I'm Sure This Happens To Other People (i.imgur.com)

I've got hundreds of them. They just come to me at random times and I always grab my head and shout fuck. edit: i'm so glad i'm not alone on that one. I lie and say i have mild turrets. shameful.
[–]KazMux 249 points250 points251 points 5 months ago
Then you realize you're sitting on a crowded bus and everyone turns around to look at you.
Just one more moment to add to the list..
[–]trytofindascreenname 125 points126 points127 points 5 months ago
Woah, so it happens to other people too? I almost always have the urge to say something out loud when I think of an embarrassing moment.
[–]slenski 89 points90 points91 points 5 months ago*
Oh my god yes! Whenever I think of something embarrassing or when I fucked up I always yell "Shit!" or "Fuck!" or just do some high-pitched noise, or a loud groan. Even if it's shit that happened months/years ago.
Edit: I guess it's a natural way of distracting yourself from the memory, so you snap out of that "embarrassed" feeling?
[–]cyborgx7 60 points61 points62 points 5 months ago
Wow, it feels great to know that I'm not the only one.
[–][deleted] 38 points39 points40 points 5 months ago
I do this too and I always wondered if maybe it meant I was crazy.
[–]DizzyMarkFace 33 points34 points35 points 5 months ago*
Me too, I pretty much facepalm and sometimes there's people around me asking whats the matter, I say nothing, as it's usually something from as many as 10 years ago they don't even know about. Usually something pretty cringeworthy and thank god I can't remember any right now. Unfortunately scumbag brain will surely give me a whole list come bedtime tonight.
Although there's 3 moments I can actually think of I'd be willing tro share, all involving animals, if anyone want to hear them.
[–]zergling50 19 points20 points21 points 5 months ago
Thank god I'm not the only one who does this! Thank you reddit!
[–]YvesSch 20 points21 points22 points 5 months ago
Does it bother anyone to think you may actually be the only one who really does this, and everyone else is just joking?
[–]entist 11 points12 points13 points 5 months ago
I used to feel that way about my friends and that I might be mentally challenged. I read somewhere that people who are disabled don't KNOW they are disabled, and I convinced myself that I was disabled and that my friends were just being super nice to me so that I wouldn't find out.
Turns out I'm just weird. :)
[–]zergling50 1 point2 points3 points 5 months ago
Oh no!! I'm the only one!! Why reddit??!!
[–]DizzyMarkFace 6 points7 points8 points 5 months ago
I think I was about 12 or 13 at the time, my sister used to have a pair of gerbils, one died, she left home, the other one stayed at home, we used to let it run around the floor in the front room as it liked, it was quite tame. One day I walked in the front room and it came from nowhere darting across the floor and as I put my foot down I accidentelly caught it and stood on its head. I didn't put my actual weight on it or I'd have crushed it like a grape I pulled back realising. But it was enough that it was writhing on its back in agony. I scooped it up in a towel and ran into the kitchen and held it under a tap as blood was pouring out its mouth but it stopped wriggling within moments, dead within about 20 seconds of it happening.
I'd done worse when I was younger still, when 6 or 7, played throw and catch with one of my sisters guinea pigs, where I failed to catch it and it hit the floor more often, it would make a terrifying squeal as it was in air, I left it alone when I noticed it was eventually limping really badly and later on found out it had died and my sister was crying her eyes out. We had this little funeral like thing where the family gathered around and she buried it in the back garden in a pink box which was excruciating. I don't know what posessed me to this day or whether I can use age as an excuse.
When I was around 15 a homing pigeon landed in the garden, it was tired out and lost, gave it something to eat and drink, got a basket with a blanket in, put the pigeon inside it and put the basket inside the garage for the night as it had gone to sleep. Next morning, went in the garage to let it out, the basket and lid was nocked over on the floor, with a decapitated pigeon on the floor next to some entrails with its head. Assumed a must've fox managed to get in through a gap in the garage door, until then I thought animals always killed for food but it had just ripped its head off and left it. I facepalm over this as pigeon trusted me to keep it safe and I didn't realise how important it was to make sure the area was completely secure.
[–]hope_full_ 2 points3 points4 points 5 months ago
Everything you touch dies!
[–]DizzyMarkFace 2 points3 points4 points 5 months ago
