I can't believe that is a real product, but here it is: http://www.allthingsjewish.com/browseproducts/Nike-Kippah.html

Little do you know that there are kippot with sports team emblems and cartoon characters that people sometimes wear. Back when I still went to synagogue, the rabbi had a Red Sox one.

[–]fourthbrn 11 points12 points ago

I had the sickest TMNJ kippah. I loved it because my hebrew name is Raphael...

[–]coffee_eyes 1 point2 points ago

At work I always see a couple of kids with various cartoon characters and such. The most notable one I've seen was green with the pringles logo on it, not something I expected to see.

First I thought you were trying to say Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles but then the letters didn't fit. Then I read Raphael and got confused again.

Yeah, Kippah is pretty common

[–]MaMaMy 2 points3 points ago

Non-Jew here with 3 questions.

  1. Difference between a kippah and a yarmulke?

  2. Is "Jew" offensive when referring to someone in a descriptive, non-insulting manner?

  3. Is the video for "I'm Jewish and You Know it" offensive or hysterical? I laughed so hard...was that bad and should I feel bad?

[–]THANE_OF_ANN_ARBOR 2 points3 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

  1. A yarmulke and a kippah are the same. Kippah is just the Hebrew word for it, and yarmulke is the Yiddish one.

  2. "Jew" is not offensive when referring to someone in a non-insulting manner. "Kike" is, but it's so rarely used that I would be more amused than insulted if someone used it.

  3. You should not feel bad for laughing about anything. Except for Helen Keller. You should not laugh about Helen Keller.

[–]MaMaMy 1 point2 points ago

Thank you for the response! Judaism fascinates me.

[–]cesog 1 point2 points ago

False, it needs to be worn everywhere. Technically a guy isn't supposed to take four steps with his head uncovered. It's about acknowledging someone (god) is watching every move. As long as there's nothing inappropriate on it (like the Playboy bunny) it's basically "anything goes." As long as enough of the head is covered, the purpose is served. Baseball caps and bucket hats and Kangol hats can count as well.

Also, wearing one isn't really advertising the design on it, it's saying "this is something I like."

[–]Qiran 2 points3 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Actually, as far as I understand the kippah's purpose is to fulfil a Talmudic line that says to cover one's head. Orthodox Jews wear them at all times.

The method of head covering itself has varied a lot over different Jewish cultures and I'm fairly sure the item has no holy significance itself. Therefore there's probably no religious reason to not use it for a bit of stylistic expression (except arguably religious modesty requirements...so you probably won't find Haredim, who are very concerned with how they dress, doing anything like that).

[–]zanhoshi 6 points7 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I'm sure your comment was deeply rooted in understanding and experience with their culture.

[–]fourthbrn 8 points9 points ago

I actually don't believe that it is sacred. For instance, if you drop a prayer book on the ground, you have to kiss it. However, with a kippah, you don't have to.

Clearly you've never been near a Jewish school. If it can be put on fabric, it's been put on a yarmulke. When I was in high school it became cool to get "designer" kipper, made to look like Burberry and Lacoste. In younger kids (and older hipster kids) it's common to see all the cartoons, smiley faces, watermelons, spider webs, etc.

[–]melefante 0 points1 point ago

Most people just use a little hair clip, like these.

[–]DownvoteALot 3 points4 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

The type of kippa pictured (for ultra-Orthodox) stays on without a clip (it's too thick for one anyway).

Kippa sruga (for Orthodox and Zionists) require a clip when there is wind.

[–]toyg 4 points5 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I fail to see how an ultra-orthodox would condone sporting a branded kippah. I am sorry I cannot believe you, sir.

[–]Q-Pod 3 points4 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I don't know why you're saying these things, they aren't true. There isn't a particular kippa for particular Jews (save Haredim).

Many non-orthodox, including myself, wear a kippe sruga, and the type pictured isn't associated with ultra orthodox.

[–]hurotselildothaboker 2 points3 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

At least in Israel, kippot are actually used as political and religious self identification. Generally, you can roughly judge a person's affiliations by the kind of kippah they don on.

[–]Q-Pod 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I lived in Israel for a while. I can say with ease that the kippa sruga that he is referring to is not associated with orthodox.

Yes, kippot can be used to associate with politics or religious ID, but this is not an example of that.

[–]MTK67 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

It depends how long you're wearing them. I'm reformed, so I only wear a yarmulke when I'm at a synagogue or a religious ceremony (bar mitzvah, wedding, funeral, etc.), so if you're just sitting and you have straight hair, it's not really necessary. If you're out and about, a hair pin is a good idea.

[–]iMissMacandCheese 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Depends. Some have a texture on the inside that grips certain hairstyles pretty well. Otherwise they have clips.

Man, at Jew school your yarmulke says a lot about you socially, it's just another aspect of hipness and self representation. I speak from experience here. Our school went through trends of "hip" yarmulkes, and the paradigm was always changing.

That's just not that true. Certainly not if you're modern orthodox like me. You make it sound like wearing a certain style or design on you Yarmulke is a incredibly bold thing.

[–]markhly 4 points5 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Yarmulkes actually are actually often sort of used as political and religious self identification, especially in Israel. More often then not you can make a reasonably certain ascertainment of a person's religious and political affiliations by the kind of yarmulke they wear.

I'm not Jewish, but I'd like to point out that advertising corporate logo's on religious symbols is pretty fucked up.

This just seems surreal. For someone to be so devoted and serious about religion to go through the motions of wearing this symbol of your faith.... And then put a Nike logo on there? I'm pretty sure that if there is/was a god (not here to debate THAT one) he/she/it probably would frown on corporate logos. What's next? Jesus on the cross sporting an apple logo tattoo on his chest? Hmm.. Wait a minute.... [calls Apple. Sells his idea. Gets rich].

I went to my cousin's jew party when she turned 13 or whatever. Some people had sweet jew hats with patterns and stuff on them. I had to wear a lame black one from a big box.

Did you know, Puma was created by a pair of brothers, Adolf (nicknamed: Adi) and Rudolf Dassler? What you probably didn't know is that in 1948, Rudolf shuned his younger brother, Adolf because he shared a name as that other Adolf. Well, turns out, Adolf went on to create his own shoe company to compete with Rudolf and Puma, it was called Adias.

Of course, since you made the orginal comment, so you probably already knew that, I am just tired, and wanted to tell a story.

Adidas was a client of a company I worked for and they pronounced it AH-dee-DAH. I felt very strange when I said it.

Australia doesn't have much of a Jewish community.. I've always wondered how those tiny hats stay on their heads, but I've never seen one in real life.

[–]papet2 0 points1 point ago

There are a few that wear them around my university (Monash in Melbourne my fellow Aussie compatriot) and they all seem to keep them on with hair clips like this.

[–]Agavi 0 points1 point ago

In FIFA, the soccer game, 'Jewing it' means going for the easy option instead of scoring a more flamboyant goal. The more you know.

Ah, the infamous Slurvian. I saw a video once, I think it was "The History of the English Language", by some professor of English. His prediction for the next stage of English was "Slurvian", as demonstrated by this conversation. A man returns home from work to his wife:

WIFE: Jeet? (Did you eat?)

HUSBAND: Jew? (Did you?)
