The picture was taken by Alex Saberi, at Richmond Park.

Here is the Source. [7th picture in "Richmond Park" album]

[–]xxon 76 points77 points ago

The pictures in that album are as beautiful as every goddamn photographer's flash based websites are worthless.

[–]firstcity_thirdcoast 33 points34 points ago

Here is the photographer's collection on a non-Flash website, where you can buy prints of all 248 images.

Here is the page for OP's picture.

[–]XCygon 1 point2 points ago

amazing work.

[–]retardius 2 points3 points ago

This site is the worst, because the pictures are good so I kept going through them despite the ridiculously stupid blur effect, and I got a headache from it.....

[–]fintorro 202 points203 points ago*

[–]7a50n 26 points27 points ago

Somewhere dogs have a hall of records with a plaque on the wall for Fenton the Lab.

[–]fernguts 25 points26 points ago

I just finished 5 straight minutes of coughing, as this video made me inhale the sunflower seeds I was in the process of eating. The title makes it even better.

[–]erin132 8 points9 points ago

Oh god I love that video. Never fails to crack me up!

[–]mindcrack 29 points30 points ago

Were you saving that video, hoarding it over the years as your carpal tunnel set it, browsing reddit until that perfect moment.. that oh so rare alignment of stars... where the exact picture you've hoped for, nay, prayed for all these years finally appeared? If so, you've made me proud boy, PROUD, for this is truly an apt video.

tl;dr: perfect video to this pic

[–]ThatGuyYouKindaKnow 31 points32 points ago

What? You're implying you've NOT heard of this video and that it's a rare jewel a sea of washed up flotsam and jetsam. This video is famous, or is it just so in the UK?

[–]mindcrack 4 points5 points ago

I'm in the US, never seen this video, or heard of Fenton before, but fear not! I will spread the word, for Fenton needs more exposure.

[–]timhettler 14 points15 points ago

The US knows of Fenton.

[–]annafarrisishot 1 point2 points ago

[–]bdogm 11 points12 points ago

Really? This video was front-paged and memed-out a few months ago.

[–]cool_acid 1 point2 points ago

FEEEENTOOOOOON!!!!!1!!

[–]HookDragger 5 points6 points ago

Yeah, if you want to chase them for an hour or more... with him quartering to you, you should be in front of the closer shoulder to get heart/lung instead of just lung/gut as you marked.

edit: Additionally, proper hunter safety training would teach you not to shoot any of them because you can't see what's beyond them due to the slope of the land.

ANY weapon fired here would be considered dangerous/unethical.

[–]HookDragger 1 point2 points ago

Yes, and where you marked the deer would be correct for the quartering away shot... but you invert it for the quartering to.

[–]cfq 8 points9 points ago

I was about to going to ask "is it Richmond park?" as a joke, but I guess it's confirmed that it's the only place where you can find deer.

[–]rock99rock 3 points4 points ago

No.

[–]cfq 5 points6 points ago

Pics or it didn't happen. Every deer photo I've seen was in Richmond park. And Fenton. Relevant: post pic.

[–]FredCompany 2 points3 points ago

Actually there's a deer farm near me. It's not Richmond Park.

[–]IronDiggy 1 point2 points ago

Also no. Signed: Province of Alberta.

New Jersey has over 100,000 white tail deer. http://www.nj.gov/dep/dsr/trends2005/pdfs/wildlife-whitetail.pdf

[–]mozziestix 2 points3 points ago

Thanks for the source. It will come in handy for the eventual "So my friend went camping and woke up and snapped this picture" post.

Edit: reduce dumbness.

[–]jed394 18 points19 points ago

Sometimes i hate this about reddit..... instead of posting to imgur why not just post to the source, or at least try to find the source before posting on reddit. Obviously something this professional is probably not just hanging out on imgur.com for free.......... Instead of trying to get yourself as much rep as possible, try to help out the artist while your at it!

[–]CharonIDRONES 70 points71 points ago

The sheer bandwidth consumed by hitting the front page of reddit can easily take down most sites. This huge amount of bandwidth can be a bad thing too, incurring much higher costs for the website owner. The picture also has a much higher chance of upvotes if posted to imgur due to the prolific use of RES and its image preview feature. Almost always the source is then listed in the comments and recognition is received, usually in a more concise synopsis of the artist than available on their own site and sometimes providing a redditor's personal opinion.

Think what you will but there are quite a few sites that simply can't handle the amount of traffic reddit can throw at it. We don't know the author's financial situation. Personally I believe this is a service to them by not incurring higher running costs and simultaneously increasing exposure. Just my two cents.

[–]chaitan94 8 points9 points ago

And further they removed the watermark at the bottom right. :/

[–]frezik 1 point2 points ago

Also, photographers tend to use flash-based sites, which often make deep linking difficult.

[–]Velingor 3 points4 points ago

Sometimes the OP doesn't know the original source, and sometimes an image is re-hosted because the source site wouldn't be able to handle the traffic a popular post would generate.

