Flight of the Conchords was a great show, wish it didn't end.

[–]ErnestMorrow 19 points20 points ago

They felt that the quality of the show and songs was deteriorating because of the rushed production. I loved the show and the band, but I'd much rather have 2 great seasons that I can always remember as terrific than 6 seasons and a movie that started out good but turned to shit.

[–]TheThirdConchord 9 points10 points ago

They ARE making a movie!

[–]gregsaw 2 points3 points ago

Well, the songs and the show were deteriorating in the second season. I'm glad they realized it, but I wish they would have either done fewer episodes per season or more time between seasons. That first season of FotC was magical

[–]psilokan 1 point2 points ago

I would say they had one great season, followed by another not so great season.

[–]sage_of_majic 22 points23 points ago

[–]MadHiggins 94 points95 points ago

mother fucker this is just like arguing with my brother. he'll hurl mean spirited shit at me and if i respond with even an inkling of the same tone he'll flip the shit out. BONUS POINTS! sometimes weeks later i'll say the same thing to him that he originally said to me and he'll act like it's the most terrible thing you could possibly say to a person and be horribly offended, not remembering that he said the exact same thing to me. fuck, now i'm angry thinking about this.

[–]stemgang 75 points76 points ago

Ah sibling abuse, the most acceptable kind of domestic violence.

[–]doctorcrass 39 points40 points ago

it's only abuse if they don't fight back.

[–]Scriptonaut 14 points15 points ago

As somebody who grew up with a brother, beat his ass, this is what you're supposed to do.

[–]MadHiggins 2 points3 points ago

i am now like 3 inches taller than my brother, so the physical superiority is now in my favor. so a beat down is a viable tactic.

[–]GearPrimer 4 points5 points ago

Those 3 inches have to make you at least twice as good of a fighter, for sure.

[–]KindBass 5 points6 points ago

Be careful - the older brother always wins.

[–]andreylosev 3 points4 points ago

I'm an older brother and can attest to this.

[–]oerich 1 point2 points ago

Record every argument you have with him for evidence. Not only can you prove what he said to you, but you can also compare decibels and scientifically prove that he is yelling louder.

[–]U2_is_gay 1 point2 points ago

I do this to people sometimes but I'm in full troll mode when I do it. Only works if you don't break character.

[–]CaptnAwesomeGuy 1 point2 points ago

Then fuck you. You think I'm joking.

[–]walshy420 39 points40 points ago

just read this in a kiwi accent

[–]Sir_Walken 80 points81 points ago

Kiwis don't have accents. We speak normally, the rest of the world speaks weird.

[–][deleted] 69 points70 points ago

Is this the NZ circlejerk? I too am from there. Here is my woolen passport. Upsheep to the left.

[–][deleted] 1 point2 points ago

Up sheep alright.

[–]nothefuzz 8 points9 points ago

True dat! Reminds me when I was in Las Vegas with my ex. She's like "Is this the check in line?" to a group of girls, and they're like "The chicken line??". Many lols were had.

[–]_meraxes 1 point2 points ago

I work in a grooming studio in NZ. I recently asked an american customer if he had left his dog's lead with us. I couldn't get him to understand me at all - had to switch to the word 'leash' and really annunciate.

We do mumble.

Also check-in line (in kiwi) sounds identical to chicken line (in Australian)

[–]nothefuzz 13 points14 points ago

I just read this in a faked kiwi accent. Sounds Australian to me sorry!

[–]nothefuzz 14 points15 points ago

That's the trouble except they're totally different. They're like [high-pitched] "where's the car" and we're like [normal voice] "Where's the car." Edit. Oh that was a link to my joke here haha. Oops.

[–]ENKC 13 points14 points ago

As an Australian with a Kiwi mother, they do sound very different.

[–]the_walrus_was_ringo 8 points9 points ago

Completely different. It's like comparing Scottish and English accents.

[–]ENKC 10 points11 points ago

Scottish and Irish would strike me as a more obvious comparison. They're clearly different but still hard to discern for people unaccustomed to them.

[–]nothefuzz 6 points7 points ago

Say "where's the car"!! Another one! Say "Fush and Chups"! That's how we say it here in Noo Zelin!

[–]lud1120 4 points5 points ago*

Isn't New Zealand the most "English" country outside of UK?

[–]ENKC 2 points3 points ago

Indisputably. Christchurch has been called "more English than England".

