genius.

Did this post make anyone else feel ancient?

[–]FedsAgainstGunS 1 point2 points ago

Took me a second, but that was brilliant

[–]morzinbo 0 points1 point ago

So zetta slow...

[–]bibbleskit 0 points1 point ago

noooo. dammit i say something similar. It was like the equation was a bad guy and his plans were "foiled."

[–]Kbear52 0 points1 point ago

It's easy as shit

[–]Cpasky3 0 points1 point ago

Any true Spongebob fan is probably angry because he never says foiled it he says soiled it.

Probably a long unneccesart story but I'm going to tell it because maybe someone out there will read it and share my pain: I grew up in Indiana and learned the foil method like most normal people and then my junior year of HS moved to North Carolina where they used a whole different method called the box method. To me, this method is a lot easier but it wasn't at the time and I had a really rough time grasping it and had to basically relearn all of algebra because of it. Basically everything my new teacher did was backwards from what I had learned in the Midwest (it wasn't just foil that was different, he introduced a lot of new ways to do stuff that I had previously done). This really wasn't the problem, but when it got into more complicated stuff, the fact that I was doing stuff so differently made it difficult to follow lessons. And then when I moved to another school my senior year I was moved back to the foil method. Which sucked and I just said fuck it because I was not going to relearn that shit. Tl;dr learning is hard.

FOIL = First Outer Inner Last...so....uh...x-2=-2x? That wouldnt be true unless it was (x-2)....but this is how you foil. (xx=x2), (x2=2x), (-2x=-2x), (2*-2=-4)= (x2+2x-2x-4)-->(x2 -4). Btw, "x2" means x squared. The carot is the sign to show exponents.

[–]Aeronniell 1 point2 points ago

Wow it doesnt want to show the carot sign...lol im on my iphone....and i think i see what you meant, but you dont set x3 equal to -4.

X2****

[–]sebzim4500 1 point2 points ago

You know that there is an edit button right?

[–]Aeronniell 0 points1 point ago

Not on the mobile version~! im on my iphone...sadly, i cannot post nor edit anything. Just comment and up/down vote.

I would recommend alien blue, as a great app for reddit browsing on iPhone.

[–]sebzim4500 1 point2 points ago

This is getting way to complicated. Fuck foil, just multiply everything in one bracket by everything in the other.

[–]SixxSixxSixxthDemon 0 points1 point ago

Fuck it, I'll work at McDonalds.

[–]Acid-Trip 0 points1 point ago

Complicated? Maybe I can make it sound easier.

(x+2) (x+3) F(first)= multiply the first numbers or variables. O(uter)= multiply the outer numbers I(nner)= multiply the last number of the first one with the first number in the second one.

L(ast)= multiply the final numbers of each set.

So it equals x2+5x+6

X times x= x2 x times 3= 3x and x times 2= 2x (combine 3x and 2x into 5x)

3 times 2= 6

That's foil.

[–]sebzim4500 0 points1 point ago

Simpler way which requires less memorization: (x+2)(x+3) = x(x+3) + 2(x+3) = x2 + 3x + 2x + 6 = x2 + 5x + 6

[–]Acid-Trip 0 points1 point ago

Wait... Not trying to be disrespectful but how does first outer inner last require a lot of memorization?

[–]sebzim4500 0 points1 point ago

Four words... versus one concept. Personally, I find the concept much easier to remember.

[–]Acid-Trip 0 points1 point ago

I guess it depends on the person. As long as you can get the answer

[–]Guyag -1 points0 points ago

Teaching things like FOIL isn't going to be beneficial when anyone who learns it moves into more complicated maths, as things like that don't exist and if they need to use FOIL or such to do something quite so simple it's not teaching them vital maths skills.

[–]belleayreski 0 points1 point ago

its not equal to 0

[–]grammaticus -1 points0 points ago

Drat! Foiled again!

[–]denfilade -1 points0 points ago

Or in my case:

(x - 2)(x + 3)

= x2 - 6
