People hating on the truth. Maybe we'll see Luongo in TO next year.

[–]CecilThunder 16 points17 points ago

He would make a great fit there. Would never have to worry about falling apart in the playoffs.

[–]caprincrash 0 points1 point ago

No he wouldn't, he needs to go to a small market team like Tampa or Florida. The constant media pressure and bullshit fans booing him even though a lot of the time it was the team in front of him playing bad is not going to get any better in a place like Toronto. He goes to a quieter market where there is less pressure on him and he will find his confidence and be a dominate goalie for the next 3-4 years (then what you do with his contract for the next ~10 years I don't know).

Edit: noticed the joke at the end.

[–]tronfonne 0 points1 point ago

Schneiders worth more, but Vancouverites are horrible to Luongo so they don't deserve him.

For those considering Tribes, this may help you decide if its your style or not. It feels somewhat similar to Halo, but it has mechanics that are different than any other FPS. In terms of gamestyle, it was essentially an offshoot for the players who liked Unreal's gameplay during early FPS', with some unique aspects like lightning fast reflexes, coupled with difficult shooting mechanics, which make it fast to move, slow to shoot. Players who prefer instant kill matches with tight corridors and small maps will dislike Tribes. Players who want open maps with little fancy environments, but prefer games with vehicles, a variety of classes, and intense teamplay will gravitate to this game. What you have to realize is that Tribes is at it's 4th game in the series, and each has brought a lot of changes to it, so its different than COD in that aspect where there have been infinite "minor" changes that have not affected the game much. You'll see a lot of new stuff, some old, and some "HOLY CRAP" ideas that should keep you interested. Oh yea .. and it's free.

[–]Soundtoxin 2 points3 points ago

I love Tribes Ascend. I was already familiar with most of the game mechanics from Fallen Empire: Legions, so it came naturally to me.

[–]Chur 3 points4 points ago

Reminds me of this old .GIF

[–]Stevoisiak 11 points12 points ago

I play Tribes, and I don't get this.

[–]CWGM 2 points3 points ago

Really? I thought it'd be obvious to anyone, even people who haven't played tribes.

The gif suggests that when a group of friends are playing tribes (in the same room), if some friends end up on the opposite team and start winning, they will start to rub their victory in your face. Like the green guys and the hockey player in the gif.

Hope that clarified it for you!

[–]devinlucifer 10 points11 points ago

What is Tribes? This post leaves me mildly interested in it.

[–]SoepWal 73 points74 points ago

A free to play FPS game where you zip around at high speeds with jetpacks and no friction.

It's pretty fun, but it's bloody difficult to learn to aim. It's like trying to shoot a passing bird with a crossbow while iceskating, and then Diamond Sword wins and everyone says Shazbot.

It's crazy fun/addictive, would recommend.

[–]devinlucifer 10 points11 points ago

I am more interested now. How can I go about playing Tribes?

Edit: Also I play CS:S religiously so would I have an easier time learning to aim?

[–]socklesshobo9 26 points27 points ago

Just started playing this game, and I am pretty addicted.

Good Guy Tribesman; posts his referral link with an alternative so there's no pressure.

[–]ScreamingHawk 1 point2 points ago

Damn I just signed up. Would have used your link if I saw it earlier.

[–][deleted] 1 point2 points ago

Lucky bastard, I've been trying to get referrals and with a total lack of success.

[–]terreann 4 points5 points ago

Aiming really isn't that big of a deal. I hardly played any fps's before tribes, except for occasionally playing the "fps that shall not be named." I got shooting down pretty well after my second or third game. If you watch a video or two of someone playing the game, you can see what they do, and it makes it a ton easier. Also, if since you're probably more used to guns that you can actually aim, vs. guns that shoot lobbing rounds, I'd suggest the soldier class. (One of the 3 classes you start out with.) He has medium speed and jetpack energy, and has a machine gun primary, and grenade launcher thingy secondary. Definitely test out the other two, but that one is probably the easiest to start out with.

TL;DR: Aiming isn't too bad. If you want, watch a gameplay video to help visualize. Try out the Soldier class.

