I could be wrong, but I think that firefighter is the "engineer" who stays with the truck to keep all the equipment running. He may be spraying water at the truck's water pump or valves to keep them from freezing - or perhaps overheating.

Also sometimes when you stretch out a long rubber hose that's been coiled up for a long time, it's difficult because there is lots of friction. Spraying it with water lubricates it and lets it unravel easier.

All of those explanations are more likely than some inexplicably retarded fireman spraying his own truck instead of the fire.

[–]Stopikingonme 177 points178 points ago

Ex firefighter here. He probably is the engineer but the reason he is spraying is because the amount of heat that radiates from a fire is incredible. We would generally hose down the outside of our engines to cool the paint which would ensure the paint wouldn't peel or at least last longer. It's not like the engine is in danger of catching fire at that distance. To be fair I don't know if I would have bothered at that distance, but I wasn't there.

[–]davdahal 123 points124 points ago

Notice how cold it is (ice on the ground, covering over his face, etc..)? The cold is causing the water to freeze the controls. He's basically using the water to melt the ice on the back of the engine. Pretty common in cold areas. I've had ice over an inch thick on my gear before (actually keeps the heat in and keeps you warm.)
If your stationed so close you have to cool down the engine, then it's time to re-evaluate your staging position.

[–]oalsaker 20 points21 points ago

Luleå is pretty far north in Sweden so this makes sense.

[–]TRAUMAjunkie 1 point2 points ago

Radiating heat travels far. As a fellow firefighter I can confirm that he is keeping the truck cool and preventing the paint from bubbling. its a shame you have so many upvotes for being wrong when i'm the THIRD firefighter to confirm this. What is you're area of expertise?

[–]davdahal 1 point2 points ago

Its not radiant heat. Did you notice the snow and slush on the ground? Did you notice the firefighter much closer to the fire? He is clearing ice off the control panel on the rear of the engine.

[–]ifightfirewithwater 58 points59 points ago

Firefighter here, that is exactly what he is doing.

A man walks into a talent agent's office....

[–]Flowerpig 6 points7 points ago*

says: "have I got an act for you!. Listen, it's a family act, filled with all that wholesome fun you need to pull in those really big numbers!". "Really?", says the agent, having been put through this song and dance before. "I guess your gonna tell me something really outlandish, aren't you? Describe an act so heinous nobody would ever dream of putting on-stage? Probably something involving shit, cum, incest, wanton abuse of animals and a general disrespect for human decensy? And I guess you're gonna want to top all of this of by calling your act The Aristocrats, aren't you? Just to make it all ironic and political?"."No," says the man, "I was actually going to propose doing Jersey Shore: on ice!, but I'm sure we could tone it down a bit".

[–]cgibson6 3 points4 points ago

Lol thanks for saving me 15 seconds I used it to thank you

[–]wpiman 7 points8 points ago

Accountant here... no clue what he is doing..

[–]ExK4 0 points1 point ago

In other news, your books are done, and you're up for the quarter.

[–]ourmet 0 points1 point ago

what if it's an oil fire?

does water still help?

[–]NewWorldOrderftw 0 points1 point ago

I fight fire with fire!

[–]ifightfirewithwater 7 points8 points ago

That's not very effective... I learned that in the academy.

[–]TraumaPony 1 point2 points ago

Unless backburning?

[–]ifightfirewithwater 0 points1 point ago

Meh

[–]nickkeator -1 points0 points ago

that fire 1 course is so pathetic i passed it at 16. I was a volunteer for a couple years.

[–]ifightfirewithwater 0 points1 point ago

I was being sarcastic. And I didn't go through any "fire 1" course. I went through advanced firefighter III Academy.

[–]fjonk 1 point2 points ago

Firefighter Academy III

Starring: Leslie Nielsen, Steve Martin and Dan Aykroyd

[–]nickkeator 0 points1 point ago

Nice man, I gave up on it due to the extreme faggotry in my local dept. All power too ya

[–]newtype2099 2 points3 points ago

I was about to say he could be shooting water at the truck or the other house; near where i lived a house made of fat lighter lit up like a dutch brothel and the houses immediately next to it lit up with it.

Firefighters also spray vehicales and houses to help lessen the heat and chances of spreading the fire.

Not saying that to you, but to whoever else may be reading.

[–]bdamn 1 point2 points ago

I was looking at the picture going" there has to be some explanation...". thanks for the info! :)

[–]oneslyfox 7 points8 points ago

I looked at the picture and thought "That seems odd. Let's check the comments." I left satisfied.

[–]lud1120 1 point2 points ago

On any other place on the Internet there would only be mostly "lols", memes and stupid stuff rather than comments explaining from people in the know.

[–]returnofdoom 0 points1 point ago

You have to admit, it looks pretty funny still.

