A subreddit for anything related to games (but not sports). "Related" means that posts must contain gaming-related content in the link/post body, not just a "forced" connection via the title or a caption added to the content.

"Generic" image macros/memes (where the character itself is not related to gaming) like Scumbag Steve, Good Guy Greg, etc. will be removed. Something that "reminds you of a game", or "looks like something from a game" is also not an appropriate submission.

I think mine would be similar but why rake your hands off the keyboard you have to RUN!

[–]taffy15[S] 3 points4 points ago

It made me jump so my hands weren't on the keyboard, my laptop nearly flew off my lap as well. Needless to say, I didn't survive the encounter.

[–]Barkingabel 1 point2 points ago

Next time get into a dark corner and crouch and hide, and whimper hoping it won't see you.

Amnesia isnt even scary.

[–]Daragor -3 points-2 points ago

I don't understand why everyone says this about Amnesia. It's not a scary game :/

[–]Draziil 12 points13 points ago

Because people who play the game and say it's scary actually play it properly. Like it prompts you at the beginning, you don't rambo your way through the areas, mindlessly ignoring the atmosphere and just solving the puzzles. The game's main claim to fame is immersive atmosphere. Put yourself in the helpless shoes of Daniel and play realistically. It is a nerve-wracking experience and extremely fun. Especially at night or in a dark room with a good surround sound system or headphones. Even better if you have some kind of stealthy pet like a cat who enjoys rubbing against your leg while playing

[–]Daragor -2 points-1 points ago

You're assuming how I played the game. I did play with the lights off and with my gaming headset on. It's not a scary game. If you put yourself in the shoes of any character, almost any game will have a more immersive experience. The game should deliver that on its own, it shouldn't be something I should have to "imagine".

[–]Draziil 6 points7 points ago

It's an indy game made by a company who focus on the first person survival horror genre. The fact that it's made to be a horror survival unlike any other is what separates it from games like silent hill or resident evil (both good). The vast majority of people who have played it have found it very fun and incredibly scary. Just because a few people claim it isn't scary, doesn't stop the game from being a horror game. Anyone can claim a game is not what it's supposed to deliver. Imagination is one of the biggest assets to a virtual exerience. Yes, games should deliver good gameplay on their own, but as with movies, if you just sit there and dissect the movie bit by bit while watching, it won't be as enjoyable.

[–]Daragor -5 points-4 points ago*

I didn't dissect it bit by bit. It isn't scary and everyone freaks out about how scary it is all the time. It's a horror game, and a mediocre one at best in my opinion. I just don't get why people get so scared while playing this game.

I didn't have to dissect Resident Evil or Silent Hill while playing through those games, and they had a lot of frightening moments. There are times in those games where you feel helpless as the character, but it's done in a much better way. There's also actually dialogue and a good story to attach you to the characters. Amnesia throws you in a box and has triggers setup to open and close doors in front of you, then shows you glimpses of very blocky and muddy looking monsters. The idea of the darkness driving you crazy is a cool concept, but that's the one trick pony the game has. The sound effects are very well done, but imo it has to match the feel of the game. The engine they used just doesn't deliver, and I feel like I'm playing something meant for the PS2. Other than that, you just run from every enemy you come across. There's no progression, and there's no "wow factor" beyond the first encounter. Sorry, but so many people seem like pussies when they say how scared they are of Amnesia.

Edit: to clarify

[–]Draziil 6 points7 points ago

I guess most people who find it scary want to be scared by it, so they psyche themselves up for it to be enjoyable. I havn't beaten the game yet and I was only able to play for 30-45 minutes at a time before being too shaky to keep going. Alternatively, I know full well I could play the game without being startled or scared at anything, and just see the game as another puzzle game with some cheap gimmicks. It all depends on the player's perspective and mindset. It's easier to enjoy the game for what it has and the game's intention if you play it with the mindset it's meant for. The helplessness of silent hill and resident evil is profoundly stronger in Amnesia because insted of weapons or safe areas or even an idea of what you're doing, you're "thrown into a box" with no idea who you are or what you're doing, wandering an abandoned castle with no way to defend yourself and everything is out to kill you. There are no safe zones and you don't have anything on screen to distract you from the immersiveness of the gameplay like healthbars, ammo counters, minimap, objectives or anything. All that is in the pause menu and the point of Amnesia is to discover your past, read the journals which DO have a good story for the characters, it's just done through internal monologue and short flashbacks. Amnesia is great because it knows that something STAYS scary the less you look at it. Zombies and mutants and nightmarish creatures become boring after the 100th time I've seen them in your typical horror survival, but because Amnesia plays in such a way that you become insane by looking at the "blocky muddy monsters", it retains the unknown horror element.

I guess it just depends on personal taste, but I find it really tense and genuinely terrifying and I am absolutely loving it so far.

[–]tumescentpie 1 point2 points ago

I didn't play it but I watched day9 play a lot of it, and I just felt like it was bland. It seems very repetitive and I don't understand the appeal. I feel like the powerlessness of the character needs to have more to it than just being an observer.

[–]Archemorus 1 point2 points ago

Because watching an stream of somebody else playing an scary game is like watching a movie where the actors are watching an scary movie, you laugh at their reactions. You have to play it to decide whether it's "bland" or not.

[–]tumescentpie -1 points0 points ago

Not exactly true. I am a pretty smart guy and can make an analysis of content based on watching a video of the game just as easily as playing the game.

For instance watching a play through video of portal 2 would let me know quite a bit about the game even if I had never played a single level.

[–]Archemorus 0 points1 point ago

Well, reading a book about a mountain can give you the feeling that you are in a mountain...yet you are not.

[–]MiNDTRyX 5 points6 points ago

OK like really man?

Your sounding kinda pathetic now. OOOOHHHH look at me! I'm a bug boy, I didn't get scared....

OK FINE we get it you didn't get scared. Drop the Fking subject. You are one guy amongst THOUSANDS who found it scary.

BIG WHOOP you didn't get scared. Honestly no one even really cares. Don't bash on the game for no reason.

Seriously next time. Try not doing something like this.

Also before you say that I was just voicing my opinion. You should've stopped a lot sooner then. You dragged it out way too far

[–]Daragor 1 point2 points ago

I feel like I just told a bunch of 9 year olds at a camp fire that ghosts don't exist, and you're all just going "nu uhhhh". Grow up.

[–]MiNDTRyX 0 points1 point ago

not really no

[–]damnshoes 0 points1 point ago

You're a robot!

It is related, I was sharing my thoughts and reaction to the game with the aid of this gif.
