That has to feel so good to peel off.

[–]3brushie 75 points76 points ago

As someone with a similar kind of eczema, it does feel pretty awesome. When I was a kid and spent too long in the pool sometimes I'd peel off whole pieces half the size of the sole of my foot. It feels remarkably similar to peeling off dried glue, but with a "fresh skin" feeling afterward which is sorta hard to describe. Like a minor burn, but in a good way - it's sensitive, you feel the air move on it.

The thing is that you've got to be careful of is coming across a section which is still "attached" to the lower layers of the skin which aren't ready to come off yet. Peeling those off feels like peeling normal skin off.

Now that you mention it it is an awful lot like sunburn, though in my experience peeling from sunburn yields much thinner and more fragile pieces of skin. The ones I get are thicker even than what the picture above seems to show, and they retain finger and toe prints. I stopped playing guitar about six months ago, and when my finger callouses came off (mostly intact) they were opaque.

It's a wear thing, see. The skin peels off my fingertips and toes because I use them all the time, and it's worst on my thumbs and forefingers then progressively better toward my pinkies. If I find myself using them more than usual in a low-humidity environment (i.e., winter) they can even start to crack and bleed. With a desk job and thick socks it's really not too bad - at arm's length my hand looks like any other the vast majority of the time, and the rest of my skin is almost normal, if a little sensitive. On the "upside", I don't have scannable fingerprints - they're there, but there's too much interference from the layers coming off for the machine to accept them.

[–]hydromorphone -1 points0 points ago

Do you collect your fingerprints and toe tips in a jar for later?

[–]Veritas_LiberabitVos 2 points3 points ago

Ever watch Malcolm in the Middle? Well his brother does something similar to what your describing. Look it up on YouTube, I find it disgustingly fascinating.

[–]Gengar11 1 point2 points ago

Netflix link to Malcolm in the in the middle episode where reese gets a full body sunburn.

Sorry I couldn't find the youtube video people :/

[–]Stevoh 6 points7 points ago

SEE I KNEW SOMEONE ELSE DID THIS TOO! People would always stare at me when I was a wee lad. Or I'd bring it up sometimes and be like "ISN'T IT AWESOME!?" and people would be all like "... What? What is wrong with you?".

So yeah, I'm glad I'm not alone.

[–]MasterTotebag 6 points7 points ago

This gives me a satisfying feeling. Excellent description. Have an upvote.

[–]gleam 175 points176 points ago

My dad's hands and feet had gotten really swollen when he was sick, and his skin started sloughing off when he was recovering in a nursing home. Just so happened it was sloughing off when I brought my dog for a visit.

Yeah, my dog ate it. Lots and lots of it. Yeah.

[–]FireEnt 85 points86 points ago

That last "Yeah" killed me.

[–]InRustITrust 12 points13 points ago

Today we learned that Robert Duvall has a Reddit account.

pork rinds.

[–]retribute 8 points9 points ago

Interesting, yet partially disturbing story, I had a buddy I went to school with, we called him Pablo. Anyway, he used to peel his dead skin off his feet, and fry and then eat them/it.

[–]roboroller 9 points10 points ago

Partially disturbing? What kind of shit do you find to be all the way disturbing? because I'm pretty sure frying and eating your own dead skin is more or less beyond the motherfucking pale in the "stuff that is disturbing" department.

[–]thinkslifeis4chan 1 point2 points ago

uhh yes... that's a keeper

[–]retribute 0 points1 point ago

Other than his weird "pork rind" thing, and his pierced penis, he's a pretty good guy.

[–]retribute 1 point2 points ago

Well, I'm on WTF and NSFW_WTF daily, it was REALLY disturbing in high school, but since reddit, it's just another story to tell.

[–]BUKkAKE_WINDMILL 0 points1 point ago

You just need to live a little.

[–]Berticus88 4 points5 points ago

This story sounds familiar... Except last time it was more in depth. Did you post this on here before, or do we have a bunch of people here who know people who peel dead skin off their feet, fry it, and then eat it?

Account is 1 month old. We definitely have a population of people in this world who peel, fry, and eat their own dead skin off their feet.

