I bet $10 they'll never be able to winch that ship up.

[–]appletart 26 points27 points ago

Don't be silly - it's far too heavy! - The carrier floats on water because the water is lighter, so your best bet is to winch up the surrounding light water so the carrier can float up to you.

[–]AnHonestQuestions 5 points6 points ago

I am the only one who doesn't understand why they dont fill the carrier with water? The hydrogen in the water is lighter than air, so it will float.

[–]appletart 4 points5 points ago

Yes, but, for every part hydrogen there is an equal part oxygen making water far, far too flammable to be used on a carrier in this way.

[–]AnHonestQuestions 5 points6 points ago

You make a good point. We should add more water to put out the fire.

[–]beerme72 1 point2 points ago

I think alcohol would be better....it floats on water too.

[–]appletart 4 points5 points ago

I can think of better uses...

[–]Bignut_Squirrel 2 points3 points ago

Oil wont mix with water, so if they coat the entire ship in oil it will ride on top of the water.

[–][deleted] 8 points9 points ago

And even if they are able, the winch is not attached at the center of gravity of the ship and all the planes will fall off the deck when the deck tilts.

[–]running_to_the_hills 8 points9 points ago

but planes fly, so when the boat tips over the planes will stay in the air.

[–][deleted] 1 point2 points ago

I think they're trying to winch the helo down.

[–]Oed0 1 point2 points ago

They're waiting for the green flash, then it'll all make sense.

[–]Piker10 1 point2 points ago

of course they wont winch it. it has hidden hovercraft fans. its a hellicarrier

United States Navy personnel engage in Special Patrol Insertion/Extraction (SPIE) training between a Sikorsky SH-60 Seahawk helicopter and the USS Dwight D. Eisenhower (CVN-69). SPIE involves either a person or goods being lowered or raised from a helicopter via a cable above terrain on which landing would be difficult

I'm a bot. [Feedback]

[–]PurpleCapybara 0 points1 point ago

"landing would be difficult"
But at least it would be cushioned by the giant dump you just took after seeing what you're about to do.

[–]Mailvorez 9 points10 points ago

Aww man I'm such a pro at this game.

[–][deleted] 1 point2 points ago

Where can I play that?

[–]lakerswiz 0 points1 point ago

Not with a high score of 91 ;)

[–]SuperNintendoChalmer 29 points30 points ago

Heh, 69.

[–]ogin 9 points10 points ago

Coolest picture I've seen in a long....today.

[–]kickaholeinya 9 points10 points ago

The valet parking guy on that ship is really good at his job.

[–]Salmonelongo 3 points4 points ago

Seriously, they park their jets like assholes!

[–][deleted] 2 points3 points ago

From experience I know that guy in the chopper can jump out and land in the cockpit of one of the airplanes if he presses 'E' quick enough.

[–]Plethorian 6 points7 points ago

1 lonely EA-6B.

[–]hman2853 2 points3 points ago

where is the below deck hangar access, anyone?

[–]Tashre 5 points6 points ago

I could be wrong, but I believe the yellow dotted trapezoids outline the elevators.

[–]machoish 4 points5 points ago

You're right, 2 in front of the superstructure, one behind, and one on the port side

[–]zombiejesus85 2 points3 points ago

Dubai, Dubai, Dubai (vfa 143)

[–]machoish 1 point2 points ago

I was there too (VAQ-140) I can't remember if 2007 was the deployment where we had the first stop in Naples or if that's the one we got screwed out of Marseilles because of bad weather

[–]armor3r 0 points1 point ago

I was topside po for the arresting gear for the deployment with the bad weather in Marseilles.

[–]Simon_mac 2 points3 points ago

Is this the ship parked off the coast of Fremantle, Western Australia, at the moment?

[–]ghosttrainhobo 2 points3 points ago

No. The Eisenhower is based in Norfolk, Virginia - on the Atlantic coast. You're looking at my old ship the USS Carl Vinson. We visited Freemantle back in '90 and I have many fond memories of the visit.

edit: confirmed.

[–]Pukacz80 2 points3 points ago

WOW so now people get karma for linking wikipedia picture of the day?

[–]TheLoneHoot 1 point2 points ago

Oh nooooooo! All that precious, precious karmaaaaaaaaaaaa!

(karma may be redeemed at the Reddit gift shop in the lobby)

[–]armor3r 2 points3 points ago

This is a picture from the 2007 deployment of the Ike, I was on the boat for that deployment. Proof: That is the helmet of an HS-5 Nightdipper Aircrewman, look it up.

[–]TheLoneHoot 0 points1 point ago

So what's up with the SH-3 on the deck then? I thought those were retired in '06.

(Also, I never get used to just how small E2Cs look compared to other aircraft.)

[–]armor3r 0 points1 point ago

I think you mean s3b Viking, which was indeed retired, that ugly bitch by elevator 1 is an ea6b prowler.

[–]TheLoneHoot 1 point2 points ago

No, I'm talking about the helo with the folded rotors on the port side. I know what S3s, E2Cs, and EA6Bs are.

[–]armor3r 0 points1 point ago

Sh 60 seahawk

[–]TheLoneHoot 0 points1 point ago

Right you are - on second look that is indeed what it is - only four blades folded back. Even zoomed in it's a little hard to see. I was wondering why it seemed so small (thinking it was a Sea Knight).