You may have a point, me and my sister once both won a goldfish at the fairground once. We took them home and put them in the pond in the back garden. They did ok until a heron ate them.
[–]elukebrown 1 point2 points3 points 5 months ago
Is this the general theme of your ruminations or did you just have an animal night tonight?
I think it's just that I love animals so they have a tendency to stick guilt wise.
I could say a lot of other things but there's at least one person who knows me in real life from my reddit account.
[–]irnec 8 points9 points10 points 5 months ago
I also do this.
It's not that unusual apparently. yay.
[–]GlennBecksChalkboard 1 point2 points3 points 5 months ago
I do that as well, and rest assured, you we are crazy.
[–]Hot_Beef_Injection 2 points3 points4 points 5 months ago
TIL I'm not so insane after all!
[–]Fuck-A-Statue 9 points10 points11 points 5 months ago
Dude I am always in my car during traffic and think of these moments. I always yell out "FUCK!' at the top of my lungs. These memories are from like middle school and shit sometimes lol
[–][deleted] 10 points11 points12 points 5 months ago
Mine is "shut up", i.e. telling myself to shut up.
While not profanity, it is actually easier for people around me to mistakenly think that I was addressing them than if I simply said "fuck" or something...
[–]KazMux 1 point2 points3 points 5 months ago
Same here.. Makes you look/feel pretty damn insane :(
[–]DutchPrisoner 3 points4 points5 points 5 months ago
I often scare my roommate when I do this. And then I wonder "is this how crazy people start talking to themseles?"
[–]GodsOfWarMayCry 1 point2 points3 points 5 months ago
D'oh!
[–]turdlet 8 points9 points10 points 5 months ago
I make this weird moaning/groaning sound when it happens. I guess it's my brain's way of trying to drown out the memory.
I had one of those really really embarrassing situations happen recently, so it's still pretty fresh in my mind and I've been making that weird noise multiple times a day for the past few days. Another week and it'll be another successfully repressed memory ...
[–]schwerpunk 8 points9 points10 points 5 months ago
I usually just start humming loudly. It's not a tremendous improvement, but at least it keep me from exclaiming in public.
[–]TreeBits 3 points4 points5 points 5 months ago
Hah, that's sort of what I do, hum or make some tuneless song noises to myself.
[–]compass_rose 1 point2 points3 points 5 months ago
I sometimes say my own first name, which is weird for people who overhear me. I will have to try this tactic instead.
[–]TrueUDB 4 points5 points6 points 5 months ago
I know that feel. Then you wonder if you actually said it out loud or just thought it. Does not help that I try to play it off by laughing maniacally
[–]AsteroidMiner 2 points3 points4 points 5 months ago
In my case my eyes go intense and wide eyed as I remember the anger and frustration ... then I catch the other commuters looking at me and I soften my gaze, but it still feels kind of embarrassing.
[–]mybrainistheworst 9 points10 points11 points 5 months ago
I made an reddit account JUST so I could respond to this comment. Hopefully someone will respond. This happens to me 50 times a day I seriously feel like this is ruining my life.
I'll be going along fine and then BOOM I remember the time I said something racist when I was 7 (for example) and my body feels like it's burning, and I feel sick to my stomach and I sort of whisper "Shh... I don't want to talk about. It's okay... it's okay." If that doesn't work I say "SHUT UP" and then I feel crazy.
Sometimes, if I'm around people I just make a "mmm" noise and people always say "what?" and I say "nothing".
Sometimes I think of EMBARRASSING THINGS I DIDN'T EVEN DO. Just things I almost did, or things that I could have done. They still make me feel like I want to throw up and then go die in a corner.
I used to see a psychiatrist/therapist and when I was on Zoloft I felt 60% better, you can't imagine what a relief it was to have these thoughts lessened in number and intensity. Then she started me on something else (I forget) and it made the Zoloft feel like it stopped working. Then I missed an appointment.
Now I am so embarrassed that I missed an appointment I can't seem to go back. I can't read important emails if I think they have something in it that will make me feel embarrassed. I avoid certain social situations.
If anyone has any helpful words, or similar experiences.
[–]Tordenskjold 4 points5 points6 points 5 months ago
I have the same problem. What helps me to stay in contact with mental health professionals is to remind my self that it's their job. No matter how crazy I am, no matter what my brain makes me do (miss appointments, lie about progress etc.) they have seen it all before, it's the reason I'm seeing them and it's their fucking job to handle it.

