I came here thinking this would be the top comment ... not disappointed at all.

[–]pm079 0 points1 point ago

Isn't there a website dedicated to hosting all the QI episodes?

[–]Ginnigan 1 point2 points ago

There's a YouTube channel. Some of the videos have been taken down, but most are still there :) I think I've watched them all there! Could never thank the uploader enough.

[–]Tactful 1 point2 points ago

There are plenty of YouTube channels with all the XL episodes. BBC doesn't file DMCA because QI isn't really that profitable outside the UK, or indeed hugely profitable at all. It's more of an art show.

[–]17Hongo 0 points1 point ago

Fuck - that's what I was here for. Take my upvote.

[–]123ada321 -1 points0 points ago

"Thats the acropolis!" "Not another cousin" "I never said a thing!! Who is this thea cropolis?"........I want someone to understand that referance sooo bad

Greece doesn't seem to get much love here. Upvote for a beautiful picture

[–]JoeyBurson 0 points1 point ago

Why is the Parthenon so FUCKED?!

[–]hobbes78[!] 2 points3 points ago

When Greece was a British colony, the Brits used it as a magazine; an accident ended up causing it to explode...

[–]dacoobob 33 points34 points ago

The Parthenon is in ruins today not because it's ancient, but because the Ottomans used it as an ammunition dump during a war against Venice in 1687, and it blew up, destroying the roof and much of the decorative sculptures.

[–]xNIBx 5 points6 points ago

And then some asshole british went in, chopped pieces from it and stole them. You can see those abutated pieces in the British Museum under the name "Elgin Marbles".

Think about it. Someone went and sawed pieces from it and now those pieces are exhibited in the British Museum. It's as if they are celebrating the fact that they butchered it. And they refuse to return them to Greece.

[–]SoSp 0 points1 point ago

The whole (and I mean the whole) face of the Parthenon is placed in the British Museum of Natural History in London.

[–]layendecker 0 points1 point ago

It is actually in the British Museum. The Natural History museum is for natural things.

[–]SoSp 0 points1 point ago

I stand corrected. Apologies.

[–]layendecker 1 point2 points ago

No need to apologise, it is an easy mistake to make what with all the museums we have in London.

Oh and if you are ever in town and want to mooch around more Empire pillaged treasures from afar the V&A Museum comes highly recommended.

[–]gianna_in_hell_as 2 points3 points ago

Yep, a Venetian, aptly named Morosini, was the one to blow it up.

[–][deleted] 1 point2 points ago

Those ruins are full of a rich, awe-inspiring, and moving history of triumph and defeat and all of the conflict and violence in between. It's mostly in ruins now, material and immaterial, because it's been subject to directionless reconstruction for the better part of the last half-century and far poorer quality reconstruction in the early part of the 20th century. I went there in February; I left disappointed and disheartened. It was a truly sorry sight to see.

[–]JoshSN 0 points1 point ago

It looks kinda sorry in the picture, too.

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point ago

First thing I noticed was the structure that looks like a crane just to the left of the Parthenon. Right in the centre of the image - it speaks volumes about the Acropolis.

[–]Aiconic 41 points42 points ago

This isnt photoshop. You can achieve this effect with a large zoom lense and zooming in on a distant object on the horizon. Its quite effective. The trick is to get as far away from what you want to photograph as possible.

There is a common misconception that the moon gets large on the horizon but that is not true, that is an illusion

[–]Shitler 39 points40 points ago

As an alternative explanation, it's possible that the Earth was shrunk for the duration of the photo.

[–]Jackstick 13 points14 points ago

Honey...

[–]4everadrone 1 point2 points ago

You're so full of Shitler..

[–]Team_Braniel 6 points7 points ago

The moon is approximately 30 arc-minutes across when viewed from earth.

This picture fits horizontally approximately 4 of those moons. Making the horizontal view roughly 2 degrees.

A 35mm camera with a 800mm lens will have a horizontal view of about 2.5 degrees. Or basically "5 moons".

So this is my diagnosis for this image:

It was shot with a 800mm lens and then cropped by about 30 arc-minutes. (the width of one moon)
-or-
It could have been shot with a non-fixed telephoto lens, with the lens positioned somewhere around 1000mm.

It would be possible to learn the dimensions of the Parthenon and from that derive the angular size correlation of it and the moon in this image to find out the exact size of the telephoto and from that you could tell how far away from the Parthenon the photographer was. I'm just not THAT bored at the moment :P

[–]Aiconic 3 points4 points ago

Math, it works bitches. Im too tired to try it. Cause I actually do have a floor plan and dimension of the parthenon around somewhere.

