Adam Savage deserves more on r/atheism. Amazing quote.

[–]bojang1es 0 points1 point ago

More? He's on the front page pretty much every day.

[–]KingoftheAnimus 0 points1 point ago

You kidding me? Have you seen him on the front page of r/atheism within the last week? No.

Looks like Jamie has been jerkin off a bit too much

the inverse square law of gravitation isn't really 'amazing', at least not by itself. there are other types of phenomena defined by an inverse square law like that of gravity (e.g. coulumb's law), so it's as arbitrary as any other specific equation in physics. something like the theory of relativity though is where i agree. the fact that there's nobody administrating everything in the universe (or at least, evidence points to that) makes everything that much more wonderful.

If only you guys could just apply this to government....

[–]loeras -1 points0 points ago

Try explaining this to a christian and they will just say,

"Those are all just theories!! None of its true!"

When instead they should just be appreciating the fact that all of these things make life so interesting.

[–]blowconfused 0 points1 point ago

Hell, I'm an atheist and I don't yet understand the things he listed. I'm not sure I ever will. I wish I could come to understand these more complex ideas, it's just not something I'm academically talented at unfortunately. If I could find more simple books to explain them, I'd love it, but I've yet to find any that can 'dumb it down' enough for me to grasp it. Anatomy and Physiology, piece of cake. Nutrition classes, A+. Stuff like this though, just can't understand the complex terminologies.

Fractals are interesting enough to examine if you like mathematics; they are self-similar designs, kind of like looking in a mirror facing another mirror or a photo of a photo of a photo...

Fractals make some very interesting artwork and they appear in very surprising places in nature (from broccoli to crystal structures). In fact, fractals are incorporated into many films' CGI to make it look more realistic.

[–]blowconfused 0 points1 point ago

That is pretty cool actually. Thanks for answering! What kind of fractals was Adam Savage referring to in the picture? Was he talking about some kind of 'special' fractal that had a part in the Big Bang, or just the ones for broccoli and crystals haha?

Always loved the Mythbusters. Until I came to r/atheism, I never knew they were atheists. I guess I just assumed it though, considering they're scientists.

[–]necroforest -2 points-1 points ago

wtf. They aren't scientists, they did special effects for movies (and no, the stuff they do on the show, while entertaining, isn't "science"). The only person on the show with any technical training is Grant, who has (I believe) as BS in electrical engineering (note how he's the one who gets stuck doing the math if any should arise)

[–]Kolire 0 points1 point ago

They test myths based on nature in a controlled manner. Please tell me how you don't believe that falls under the category of science?

[–]necroforest -1 points0 points ago

They test myths in a relatively ad-hoc way that maximizes entertainment and lacks any semblance of scientific rigor.

[–]CompSci_Enthusiast 0 points1 point ago*

[–]necroforest 0 points1 point ago

And? I'm not saying that they aren't entertaining and that they don't do a good job of making people think about things. I'm saying they aren't scientists.

[–]CompSci_Enthusiast 0 points1 point ago

The masses don't give a shit about whether something is scientific or not, so mythbusters has to be entertaining to gain a wider audience. If may not be the type of scientific rigor that is required in a lab, and it may not be scientifically proving anything that scientists in a lab care about, but they are showing people that you can take generally accepted "facts", put them through a scientific stress test, and then draw conclusions based on the data. You cannot create an entire civilization of people who accept science by simply forcing down the most extremely rigorous testing methods down their throat. The masses need to be entertained while they learn, and Mythbusters does a damn fine job.

As defined by Websters dictionary

Scientist :a person learned in science and especially natural science : a scientific investigator

They investigate myths and use the scientific method to collect data and reach a conclusion based on the data. Therefore, they are scientists.

[–]Kolire -1 points0 points ago

For the most part when they come to a conclusion I believe it (although I can think of exceptions). Their methods usually seem just fine to me. I think most people would agree what they do would be considered science. I'm sorry you have ridiculously high standards.

[–]necroforest -3 points-2 points ago

"high standards" is pretty much the definition of science.

[–]itchaba -1 points0 points ago

your definition of science is...?

[–]Kolire -1 points0 points ago

Apparently you like to argue just to argue.

"the MYTHBUSTERS mix scientific method..." "MythBusters is a science entertainment TV program..." "full of myths, science, experiments and explosions!" "This is the episode list of the popular science television series MythBusters..."

Some quotes from the first page when you google Mythbusters. So that's enough out of you.

[–]necroforest -1 points0 points ago

I didn't know one's scientific contributions were judged based on Discovery channel's marketing materials.
