This is in the 7th arrondissement of Paris at 29 Avenue Rapp, 75007, Paris France, a few steps from the Eiffel Tower.

[–]buccsmf1 11 points12 points ago

Google face detection win?

[–]starlinguk 0 points1 point ago

Or Google Goggles.

[–]LaoBa 2 points3 points ago

Wikipedia Jules Lavirotte (Architect) The large scale deployment of glazed earthenware on the facade of this building is the first example of its kind in the West. Glazed tiles embedded in the stone and in the bricks are the work of ceramicist Alexandre Bigot; the building proved to be an effective advertisement for his wares. It was very lavishly adorned even by the standards of the many ceramically finished facades that were built in the following years, which were for the most part appointed this way because this was a way to protect and beautify the iron and concrete materials whose use was fast becoming the standard. The building at 29 avenue Rapp also had a highly exotic door frame designed by the sculptor Jean-Baptiste Larrive, and sculpted by Messrs Sporrer, Firmin-Marcelin Michelet, and Alfred Jean Halou

[–]Megatron_McLargeHuge 5 points6 points ago

Do you know what's in the building?

edit: it's apparently still a house.

[–]happy_otter 3 points4 points ago*

I don't, but judging from the pic I'm pretty sure it's just a "normal" residential haussmannian building.

[–]proutproutpidoo 2 points3 points ago

The building is fully art nouveau, nothing hausmannian about it all the way up. In it there are just apartments and unfortunatly the inside, well the stariwells and all, I haven't been in an apartment, really aren't worth the facade.

[–]TheRealFrenchy 1 point2 points ago

The story everyone claims is that it was used as a brothel, but I have found no evidence of that. Now, it's just apartments that are owned by very wealthy people. Think between 10-12k Euros per sqm, so an apartment in that building would easily be in excess of 1m euros. ;)

[–]with_redribbons 0 points1 point ago

Narnia.

[–]Huzie1 1 point2 points ago

All I can do is 20 bucks...

[–]shirleyucantbserious 1 point2 points ago

Thanks :D I might go and visit this place on Sunday, I really have nothing better to do than go and look at pretty doors! Mercy Bucket!

[–]TheRealFrenchy 2 points3 points ago*

If you're in the area, make sure to have lunch at Cafe Constant two streets over. Affordable and the food is outstanding. Address is 139 Rue St. Dominique, lunch menu is around 16 Euros.

The chef, Christian Constant, owns three restaurants next to each other, Cafe Constant is the most relaxed and affordable, but the food is incredible.

[–]shirleyucantbserious 0 points1 point ago

Thanks I shall tell /r/Paris :D

[–]Eponases 73 points74 points ago

An amazing example of art nouveau.

[–]IShouldWorkNow 24 points25 points ago

Indeed. Even though, in fact, Paris has few examples of Art Nouveau in situ, because of its uniform haussmannian design. You're better off in Brussels or Prague.

[–]fredandlunchbox 8 points9 points ago

+1 for Brussels. The Victor Horta buildings were mind blowing. He did a house for a guy there where he designed every single thing, from the door handles to the silverware, the stationary to the couches, the flower vases to the carpets. Very impressive.

[–]go_boy 13 points14 points ago

You are likely thinking of Hotel Tassel/Tassel House?

It's the most beautiful place in the world to me. I have the entryway tilework tattooed on my back. :)

[–]niperwiper 4 points5 points ago

Why the fuck isn't this a map on a tactical FPS game yet? I know the designers would LOVE to have a go at this.

[–]fredandlunchbox 2 points3 points ago

Actually I wasn't. I can't remember the name of the one I'm thinking of, but it's not there anymore. It was destroyed in the 50's during an era of modernization and all the pieces were sold off. There was an exhibit about it at the fine art museum while I was there that described the process from start to end with drawings, furniture, etc. Horta was amazing, far more interesting than a lot of more famous architects, IMO, and still rarely gets recognition. Mucha made nouveaux paintings. Horta made entire nouveaux buildings.

[–]itsthenewdan 1 point2 points ago

Mucha didn't just make paintings, he also designed furniture, jewelry, and housewares. His documents decoratifs project was an all-inclusive vision of interior design.

[–]fredandlunchbox 1 point2 points ago

TIL. Still, Horta did a couple all inclusive visions inside AND outside. I like Mucha too, but I think it's crazy he's so much more famous than Horta.