When the embarrassing memories get to me, my knees suddenly stop working and I slowly QWOP myself to the ground.
[–]mahchefai 10 points11 points12 points 5 months ago
The worst part is, they weren't even that embarrassing, I just thought I acted stupidly, but there was no public humiliation/embarrassment
[–]irnec 7 points8 points9 points 5 months ago
Ok, so since we're all in this thread, anyone have a way to stop doing this?
[–]ExcellentGary 7 points8 points9 points 5 months ago
You think everyone does this you're wrong. Confident people learn over time that embarrassing moments happen to everyone and learn to quickly move on. The whole "Meh, so what" attitude is what goes a long way. If you find yourself dwelling on something, take a deep breath, count to 10 and move on to another positive thought. Trust me, it works. By all means, learn from the past but don't dwell on it. That shit sucks.
[–]Bazil1 5 points6 points7 points 5 months ago
Whoa, is this a thing? Because I have this exact problem and it drives me crazy at times.
[–]justme4now97 5 points6 points7 points 5 months ago
I do the same thing, except I say "kill" repeatedly instead of fuck
[–][deleted] 5 months ago

[–]geekgroupie42 3 points4 points5 points 5 months ago

[–]What_Is_X 7 points8 points9 points 5 months ago
I literally say this to myself: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nc_LIR5ExIU
[–]TurboGranny 6 points7 points8 points 5 months ago
I do this as well, but less to myself and more to that asshole part of my brain that likes to troll me.
[–]2pacsofgum 2 points3 points4 points 5 months ago
Oh, i thought I was the only one that did the head thing. Except mine is more of a facepalm.
[–]TurboGranny 2 points3 points4 points 5 months ago
I do this too. Got any tricks for blowing past it? I just grind my teeth and sort of grunt like I'm riding out a muscle spasm.
[–]Joblesssmoker 2 points3 points4 points 5 months ago
Yea. One of my worst ones was when I kissed my mom when I was 8. Still haunts me today.
[–]TheJumboShrimp 1 point2 points3 points 5 months ago
My little brother kissed our mom when he was around that age. Still gives me cringes. Just wanted to let you know that your situation isn't that uncommon.
[–]epsilonius 1 point2 points3 points 5 months ago
yes.. exactly this... man :(
[–]terroh8er 1 point2 points3 points 5 months ago
Wow me too. It's debilitating.
[–]Apocol0id 1 point2 points3 points 5 months ago
I'm in my mid 20's, and remembering awkward moments or embarrassing moments from early high school still gets this reaction from me. I've learned to minimalise it down to a cringe, but sometimes I realize people notice me cringe. Then I have to make up a bullshit excuse.
[–]lunchbag 1 point2 points3 points 5 months ago
So glad I'm not alone on this... had another restless night last night because of this overthinking
[–]TakenakaHanbei 1 point2 points3 points 5 months ago
For me, they yank at my mind and when I think about it, I kinda start hyperventilating.
[–]l84tahoe 1 point2 points3 points 5 months ago
I have the same thing. I equate it to a very mild case of PTSD.
[–][deleted] 51 points52 points53 points 5 months ago*
So last week I went and signed up to a new gym. I had to fill some paperwork while waiting for someone to show me around. So I do that and she comes over and reaches for the piece of paper. which is in my left hand. I try to hand her the pen instead with my right hand. Then she goes to the right and I try to give the paper. We did this back and forth five times.
It get's worse. She decided to commit and just get the pen from the right. Instead of giving her the pen though, I shook her hand while she was holding onto the pen. Then I had to go and have a look around the place and decide my membership with this woman. I could have killed my self right then and there.
It has been added to my bank of gut wrenchingly awkward moments. This is the second time I have shaken someone's hand when they reached for something.
TL'DR person tried to take a piece of paper from me, we do a little back and forth dance with it and I end up shaking her hand instead.
[–]solidfake 8 points9 points10 points 5 months ago
I find this more cute than embarrasing tbh :D