[–]pencilears 2 points3 points ago

I used to peel off strips of skin from my feet, cook them on a lightbulb and eat them, not quite frying but close.

man I'm glad I got over doing that, walking around on raw sensitive feet was no fun.

[–]retribute 0 points1 point ago

I have not.

[–]bkauf7 -1 points0 points ago

i thought it was pork "grinds"

I had scarlet fever last year. Caused the skin on my feet and hands to slough off. My dog ate mine too.

[–]bennn30 25 points26 points ago

[–]_andy_dufresne 10 points11 points ago

[–]Londonsawsum 2 points3 points ago

[–]Irongate 3 points4 points ago

Yeah, is there a peeling subreddit? I mean, there's /r/popping for popping, so logically...

[–]white_picket_fencer 18 points19 points ago

Just clicked the link for /r/popping thinking of balloons. Should have known better.

[–]Fight4Light 1 point2 points ago

This is actually just a foot treatment that uses acid to eat away at the dead skin, not painful and it leaves your feet baby skin smooth. So yeah, I'm sure it feels good.

[–]holysocks 87 points88 points ago

peeling that would be AWESOME

[–]xebo[!] 41 points42 points ago

Why do we all want to do this? What is this compulsion?

[–]korkow 84 points85 points ago*

Getting rid of "unhealthy" things from your body is evolutionarily beneficial. This is why popping a pimple, emptying out the puss from an infection, etc are so satisfying. Your brain rewards you for helping prevent an infection.

That is to say, animals that derived pleasure from removing foreign/unhealthy objects from their body were more likely to survive and produce offspring than those that didn't, so the trait was passed on.

[–]commiewizard 18 points19 points ago

Wow, that is fascinating.

[–]GrapeJuicePlus 19 points20 points ago

Then why do i scabs?

[–]abuttt 28 points29 points ago

Evolution doesn't have any "direction" or "goal" behind it, so subtle distinctions like "scabs good, dead skin bad" are not guaranteed to show up. Our instinct is apparently only at the level of "if there's something weird on your body, get it off".

[–]PapauNewGuinea 7 points8 points ago

That last sentence is a good summary.

[–]HappyDays7 2 points3 points ago

Isn't that so the blood doesn't just pour out or something?

[–]crambronator 4 points5 points ago

Just to make you aware, popping a pimple is actually not "healthy." It exposes your body to a higher risk of infection and also increases the likelihood of scarring.

http://acne.about.com/od/acnefaqs/f/popping.htm

[–]korkow 8 points9 points ago

As a long term sufferer of acne, I am well aware of this. However, the satisfaction one gets from popping a pimple is really similar because it's removing something "yucky" from your system.

If I had to guess, I'd say that the "danger" of popping pimples is mostly cosmetic in nature, and very rarely life threatening. However, the drive to remove a human bot fly larva may very well save your life. Likewise, if you don't remove that ball of wax in your ear, you may not hear a predator stalking you (not really as applicable in modern humanity, but you get the idea).

[–]frzfox 0 points1 point ago

not doubting you but do you have any sources on that, I would like to read up more on this.

[–]korkow 1 point2 points ago

I can't seem to find any scholarly articles on the subject. I've spent several years studying/researching genetics , so I spend a lot of time thinking about possible evolutionary causes for seemingly strange things like this. I've never actually read a study saying on why removing unclean things from our body is so pleasant, but I'm pretty certain it's genetic, just based on the nature of it.

In general, just about every "natural" action that commonly elicits some sort of pleasure or pain response in the brain is probably an evolutionary characteristic. The "reward center" of our brain is tied to the most basic and necessary survival skills. Just off the top of my head, here are some examples:

