The Parthenon is a temple built on the Acropolis dedicated to Athena, hence the city name Athens.

[–]honeynoats 31 points32 points ago

Yes, in Greek Athens isn't "Athens" it's "Athína"(pronunciation, not greek lettering or anything, obviously), emphasis on the middle syllable. So, yes, I do see Athena, the city.

[–]maryonthay 26 points27 points ago

As a Greek, I appreciate you.

[–]honeynoats 14 points15 points ago

As a Greek, I appreciate you as well. I love my heritage. Fucking so proud to be Greek.

[–]prettyawkwardpenguin 13 points14 points ago

Aside from that whole 'economy' thing you used to have....

[–]Ricolientje 1 point2 points ago

They had an economy? I need proof.

[–]honeynoats 0 points1 point ago

Haha. I'm american, but 50% Greek, my Dad's family's been in the states for a generation before him, but he's 100%.

Glad I don't have to deal with that part of being Greek. Our american economy is struggling, but shit, theirs is dying.

[–]agasizzi 3 points4 points ago

Yeah, and an American company played a large part in their situation

[–]honeynoats 0 points1 point ago

Good or bad? I haven't really kept up on it too much or paid a ton of attention to the details. But, it doesn't surprise me that an American company is a large factor in fucking other people over, if that's what happened.

[–]unfashionable_suburb 0 points1 point ago

He's probably referring to Goldman Sachs and their creative accounting that helped Greece hide its debt from the EU.

[–]libreg 10 points11 points ago

I'm greek as well, malakes. Where's MY circle jerk?

[–]malakies 5 points6 points ago

Follow me to the Greek people circle jerk!

[–]honeynoats 1 point2 points ago

As a Greek (American, but 50% Greek), I appreciate you!

[–]manedwolf -1 points0 points ago

As a person who lived in Greece, I appreciate you!

[–]Dr___Awkward 4 points5 points ago

As a person who ate at a Greek restaurant once, I appreciate you!

[–]Hawkhead47 0 points1 point ago

As a person whose been too a Greek wedding, I appreciate you!!

[–]fajro 0 points1 point ago

[–]feureau 1 point2 points ago

As a non-Greek, thank you for Saint Seiya.

[–]honeynoats 0 points1 point ago

Hmm. Never seen/read it before. Looks like it could be good. I'm pretty picky when it comes to Manga, I'm not a big fan of the super over the top anime-ness of a lot of them, but it has to do with Athena, so it's already looking better than most. Haha.

[–]Lokky 2 points3 points ago

Saint Seya is an absolute classic. I'm Italian and love classical culture, SS was fucking amazing.

[–]hna 0 points1 point ago

I don't usually like anime or manga to be honest, but Saint Seiya (anime) is awesome! Never read the manga.

[–]donovanjneumann 0 points1 point ago

As an Italian, bipity boopity, c'mon with the shudduppah

[–]ew73 7 points8 points ago

You know what they say of the Acropolis...

[–]BuccaneerRex 44 points45 points ago

Artemis or Selene, maybe...

[–][deleted] 4 points5 points ago

Rhiannon, or in Irish Áine.

[–]BuccaneerRex 13 points14 points ago

Why would a Celtic goddess be hanging out at the Parthenon? When she's in Greece, she uses her other alias.

[–][deleted] 6 points7 points ago

As the saying goes, beauty is in the eye of the beholder.

[–]BuccaneerRex 17 points18 points ago

OW, my eye! My doctor told me I'm not supposed to get beauty in it!

[–]Bishopkilljoy 8 points9 points ago

I'm going by Elune cause World of Warcraft gods are 10x more entertaining

[–]JaxRiens 3 points4 points ago

Seriously? Nothing gets more entertaining than The Iliad unless of course you can't read.

[–]Bishopkilljoy 2 points3 points ago

No I have read the Iliad, I was making a joke

[–]bookwench 2 points3 points ago

I tried reading the Illiad. It was not entertaining. Have you ever read, say, Watership Downs? Now that was entertaining.