SH-60s (and P3s) are overhead here in JAX all day and night. Surprised I didn't immediately think that that's what it was.

[–]I_DRINK_PERIOD_BLOOD 5 points6 points ago

The water is beautiful in this picture.

[–]AcousticPoontang 11 points12 points ago

Would-- would you, um...consider drinking that instead? I know there's salt, but...

[–]Waffles81 2 points3 points ago

maybe it's just a painted wall?

[–]wizz891 1 point2 points ago

This is awesome! What are you training to be?

[–]TheLoneHoot 1 point2 points ago*

the type of helo on the deck was retired in 2006 - my guess is OP isn't training for anything.

EDIT: My mistake, I thought the helo was an old SH-3, but it's an SH-60 which is still quite current. (downvoting myself, to sort of "make it right").

[–]AdamDe27 1 point2 points ago

Dwight D Eisenhower -- Good looking ship

[–]bdemented 1 point2 points ago

Got so dizzy I almost fell off my chair looking at this. I like to think of myself as a badass. Apparently not.

[–]envysiblegirl 0 points1 point ago

Don't feel bad. I got sweaty palms from it. NOPE NOPE NOPE.

[–]Linktank 1 point2 points ago

What is the white line in the picture?

[–]jezustits 1 point2 points ago

What do they do to keep the jets protected from salt water exposure?

[–]Texian83 2 points3 points ago

The answer is: Manual labor... I worked in this squadron, and I can attest that the helicopters are incredibly labor intensive. There are many different levels of inspections and cleanings that each helicopter has to go through in a life cycle.

[–]flampoo 0 points1 point ago

Clean them, store them in the hanger when not in use.

[–]WreckerCrew 1 point2 points ago

This wouldn't actually be a training mission. The planes/copters would be below deck or in the air. More then likely this was done for a photo shot or other PR mission.

Still, awesome shot.

[–]bassguitarbill 1 point2 points ago

It's been a while since I've gotten vertigo from a picture. Awesome.

[–]qrtr_inch_seam 0 points1 point ago

Glad to know I'm not the only person puking at their desk.

[–]alextron21 1 point2 points ago

The carrier number...69

[–]hamtoucher 1 point2 points ago

<geek> That picture really shows up the difference between the F/A-18C/Ds and the updated F-18E/F Super Hornets. I hadn't realised how much larger and squarer the Super Hornet is! </geek>

[–]TheLoneHoot 0 points1 point ago

Yeah, the E/Fs got about a 20% increase in wing area if I'm not mistaken (and I certainly could be - my memory's been faulty lately), and of course the angular intakes and whatnot that you're talking about.

[–]arup02 0 points1 point ago

Awesome picture, thanks!

[–]dcmacdaddy 0 points1 point ago

Training for what? Are you in the helicopter or on the desk of the ship?

[–]anchortoyou 0 points1 point ago

Awyea Carriers!

[–]raknor88 0 points1 point ago

that would be awesome falling from the plane attached to the line

[–]TheLoneHoot 0 points1 point ago

helicopter

[–]zvuk 0 points1 point ago

At first i thought he is trying to piss on a battleship.

[–]this_sort_of_thing 0 points1 point ago

If the deck is so crowded by parked jets how do they get space to takeoff and land

[–]hamtoucher 1 point2 points ago

There are hangers under the deck, so they would move them down there to make space - the yellow outlined areas at the top edge are lifts that they use to move kit below.

[–]this_sort_of_thing 0 points1 point ago

Oh, I see. Cheers!

[–]Wynns 0 points1 point ago

I thought I was looking at a diorama or something. And the training going on was some sort of small-scale exercise for learning how to pack the deck with aircraft using little models. I couldn't account for the big wheel on the left of the photo... until it hit me that was I was looking at was perspective, not a diorama.

[–]KiloNiggaWatt 0 points1 point ago

Why are all the planes on deck?

[–]raskolnikov- 2 points3 points ago

Also, that isn't ALL the planes. There are lots below deck, as far as I know. I think a supercarrier carries about 90 aircraft.

[–]Texian83 0 points1 point ago

correct, there are also more helicopters in the hangar bay too

[–]armor3r 0 points1 point ago

77

[–]Texian83 1 point2 points ago

Could be several reasons. When the picture was taken I can almost 100% guarantee that they are not in a combat zone. They could be transitioning to or from one, or they could be out on a training mission. It is not common for the helicopters to take a photographer in the air with them, so its likely that it is a pre-planned PR photo-shoot. I know that a few year before I cruised with HS-5 there was a Discovery Channel film crew that shot some documentary footage on the Ike. I dont know if this was from them or not, but I guess its possible.

[–]griffith12 0 points1 point ago

I wish that was a ride that I could pay for at an amusement park.

[–]Thabass 0 points1 point ago

If you were the enemy, how would that NOT scare the piss out of you.

[–]friesen 0 points1 point ago

Came here looking for Hunt for Red October reference... I am dissapoint.

[–]waaaghbosss 0 points1 point ago

I don't see a mop bucket.

[–]Anderlan 0 points1 point ago

Which rageface is that on his helmet??

[–]shivering 0 points1 point ago

So much nope.