[–]War_Junkie 2 points3 points4 points 5 months ago
That almost looks like they've got a secret handshake going on.
[–]Toolazy2work 15 points16 points17 points 5 months ago
I shook a waiters hand instead of giving him the menu once. We all lol'd
[–]nowthatsalawl 5 points6 points7 points 5 months ago
Instead of giving her the pen though, I shook her hand while she was holding onto the pen.
I lol'ed
I know how you feel when something embarrassing happens and it becomes instant panic in your mind because you know something just got seared into your long term memory that's going to haunt you for who knows how long.
[–]justgetmeonhere 48 points49 points50 points 5 months ago
This happens to me too.
The more time I spend on Reddit, the more I realize how impressively nonunique I am. Every little weird quirk or tick that I have, someone else also has it and has made a post about it.
[–]supkristin 22 points23 points24 points 5 months ago
I think thats part of the reason I like it.
[–]no-sweat 14 points15 points16 points 5 months ago
Also for me, every conversation I have while drinking I will look back the next day and feel embarrassed about, even if nothing embarrassing happened. I've been browsing this thread to see if someone posted some suggestions on how to overcome this, but nada. I think it's the whole 'spotlight' thing where we think people actually give a shit about things we do and constantly judge us... so perhaps we need to learn that people really don't give a shit about what we say or do. I don't know. Anyone? It's just pretty damn annoying.
[–]lovelemurs 2 points3 points4 points 5 months ago
This. Every time after drinking I feel embarrassed or ashamed or something. I think the ego starts kicking in to full inhibitions mode again or something and makes you feel bad. I rarely drink now.
Oh and some people definitely do judge you on everything you do, but fuck them.
[–]useless-knowledge 2 points3 points4 points 5 months ago
Yes! Always happens to me. I think it's less about the spotlight effect and more about being more vulnerable when drunk. I don't get embarrassed about last night's drunk conversations only when it's with my closest friends, even if plenty of embarrassing things happened. But with anyone else I will have that feeling, probably because I trust them less and don't feel like I should be totally open with them.
[–]Freddie_AppsHero 2 points3 points4 points 5 months ago
Yes! I thought it was just me. I get embarrassed and ashamed even if people explicitly tell me that I was awesome that night.
[–]TheDeza 7 points8 points9 points 5 months ago
I was going to post this. The irony is deafening.
[–]lovelemurs 1 point2 points3 points 5 months ago
Coincidence. Irony would be if you were going to say we are unique and he had said it already.
[–][deleted] 2 points3 points4 points 5 months ago
Talking about reddit, I even obsess about my comments that get downvoted and ask myself what I could've said or done differently. And no, it's not because of Karma.
[–]Icantregisteranythin 17 points18 points19 points 5 months ago
5? how about 30?
[–]general_rubbish 10 points11 points12 points 5 months ago
Great. Until now i had hopes it would stop at some point.
Thanks. <.<
[–]Icantregisteranythin 15 points16 points17 points 5 months ago
Only gets worse because it keeps piling up, my father(62) says. I'd ask my grandmother (90) but she's senile, doesn't give a shit.
[–]Atheistus 23 points24 points25 points 5 months ago
so it gets better at some point.
[–]Icantregisteranythin 4 points5 points6 points 5 months ago
Apparently runs in the family so if I can reach old age I'll probably be senile and happy.
[–]alphapple 14 points15 points16 points 5 months ago
I'm lactose intolerant and never knew that I actually was until two years ago. Anyways, I drank a full glass of milk before going to school every morning. My stomach always acted up and I never knew why. In short, I basically farted my way through high school. in.every.single.period.on.a.daily.occurrence. These weren't average farts too, these are the ones that rot like shit and kinda hangout for a bit.
They all knew.
[–][deleted] 37 points38 points39 points 5 months ago
it's so true. I'll never live down the time I pissed myself..while actually sitting on the toilet. I was dropping the crosby kids off at the pool, and was utterly certain my bits were hanging down into the bowl, so I pee...without looking... suddenly my jeans are soaked boxers are soaked, ever the shoes and socks got hit.
It gets worse... I was at school
It gets worse... this was my pre-midterm shit.
The answer is yes, I went to my circuit analysis midterm pretty soaked in urine, because fuck it
[–]fish500 13 points14 points15 points 5 months ago
So who was the father of the kids? Bing, Sydney or David?
[–]annoyinglyclever 1 point2 points3 points 5 months ago

