Rules

  1. No screenshots, or pictures with added or superimposed text. This includes image macros, comics, info-graphics and most diagrams. Text (e.g. a URL) serving to credit the original author is exempt.

  2. No gore or porn. NSFW content must be tagged.

  3. No personal information. This includes anything hosted on Facebook's servers, as they can be traced to the original account holder. Stalking & harassment will not be tolerated.

  4. No solicitation of votes (including "cake day" posts), posts with their sole purpose being to communicate with another redditor, or [FIXED] posts. DAE posts go in /r/DoesAnybodyElse. "Fixed" posts should be added as a comment to the original image.

  5. Submissions must link directly to a specific image file or to an image hosting website with minimal ads. We do not allow blog hosting of images ("blogspam"), but links to albums on image hosting websites are okay. URL shorteners are prohibited.

  • If your submission appears to be filtered but definitely meets the above rules, please send us a message with a link to the comments section of your post (not a direct link to the image). Don't delete it as that just makes the filter hate you!

  • If you come across any rule violations, please report the submission or message the mods and one of us will remove it!

Please also try to come up with original post titles. Submissions that use certain clichés/memes will be automatically tagged with a warning.

Belongs to Richard A. Macksey, Professor of Humanities and Director of the Humanities Center at The Johns Hopkins University.

Dr. Macksey presides over one of the largest private libraries in Maryland, with over 70,000 books and manuscripts.

I want to eventually own enough books that I start presiding over it instead of just owning

[–]silent_p 5 points6 points ago

I own pretty close to that many books, but they're all on the same machine. Do I preside over my computer?

I have to agree that presiding over a library and owning a digital library are not the same. I feel that preside implies all the other tasks that go into keeping a library of paper books. The cataloging, the arrangment, the repair, the re-shelving, the tracking, all of this is what presiding over a library implies to me.

I'm the dude in the off white stripped polo shirt when they are filming a class outside (4:36). I have drastically underestimated how excited I am to see myself on the internets.

[–]RadicalFaces 0 points1 point ago

What's it like being invited to those private seminars? Is he really as brilliant as he seems?

[–]im_a_bird_biologist 1 point2 points ago

Unfortunately it was not a private seminar, but just a random class I signed up for that ended up being held at his house. But to answer your question, yes, he is as brilliant as he seems. He gave me perspective on so many great artists that I could not even begin to appreciate without his insight (look into Chuck Jones, you will love your childhood more).

[–]CafeNero 1 point2 points ago

Awesome. Thanks for that.

I own several thousand books and I could approach this size if I kept acquiring them all my life, but my collection would never be worth anything because 1) I never care about editions if it's the same text, 2) I buy mostly used books, and 3) I can't read without annotating and I mistreat what I read so much. Books lose all value when they go through my hands.

I heard that John Hopkins is a school for bros, can anyone confirm this?

[–]sniffles_snort 0 points1 point ago

what does that mean?

[–]theLinguist 0 points1 point ago

WHAT DOES THAT EVEN MEAN?!

[–]sniffles_snort -1 points0 points ago

I posted this picture ages ago. I've sat in that room many times. I've smoked cigarettes with Macksey while talking Proust. I've watched black and white films projected from a 16mm projector from in front of that picture. I'd recognize that room anywhere.

[–]UrinalCakes[S] 6 points7 points ago

Are you Macksey's dog by any chance?

[–]sniffles_snort 0 points1 point ago

ha no. but i'd happily take the job.

[–]MrTrashBuckets -4 points-3 points ago

Time for him to get an iPad.

[–]someFunnyUser -2 points-1 points ago

Kindle for 95% of all those books. But I LOVE books despite having a kindle. But keeping books for smell and looks is silly.

[–]billyfalconer 1 point2 points ago

I'll bet it's less than 5%.

[–]Stackinator 1 point2 points ago

I'd say he started this collection long, long before the existence of the Kindle

[–]BaccaFett 15 points16 points ago

Stay out of the shadows....

[–]marinasdiamond 3 points4 points ago

Hey, who turned out the lights?

[–]BaccaFett 1 point2 points ago

are you ghosting?

[–]rookabird 0 points1 point ago

Guys...I have two shadows....

[–]elkins9293 11 points12 points ago

God, this is like porn to me.

[–]evilted 3 points4 points ago

I'm sure there's some in there somewhere.

[–]captnemo01 2 points3 points ago

[–]terminal_veracity 1 point2 points ago

Count the shadows, for God's sake if you want to live ug snug snick ack

[–]fluffyplague 3 points4 points ago

I heard

So big it doesn't need a name

in my head in the Doctor's voice.

[–]Thegoodfriar 7 points8 points ago

I'd read the shit out of those books.

Also, there's something more 'Magical' about having an actual book over a kindle... maybe it's the smell of the pages.

[–]wojovox 2 points3 points ago

This room was always my dream.....then technology fucked it up.

[–]Stelr 3 points4 points ago

BOOKS NOT BELONG ON THE BOOK LADDER

[–]CorpseEye 5 points6 points ago

THEY BELONG IN A MUSEUM!

[–]malmad 3 points4 points ago

SO DO YOU!

[–]librarianzrock 2 points3 points ago

Love you Indie! ;)

[–][deleted] 2 points3 points ago

Unless there is some sort of organisational paradigm that I'm not seeing at all, it makes me cringe to think about finding a book in there.

[–]sniffles_snort 0 points1 point ago

He knows. He will often absentmindedly gesture while making a point. You follow the general direction and see the book to which he was referring.

[–]Movablewall 2 points3 points ago

There was time...

[–]nogswarth 1 point2 points ago

Julian: 'Wow, look at all the books!'

Ricky: 'Fuck off with the books, Julian!'

[–]Peace_139 1 point2 points ago

Somewhere in there is an orangutan.

[–]Julianlopez420 1 point2 points ago

Is it bad that I instantly think of setting this place on fire?

[–]jughandle 1 point2 points ago

You'd think he'd be smart enough to build some extra shelves after reading all those books, no?

[–]azarashi 1 point2 points ago

God I would love this even though I don't read books

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point ago

Start earning it, read a book today.

[–]sirmichaelhunt 1 point2 points ago

I have class there on Thursday nights. He hires a cook to have it fully catered. He is unbelievably smart

[–]FedexSentMeAHead 1 point2 points ago

While I love how this one image represents such a large and expansive arrangement of knowledge, it really is amazing to think that anyone of us have access to that same volume of material in an instant. If you want to comprehend the value of the internet, this is something you need to compare it to.

[–]TennMan78 1 point2 points ago

That library now:

[–]nznova 0 points1 point ago

And now you can carry all of that in your pocket on an e-reader or tablet. SCIENCE!

[–]Spartan09 0 points1 point ago

The sad thing is that is probably more than anyone could read in an entire lifetime.

[–]im_a_bird_biologist 0 points1 point ago

I TOOK A CLASS IN THAT ROOM!!! Macksey is awesome!

[–]PresidentJaxson 0 points1 point ago

[–]BRBbear 0 points1 point ago

[–]Esc4flown3 0 points1 point ago

[–]Maullasses 0 points1 point ago

[–]theLinguist 0 points1 point ago

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point ago
