Rules

  1. No screenshots, or pictures with added or superimposed text. This includes image macros, comics, info-graphics and most diagrams. Text (e.g. a URL) serving to credit the original author is exempt.

  2. No gore or porn. NSFW content must be tagged.

  3. No personal information. This includes anything hosted on Facebook's servers, as they can be traced to the original account holder. Stalking & harassment will not be tolerated.

  4. No solicitation of votes (including "cake day" posts), posts with their sole purpose being to communicate with another redditor, or [FIXED] posts. DAE posts go in /r/DoesAnybodyElse. "Fixed" posts should be added as a comment to the original image.

  5. Submissions must link directly to a specific image file or to an image hosting website with minimal ads. We do not allow blog hosting of images ("blogspam"), but links to albums on image hosting websites are okay. URL shorteners are prohibited.

  • If your submission appears to be filtered but definitely meets the above rules, please send us a message with a link to the comments section of your post (not a direct link to the image). Don't delete it as that just makes the filter hate you!

  • If you come across any rule violations, please report the submission or message the mods and one of us will remove it!

Please also try to come up with original post titles. Submissions that use certain clichés/memes will be automatically tagged with a warning.

What's this? A wild redditor citing a source? I'm happier than a beetle frog in a whippernilly!

[–]Pwnzu_Sauce 37 points38 points ago

Wait... I only pepper my conversations with animal imagery when I'm smitten...

[–]geyserguy92 10 points11 points ago

Well, hey there...

[–]Crocodilly_Pontifex 3 points4 points ago

Eeeeeagleeee!

[–]Nickster93 1 point2 points ago

Jumps into arms. Upvote for a reference I understand.

[–]Shiba-Shiba 0 points1 point ago

Upvote for "whippernilly"!

[–]geyserguy92 1 point2 points ago

Nah, man. OP rocks. I just made a silly comment.

[–]qwerter 12 points13 points ago

Weird. I thought this was the original source.

[–]CoNiGMa 3 points4 points ago

FEED ME SEMORE!

[–]Nateh8sYou 0 points1 point ago

OH SHIT!

[–]Ecto_1 3 points4 points ago

Fascinating stuff, but for anyone that watches the video, were you also weirded out by the guys shirt? The sleeves stopped just above the wrist, the color was an odd shade of green, the collar was also odd, and the entire thing looked like it was made out of a towel.

Sorry, just a flippant observation.

[–][deleted] 2 points3 points ago

Robert Buelteman sends 80,000 volts through his flowery subjects and then literally paints photographs of the outcome.

Why the fuck did I open a dailymail link.

edit: thanks for original source.

[–]ThatCrankyGuy 0 points1 point ago

Yes yes, 80KV, but how many Amps?!! I must know!

[–]zzzacs 80 points81 points ago

this kills the flower.

[–]SimianFriday 40 points41 points ago

Shocking isn't it?

[–]sellyberry 15 points16 points ago

This stems from boredom.

[–]xam217 14 points15 points ago

Brings new meaning to flower power

[–]rook2pawn 13 points14 points ago

Well, Bulbs are often known to have filaments!

[–]guninmouth 5 points6 points ago

You're so smart. I'm sure your mum is proud of you.

[–]MechaCanada 4 points5 points ago

She's ex-static. Not as clingy anymore.

[–]Punkgoblin -2 points-1 points ago

Way to keep things currant. (BAM DOUBLE WHAMMY)

[–]Chemical_Scum 2 points3 points ago

I'd better leaf before people get prickly.

[–]lasermancer 2 points3 points ago

Did anyone else read that in Professor oak's voice?

[–]Garren191 2 points3 points ago

I love how he can just look at human society and say "Holy shit! We're fucked up!".

[–]FatCat433 2 points3 points ago

"You've failed your highness. I am a Jedi, like my father before me."

"So be it...Jedi flower."

[–]chris480 28 points29 points ago

I predict two things will begin happening on /r/pics

  1. A bunch of cool pictures of redditors electrocuting plants.

  2. A bunch of redditors being injured as they attempt to play with high voltage transformers from old microwaves.

[–]Dickfore 10 points11 points ago

and either would make front page

[–]Legoandsprit 13 points14 points ago

But I think number 2 would be more funny.

[–]jxj24 6 points7 points ago

Nothing can fail to entertain that starts with "Turn on the camera and hold my beer."

[–]BobetteFett 4 points5 points ago

Wait, old microwaves have transformers? BRB

[–]BobetteFett 0 points1 point ago

[–]JustARogue 136 points137 points ago

Current goes through, voltage doesn't. Sorry, but this is one of my biggest pet peeves as an electrical engineer.

[–]Jerzeem 144 points145 points ago

Fine fine, "80,000 volts ACROSS a flower".