[–]HectorAnonymous 3 points4 points5 points 5 months ago
One time I was fucking around during a fundraiser my school was doing. I was showing off swinging a broom around and I almost hit my favorite teacher in the face. She was not pleased. I was so ashamed I was left speechless. To this day I am still ashamed.
[–]elvorpo 1 point2 points3 points 5 months ago
I was dropping the crosby kids off at the pool
As a Penguins fan, c'mon. This stuff is pathetic. He's a good kid, and a superb talent. He never asked for the spotlight, get off his case. You won your series. Go make fun of Kovalchuk or something.
I'm mature enough to overlook the fact that this is from a post about you pissing yourself.

[–]skitslefritzer 6 points7 points8 points 5 months ago

[–]iamdanhi 6 points7 points8 points 5 months ago
Did you leave out the part where you accidently killed it too?
[–]downvotesmostcats 3 points4 points5 points 5 months ago
definitely this. The more time I spend thinking alone, the more my brain rewrites memories to tell me I embarrassed myself, when I really kicked ass. I like the company of people, they help me not dwell on the past. I like friendly people who make mistakes and laugh them off, not ones who judge you constantly. Fuck those people. Fuck you, dad.
[–]JibberGXP 6 points7 points8 points 5 months ago
I was the fat kid. I got pantsed while taking a jump shot in a co-ed gym glass. Everyone saw my fat-kid dick, fresh out of a wintery lunch outside. Shame.

THAT'S MY STORY. I'M STICKING TO IT.
[–]verycleanteeth 4 points5 points6 points 5 months ago
I just think of this comic whenever it happens and then I feel silly and move on.
And every time they're brought up on memes like this, you automatically jump straight into that moment and get embarrassed all over again.
[–]supkristin 4 points5 points6 points 5 months ago
I started my current job on a Monday. Tuesday of the next week (day 7 of my awesome, professional, brand new job) I shit my pants while taking a smoke break. I have IBD and fuck my life.

When I was in school once I had to ask the teacher for the glue, but I put my hand up and asked the teacher for a poo. I was 15. I still have no idea what the fuck happened to my brain to make me do that. Guess I must have been thinking they sounded similar or something. Still think about that a lot.
[–]baby_jesus_butt_plug 11 points12 points13 points 5 months ago
One time I (female, 20's) had an appointment with a really nice doctor (allergist, male, 60's) who I knew through a family friend. We did the whole scratch test, talked about hypoallergenic stuff, then got off topic and had a nice chat about football, where I'm from, etc. as I was leaving he opened the door and I turned around to shake his hand, but saw his open arm from holding the door and thought he was trying to hug me. A little weird but sure, he's friendly, we had a nice chat, we have a mutual friend, so I go in to reciprocate the hug, which is met with a look of shock and a hand stuck deliberately right in the middle of my open arms. Mortifying. No way to play it off. The look on the receptionists face will haunt me to this day.
[–][deleted] 3 points4 points5 points 5 months ago
Reminds me of Rachel's interview in Friends.
[–]SchruteBuck 2 points3 points4 points 5 months ago
Yep. Random moments of the day, and you bury your head randomly and swear...
[–]Chccy 3 points4 points5 points 5 months ago
I always end up saying ' Oh god why did I do that' Then spend the next 15 minutes running over it making myself feel horrible until I finally say - 'Stop that was ages ago, no point thinking about it now' To which my brain happily provides me with another incident and the cycle of life continues...
[–]need-a-friend 3 points4 points5 points 5 months ago
Used to happen all the time, but now that I don't have any friends and haven't had any for a long time, embarrassing moments rarely occur
[–]itslikeboo 2 points3 points4 points 5 months ago
There's a way to get these to stop bothering you forever. You have to go back to the place you were when it happened (in your mind) and get on your own side.
I'll give you an example: Once, for a public speaking class, I did a speech on guitar construction and I tried to finish with a little solo, and I flubbed it because I was nervous. Some one in the small classroom laughed. I was red as a beet. This bothered me for years, and I hated myself for thinking that I was cool enough to pull that off. The problem was that I asked for approval for being awesome and instead I was pathetic.
But you know what? College me was a shy kid and he was just trying anything he could to get up in front of people and be himself. Fuck those people if they didn't like it. They should have had some compassion. Help a shy kid out, right? don't shame him.
When you have these moments, you're shaming yourself through the eyes of others. Take your own side instead.
This is actually very helpful, thanks.

