there are two sides to every story. the other side to my scenario being OP is a douche.

its also possible its a laid back office. i once worked a job where most people maybe put in three hours of actual work a day. people would literally watch tv at their desk (technically this was ok since it was a website that was focused on television). a co-worker and i watched all of Deadwood Season 1 during a week our boss was out of town. the company founder watched about half of it with us. it was ridiculous.

I think regardless of having a bad boss there's something to be said for trying to do a good job. If you are part of a team it's even more so. While I acknowledge it happens it's not easy to excuse deliberately doing a bad job just because no one is watching.

I'm on reddit while at work, so clearly I'm not suggesting that every second has to be focused like a laser, but I also work from home all hours of the night, so it balances out I figure.

Your point is well taken that there are multiple factors to consider, I just find it difficult to imagine a scenario where I'd want to work with someone who had that reaction.

oh, i agree. alas, here on reddit, we have mostly high school and college kids who have yet to learn this important lesson (not that young people can't have learned this, just in my experience it doesn't happen until somewhere after the age of 25, if you're going to learn it at all).

I have a laid back office, and when superiors aren't here, I can do the things I am supposed to do without interruption. This means it will take me about half the time it would if they were here assigning me extra tasks, be it in my job description, or because they want me to handle them.

I am the sole person in my department, so I am not dragging anyone down or gumming the team element of our business.

when i went back to school i did the bare minimum at work, and generally spent too much time studying at work.

finished school, got a new job i like, and now i bust my butt. because i want to. if my old boss was even remotely competent he would have caught on and told me to step up. but he was a moron.

have you ever been promoted that way? The places I've worked at have had very limited room for promotion. Busting your ass will, at best, give you nicer bonuses at years end. Not worth it IMO.