[–]jed394 5 points6 points ago

I could understand that, but this happens all the time on reddit. If the site couldn't handle it, then do what chaitan94 did and immediately link to the source. I don't blame the original poster, this happens all the time, but no one gives credit on reddit ever. A simple google.com/image search brings up his site as the first result. I'm just saying share the love with the artist if you are going to post something that isn't yours.

[–]Velingor 0 points1 point ago

no one gives credit on reddit ever

Except people like chaitan94, who are in every thread. Then there's always people like you that say the source should always be stated. Then there's people like me.

[–]jed394 2 points3 points ago

And the reddit world goes round and round....

[–]heygabbagabba 1 point2 points ago

The picture was shopped by Alex Saberi, you mean.

Don't want to sound cynical but nature photos should actually be natural, IMO.

[–]doodleydoo 1 point2 points ago

"Stag Party"

[–]rhue 1 point2 points ago

I asked him to do an AMA here. This guy is a great inspiration for amateur photographers :)

[–]solidfake 1 point2 points ago

Click on the link, open Richmond Park, open this link and listen to it while you enjoy the slideshow with the beautiful scenery.

This is why I love reddit.

[–]Blind-Man 3 points4 points ago

Came in here to post the Afremov, upvotes for you Alex!

[–]TenshiS 3 points4 points ago

Impressive...

[–]Sawgon 10 points11 points ago*

Holy shit, that's beautiful. You don't seem like a novelty account. Please become one.

Edit: As piglizard pointed my_name_is_alex didn't paint that. The real painter is a guy named Leonid Afremov, and apparently he just paints other people's work. But I stand by the fact that I think it's beautiful.

[–]piglizard 41 points42 points ago

Guys...he didn't paint this. It's a semi-famous guy named Leonid Afremov. He churns these out (usually based on other people's photos like this one). He also makes tons of replicates of all of his paintings. I personally think many of his paintings are very beautiful, but I don't like his conceptual ability as an artist.

[–]B-blah 133 points134 points ago

Fenton!..fenton!...OH JESUS CHRIST

[–]down_vote_magnet 23 points24 points ago

The photo was actually taken in Richmond Park too!

[–]lawyerman13 37 points38 points ago

One for each of the bastard children of House Baratheon

[–]YOUR-UNCLE 16 points17 points ago

There probably aren't enough deer in that whole forest.

[–]neutralino 1 point2 points ago

There are sources that suggest he fathered 60 bastards

[–]NoStrangertolove 1 point2 points ago

Well lions caught most of the kids that were born.

[–]frezik 1 point2 points ago

The stag for that shadow tentacle thing is going to have three kinds of rabies.

[–]fixessaxes 329 points330 points ago*

am i the only one who thinks this looks photoshopped? it looks like the same deer walking towards the camera and cut together and the antlers bent around a little bit so they aren't all exactly alike. the picture is from autumn, when 4 bucks would be much less likely to be hanging out together.

[–]jackp0t08 152 points153 points ago

Bucks usually roam alone; I also doubt there would be 4 just hanging out and grazing together.

[–]section111 29 points30 points ago

That's what made me curious too. Wouldn't they be all fighting up in there? We need a deer expert.

[–]spundnix32 45 points46 points ago

Normally, bucks are solitary, at least in the U.S. But apparently this park, which I had never heard of until today, is in the middle of London. The deer seemed to be pretty docile and not afraid of people. Look at this pic with people walking in the background.

Maybe they are fed and the bucks do not have to be competitive. However, I bet they still get pretty rowdy in the fall.

[–]JoeSicbo 25 points26 points ago

"FENTON!!!!!!!"

[–]theunderstoodsoul 3 points4 points ago

It's not quite in the middle of London, Richmond is a pretty westerly suburb, but it is very accessible and very cool being able to visit such a great open green space not too far from the city! Definitely somewhere tourists should go when visiting London.

[–]kevo7777 63 points64 points ago

Iama deer expert... just kidding. Although, I do like to go buck wild

[–]mindcrack 3 points4 points ago

Same here. Well, just at night, when I go buck nekkid!

[–]surfnaked 1 point2 points ago*

If this is late in the season after all the fury dies down, and yes they do hang out together. Herd animals.

edit: although looking at more closely. I think it's a composite. Still cool though. Unless they are quadruplets that managed to survive. Unlikely.

[–]BaconTreasure 1 point2 points ago

I'm no expert, but I am an avid hunter. The likelihood of seeing ONE deer that size takes years of trying and luck. Finding FOUR of these dudes! In one place! Not fighting! I'm supposed to believe that some guy snuck up on these 4 bucks that lived through years of hunting.

[–]GeneralWarts 1 point2 points ago

This guy provided a source below. I was thinking the same thing you guys are.. but that's from our experiences with wild bucks. Once you provide a sanctuary that they can't be hunted I'd imagine their habits change. Here's the wiki on where they are.

[–]DoctorinaBox 1 point2 points ago

Not only that, but they all have the same antler pattern and facial markings.

[–]mehoff88 1 point2 points ago

Bucks do not usually roam alone actually. Besides, those are elk not deer so they would be bulls.

[–]FreddyandTheChokes 36 points37 points ago

Which is too bad, because I think the single shot of the buck in the centre would be better than a composite of 4 together.