[–]Axolotile 2 points3 points4 points 5 months ago
hmm, try not to worry about it. It's a good thing you remember it, so that you don't make the same mistake twice. So yeah. It's good for you, don't feel bad about it.
I shall endeavor to not make the same mistake of shitting myself in public again.

I'm pretty sure this is a type of OCD or something. I remember a similar post about regretting stuff five years later and someone linked a wikipedia page with the condition, too bad I can't remember it right now.
[–]acangiano 1 point2 points3 points 5 months ago*
I believe it is common among people who suffer from purely obsessional OCD (meaning that they don't have the compulsion to wash their hands repeatedly or similar observable compulsions, but they still obsess in their heads).
[–]cosmicglitter 1 point2 points3 points 5 months ago
It's social anxiety. It was scary when I looked up social anxiety and realized I fit almost every symptom to the letter, including getting nervous when signing my name because I feel like people are judging my handwriting (and then, because I'm nervous, I fudge it up even more).
The handwriting thing isn't normal?
[–]code_reuse_boss 1 point2 points3 points 5 months ago
Oh please! I lose sleep over things I did 20 years ago. Then again, I was a bad kid...

Got locked in a toilet in a bus station. After five minutes of screaming, my mum decides to run into the mens bathroom to try and get me out. I was 5, and I will never lock a toilet door again. :(
[–]googolplexbyte 1 point2 points3 points 5 months ago
I used to do that, but then I stopped giving a shit.
[–]Rikkushin 1 point2 points3 points 5 months ago

Oh god why
[–]ShivaNZ 1 point2 points3 points 5 months ago
Five? I'm still losing sleep over every awkward moment I can remember!
[–]callmedabau5 1 point2 points3 points 5 months ago
I remember when I was younger I got forced to play Soccer, and (because I didn't even get briefed on how to play the game), during my 2nd match someone chipped it really high and it was coming straight towards me in the middle of our goal square, so instead of me giving it a nice header, I caught it with my two hands which gave the opposite team a penalty. Everyone including the coach and my parents and extended family gave me the are you serious? face and the opposing team continued to score the penalty and win the game. I still punch myself in the face whenever I think of it.
[–]Cornshot 1 point2 points3 points 5 months ago
Oh man, I do this multiple times everyday and it's usually with relatively minor mistakes.

[–]PsychicKay 1 point2 points3 points 5 months ago
THIS. Also, I actually have to somewhat force myself to really modify my voice when I'm being sarcastic--if I speak normally, people take me seriously! Sometimes it is a PITA and I think they're the stupid ones for not getting it, but then I realize it's just a simple matter of miscommunication between two parties, and so I try working on my delivery (getting better...I think). Either way, fun stuff.
[–]IChallengeYouToADuel 1 point2 points3 points 5 months ago
I don't lose sleep, but when I think about them I do a whole body shudder.

[–]EndOfTheDream 1 point2 points3 points 5 months ago
This is reddit. You are never the only one.
Me too! I really am super happy right now. I'm so tired of explaining to people why I'm tired (no sleep) or why I have to swear to myself all the time. I thought nobody else had this problem.
Seriously, I've got a book of excuses I use for when someone catches me doing it. "I just forgot I had to do something" is my favorite.
[–]ajmint 1 point2 points3 points 5 months ago
I draw comfort from the fact that, even though the memory of the events is still probably in the brains of those involved, it's very unlikely that they are thinking about it now, nor have they or will they be for a long time…
[–]Wasabimation 1 point2 points3 points 5 months ago
I had an awkward breakup with a girl. Still bothers me when I try to go to sleep sometimes. I'm 25 now.
The breakup was in the 7th grade.
Feels bad man.