[–]Kakofoni 1 point2 points ago

You get 8 upvotes for your time consuming reasoning and logic, while the one with 40 says it's because the Earth was shrunk. It's a tough world, Team_Braniel.

[–]Team_Braniel 0 points1 point ago

Its cool bro. I learned the moon size thing a long time ago, did a science project as a kid to try and prove the earth was visibly larger at the horizon, so I used a camera to photograph it on its trip across the sky. Then learned Arc minutes/seconds and such. Sure I found out my hypothesis was wrong, but I learned the size of the moon.

When ever I see these giant moon photos its always fun to come in and say "1200mm lens, photographer shooting from 150 meters away" and then back it up with math.

So yeah, didn't have to research it, just knew it already.

I should also add its totally possible to get that photo with a <600mm lens, you'd just have to crop the shit out of it and the Parthenon will look larger. Hence why I said I'd have to know the dimensions of the building to calculate the exact size of the lens.

[–]teganyavo 8 points9 points ago

Yep, it only looks bigger when low because there are trees and buildings to compare it to, unlike when it's high up in the sky.

Next time a low moon looks really big, turn around, bend over, and look at it upside-down through your legs. It looks normal

[–]Krushed_RED_pepperR 8 points9 points ago

And kiss your arse goodbye.

[–][deleted] 3 points4 points ago

Coincidentally, doing this may also result in you Mooning someone.

[–]Team_Braniel 0 points1 point ago

Or, if you dont want to look THAT silly, just hold up your pinky finger at arms length. The moon will be -about- the size of your pinky finger nail.

Do this when it looks huge and low on the horizon and it will blow your mind. (incredible shrinking moon)

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point ago

This is exactly the misconception Aiconic was speaking of. It's the combination of distance from the object on the ground, and the lens used... nothing more, nothing less.

[–]teganyavo 1 point2 points ago

Uh.. yeah? I wasn't disagreeing with him. That's why I started with "Yep". Why does every post on reddit have to be a battle to see who can be most pedantic

[–]teganyavo 0 points1 point ago

omg it's menocu, I am sorry for questioning your pedantry great leader

crosses arms over chest

[–]FantomEx 4 points5 points ago

If you were standing where the photo was taken, the Parthenon would look to be about the size of a quarter held at arms length. Just like the moon does.

[–]cpolito87 4 points5 points ago

It's quite literally called the Moon Illusion.

[–]LikeASimile 0 points1 point ago

Shit, that's smart.

See a lot of binary sunsets, do you?

edit: found another

and another

[–]Aiconic 31 points32 points ago

Its a photography trick, other post in this thread explains it but its essentially just being miles away from the acropolis and taking a photo of it extremely zoomed in

[–]alreadytakenusername 14 points15 points ago

Exactly. This is the technique documentary filmmakers often use when they filming the sunset of African Savannah.

[–]layendecker 1 point2 points ago

This is my favourite use of this technique in film or photography.

[–]WiteOut 6 points7 points ago

Wow TIL. Thanks!

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point ago

Thanks! I came in here knowing it was a photography trick, but just couldn't figure it out.

[–]Kertelen 0 points1 point ago

No, this must be a GTA: Athens screenshot.

[–]berrausmaximus8 15 points16 points ago

Just think that a thousand years ago people were looking at the moon in that same position past the Parthenon in Ancient Greece.

[–]benisanerd 13 points14 points ago

2400+ years ago. Fucking crazy.

[–]Btrbakedpotato 2 points3 points ago

Came here to say this. Blows my mind.

[–]MrNomadic 4 points5 points ago

The photographer is Chris Kotsiopoulos I believe. Here is a gallery of photos from his website. I've seen some others posted on reddit before

[–]geoponos 2 points3 points ago

I am here all my life. It never stops to amaze me. But it's kind of sad nowadays because noone has the time to just watch it...

[–]SPAtreatment 6 points7 points ago

Looking at the thumbnail, I thought this was a picture taken on Tatooine.

[–]ashleyamdj 1 point2 points ago

That's exactly what I thought as well. I saw the word Parthenon and thought, "What? That's not right..."

Awesome pic, too.

[–]Ocrasorm 9 points10 points ago

Wow. Is that real? Amazing.

[–]RandyMachoManSavage 3 points4 points ago

Nature is incredible.

I'm running out of backgrounds to change. I'll have to buy iPads and laptops just to keep up. Damn you, nature!

[–]hullobirdy 8 points9 points ago

Just imagine it in it's full glory with the same back drop. Epic.

[–]Parthenonn 2 points3 points ago

It would have been amazing. I really really wish I could have seen it in its prime.