[–]HWRYTDY 30 points31 points ago*

Never fear, content aware fill is here.

Although the tool isn't very clever and so if you use it twice it can come up with completely different results.

1st Attempt

2nd Attempt

[–]fixessaxes 24 points25 points ago

that is kind of amazing for an automatic tool

[–]kuphinit 1 point2 points ago

I think it looks great, actually!

[–]crankbait_XL 18 points19 points ago

I was going to say the same thing, I think it is a composite, same buck over and over. Nice work either way

[–]forecastfuture 1 point2 points ago*

I don't think it is the same buck. If you look at their faces and the markings they have are very different. The two on the right have white spots between their eyes (different shapes), the one all the one in the back has white stripes running down from each eye and the second from the left looks like maybe he has a tiny spot between his eyes. Maybe separately photographed, composite bucks, but certainly not the same one.

[–]wsmithe 15 points16 points ago

Yeah I don't think there is a moment that exists in nature where 10-12 point bucks just chill together

[–]ajprax 8 points9 points ago

As someone who's grown up with "points" in the context of games and not hunting it just occurred to me that you could be referring to the number of points on the antlers rather than an arbitrary system for ranking the quality of prospective targets. Am I right?

[–]wsmithe 14 points15 points ago

You are correct. Welcome to 'Merica!

[–]mrgreen4242 2 points3 points ago

There is actually a system for rating deer with points, in addition to the count of antler tines. It's a combination of the number of tines, the width of the overall antler "rack"' the height of the main "beams", and the circumference at various points along the antlers.

[–]Death_To_Your_Family 1 point2 points ago

Gotta get them Boon and Crocketts.

[–]older_soul 7 points8 points ago

Looks unbelievably fake. Seriously

[–]ArtemisSolie 1 point2 points ago

It could be a multiple-exposure photo, compiled in photoshop with slight alterations to the antlers and fur being made...they all look terribly similar, so you could indeed argued that this is a doctored photo, but that shouldn't retract from it. It's a great photo, edited or not.

[–]DeerKiller 1 point2 points ago

First of all, those aren't deer they are actually elk. Elk rut in September, but deer don't rut usually until November. Since this photo looks like it was taken in late October the bull elk have finished rutting and now form bachelor groups.

[–][deleted] 1 point2 points ago

Not same stag, all have uniquely different tines and some have extra "kickers". Stags/Bulls/Bucks will group up in the fall, I have seen as many as 60+/- getting together for one last party before they go nutty with rut.

[–]tonypotenza 2 points3 points ago

[–]noahisaac 1 point2 points ago

And they're all 10 (or some may say 5) point bucks. That would be far too coincidental to have 4 mature bucks with the same number of antler points in a small gathering. Composite photo for sure.

[–]Gorillian 14 points15 points ago

Reminded me of this.

[–]wellhushmypuppies 1 point2 points ago

this definitely is photoshopped because the likelihood of getting a) that many bucks playing together nicely and b) all of whom appear to have the same number of points is, I would think, virtually impossible. That said, it looks like the cover of a jigsaw puzzle box, which is to say, very nice pic. I hope he's this guy, who I used to feed in my backyard. Here's a story about me in Richmond park.

I was working on a short film in Hampton Court house, a PRIVATE SCHOOL, which is this big regal house built by Henry the 8th, in Richmond Park, within the grounds of the bigger Hampton Court Palace. http://www.hamptoncourthouse.co.uk/

Anyway some of our massive 10k lights are outside to beam a crap load of light inside the windows to make it look sunny outside.

There's loads of deer outside, but then I'm helping setting up this light and I turn around and there is this HUGE reddish furred stag standing there. About 4/5 metres away. Just looking at me. Like 'WTF you doing in my stomping ground bitch?'.

We were slightly worried this stag was going to impale us, he wasn't looking very friendly. Bit of nervous laughter and quick movements away and we're back onto the back steps of this building close to the door.

I'm the last one to go back though, and on my way I trip. In this mud wet long grass ground (it had been raining).

I look up and the stag has moved closer, looks down at me, and is like 'it's cool bro, c'mon get up'. I get up slowly and walk back inside, and once we're all inside he turns around and very slowly walks back to his group.

Also this is the back of the school, which means this schools playground at the back of the school, is Richmond park, full of deer.

Happy to say I live near Richmond park.

*TL;DR: Worked on short film in Richmond park, badass stag reminding the crew who's boss in these woods.*

Anyone have a high-res version?

[–]WootyMcBooty 1 point2 points ago

Why is no one else calling bullshit on this? This is so clearly shopped just to put the deer into place its absurd. Look at the pixels!

[–]Wickeman187 1 point2 points ago

This would have been a great pic even without the three extra deer photoshopped in

[–]philmardok 1 point2 points ago

it's all the same deer. just saying

[–]pinkpanthers 1 point2 points ago

Im going to have to call this fake, even after I question the obvious photoshopped look. You would never have FOUR dominant bucks like the one you see in this picture together. Perhaps two, maybe in an extreme account a third close by, during a fall rut fighting for a doe, however a buck this size is rare and usually only 1 per herd of deer.