When I was 13 my school was having a practice for the end of year prizegiving. I was top of my class so I went up on stage with the other top students, and that went fine.
But then they called out my class to receive awards. I thought I was supposed to line up with my class as well as the top students, so I waited at the bottom of the stage with everyone else. Everyone got their names called except me, and I was left waiting at the bottom of the stage like an idiot.
The vice-principal, who was doing the awards, called out "what's your name?" but I was too mortified to answer him, so after an awkward silence somebody else told him my name. He then called me up on stage, saying "and last of all, FairlySuper, for being an all-round good character" or something to that effect. So I had to go back up on stage in front of all the year 9 and 10 students, blushing bright red, and I went ahead and shook the vice-principals hand and everything.
Then after everyone had sat back down, the VP called out "OH, FairlySuper you were only supposed to go up with the top students! This is why we have practices for these things, everyone!"
I was a very shy and awkward kid, which just made it that much worse. That was 9 years ago and it still makes me cringe!
[–]mtme 1 point2 points3 points 5 months ago
The best thing you can do is tell the memory to someone until it doesn't bother you anymore. Also tell yourself that it's okay and you made a mistake like everyone else. Eventually they won't sting so much.
[–]Maj12 1 point2 points3 points 5 months ago
"You can spend minutes, hours, days, weeks or even months over-analyzing a situation:trying to put the pieces together, justifying what could've, would've happened...or, you can just leave the pieces on the floor and move the fuck on."
Tupac
[–]ThereTheyGo 1 point2 points3 points 5 months ago
I have the solution. This used to happen to me a lot, but it's almost gone.
Learn to laugh at yourself.
Remember how awkward that moment was? Hahahahaha! That was a tough time, but now it's behind me. Acknowledge the mistake, figure out what went wrong, learn from it, then put it behind you.
The process takes practice, but it a necessary one.

When I ride the express bus in Norway, there are power outlets there. Sometimes they're on, sometimes they're off. Also if I get a bad seat without a power outlet I usually don't move and act like nothing because I'm afraid somebody is going to notice me and not know why I moved seats and then think I'm weird.
Last trip the power outlets were off, and before the ferry (you have to go into the saloon on the ferry) I asked the driver to turn on the power outlets, and he did it. Until we reached the ferry, I asked him while he stopped at a stop. Then after the ferry the power outlets were off again, but I didn't ask because I was afraid the 8 random people on this express long bus would think I was nagging because the power outlets were off, again. So I just shut my computer again and stared blankly out the window the next 45 minutes until I was home.

[–]PsychicKay 0 points1 point2 points 5 months ago
Honestly...this doesn't happen to me. No matter what's happened (unless I wake up from a nightmare or am in a panicky state of mind), I can always fall asleep within 5-15 minutes. Heck, I usually just laugh at my embarrassing moments, brush them off, then ultimately forget them and go on with my life. If it's REALLY "bad" I may think about it for an hour or so, but even then I still just let it go. Don't know why, but hey, it works all the same.
[–]hampusheh 0 points1 point2 points 5 months ago
I still lie sleepless thinking about the time I failed to stand up for one of my best friends at the time, I mean yeah, I was 11-12, but I just stood there, doing nothing

I'm in my mid 40's and still am embarrassed and have flashes of shame. When I read this i remembered peeing my pants in class when I was 7 because the teacher said no one could get up during the test. I feel shame from what i did that really doesn't matter daily.

me and my best friend we talking and i had to use the bathroom she fallowed me in ( because she did stuff like that) i must have sat awkwardly i still don't even know how it happened but i ended up peeing on top of my squeezed together thighs and making a small lake of urine. she noticed and just stared at me. at least she didn't say anything. Well actually she was a huge gossip i'm sure she told everybody in high school. -sigh-
when people ask me how old my kids are i usually get it wrong =-/. i try to practice. and i fear them asking me again. usually they don't notice but it bugs the crap out of me. how can i not ever remember my kids ages. i also forget my age but people just think i'm joking when i do this.