  • Nutritional food tasting good (sugars, fats/oils and meats premium are energy sources in nature)
  • Having an immediate disgust/aversion of toxic foods. (mold, feces, rotting animals)
  • Being ticklish. In general, the ticklish parts of your body are the most vulnerable/important areas (stomach, neck, armpits, bottom of feet). If you're sleeping out in the wild, you'll immediately be roused and alert if some predator is touching a ticklish/vulnerable zone, which could possibly save your life.
  • Exercising, or "runner's high". Obviously, being physically fit can help you stay alive, so the brain rewards exercise with a nice dose of dopamine. Here is an interesting article on the matter
  • Pain. Although it sucks, experiencing pain is extremely useful for survival. There's a good reason that getting hit in the balls is so absurdly painful and unpleasant. It serves as a deterrent from damaging the absolute most important factor of evolution: being able to reproduce. If you can't produce offspring, none of your traits will ever be passed on.
  • Sex. It's one of the most desirable sensations we have. If you don't have a sex drive, you don't reproduce, and thus your genes aren't passed on. Intercourse, from an outside perspective, is really bizarre and physically awkward. Even if you're strong, fit, healthy, and live a thousand years, but never have the desire to have sex, your wonderful genes will simply end with you.

I'm really fascinated by this sort of thing, because I keep finding more and more little things that most people take for granted, but have an important evolutionary cause. Also, I've had to deal with moderate/severe acne for a long long time now, so I'm extremely familiar with the satisfaction good pimple popping. The little "rush" that comes from purging my body of that white gunk often overrides the fact that I KNOW full well that it's a bad idea.

[–]Ryugi 0 points1 point ago

What about when people get "satisfaction" from hurting themselves badly?

Either as adults/masochists or kid like the boy who when he was 3, bit his lip so hard he literally ripped it off, bit deep into his tongue, and they eventually had to remove all his teeth because of his self-biting?

[–]korkow 1 point2 points ago

That's probably more of a genetic mistake/mutation. Although they do exist, these people that really enjoy pain are pretty rare. If they like it too much, like in the case of that 3 year old boy, they're less likely to survive/reproduce if they hurt themselves too severely, so the trait remains fairly uncommon. (With modern medicine, this boy's lip can be surgically repaired. But in nature it could easily have been life threatening, or at least deterred any females from mating with him)

On the other hand, it's pretty darn common for people to experience this "purging" pleasure, because this it's a rather beneficial trait to have.

[–]Ryugi 0 points1 point ago

Indeed, indeed. Thank you for additional considerations.

[–]darwin1859 -5 points-4 points ago

And that's what we can an adaptationist "just so" story.

[–]ZenaLundgren 9 points10 points ago

First thing I thought. Would peel the fuck out of that, free of charge. Don't even care who's attached. Well... within reason-- I mean, I ain't peelin' Newt Gingrich or Ke$ha. Ugh, I really hated typing that name.

[–]Rule_32 9 points10 points ago

I'd peel anything Ke$ha would let me

[–]Eracoy 4 points5 points ago

Her body does have great appeal.

[–]MotherFuckingCupcake 16 points17 points ago

That's a terrible bathing suit. I don't suspect anyone could look good in that.

[–]UglyStupidLumberjack -1 points0 points ago

It really is a lot because of the bathing suit.

[–]cyndikins 0 points1 point ago

Looks nothing like Kesha, looks more like: Mary McCormack

[–]jax9999 2 points3 points ago

and probably many scabs to peel... oozing and non oozing.

[–]DrRedditPhD 1 point2 points ago

You don't have to type the dollar sign. Her first name is actually Kesha.

[–]ZenaLundgren 0 points1 point ago

Yeah, I've typed it once before and got corrected so I was trying to avoid having to rage at some poor twit.

[–]DrRedditPhD 0 points1 point ago

If anyone rages at you for not using the dollar sign, make sure they know that her legal name is Kesha Rose Sebert.

[–]ZenaLundgren 0 points1 point ago

Agghhh... Come on! Now I need to un-know that!

[–]sean150 26 points27 points ago

This photo is from a contest held by Baby Foot. They are a maker of a skin care product that removes callus skin from feet to give them that "baby skin" smooth feel.

[–]mazumi 14 points15 points ago

I need that stuff. NEED.

[–]sean150 11 points12 points ago

You realize if you get it and use it, you're obligated to post photos of the aftermath.

[–]FapFlop 4 points5 points ago

We're holding you to it.