[–]SoepWal 2 points3 points ago

I found juggernaut to be the easiest in newbie games.

Unfortunately, after the first few games, people seem to figure out to get out of the way when you fire your mortar, so the kills stop raining. :<

[–]jumpjumpdie 1 point2 points ago

The problem is, people fall back on Jugg as a crutch it seems. So you end up with a team with like 6 juggs on it. Becomes very frustrating if you are a pathfinder or soldier.

[–]SoepWal 2 points3 points ago

Yeah, I'm trying to branch out, but when I play soldier I am basically useless. Fire 46 bullets, maybe two of them actually hit, unless it's an indoor fight. And it's never an indoor fight.

Sentinel is fun but I am about as useful as a screen door on a submarine, considering my accuracy with the sniper is <5% on skiing targets.

[–]jumpjumpdie 1 point2 points ago

The sniper is almost useless for me. I won't lie, the game is HARD. It's hard to aim effectively with any class. I usually play the pathfinder but I am shying away from it now because of how weak they are compared to juggs. I come up against a jugg and can totally romp him, hitting him like 5 times. He will then get 1 lucky shot and it's over, I die in one hit. It's just fucking silly. I have been playing the soldier more lately.

[–]SoepWal 1 point2 points ago

Well, you're not really there to duel juggs as a pathfinder. As a pathfinder, you should either be yoinking the flag, or chasing down the enemy with the flag (who is probably a pathfinder too) to gank him.

If you're after dueling with a spinfusor, the soldiers spinfusor actually does more damage I think, so that might be to your taste?

I've actually had the opposite transformation. I played juggernaut for a long while, then tried pathfinder out last night and loved it. Kills were less common, but more important. It's a little satisfying to blow someone up with a mortar... extremely satisfying to drop down on the enemy flag carrier, kill them, and return the flag so that your team scores.

Or, yknow, to actually capture the flag yourself. Great feeling.

[–]jumpjumpdie 1 point2 points ago

Yeah I agree with that. But sometimes you get caught alone and it kinda sucks. And the over abuse of the jugg really is a problem sometimes.

[–]chain83 0 points1 point ago

Unlock the spinfusor for soldier. Helps when you get rid of that rifle-thing... :) There was some website to sign up to get a free unlock code for that. Look for it, it might still be around?

[–]SoepWal 0 points1 point ago

I got that, but I feel like if I am relying on the spinfusor I should just play pathfinder?

I dunno. I need to learn to hit with automatics at -some- point...

[–]chain83 2 points3 points ago

Pathfinder is intended for moving around quickly to capture the flag (or to make enemy flagbearer drop yours by using those magic grenades), and isn't as good for general fighting as e.g. the soldier.

Depending on what class/weapon you prefer you don't really have to learn to use automatics. I believe spinfusor is an important weapon to master in this game (but I have not played that much).

Note: The different spinfusors (for different classes) do different damage.

[–]frankster 0 points1 point ago

jugg seems slightly op tbh with its higher dmg / aoe spinfusor.

[–]eZek0 9 points10 points ago

https://account.hirezstudios.com/tribesascend/

The thing with CS:S is all weapons are hitscan-- the bullet travels instantaneously to its target. Almost everything in Tribes takes some time to travel. If you were familiar with the rocker launcher from Quake you'd be more at home.

[–]DoctorShapes 5 points6 points ago

If you are very good at CS:S you might like the sentinel class. (sniping)

[–]wolfbite 3 points4 points ago

The SNT class is a defense class. when I started playing it i was confused as I wanted to 1 hit kill everything. There is a trick to playing this class, go after the flag carrier. Your main job is to sit on the hill and pick off the flag carriers as they come to get your flag. You are also there to spot for the Heavy on the Flag (main guy standing on the flag to keep others from getting it, he is very vulnerable) and you can take pot shots at anyone around to lower their health. Head shots do not count. I was upset about this at first but the more you play against a SNT you will understand why, they are incredibly powerful and can kill from the spawn.