[–]Btrbakedpotato 2 points3 points ago

Would definitely go see ancient Greece if I had a time machine.

[–]frapawhack 2 points3 points ago

With the thirty foot tall gold painted statue of Athena inside.

[–]haiku_robot 7 points8 points ago

Just imagine it
in it's full glory with the
same back drop. Epic.

[–]ProfessorHoneycutt 2 points3 points ago

Hey, haiku robot!

Haven't seen you in a while.

Tell me, how are things?

[–]Smackaho 4 points5 points ago

Absolutely stunning. I could stare at this photo for hours.

[–]Cuzimwhite 4 points5 points ago

I would have love to seen that view back when that was first put to use.

[–]Parthenonn 2 points3 points ago

Image saved. I love the Parthenon, its an amazing structure and the mythology behind it is fantastic. Do you have a higher quality pic for a desktop?

[–]TakemUp 2 points3 points ago

Fun fact: The Parthenon is not actually square, they knew it would look crooked if they built it perfectly square so the top is angled. I was always fascinated by that.

[–]Jo-sua 2 points3 points ago

looks like an old bank

[–]ckallas2 4 points5 points ago

I've been there!

What surprised me the most was the complete lack of warning signs. Turns out that in Greece you are generally responsible for your own actions so doing something dumb (like leaning too far over the edge of the acropolis and falling) is your own damn fault.

[–]Obazda 6 points7 points ago

i think that is normal. We don't need warnings á la "Caution: the beverage you're about to enjoy is extremely hot" on everything.

[–]SoSp 2 points3 points ago

In Greece we really are big supporters of the Darwin awards. If you do something incredibly stupid and die is your own fault.

I remember as a kid we used to go to Areopagus and sit at the edge with our legs dangling off it. A simple push (and we were play-fighting a lot when we were kids) would suffice.

Yet we were 14 and we had the common logic that "jumping-pushing someone off the edge of a cliff" = bad.

[–]Obazda 0 points1 point ago

The Russian kids must be the undisputed winners of these Awards, then!

[–]arienh4 5 points6 points ago

I was there mere days ago. This really surprised me too. They actually allow you to sit on a wall whose other side holds a 100 feet drop.

[–]geoponos 5 points6 points ago

And this is weird because...?

[–]ckallas2 0 points1 point ago

It's not weird; it is different from the US. In the US the place is responsible for its patron's safety.

[–]geoponos 0 points1 point ago

So you have signs in every inch of the Grand Canyon? Because Parthenon is at the middle of a hill. You can't fell unless you go half a mile away from it. So unless you wanted signs across the whole perimeter of the hill, I don't get what is your criticism about.

[–]ckallas2 0 points1 point ago

It wasn't a criticism, just an observation.

[–]gianna_in_hell_as 2 points3 points ago

LOL, I've been so many times with friends and visitors and I never noticed. The most nerve-wracking experience was visiting with my athletes when I was a volunteer in the Athens Paralympics. There was a designated path for wheelchair users but of course they wouldn't use it and I kept having to chase after them to make sure none of them would fall. (just 2 of them but those buggers were fast.)

[–]FattyMcButterstick 1 point2 points ago

Under the red hot moon

[–]OzymandiasReborn 1 point2 points ago

And you wonder why they made sacrifices...

[–]LonelyOnNaxos 1 point2 points ago

What makes the moon look so huge?

[–]MinkOWar 3 points4 points ago

Perspective and a big-ass telephoto lens. The further you are from the parthenon, the smaller it gets, but the relative size of the moon does not change (it is far, far too far away), it would not noticably change if you were on the other side of the world, let alone the city. Thus, you just need a telephoto lens that crops the field of view to fill the image with the moon, or at least enough that you can crop the resulting image to this shot, then you just move until the parthenon is small enough.

(obviously, shots like this require careful planning and prior scouting of the location, and research into the date when the moon with intersect with the parthenon from that location - or blind luck, but much more likely the planning).

Want to see this effect with any object? Put an object on one side of the room, and a second object in the middle (on a table or something so you can line the objects up like the moon and parthenon). Takea picture closer to the middle object, and the further object will appear smaller in the image, but if you zoom in and take a picture from across the room, the middle object will be relatively smaller appearing, and the further relatively larger, than it did before. (relative to each other, that is)

[–]MinkOWar 0 points1 point ago

Actually, I went ahead and did the experiment I stated below, here's the result: Perspective and Scale

[–]MitchShredder 1 point2 points ago

WEREWOLVES OF ATHENS!

[–]clamdog 1 point2 points ago

A red moon rises. Blood has been spilled this night.