Are you happy now?

[–]MechaCanada 35 points36 points ago

I'd be happier if the impedance of the flower was stated. I appreciate killing power better in Amperes.

[–]svullenballe 10 points11 points ago

"10 Amperes through a flower!" doesn't sound as impressive.

[–]tarheel91 12 points13 points ago

It does considering it only takes a few dozen mA to kill someone.

[–]svullenballe 14 points15 points ago

Most people don't know that.

[–]Redebidet 6 points7 points ago

If you want to impress your audience with a big number just use uA. Then at least you will just be artificially inflating things instead of saying something that is factually wrong.

[–]tins1 1 point2 points ago

10,000,000 nA through a flower!!

[–]DesertTripper 8 points9 points ago

Also, considering the voltage potential that would be required to send 10A through a flower, suffice it to say that said flower would be extremely bright for an instant before disappearing in a big puff of smoke.

[–][deleted] ago

[–]vozerek 0 points1 point ago

Been there man.

[–]arcanition 0 points1 point ago

It was a joke, I knew what he was talking about.

[–]ohgodwhatthe 0 points1 point ago

You should still study up anyway. Don't wanna be caught unprepared, when life attacks.

[–]Punkgoblin 1 point2 points ago

That could be a lot.

[–]tomjenks1 0 points1 point ago

that flower has a really high resistance then

[–]engineerection 9 points10 points ago

Just say amp for christ sake.

[–]MechaCanada 21 points22 points ago

Agreed, the Amp-for-christ-sake unit just doesn't get enough recognition for how much real world application it has :(

[–]Shintenpu 1 point2 points ago

I was actually really wondering about this.

[–]DesertTripper 1 point2 points ago

Probably not even across. Just raising the flower to a potential of 80,000 volts in relation to the surrounding air can cause all sorts of corona discharge, which is what the photo appears to be.

Perhaps you EEs can explain corona better; it's kind of mysterious to me. I've read about it but the explanation always ends up being a bunch of lowercase Greek letters and I get lost.

[–]Liger_Zero 17 points18 points ago

As an EE myself..

[–]shiftyeyedgoat 11 points12 points ago

i j know that feel, bro.

[–]Gangreless 0 points1 point ago

[–]DesertTripper 2 points3 points ago*

However, you can't have current without voltage..

(or can you? When power factor leads or lags, there is a point on the sine wave where current is flowing with no voltage (e.g., at arbitrary point x, the current is a third of peak but voltage is at the zero line.) How can this be?)

[–]zild3d 1 point2 points ago

you can have current through a zero ohm resistor, with no voltage across it.

[–]Delta2Wye 0 points1 point ago

There is no such thing as a true 0Ω resistor, it always will have some minute resistance that will cause a voltage drop.

[–]keramos 1 point2 points ago

Superconductor?

[–]Delta2Wye 0 points1 point ago

The difference in potential will be present in the system resulting in current. The lack of resistance in a superconductor will result in zero voltage drop and no power dissipation.

[–]Delta2Wye 0 points1 point ago

If AC power is leading or lagging it is due to the presence of capacitance or inductance. Capacitors and inductors store energy, when an AC voltage source is applied to them they cause the current to become leading or lagging. The energy stored in these devices is what is flowing when the voltage is zero.

[–]cameltoesback 6 points7 points ago

came here to look for this, thank you! it bothers me so much!

[–]itstugi 0 points1 point ago

Physicist here. Same. Thanks.

[–]AnalBumCovers 28 points29 points ago

hell yeah this is my uncle's work. Even thought it fits well, I'm still kinda surprised to see his stuff on Reddit. Check out the rest of his collection. It's all equally badass.

[–]Trapped_in_Reddit 81 points82 points ago

When you think about it, it's pretty sick that we're passing 80k volts through something's genitalia

[–]FlappyTheNarwhal 46 points47 points ago

Dude, just get outside. Please.

[–]smokeybearsb 7 points8 points ago

I understand now. If I get the joke, I need to go outside and get a life. Outside of going to class.

[–]FlappyTheNarwhal 7 points8 points ago

The joke is that he's Trapped_In_Reddit.

[–]smokeybearsb 1 point2 points ago

...I'm trapped in reddit!

Edit: Oh sorry guys. [8] Maybe I'm slow. I was just trying to say that I've realized this: I'm trapped in reddit. Dammit. I'm gonna go outside lol

[–]Cherried 2 points3 points ago

Not sure if gets joke... or still [8]...

Still go outside.

[–]TheoQ99 0 points1 point ago

But the outside is so hostile and full of people.

[–]Cherried 2 points3 points ago

That is true.

[–]cantankerousrat 0 points1 point ago

I'm not entirely sure if he can. He is trapped, just like the rest of us.