[–]MewsClues 3 points4 points ago

Yeah, it's just a hole in the ground.

[–]yogurt123 1 point2 points ago

Too soon

[–]walshy420 2 points3 points ago

damn right you're sorry! haha jk

[–]caligula213 12 points13 points ago

So did i! But then being a kiwi i read most things in a kiwi accent.

[–]theguy0075 3 points4 points ago

I just read your username in a kiwi accent.

[–]mattindustries 1 point2 points ago

Can I eat you?

[–]Ghee_Buttersnaps_ 1 point2 points ago

[–]MrBeg1ner 3 points4 points ago

Does every French class watch that?

[–]MarinatedSandwich 5 points6 points ago

ahh flight of the conchords.... boy do I miss them.

[–]Eat_Every_Vegan 2 points3 points ago

They're on tour right now.

gaslighting

[–]ThJ 27 points28 points ago*

Am I allowed to disagree with gaslighting, in the sense it's typically used these days, or will the hive mind eat me up? I mean, here's where the term comes from:

The term "gaslighting" comes from the play Gas Light and its film adaptations. In those works a character uses a variety of tricks to convince his spouse that she is crazy, so that she won't be believed when she reports strange things that are genuinely occurring, including the dimming of the gas lamps in the house (which happens when her husband turns on the normally unused gas lamps in the attic to conduct clandestine activities there). Since then, it has become a colloquial expression that is now also used in clinical and research literature.

The sense many people seem to use it in is something akin to "I'm entitled to act offended at what you said, even if there was no malicious intent."

I used to have this online friend from the States. She was cool. Then, one evening, she went off on a rant against me, and accused me of gaslighting, and being a sexist. During the ensuing argument, it came up that she'd been reading a lot of feminist and transgender books. I don't know if this is relevant, but I got the feeling that she had all this pent up anger against men from reading these stories of women suffering. Apparently, I'd been hurting her feelings for a long time. I had, however, heard absolutely nothing about that until this particular evening.

One of the things I said that had triggered it was apparently that I had expressed some surprise previously toward her being a gamer, and enjoying a game like Minecraft on top of that. Apparently, it was bad of me to act pleasantly surprised. She told me that she interpreted the reaction as "But, you're a girl. This makes no sense!". Attempting to clear up the misunderstanding lead nowhere. I had already been judged and sentenced.

There was another thing she pointed out as insensitive: There had been a lighthearted conversation, and I had jocularly suggested she solve a (practical) problem by means of masturbation. This happened shortly after she had pasted some amusing chat logs about penises, so I felt I was on safe ground with this kind of joke. This turned out to not be the case. I had verbally violated her by cracking a joke involving her body. No male in my friend circle would have lifted an eyebrow at such a joke, and here comes someone who insists that I treat girls differently from boys in one situation (dirty jokes) but not the other (gender roles).

When I told her that I thought she was overreacting, she pulled out articles on male privilege and gaslighting, and proceeded to accuse me of doing those things.

I don't know if this is my Asperger's syndrome talking, but aren't her reactions completely unreasonable?

TL;DR: Girl accuses me of being an insensitive sexist. I feel unfairly accused. She then accuses me of gaslighting. What the hell?

[–]bookwench 20 points21 points ago

Without knowing the social context - even with your description - I can't make a judgement. I'd say probably, seems like she might have been unreasonable given your description. But reasonable can have various meanings for various people.

What's difficult is when someone's definition of reasonable changes - when they think something's ok, and suddenly change the settings on you. That's tough to take. And it happens a lot in teenaged and 20-something years, as people try and decide who they're going to be, figure out who they are. Sometimes girls feel a lot of pressure to be one of the guys and laugh at stuff that makes them uncomfortable, and then they finally crack and go the other extreme, and that can be really awkward for the guys who've thought she was totally cool with all that stuff. And then it causes problems with other girls who really are cool with it because the guys assign the backlash to the entire female gender instead of the individual... I got the second half of this more than once when guys I'd worked with had been working with a lazy person who happened to be female, so they thought "oh, all girls are lazy". Pissed me off to no end.

[–]icantsurf 32 points33 points ago

YEAH OP YOU'RE A BAD GUY

[–]dzim 43 points44 points ago

You're overreacting. Just calm down.

[–]Fauster 23 points24 points ago

I met a girl at a bar; in the course of the conversation I mentioned that I thought people from the East Coast were easily offended. She gave me an indignant look and suddenly shouted:

"I'm from the East Coast and you just offended ME!"

