As a type 1 diabetic, I'd like to note how unlikely this situation would be.

[–]chocokel 9 points10 points ago

I second that. For anyone who cares to know, if she were passed out like that, it is a lot more likely that she would need a fast acting sugar (like orange juice or glucose tablets), because her blood sugar would be too low. Insulin would actually make the situation worse.

TLDR: Comic is unrealistic. Feed passed out diabetics sugar, don't give them insulin.

[–]JohnJbananas 10 points11 points ago

So that soda probably would have helped?

[–]chocokel 3 points4 points ago

Yes, that soda would have helped.

[–]DELICIOUS_MANGO 1 point2 points ago

Well, feeding anything to someone who's passed out is a bad idea, that person is gonna have a hard time breathing. What you really need is a shot of Glucagon! Good point though, to raise awareness about not giving fucking insulin to passed out diabetics.

Hey guys, is this a diabetic party??

As long as we're all here, can I get a motion to eliminate Type-2 diabetes from the diabetes family since its, ya know, not really the same thing at all?

edit: Wow, lotta type 2's in the house. It's not the same disease peeps. It should not be called "diabetes." Type 2 is an insulin tolerance that develops over time due to poor nutrition (generally speaking), lack of exercise, and, in some cases, genetic factors. Type 2 can be "cured" through better nutrition, exercise, medication, and, in extreme cases, supplemental insulin. It is not immediately life threatening and does not develop from one day to the next. Type 1 diabetics don't develop the disease over time. Their bodies destroy the insulin producing cells in the pancreas and once that happens the person has a life-threatening condition that can kill them within days or weeks. Type 1 diabetics must inject insulin in order to live. Not the same thing. You wouldn't call someone with a light patch of skin a Type 2 albino just because they have a condition relating to skin pigmentation would you? Maybe that's a bad example. Anyway, Type-2 has nothing to do with the body's inability to produce insulin and therefore needs its own name.

No it doesn't. 'Diabetes' actually has Greek roots which mean 'siphon' or 'to pass through', referring to the excessive urination which is a common symptom. The full name for the disease is actually 'diabetes mellitus' with mellitus referring to the sweet taste of the urine.

Yes the two are different versions of the disease with different pathologies, that's why we have the Type 1 and Type 2 distinctions. That does not mean that Type 2 is not diabetes or that it is not still a serious disease that if poorly managed or undiagnosed can have serious or even life-threatening complications. I also think it is fallacious to say that Type 2 can be 'cured' through better nutrition, etc. It can be managed by these methods, not cured.

Just because one is probably less severe than the other does not mean that Type 2 does not deserve to be recognised. Diabetes may mean something else to you, because of your own experiences with it, but that the meaning you have applied to it, not the meaning of it in the general or indeed the medical population. To give an example, would you say that melanoma isn't cancer because the survival rates are much higher than those for pancreatic cancer?

[–]RawJa777 0 points1 point ago*

Any tolerance can be "managed" by adjusting usage over a period of time. Your body will adjust. That's why former heroin addicts have a tendency to overdose during a relapse. The two conditions have the same symptoms, but they are not the same disease. I'm not saying that Type 2 shouldn't be recognized. I'm saying that it shouldn't be called diabetes. Why? Because we were here first that's why.

For the record (from Wikipedia): Cancer /ˈkænsər/ ( listen), known medically as a malignant neoplasm, is a broad group of various diseases, all involving unregulated cell growth.

Diabetes mellitus, often simply referred to as diabetes, is a group of metabolic diseases in which a person has high blood sugar.

All cancers involve unregulated cell growth. ONLY Type 1 involves autoimmune destruction of insulin-producing beta cells of the pancreas. Type-2 is a metabolic disease. Cancer refers to a common condition (unregulated cell growth). Diabetes refers to a common symptom (high blood sugar) that is caused by two divergent conditions. The conditions shouldn't have the same name.

[–]Snatland 1 point2 points ago

They don't have the same name though. They are called Type 1 diabetes and Type 2 diabetes. That's the differentiation.

Technically diabetes mellitus isn't only type of diabetes either, there is also diabetes insipidus, caused either by the deficiency of or the insensitivity to ADH. It has the word diabetes in there because again, increased urination is a symptom.

They have the same name because they are named after a symptom of the disease, not the cause of it. If you are going to insist that they shouldn't have the same name, then neither should be called diabetes.

[–]RawJa777 1 point2 points ago

Fair enough, and thanks for the perspective. Still, I think that there should be a greater differentiation than naming the conditions Type 1 and 2 as that means absolutely nothing to the vast majority of the population (in my experience - for the record, Type 1 with a Type 1 father living in Type 2 central [San Antonio, TX]).

[–]Onkelffs 0 points1 point ago

Fat people who get type-2 can most of the times cure themselves by losing weight.

Killjoy

[–]Evil_Bonsai 8 points9 points ago

Dude, she's DYING and you're copping a feel?! WTF!?

[–]RawJa777 6 points7 points ago

Giving insulin to a passed out diabetic would kill them faster.

[–]MasterTotebag 0 points1 point ago

This is probably true.

[–]apotheosis247 1 point2 points ago

What about the little black medical book?

I read an article once that said that our brains use segmenting tricks help easily organize information. Categorizing visual stimulus of repetitive images such as doorways and arches is one of these tricks. The reason you forget what you were thinking about once you walk through a doorway is, your brain is gearing up to recall anything you might need to know about the particular room you're entering.

Memento!

[–]hoodie92 1 point2 points ago

I honestly can't believe that you are the only person to have mentioned Memento. I thought if it the second I saw this comic.

[–]DavenIII 0 points1 point ago

I think it's because no one watched the movie, I've brought it up in the company of friends many a time haven't found 1 (besides the one I saw it with) whose seen it or even heard of it.

[–]hoodie92 0 points1 point ago

No I'm pretty sure that Reddit is fairly familiar with Memento. It is a Christopher Nolan film, afterall.

[–]DavenIII 0 points1 point ago

good point :P

I love the last panel. Also his hair is awesome. Reminds me of a certain someone...

[–]Leet_Noob -1 points0 points ago

There was a Cracked article about memory with a study that said walking through doors is a memory eraser.

[–]Tronlet -3 points-2 points ago

This is my fear every time that happens, that something terrible is happening that I just forgot about. Someday I'm going to have to run into the kitchen to get my phone to call the police, and I'll completely go blank as soon as I enter the kitchen.

"I must have been hungry, I guess I'll make a sandwich. OH MY GOD SOMEONE'S IN THE HOUSE"

[–]StewieBanana -3 points-2 points ago

Thanks for explaining the comic as if it was a thought you came up with.

[–]Kevin_Nicolas -2 points-1 points ago

It really isn't that original anyway.
