    I don't know, I think dismissing it as karma mining is an easy and cynical way not to have actual discussions about morality. I don't know why it's worse to karma whore stuff showing the shitty effects of using a picture of a disabled kid as a punchline, and not "hey, this is a reference to a television show a lot of us watched." I know everything doesn't need to be srs bizness, but I think there must be a place for the topic.

    Even if most of it came from sanctimony, it's still more useful than plenty of topics on the site. Anyway, it's interesting to see what kind of topics and arguments reddit employs in its backlashes.

        It's pretty normal, though. Haven't you ever teased someone in real life who you knew you were pissing off, but didn't feel bad until they started crying or something? I realize that's an awful thing to do, but it's something most of us have done at some point in our lives.

        It's "funny" for the same reason racist or sexist jokes are supposed to be funny. Heaven forbid we get into why people make rape jokes. I'm not saying it's okay, but I am saying that it's funny because it's just over the border of being acceptable.

        Looking at it now, I don't think I worded my post as best as I should have. I agree it's normal (and good) to feel bad you realize what you're doing is hurting someone. It's these posts essentially scolding people who were making jokes about it that bugs me.

        May I ask, exactly what derogatory connotations come with the word retarded? It originates from the Latin word tardus which means slow. It seems to me that the only derogatory connotations from the word come from its usage by the ignorant as a derogatory label. But it's also been used by Doctors as a medically valid label without connotation.

        I look at the word "gay" as more analogous than "faggot". Gay people by-in-large have absolutely no problem with the word to describe their sexual preference. The only people who give the word a negative connotation are those who believe that the people to whom the term applies have negative attributes themselves. But that doesn't give the word negative attributes per se.

        I could also carry this over to something like the expressive statement "You're from TEXAS!!" To a Texan that could well be a really positive statement. To an ideological rival from California who's speaking to the Texan, they may be attempting to express a connotative implication that Texans are somehow bad. But that in no way gives the word Texas a derogatory connotation per se. (Or vice versa)