[–]terriblehuman 1 point2 points ago

Probably happens all the time in the CIA.

[–]Splitshadow 1 point2 points ago

When you think about it, Trapped in Reddit likely read today's SMBC, or at least saw the /r/comics post.

[–]TheoQ99 0 points1 point ago

You saw that smbc too huh?

[–]Jarriel 1 point2 points ago

This is really cool; although, volts go across while current goes through..

[–]asinger93 1 point2 points ago

80,000 volts across the flower. Voltage cannot go "through" something.

[–]WorstAnswerPossible 5 points6 points ago

This aroused me.

[–]Jedamethis 0 points1 point ago

Oh shit, me too. Does that make me a bad person?

So much power...fucking beautiful (Probably going to have somebody say that power is the wrong term to use. Thank you in advance for correcting me!)

[–]crapallthetime 0 points1 point ago

Based only on what I've read, I'm guessing Florida or Texas.

Ok, just a warning though, if you fuck up, you will die. I am not an electrical engineer, I really don't know what I am doing, so forgive my incorrect vocabulary here...

Buy a large CRT monitor from a thrift store. As long as it turns on, it will work. However, it is best if you can find an old one that won't go into standby when there is no video signal (light on the front stays green / never turns off or goes amber)

Remove the plastic cover and you'll find a suction-cup like thing attached to the tube by a thick wire.

Splice high-gauge wire (the highest gauge you can find at Home Depot / Lowes) with this high-voltage wire. Thickly wrap the junction with electrical tape.

Attach this wire to whatever you want to eletrify. Never allow the wire to touch a grounded surface. You will, however, want to place the electrified object 1-2 inches from a groundwire / grounded surface.

Carefully turn the monitor on, and be prepared to take pictures as 60-80k volts flows into whatever you hooked it up to.

ALWAYS have a fire extinguisher nearby. The monitor honestly could explode, this isn't a safe experiment by any stretch.

There are many other things you can hook up for some fun results!

  • Grounded antenna / charged antenna (parallel) = Jacob's Ladder
  • Florecent tube = on
  • strobe bulb = blinding light!
  • incandescent lightbulb = plasma arcs!
  • plants = sparks everywhere; also dead plants
  • CD's = fractal burns and burnt plastic smell
  • you = dead you

I have gone through 7 monitors doing shit like this. I did shock myself once, and that was the last time I messed around with this. I am lucky to be alive, the shock knocked me unconscious, and I was loopy for a few days.

Also, NEVER play with this without proper ventilation. When electric current passes through air it converts O2 to O3, which you cannot breathe. If the air starts to smell acidic, turn it off and get out of the room. Do this outside if possible, or don't leave it on long otherwise.

And as cool as it may seem on paper, don't hook up multiple monitors to get "more volts". It doesn't work that way, you'll just start a fire, possibly inside the wall you have them plugged into...

[–]hotamali 0 points1 point ago*

one step you forgot... ALWAYS DISCHARGE A CRT BEFORE WORKING ON IT!!!!

Take a screwdriver with an insulated handle, attach a wire to the metal end. Attach the other end of said wire to metal casing on CRT and stick the screwdriver under the suction cup (anode). This will eliminate any residual charge.

[–]RealityIsMyReligion 0 points1 point ago

Yes, this, kinda of important. Please don't die.

[–]faultydesign 0 points1 point ago

Reminds me of this SMBC comic

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point ago

I thought this said 80,000 volts of flower, still not disappointed

[–]ian5296 0 points1 point ago

[–]T00LMaker 0 points1 point ago

In Crysis 2 music album, there is a track by Zimmer called "Catastrophic Beauty". That's the description of this image.

[–]triforcemack 0 points1 point ago

quick! somebody make a wallpaper!

[–]Deprogrammer9 0 points1 point ago

Tesla coil!

[–]Ienpw_III 0 points1 point ago

Is this a visible light photo or are filters used? The article said it's "invisible to the naked eye" but that could mean it's too weak to detect or that it's out of the visible spectrum.

[–]tordyveln 0 points1 point ago

Anybody else noticed the face?

[–]Canucklehead99 0 points1 point ago

At quick glance I thought it read "80,000 volt thrower"

[–]TeamBlade 0 points1 point ago

That. Is. COOL!!

[–]sleepfortheweak 0 points1 point ago

Mumm Napa has an art gallery with a bunch of photos and while I was there a year ago they had a bunch of his work on display. They are amazing in color and the flowers looked like they were glowing; like there is a light behind the image causing it to glow. I recommend to see his work in person if you can. And if you go to Mumm Napa, they have delicious sparkling wine.

[–]Calvinb27 0 points1 point ago