[–]itsthenewdan 0 points1 point ago

Certainly underrated. I wasn't aware of Horta before, but after a cursory search I'm very impressed- his work is phenomenal.

[–]go_boy 0 points1 point ago

I love Horta. Off to research this building I know nothing about! :)

[–]fredandlunchbox 2 points3 points ago

Yeah, I'm trying to find the name. The museum had an offsite location that they were reassembling the facade in. Quite an endeavor.

Edit: Found it. Hôtel Aubecq. Google image search it and you can see the reconstruction of the facade.

[–]iancole85 1 point2 points ago

Wow. Fairly amazing.

[–]LaoBa 1 point2 points ago

Yes it's gorgeous. A must-see in Brussels if you like architecture.

[–]Frederic54 9 points10 points ago

or in Nancy

[–]neuromonkey 2 points3 points ago

I was in Nancy once. Hot.

[–][deleted] 1 point2 points ago

She. Puts. Out.

[–]damsontree 2 points3 points ago

Most definitely Prague, it's an amazing city, but it's going to be because it's Mucha's old residence. Tallinn's meant to be beautiful for Art Nouveau too!

edit - I R good at spelling.

[–]canhazbeer 7 points8 points ago

Thanks for pointing out the style. I'm pretty ignorant of art and architectural styles, so I googled "art nouveau" and it's some of the most amazing stuff I've ever seen. I can't believe the style had its heyday around 100 years ago. It looks simultaneously ancient and new, I would have had a lot of trouble guessing the time period. I want to make my house look like this.

Also, at a [5]. I'm hoping my enthusiasm remains when I get back to [0].

[–]SizeableSac -1 points0 points ago

Directed by Guillermo del Toro

[–]318Charger 0 points1 point ago

upvote for stylistic identification

[–]neuromonkey 0 points1 point ago

It doesn't look new to me.

[–]stanfan114 0 points1 point ago

I don't know whether to open it or make love to it.

[–]Illuminox 8 points9 points ago

Is there a Door Porn subreddit for this? If not, there needs to be one.

[–]FlaviusValerius 1 point2 points ago

[–]happy_otter 0 points1 point ago

Count me in.

[–]razzo 0 points1 point ago

YES! spread the word!

[–][deleted] 3 points4 points ago

I live 5 minutes from there :D

[–]Jer_Cough 2 points3 points ago

By foot or by 747? It makes a difference man! It makes a difference!!

[–]snellbag 4 points5 points ago

For some reason I'm reminded of Le Café de L'Enfer - shame it's not around anymore

[–]crzydymnd 4 points5 points ago

Could the architect have been Antonio Gaudi?
This looks remarkably like his style. Barcelona hosts many of his buildings.

[–]zedee 1 point2 points ago

Upvote for naming Gaudí! But no, as a Barcelona dweller I can assure you he didn't build anything in Paris.

This is an artistic and architectonic style known as Art Nouveau, also known as Jugendstil.

In Barcelona this style had its own developement, known as Modernisme.

[–]ossumpossum 37 points38 points ago

I see a penis.

The building used to be a brothel. It was meant to look like a penis.

[–]IShouldWorkNow 6 points7 points ago

Damn. You're right.

[–]Radico87 3 points4 points ago

You know that photo that can be a bunny or a duck, or the other that can be an old crone or young lady?

Well, this can be Darth Vader or a penis.

[–]sinfulcolors 2 points3 points ago

I didn't...but now I do. Thanks

[–]gx6wxwb 2 points3 points ago

I see a screaming alien head.

[–]brakedust 1 point2 points ago

First thing I saw. Quite the penis of a door, complete with testes.

[–]Nealos 0 points1 point ago

First thing I saw, it has everything even the little slit in the head to represent the opening

[–]apple_kicks 0 points1 point ago

visitors always wondered why the owner burst into a fit of giggles after they said 'can I come in?'

[–]Khiraji 0 points1 point ago

Unsee it, I cannot.

[–]bloopy4 2 points3 points ago

Made by the man who can punch the hardest.

[–]SurprizFortuneCookie 1 point2 points ago

I barely remember that reference.

[–]MrGoodbytes 2 points3 points ago

Reminds me of Giger.

