Actually, this isn't true at all.

NYC is still over 50% white, and its actually increasing (it used to be much lower) due to gentrification in many areas in Manhattan and especially Brooklyn.

"Minorities" is also code word for "anyone not white". People out themselves using it in that context when they refer to non-whites as "minorities" when they are clearly the majority.

Funny but misleading. I suspect that there is no one group from the pool of "minorities" that is greater than the 20%. If there were more African Americans than whites, then African Americans would be the majority, and "whites" would be one of the minorities. However, since there is more than one category of minority, and no one group exceeds 20%, they remain minorities.

I believe that the word "minority" refers to the race that does not hold political power. Before the civil war, blacks outnumbered whites in many parts of the south, but were still the minorities.

Edit: From Wikipedia: Rather than a relational "social group", as the term would indicate, the term refers to a category that is differentiated and defined by the social majority, that is, those who hold the majority of positions of social power in a society.

In this context minority refers not to the number of people but rather where the POWER is. Thus in South Africa the whites were a small portion of the population but held all the power and so blacks were the minority.