[–][deleted] ago

[deleted]

[–]bookwench 1 point2 points ago

Aaaand goosebumps came out after I'd gotten too old to enjoy them properly. Sadly, not a part of my childhood.

[–][deleted] ago

[deleted]

[–]bookwench 0 points1 point ago

Eh, I had plenty to read. Started on The Hobbit and never really stopped... :)

[–]Dr___Awkward 0 points1 point ago

Really? I found the Iliad to be quite dry, up until the end. Now the Odyssey, on the other hand, that was an excellent book.

[–]letsjustsmoke1 30 points31 points ago

This completely puzzles me

[–]nope_nic_tesla 83 points84 points ago

This was posted in /r/pics earlier, it's a picture of a harvest moon behind the Parthenon. Christians often post pictures of beautiful things in the sky saying "Like this is you see God!". This is a joke making fun of that, because Athena was a Greek god and the Parthenon is on top of the Athenian acropolis.

[–]StickyNiki 11 points12 points ago

Now I don't feel bad for not getting it

[–]lizzardx 5 points6 points ago

Me either, I kept dragging it bigger in RES to see if there was a teeny tiny statue I was missing before I checked and saw that it was in /r/atheism

[–]letsjustsmoke1 0 points1 point ago

got it, thanks man. I must not know enough crazy christians

[–]steveandstuff -2 points-1 points ago

IDK why somebody downvoted this. you get an upvote sir.

[–]JaxRiens -5 points-4 points ago

something secular, athiest or pagan down voted?

('O.0")(||) "Christians" (||)

[–]mselectricocean -1 points0 points ago

Is that the aliens guy? I see the aliens guy.

[–]JaxRiens 0 points1 point ago

yes it is.

[–]mtldude1967 9 points10 points ago

You may have smoked more than 1.

[–]letsjustsmoke1 4 points5 points ago

touche good sir

[–]nomad1287 5 points6 points ago

I Just see pac man

[–]blackgoat9000 8 points9 points ago

Real men believe in Odin.

[–]cynognathus 0 points1 point ago

Perhaps. But if they believed in Odin, then this picture would be depicting Máni for them.

[–]Dr_Dippy 0 points1 point ago

Osiris will see to you when your time comes

[–]jarmrdj61 13 points14 points ago

I am a Christian - how am I checkmated? (I see the picture, but the point eludes me)

[–]JaxRiens 13 points14 points ago*

This is proof of Athena, goddess of wisdom birthed from the head of the Almighty Zeus Olympian, it disproves your one god propaganda!

(basically the joke is this is as valid as any of the "proof of god" nature posts)

[–]jarmrdj61 15 points16 points ago

I understand. Thank you for the explanation.

[–]WhatTheFlux1 2 points3 points ago

I like you :)

[–]jarmrdj61 1 point2 points ago

Thank you...I think... Any particular reason?

[–]colinsteadman 2 points3 points ago

You'll be dead! ...oh sorry, thought I was somewhere else far far away for a moment.

[–]Wargall 1 point2 points ago

(It's a joke)

[–]jarmrdj61 1 point2 points ago

Yep - I got the joke.

[–]chesterriley 0 points1 point ago

I am a Christian - how am I checkmated?

Because the pagans have a Queen able to move anywhere your King can move.

[–]dfektiv 5 points6 points ago

This made me sad. I don't see Athena. My cats name is Athena, and she's at the vet for a big gash on her leg.

[–]tea_wrecks[S] 5 points6 points ago

may Zeus watch over her.

Seriously though, I hope your cat is okay.

[–]FATHERODIN 4 points5 points ago

Don't worry, I got this one bro

[–]Dr___Awkward 0 points1 point ago

Haha, cute. real gods aren't mortal. Zeus FTW.

[–]dfektiv 5 points6 points ago

Thanks. Just picked her up actually. She had tore a hole the size of a nickle to the bone in her leg. She's still groggy, but much better. Though she hates E-collar. Can't fit under the bed.

[–]iDP 0 points1 point ago

For some reason the image of a cat trying to ram itself under a bed wearing one of those big cone collars is both hilarious and sad to me. Glad to hear your cat's okay, I know what it's like having a sick/injured cat.