[–]foodiste 2 points3 points ago

I love art nouveau. It was such a great, and sadly short lived burst of artistic creativity and imagination

[–]xampl9 1 point2 points ago

I think it went away partly because carving something like this is freaking expensive.

That being said, I just added this to my post win-the-lottery plans.

[–]ShutupBiz 2 points3 points ago

Reminds me of Pans Labyrinth!

[–]starlinguk 0 points1 point ago

Thanks ¬_¬

[–]iheartbeer 2 points3 points ago

The building is amazing as well. Here are a few more photos of the exterior.

[–]Zipwang5555 3 points4 points ago

This building wants to eat me.

[–]AnarkeIncarnate 1 point2 points ago

But where is "De 'ouse wit de red door?"

[–]frazaod 1 point2 points ago

I took a picture of this exact door when I was in Paris when I was about 15 (23 now). Totally blows my mind to see it on here.

[–]gnarlystar 0 points1 point ago

I also have a picture of myself and my mother in front of this door when we went when I was 16. The pic took forever to get because people kept coming in and going out. It is one of my favorites. :)

[–]Elevoz 1 point2 points ago

For some reason this kind of reminds me of Pan's Labyrinth.

[–]ohhstuffnfluff 1 point2 points ago

LADY PARTS?! Starting from the bottom center, that is definitely some lady junk, above the (beautiful) wrought iron denote a long slender mid-section, ribs on either side, the ovals are indicative of breasts, complete with shells as nipples and more swirling wrought iron to suggest the fullness of breasts. To top it of, the keynote is a detailed female bust.

I know that art is constantly filled with sex and bodies, but would anyone happen to know if this door is in reference to some particular figure? Also, am I the only one who sees it?

[–]bikepoet 0 points1 point ago

Used to be a brothel. Makes sense.

[–]jiayo 1 point2 points ago

I see a big alien face screaming at me. anyone else? :D But seriously, amazing detail and craftsmanship to be sure.

[–]Caiur 1 point2 points ago

It's 2:04 AM here and I'm a bit drunk; I first read it as 'Amazing Persian door'. I clicked the link and thought to myself: "Wtf, that's not a Persian-style door.' >_<

[–]jackincaves 1 point2 points ago

I'm more interested by the little door to the left.

[–]chodechugging 1 point2 points ago

The guy must have been one hell of a strong puncher.

[–]Rocketshipz 1 point2 points ago

Somes infos from a french guy : It used to be owned by a ceramiste (the one who use ceramic) and it is actually an incredible showroom of all his skill. Its only architecte work btw, but the room is an incredible showroom. The building is from 1900 and yes its a regular residential building. In won a price back in the 1900's: Best Paris frontpage building. :)

[–]isleshocky 1 point2 points ago

Looks like an Alien.

[–]hostergaard 1 point2 points ago

Do anyone else see a spiders face in the thumbnail?

I can give away every lectures I had this year about Art Nouveau (in french). It really is interesting, even if the ornements are a bit too much for me.

[–]superanth 0 points1 point ago

I would not go in there.

[–]Shooper_Scooper 0 points1 point ago

I literally made an awe noise when I opened this image. I didn't even know I had an awe noise! ಠ_ಠ

It was like a weird exhale that was really loud, kinda like I was trying to frost up some piece of invisible glass.

oh art nouveau, how I long to live inside your flowing curves, bask in your elegance, silently observe the passerby, remembering fondly a period that embodied emotion, depth, class; a world since forgotten...

[–]onlynickleft 0 points1 point ago

Beautiful. It sort of reminds me of the rear doorway of La Sagrada Familia in Barcelona by Gaudi.

[–]bikepoet 1 point2 points ago

Source? Or mindless drivel?

[–]mrpopenfresh -1 points0 points ago

I lived in Montreal for 3 years. I've met frenchmen from pretty much every part of France. In general, Québec and France have a pretty tight connection, and I have had good friends from France my whole life, no to mention family. It's just a cultural aspect you know, from cooking to architecture there's always some frivolous add on to it. Basically; they fuck around the bush. They are quite eloquent though.

[–]Tron-Gorf -4 points-3 points ago

But it has a rude, stinky guy behind it.

[–]NonSequiturEdit 0 points1 point ago

You're just jealous of my door.

[–]Pandacious -1 points0 points ago

I used to live in France and I walked past this door quite a few times. Imagine my surprise to see it here on Reddit after all these years.