[–]dzim 9 points10 points ago

I live on the East Coast and I can confirm that people from the East Coast are easily offended. Hopefully you didn't buy her too many drinks.

[–][deleted] 1 point2 points ago

So it's unreasonable to point out when someone is being unreasonable? Seems unreasonable.

[–]bookwench 1 point2 points ago

I wonder how effective it is to point out when someone's being unreasonable? I mean, if they're being unreasonable - if they're being extreme - is just saying "hey, you're going a little overboard here" going to make any impact at all? Has it ever worked?

[–]lobehold 1 point2 points ago

Wrong.

Gaslighting is a borrowed term, where in the clinical sense means some sort of manipulative behaviour is involved.

Then some internet feminist decided that it's a great label to apply to any remark towards a emotional unstable women, whether said unstability was manipulated or self-manifest.

Which leads to arguably greatest enemy of feminism - over-antagonization.

If you label everyone an enemy, then you will have no friends.

[–]RoflCopter4 63 points64 points ago

Unless you win.

-USA

[–]heatdeath 6 points7 points ago

The US has more friends than anyone.

[–]safariplanet 9 points10 points ago

He has an opinion...

but he also said "unstability".

Null vote.

[–]goose722 3 points4 points ago

When such emotional remarks are used in the way that the above poster is implying, it is gaslighting. When people trivialize other people's true emotions by telling them that they are overreacting or that they're too sensitive, it totally is gaslighting. It happens with men too - men are just as often criticized for having emotions in general, and when their friends or even significant others tell them "oh, you're such a sissy" or "stop being a pussy" it makes them think that their emotions don't count or that they shouldn't be having them. That's a form of gaslighting, too.

[–]bookwench 35 points36 points ago

Right! Except wrong, because it's a well-known tactic in social manipulation. The term might be new, the idea is pretty dang old. Its current use & discussion involves men feeling threatened and using it as the arbiters of social norms for women, but it's been used by women against women, by men against men, etc - throughout history. Hell, I bet when we translate dolphin squeaks we they do the same thing.

And this comment - that someone's reaction is too extreme - is a common example of it. It's not always an example of it, but it definitely stands as one of the classics.

[–]DrDragun 6 points7 points ago

In OP's case I believe it is straightforward observation, not gaslighting. Gaslighting entails an intent to manipulate which is different from simply observing what my honest perception of her behavior is. I'm not allowed to make an honest comment on her inappropriate behavior? There is no deception. The entire world has not colluded to create a misperception in her psyche that she is not normal. She's just acting like a stubborn ass and I'm calling her on it. I would do the same to any friend who kept trying to deflect and avoid the topic by manufacturing affronts at everything.

[–]goose722 2 points3 points ago

it's not necessarily an intent to maniuplate - many people gaslight by just following certain social expectations. for example - It's expected of men to express few, if any, emotions, and when people trivialize those emotions by telling them they're a pussy or calling them oversensitive, they begin to really wonder if they should be having those emotions at all - wondering if they are too sensitive or if they are a coward, even if they aren't.

If the other person is expressing their true feelings, i think it's bad to tell them that their emotions don't count by saying something like "oh, you're overracting." it instills doubt and makes them feel trivialized.

What you're describing at the end of your comment is different, though.

[–]xekno 1 point2 points ago

What if it is of the second person's opinion that the first IS indeed overreacting. Should they simply remain silent? Are they always wrong to comment?

Now, if the intent is to manipulate the other person, then sure, it is gaslighting. But if you aren't trying to manipulate someone, and if you genuinely think they are overreacting, why is that wrong? To dismiss their opinion (that someone is overreacting) is indeed gaslighting by your own definition that it does not require intent to manipulate.

[–]FlaviaTitus 8 points9 points ago

"Don't be so defensive!!"

Argh! How to answer that one?

[–]marievska 9 points10 points ago

Either you concede that you're defensive, or you try arguing against it, which proves that you're defensive. You can't win.

[–]boondockpimp 2 points3 points ago

"You don't have to raise your voice!"

If they respond that they aren't, then you tell them not to be defensive.

[–]vcity 7 points8 points ago

Be offensive; punch them in the face.

[–]bananarama123 1 point2 points ago

Point out that they are gas lighting you and that it's an immature way to conduct an argument and that you'll be back when they are ready to have an adult conversation.