[–]JarlofDenmark 1 point2 points ago

I'm scared of what you'll do with it.

[–]SilverBlooded12 1 point2 points ago

I RES tagged you as "will deliver"

[–]chekkers 5 points6 points ago

I would get that just for the peeling.

[–]CarolynRae 3 points4 points ago

I've used this.

It's fucking amazing.

[–]sean150 2 points3 points ago

The rule applies to all. You've admitted using it, now you must post photos.

[–]Apollos_Anus 3 points4 points ago

I want that but am equally afraid of losing my foot.

[–]sean150 5 points6 points ago

I wouldn't think the anus of a god would need to worry about such things.

[–]Apollos_Anus 2 points3 points ago

Like the rest of Apollo, I must keep up my complexion.

Also, that means I'm an anus with feet.

[–]LauretteOB 0 points1 point ago

I... I want it.

eta: I can see now that when it starts peeling I'll be squealing about it being gross and making my boyfriend look.

[–]vocabulazy 7 points8 points ago

I wanna peel it so bad!

[–]mildly_inappropriate 10 points11 points ago

Looks like a parafin treatment.

For you SAP's these are awesome gifts, women love them. $40-$80 and they actually work.

[–]demonpancake 0 points1 point ago

Exactly my thoughts.

[–]caecilia 0 points1 point ago

Dammit I thought it was skin

[–]Fight4Light 1 point2 points ago

It is skin, mildly_inappropriate is mistaken. It's a foot treatment called Babyfoot.

[–]upvoteforyouhun 0 points1 point ago

YES. They are fantastic. I got my mom a whole spa pedicure treatment for her birthday, and she was scared to go (she had never been). So, I went with her. Now she loves them and goes on her own.

[–]h8bit 4 points5 points ago

I wish that was my foot, I would peel the fuck out of it.

[–]husker_ 2 points3 points ago

The trick is trying to get it all off in a single, huge piece.

[–]Executive_Slave 4 points5 points ago

I'd pick the fuck out of that.

[–]poet_will 2 points3 points ago

Can some one tell me what is going on here? What condition does that person have?

[–]donald20 7 points8 points ago

It may be a peeling foot cream. Notice on the ankles, they 'skin' is more like splotches. The 'skin' is also pretty membranous and uniform. I don't think real dead skin could be as plastic as that.

[–]poet_will 2 points3 points ago

Thanks for the reply. I went to youtube and found a bunch of videos of this stuff. I think it is some kind of callous removal stuff.

[–]kerelberel -1 points0 points ago

callous?

Yes, callous.

It's the result of Baby Foot, an acid foot peel from Japan.

[–]Cok3 0 points1 point ago

[–]CandiAttack 0 points1 point ago

Nope, it's from Japan. There may be other things like this from Australia, but that particular picture is the result of Baby Foot. I apologize for not getting you a link, but it's a little difficult for me to do this on my phone. :/ A google search will do the trick. :)

[–]Cok3 1 point2 points ago*

[–]Newt29er 2 points3 points ago

Ahh, For whatever reason I love the feeling of peeling skin off...

[–]itsmedavid123 2 points3 points ago

I have a story to share that has to do with this skin peeling stuff. Once, I think less than a year ago, I went swimming at my friends house. It was a while since I last went swimming, so we stayed in there for like, 4 hours. Also, it was the middle of summer and I had no sun screen on. When I got out, I felt fine. The next day, it got really bad. The day after that, I went to my aunts house in Arizona, where it was blazing hot. My burn kept getting worse and worse, until it started to form a weird 2nd skin thing over it, it looked like blisters covering all my sunburn on my back. When I returned home, it stopped hurting, but I was left with a shell like structure on my back. It was hard and flaky. I couldn't peel it off because it was on my back, so my sister volunteered to do it. She slowly peeled every little scab piece off, and it felt amazing. All the skin under it felt super soft. The end.

[–]meehan117 4 points5 points ago

That story made me imagine the sensation to the point where I could almost feel it and I now want to go burn my back to shit so I can experience it for real

[–]AnteggWuTang 2 points3 points ago