[–]ThisOpenFist -1 points0 points ago

Then shouldn't fire engines be painted or coated with something else besides conventional car paint?

[–]RazZoswe 11 points12 points ago

That is in Luleå, where i'm from, where winters get as cold as -40c...

[–]Rflkt 12 points13 points ago

Unless the truck was on fire

[–]NumblyBumbly 11 points12 points ago

or quite dirty

[–]derpaherpa 4 points5 points ago

That makes way too much sense.

I'm guessing he's filling it up.

[–]ForgettableUsername 3 points4 points ago

Also, the truck is red, which sort of makes it look like it's on fire.

[–]NewWorldOrderftw 0 points1 point ago

We need white firetrucks instead

[–]sexyboygirlmanwoman 1 point2 points ago

Damn you for ruining my laughter with a logical explanation...DAMN YOU!

[–]AlphaLima 0 points1 point ago

Also, that building is gone. No point in trying to stop it now, protect the property around it and let the fire burn itself out.

[–]WindinthePillows 0 points1 point ago

Sshh! It's funny :P

[–]FBoaz 0 points1 point ago

"All of those explanations are more likely than some inexplicably retarded fireman spraying his own truck instead of the fire."

Yeah, but, that's a much funnier way of looking at it.

Thanks for the insight though.

[–][deleted] -2 points-1 points ago

Bullshit. He had to clean the bird shit off.

[–]chekkers 37 points38 points ago

I'm sure there's a legitimate reason behind this.

[–]EvOllj 11 points12 points ago

I guess he is defrosting.

[–]feureau 2 points3 points ago

Wouldn't the water freezes as soon as he stops spraying?

[–]sparton192 3 points4 points ago

Yeah after... that's why he's in the middle of it while they are fighting the fire most of the damage can't be stopped anyways

[–]BIG_TONY_TALK 2 points3 points ago

He's trying to spray the excess letters off of the truck.

[–]Chugabilly 49 points50 points ago

This picture does not do justice for what is going on. He is spraying the engine to protect it from the radiant heat being given off my the fire. Anyone who has been on a large fully involved structure or commercial building fire will know just how much heat is given off.

[–]Jesus_marley 14 points15 points ago

I can attest to the heat. When I was in Vancouver a condo building went up and a police car that was parked on the street about 100 metres away had its tires melted on the side facing the blaze. freaky.

[–]polishprince76 4 points5 points ago

My local podunk volunteer fire department brought two new engines to a fire. They parked them too close to the fire and both engines melted down to the frame. Best part? Neither of them was paid for. Good times.

Moral of that story : fuck yes, water down the trucks (and park them a little farther away).

[–]Chugabilly 3 points4 points ago*

I have been in the fire service 21 years as of January. 10 years as a volunteer firefighter (structural) during which I also worked as a paid, seasonal Forest Technician doing Helitack and Engine work here in Alaska as well as Nationally. I am on my 11'th year as a career city firefighter now. I have personally melted the shit out of a type 6 brush truck on a large wildland interface type fire as well as seen several that were burned over. Nobody killed or hurt thankfully. When I was a Vol. Captain, I parked an engine too close on a fully involved structure and melted the cherries as well as the front marker lights and cracked the front windshield when the guys threw snow on it to cool it off. I actually have this on video (90's vintage 8mm). I need to transfer it to dig and put it on Youtube.

[–]alphanovember 0 points1 point ago

Wait, what? Melted down to the frame? I HIGHLY doubt that. I think you mean the rubber tires melted, right?

[–]Ken_U_Dig_It 5 points6 points ago

No he meant they melted down to the frame. Polish firefighters duh.

[–]polishprince76 0 points1 point ago

Nope, it was a crazy big fire on a dairy farm. The trucks basically became enveloped inside all the buildings that were on fire and melted down as much as they could. Monumentally stupid by our local rednecks. I've tried to find an article on it and can't find anything. It was 3 years ago, lost to the world apparently.

[–]Shadowglove 23 points24 points ago

This happened in 2003 in April, in Luleå as you might have guessed by the fire truck, the building burnt down completely but luckily nobody got hurt or killed in the fire. Here is an article in DN about it (it is in Swedish).

[–]drgigg 4 points5 points ago

hey that is a fire from my town in sweden luleå about, oh 7-8 years ago the house that burnt down was a historcally marked house over 100 years old so it was kinda a shame it burnt down :<

now they are building a hotel i think i am not sure

P.S you could see the smoke so far away O.O

[–]SickaNDiRR 4 points5 points ago

Luleå the only town i've spent more time sleeping in then being awake. Not much to do there when the only people you know is old relatives.

[–]jamintime 6 points7 points ago

[–]lilsully4 4 points5 points ago

There is a very good chance that he is doing something very necessary, like making sure other houses aren't on fire. Don't be an ass and jump to conclusions.