TL:DR, If you see someone going for the flag shoot them. If someone gets the flag they are your main goal and should be the only thing you are shooting at. Shoot Bitches Get Money

[–]Kirkreng 1 point2 points ago

Sniping in Tribes is so much harder though. Your gun doesn't 1 hit kill most classes and hitting fast moving enemies isn't the easiest thing either.

[–]chain83 4 points5 points ago

Not just fast, 100-200 kph, and you do a fraction of their health per hit (especially on the heavy classes). -.- Oh how I regret unlocking that class... :P

[–]Swede_ 1 point2 points ago

100-200 Sanics? VGTB

[–]wrathofg0d 2 points3 points ago

neither rifle can 1-hit kill ANY class at a full charge

i would love some sort of drop-off sniper weapon (ala the huntsman from tf2) that will at least 1-shot lights. you'd almost never hit anything, but fuck it.

[–]GeneraLeeStoned 0 points1 point ago

as an original tribes player, im very confused about this "ascend" nonsense. that being said, I will be downloading it tomorrow

[–]Zarrthon 12 points13 points ago

In Tribes most of the weapons are fairly slow moving. Combine that with how fast you move, and it can be quite tricky to hit people. So no. Playing counter strike won't help you much unfortunately. However you should still give it a go! You can download it from here. SHAZBOT!

[–]Volvaux 5 points6 points ago

Not to be a dick or anything, but if you were GOING FAST when you were trying to fire your weapons, your shots also GO FAST. Clearly, you were TOO SLOW.

[–]Sebaceous_Sebacious 2 points3 points ago

If you're any good at scouts-n'-knives you should unlock the sentinel as soon as possible. It's amazing how much of a skill advantage a decade of CS sniping will give you.

[–]SoepWal 6 points7 points ago

Go here, make an account and install the game, it's a pretty quick download.

Playing CS:S will help you with some weapons, but not others.

There are basically three types of weapons that I'm aware of.

'Hitscan' weapons are fairly simple. You click on the enemy, they take damage, it's like most FPS. If you're really good at aiming in typical FPS you'll be really good with these.

Then you have varying 'projectile' weapons. Some (like the soldiers assault rifle, I think) fire pretty fast projectiles so you only have to lead a little.

Others are trickier. Lots of classes use weapons that fire slow, exploding projectiles, so you have to learn to lead your targets. Some of the weapons are effected by gravity so you also have to account for arcs... (As a newbie, I find these easier to hit with thanks to the splash damage. YMMV if you're good at typical FPS aim.)

Also, it's a little trickier to aim because you're probably moving very fast. You hold spacebar to 'ski', eliminating friction, which means you might be moving at 150kph north, while facing east and firing, and it does take a bit of getting used to.

Here is an example of what I mean by skiing.. it's unlike anything I've seen in other FPS.

tl;dr: You'll probably be better at aiming than I am, but I feel like tribes has way more factors to focus on while aiming than most games. Shooting a guy in a hallway and shooting a guy flying past you at 250KPH while you're moving just as fast in a completely different direction are hard to compare.

[–]devinlucifer 5 points6 points ago

So "skiing" in Tribes is like "surfing" In CS:S and TF2?

[–]Grizzalbee 8 points9 points ago

Skiing is required in tribes. If you're not moving fast, you're dead already.

[–]Anon159023 3 points4 points ago

Unless you are defending the flag.

[–]Parnass 2 points3 points ago

superheavy doombringer on flag reporting in. and all the pth say VGS as they slam into my forcefields.

[–]Anon159023 0 points1 point ago

Good job, forcefields are the best.

(For those who don't know when you pass through an enemy force-field it does damage based on your speed.)

[–]ShAd0wS 2 points3 points ago

Surfing is mostly a gimmick in CS:S (I've played for 7 years competitively and still haven't bothered learning). Skiing IS tribes. Think a TF2 scout with a jetpack and no friction.

[–][deleted] ago

[deleted]

[–]devinlucifer 1 point2 points ago

What is/are Tinywings?

[–]marcus_s123 1 point2 points ago

Its a non hitscan game so you have to predict where they're going to land or get a lucky midair with most of the weapons.