[–]LordZeus 0 points1 point ago

I'm watching over her.

But seriously too, I hope her cat is healed.

[–]DiscordianStooge 0 points1 point ago

"may Zeus Artemis watch over her."

FTFY

[–]dhicks3 1 point2 points ago

I came here to say that "Athens" and "Athena" are the same in Greeknote , and that Artemis might be "visible" too, in the moon.

Both had already been posted within 15 comments. I think I love you guys.

Maybe you have to disregard a diacritical mark, but it's Greek to me.

[–]likeshotcoffee308 1 point2 points ago

[–]alligatorfight 1 point2 points ago

I would have gone with Apollo, since it's far more relevant.

[–]KevinAlberttheRock 1 point2 points ago

This is the moon. I'm looking at Artemis.

[–]Fairykind 1 point2 points ago

I see Athena and Apollo.

[–]spirit-fox 1 point2 points ago

Saint Seiya ROCKS!!!!!!

[–]rubergly 1 point2 points ago

They say of the Acropolis where the Parthenon is—

[–]dawvi 0 points1 point ago

does it mean I am dyslexic if I spent about a minute looking for the antenna?

[–]geoff11 0 points1 point ago

SPORTS, SPORTS, SPORTS, SPORTS!

[–]SmiVan 0 points1 point ago

...what?

[–]synachynadodiechodie 0 points1 point ago

Stared at it for awhile, actually looking for athena, got scared, checked to see if it was a .gif, then bailed. Couldn't do it. What are we talking about?

[–]Atheris 0 points1 point ago

That's gorgeous!

[–]barongaucho 0 points1 point ago

I see pacman

[–]pleen 0 points1 point ago

[They say of the Acropolis, where the Parthenon is...]http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HUVBXb4XIqE)

[–]Sgt_Insomnia 0 points1 point ago

Seriously question redditors, can anyone else make out a skull on the left side of the moon?

[–]Dr___Awkward 0 points1 point ago

It's human nature to seek out human faces where there are none.

[–]Sgt_Insomnia 0 points1 point ago

I know that, did I say anything about a human face? This is a straight up Death Skull I see

[–]Ryman73 0 points1 point ago

I can clearly see Artemis right there!

[–]BaldOrBread 0 points1 point ago

[–]ailli 0 points1 point ago

Pretty sure that's Wilma Flintstone.

[–]DoctorLost173 0 points1 point ago

You mean Athens? Or the ruin of Athens?

[–]Xx255q 0 points1 point ago

Okay now they can't blame us for benign in the crappy place there in giving retirement before age 50 paid for rest of life was not stable

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point ago

I see Athena and Selene! It just goes to show how Zeus works in mysterious ways!

[–]TheBurningEmu 0 points1 point ago

Yes, but I also see Artemis.

[–]ExodusRex 0 points1 point ago

I fucked a girl In Athens once. Maybe that was her.

[–]Skyscraper_Bedouin 0 points1 point ago

This is so beautiful it reminds me of how awesome god is!

please understand I'm fucking around, but it really is beautiful

[–]_Circlejerk_ 0 points1 point ago

How can I "like" this? Are we on Facebook? wait..is this another reddit repost? aww crap.

[–]firesquasher 0 points1 point ago

"like"? dble checks that im browsing reddit...phew

[–][deleted] -1 points0 points ago

Like if you lack the means to explain how it happened. Isn't that funny? There's a biological process that makes it difficult for people to admit that they're wrong i.e. pride. Too bad there's nothing similar that makes it difficult for people to believe in magic except for, of course, thinking.

[–]ICGraham -1 points0 points ago

Can someone explain

[–]TheyCallMeTomSawyer -1 points0 points ago

Maybe 'Check, Christians...', but as for checkmate, what do the Greek gods/goddessess have to do with Christianity?

[–]troyv21 2 points3 points ago*

christians flipping out about visages of jesus on moon, athena visage seen on moon, if athena is a part of fictional mythology then nope. checkmate, christians.

[–]TheyCallMeTomSawyer 0 points1 point ago

Whatever you said, cool.