[–]Khuskan 5 points6 points ago

Yes, but that doesn't stop the photo from being funny, due to it being taken out of context.

[–]RadioHitandRun 2 points3 points ago

He could be doing three things. A: bleeding the air out of that hose length. B: running a small handline to keep the water circulating in that specific pumper to keep it from over heating. C: protecting exposures from radiant heat. So he is not an idiot.

[–]Kinglink 2 points3 points ago

There's a very good reason for this. You want to make sure the tools you use to put out the fire remain in good working order. That means avoiding melting or having part of the fire get on the truck and burn through the hose or other vital equipment.

This is posted like once every couple monthes, and yet that's actually what fire departments will do under standard operating procedures.

[–]360walkaway 2 points3 points ago

Scumbag Reddit...

[–]big_giant_turd 1 point2 points ago

I'm a long way from a firefighter, but I used to do some work in the firestation in my hometown. There was a fire over here a couple of years ago and the front of the truck started melting around the window.. So yeah, the heat is freaking immense.

[–]signspam 1 point2 points ago

Someones gotta keep the trucks clean

[–]r2deetard 1 point2 points ago

Well someone has to keep the truck cool.

[–]Angry_Bitch_Whining 1 point2 points ago

Woop woop Luleå

[–]barbaq24 1 point2 points ago

I can't help but think that those 1"3/4 lines probably aren't gonna fair very well up against that kind of fire. I'm normally not a girth nazi when it comes to hoses, as I prefer a 2"1/2, but in this case, I can't help but see a garden hose.

[–]YAISEDDIT 0 points1 point ago

My girl friend is a girth nazi...

[–]Soup_and_a_Roll 1 point2 points ago

Dammit Josh! Do your job!

[–]HeroOfCanton 2 points3 points ago

AGAIN, this is not WTF. Rule of thumb. Look at the icon in the upper left hand corner. Does the link make you do that? No? Ok submit it to /r/pics or something.

[–]imperfectfromnowon 3 points4 points ago

But he's a fireman and he isn't spraying the fire! WHAT THE FUCK!?! *sarcasm

[–]BahamutSalad 0 points1 point ago

Belongs in funny IMO.

[–]Chugabilly 0 points1 point ago

It is entertaining to see the comments that non firefighters come up with when they see pictures like this.

[–]NumblyBumbly 2 points3 points ago

It's also entertaining to see how personally the firefighters take said comments.

[–]hazwoper_Nick 3 points4 points ago

No wonder the building burnt down, they're using what appear to be 1.5 inch attack lines with a tiny 3 inch supply. Silly Euros.

As a Fire Fighter I support what this man is doing. Nothing like a dirty truck during a structure fire.

[–]Darklight_2501 0 points1 point ago

Damn Redditors with your logic. 9gaggers would have just assumed he was a retard. (Amusingly.)

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point ago

He just has a serious case of ADHD. He happened to notice the truck was dirty on his way to hose the fire.

[–]Goonboo 0 points1 point ago

This is why paramedics call firefighters "hosemonkies"

[–]Butteruts 0 points1 point ago

Whatever ambulance jockey.

[–]dubled 0 points1 point ago

Could be worse, how about these firefighters hosing down the back of the car while the driver gets flamed http://www.liveleak.com/view?i=5b5_1335432895

[–]burrito_fucker 0 points1 point ago

this guy reminds me of danny tanner on full house vacuuming his stand up vacuum with his handheld one.

[–]Zarathustraa 0 points1 point ago

then what do freedom fighters fight?

[–]Schnitze1 0 points1 point ago

I think this shot was taken off scene, missing any other trucks trying to hose down the burning house. Perhaps that house is already beyond repair and they needed to wet down the surrounding properties to prevent further burning. I don't think this is as WTF as the picture may lead you to believe.

[–]sldyvf 0 points1 point ago

[–]cynoclast 0 points1 point ago

I don't think it's the case here, but did you know that firetrucks can melt?

Back when I was in elementary school the chemical plant in the area had a huge accident and there was an explosion heard for miles. I think it was a big oil tank that caught fire. I heard that they ruined something like three firetrucks because they were so close to the massive fire that the entire truck sagged in the middle.

Here's an article about the explosion. Maybe it the melting truck thing was a rumor, but this was almost 20 years ago.

[–]yinoryang 0 points1 point ago

For this pic to be as cynical as you'd like, he should have the hose through his legs.

[–]lenush 0 points1 point ago

As a Norwegian - this pleases me.

[–]4chans_for_pussies 0 points1 point ago

I could be wrong, but I believe they do this as a precaution to keep the fire from spreading.

Just thought you'd like to know that this was my new co-worker's first experience with Reddit. I was browsing today and he walked in my office.