[–]StuffHobbes 0 points1 point ago

[–]TehKoreanGuy 1 point2 points ago

Funny. Here's a post I saved from r/pics from a few months ago.

[–]DHumefan 1 point2 points ago

I've been there. Feelsgoodman.jpg

[–]foxchildsunday 1 point2 points ago

Cant believe its still under construction. Amazing place, can't wait to go back.

[–]scubdub 1 point2 points ago

I like this picture because it wasn't made with digital trickery or expensive equipment. It was made by capturing a moment at the right at the right time with a nice perspective. Good on you

[–]cannotlogon 1 point2 points ago

Best description of Athens: Detroit with the Parthenon.

[–]DaGyani 1 point2 points ago

I just realized ancient greece could make an awesome setting for an Assassains Creed game

[–]iDontShift 1 point2 points ago

visiting Greece changed my mindset, things are measured in thousands of years over there, in addition some of the ruins use advanced techniques that we still can't replicate today. the seams between the stones at the temple of apollo are so perfect with eyes closed you cannot feel the seam with your finger...

tl;dr i gained huge amount of respect for our ancestors after visiting greece

[–]crj123082 1 point2 points ago

If the crane bothered you like it did me, here ya go.

[–]Feveria 1 point2 points ago

Red moon? Ares is happy

[–]DubstepGod 4 points5 points ago

I read Pantheon first.

[–]underdoglady 2 points3 points ago

To anyone swimming in the comments, I'll upvote this picture every time I see it. This one, and Dis shit don't stop. I think it might be a compulsion. So if you want free karma, you know what to do.

P.s. This one too. I can't help it.

[–]marsneedstowels 1 point2 points ago

Looks like all our non-basic lands are mountains now.

[–]arche22 1 point2 points ago

That's no moon...

[–]dezratt 2 points3 points ago

tour guide And if you look just out of frame to your right, you will see a lovely riot taking place.

[–]geoponos 2 points3 points ago

You can actually see acropolis from the place that the riots happened, but this is because acropolis means ακρόπολις = άκρο + πόλις, that translates to the top of the city. So you can see it from any place at Athens. That's the point that they build it there.

[–]SoSp 0 points1 point ago

and lets not forget the building rule (that was followed at least up until a few years ago as I am aware) that no building in the centre of Athens will be tall enough to obstruct the view of the Acropolis.

And it's a fact that with clear weather you can actually see the Acropolis from districts further in the city such as Kypseli etc...

[–]geoponos 0 points1 point ago

You can see it even with bad weather, from places even further. There is a very tall hill at the center of Athens. It's impossible not to see it from an open space. In addition to this, the biggest advantage and beauty of Athens (and Greece) is the clear sky and how blue it is! :)

[–]Bunyardz -1 points0 points ago

Is the moon really that big there

[–]MinkOWar 9 points10 points ago

No, the lens is just magnifying it more, and the parthenon is far away.

Here: I just did this little demo to explain, pretty simple to try at home too

[–]CarnCarby 2 points3 points ago

That was a great demonstration and explanation! Thanks so much for taking the time to make that, I really learned something today.

[–]Shirai-chan 1 point2 points ago

Thanks for the real life example!

[–]TheStick 0 points1 point ago

TIL! How nice of you to take the time to set this up.

[–]benisanerd 0 points1 point ago

no

[–]alexmadison1 2 points3 points ago

so sad that greece has essentially killed their tourism business...

[–]greek_geek 5 points6 points ago

I have no idea why you're being downvoted, since what you say is true. To be fair, though, it's a bit more complex: markets => corrupt government => tourism funds cut, strikes/privatization in the transportation sector => higher prices, lower service quality. Coming soon to a country near you.

[–]SoSp 0 points1 point ago

upvotes for the man above me! He speaks the truth!

[–]schoolisdeath 0 points1 point ago

what about all the majestic scaffolding? Seriously though, when I was there it was mostly scaffolding plus some rock underneath.

[–]randorolian 0 points1 point ago

I was there in 2006 and the scaffolding wasn't as bad, but still pretty noticeable. Shame. It was still incredible though.

[–]deepsouth420 0 points1 point ago

Moon don't give a fuck about silly humans

[–]Kyleeee 0 points1 point ago

So that really obvious crane is ruining the picture for me. :(

[–]HardCorey23 0 points1 point ago

Wait. This isn't about league of legends?

[–]GolfTee 0 points1 point ago

NOM NOM NOM

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point ago

Beautiful.

[–]jocarbart 0 points1 point ago

I have never seen the moon as big. It almost looks unreal. How the hell?