[–]ShAd0wS 1 point2 points ago

CS:S is my main FPS and I've played it for 7 years including leagues, a little bit of it transfers over, but most of the weapons worth using have significant lag time so it doesn't really translate. I dominated the first couple levels but then I started to get put with people who have been playing longer, and only did average - above average most of the time. Its fun, but I'm not playing it currently because its different enough from css where it screws up my aim and I want to be ready for CS:GO.

[–]LymphaticHeaddress 2 points3 points ago

The aiming in Tribes requires expert 'leading' ability, as in shooting where they're going to be instead of where they are, and it is incredibly frustrating sometimes. Even machine guns require some leading, though they are easier. Most people try to have explosive weapons explode near a person when they are about to hit the ground from lack of jet pack fuel...

TL;DR: probably not. Try the game. It's fun

[–]Naskin 0 points1 point ago

It'll be a completely new experience for you. Projectiles actually follow the rules of physics, so if you are skiing perpendicular to where you're aiming, your projectiles will move sideways at the same speed you are. You need to adjust your aim accordingly; it's very difficult to master.

[–]notreefitty 0 points1 point ago

If you played CS:S, it's a lot like aiming nades. You should be able to adjust to firing a thumper easily. If you've ever ski'd in cs, it's somewhat similar in tribes: you gain momentum on downward slopes, jetpack up slopes to keep your speed and go right back down again. The result is flying through terrain at ridiculous speeds, and eventually, nailing ridiculous shots on your opponents for enjoyment, points and style points.

[–]terreann 4 points5 points ago

It's not nearly as difficult as you made it sound. Stop scaring people. =P

[–]SoepWal 4 points5 points ago

Yes it is. :<

I'd kill to be able to land 20% of my bullets.

[–]WanderingSpaceHopper 1 point2 points ago

Stop shooting your spinfusor at targets in mid-air.

[–]chrisrobin 1 point2 points ago

On this note I want to say that there is nothing like the feeling of judging a fusion mortar correctly and having the enemy just glide right over it the very moment it explodes. It's euphoric.

[–]Grakos 6 points7 points ago

Kills in that game can be ridiculous, where you ski up and down cliffs getting to maximum speed, then firing an anticipating shot at an enemy which takes 5 seconds but hits him dead on. Killing a friend while they are in the same room no doubt leads to taunting like in the gif.

[–]jaredanand 1 point2 points ago

[–]usernameTROLL 1 point2 points ago

Give some love to the Van-City Green Men!!

[–]DrMnhttn 1 point2 points ago

[–]qmynd 1 point2 points ago

No one plays tribes.--> Reddit posts pick of hockey guys with tribes mask supper imposed over head. --> Tribes now 5th most played game on reddit

[–]SpiritHeretic 0 points1 point ago

I'm pretty sure Tribes: Ascend made it popular.

[–]qmynd 0 points1 point ago

No doubt, I just found it funny that a couple days ago I never saw anything about tribes on reddit and then yesterday there was this post and it was the 5th most played game.

That dude sulking there describes my situation perfectly.

Fuck this game in the ass.

[–]Onatu 0 points1 point ago

I got Tribes: Ascend just a week ago and I'm loving it so far. Like everyone has said though, it's a pain to aim just right since everything is zipping around almost faster than can be dealt with.

I love this .gif though. Sadly none of my friends play Tribes (yet...I've been working to get them to download it, or at least those that can). I hope this .gif proves to be true when the time comes.

Thank you for posting this to r/gaming, and therefore ending up on my front page. Tribes was the first FPS I ever got into, but I have not played in over a decade. The last time I played was on windows 98.
Back then, the best feeling in the world was hitting someone with your blue disk as you were flying past each other in some sort of crazy duel. It was so incredibly satisfying.
I had no idea that there was a new game. I will install now.
THANK YOU.

Started playing around December and before that played a lot of the ps2 game way back. Doesn't quite feel like the old game because there were only 3 classes and vehicles were more important

[–]WiredEarp 1 point2 points ago

In the original, you made your own classes by mixing up your armor and selections. That was just one of the cool things.