[–]amannm 0 points1 point ago

this picture makes me want to sacrifice

[–]CRAKCHEAD 0 points1 point ago

I was outside taking pictures about two or three weeks ago and the moon was just floating in the sky, above the horizon, in this serendipitous manner. If you've ever taken pictures then you'll know what I'm talking about. It was like a big rock of crack.

[–]JBWill 0 points1 point ago

From the thumbnail, I totally thought it was a picture of that scene in A New Hope where Luke is standing outside on the farm looking at the sunset.

[–]Mycakedayis1111 0 points1 point ago

The red moon rises, blood has been spilled this night.

[–]trevdak2 0 points1 point ago

I have a picture almsot exactly the same as that taken from my hotel on monastiraki.

[–]uhrovaltter 0 points1 point ago

That crane on the horizon kills the serenity.

[–]RhymeAndReason 0 points1 point ago

That is almost too much Pagan for one picture.

[–]frameforger 0 points1 point ago

I feel like the moon is a bit big..is that normal?

[–]MinkOWar 1 point2 points ago

Telephoto lens, and large distance from the parthenon. Perspective and Scale

[–]diesector 0 points1 point ago

Gives me ancient shivers ...

[–]Baulan 0 points1 point ago

That crane in the background really ruins the picture for me..

[–]muayguy 0 points1 point ago

Am I the only one who thought of these guys?

[–]jacobsaarela 0 points1 point ago

Awesome picture!

[–]IHAVE0FRIENDS 0 points1 point ago

Can someone please explain to me how in some pictures, the moon seems so much bigger than it actually is.

Thanks

[–]MinkOWar 1 point2 points ago

To be honest, it's been explained in the comments numerous times last night, hours before your post :)

Here's the demo I did to help explain the effect Perspective and Scale

[–]MeNicolesta 0 points1 point ago

i was just there in january...i see they arnt done with the construction...

[–]hanahou 0 points1 point ago

Such a cool shot. What a great eye.

[–]littlebrittle77 0 points1 point ago

Zeus smiles down upon his people.

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point ago

Fun Fact: The are no straight line in Parthenon's construction. Not even the columns are straight. Matter of fact, if they were to be extended to infinity, their meeting point would be in the Moon's orbit. So, in simpler words if they were to be extended to infinity, they would meet at the moon.

WHERE IS YOUR ATHENA NOW?

[–]Coolfuckingname 0 points1 point ago

If it looks this good now, after thousands of years,

Just imagine what it looked like when new...

I saw it in person this year. Astounding.

[–]spektralfabrik 0 points1 point ago

Thanks for clearing that up! :)

Aaahh, Germany can be so beautiful from time to time.

[–]1n2n3n4JAZZHANDS 0 points1 point ago

That is what I came here to say, getting downvotes though... guess people don't have a good sense of humor, or they don't read the news.

[–]Ryanair 0 points1 point ago

I'm German myself and this was the first witty answer that came to my mind. Reading the news is not the same category as a joke though. Because: Greece will never be a part from Germany and Germany is not buying Greece, it is investing in it.

It is sad that some jokes have to be explained in this length.

[–]SoSp 0 points1 point ago

It is the kind of "investing" that most people really don't care for and who can blame them? ;)

I still laughed at the joke though :D

[–]mellophone11 0 points1 point ago

Read that as Paarthunax first...

[–]matzero 0 points1 point ago

Any photographers out there that can confirm that this is not photoshoped? I was under the impression that you could not get a proportional pic of the moon in actual size.

[–]MinkOWar 6 points7 points ago

Here: I just did this exact same thing about ten minutes ago with a twoonie and a roll of tape.

Just think of it this way: The apparent size of the moon is not going to change no matter where you stand on the earth, but the apparent size of the parthenon, which is thousands of times closer, and smaller, changes greatly as you get further away. Just use a longer lens that makes the moon look that big, and find a spot far enough away that the parthenon looks that small.

[–]Negative_Space 0 points1 point ago

if you use a telephoto lens from a distance the gap between objects gets shorted in your depth of field, so this was shot from quite a ways away there was an article written on this photo and how the effect was achieved

ZEUS IS REAL!

[–]dfitt 0 points1 point ago

The thumbnail made it look like Tatooine.

[–]QuitReadingMyName 0 points1 point ago

Huh, I always thought it was the "Panthenon" without the R instead of the N. That's weird, I'm going to have to study ancient history some more and at least do a quick review.

TIL something new.

[–]Dude_from_Europe 0 points1 point ago

I'd buy it.

[–]fidigw 1 point2 points ago

cant - germany already has dibs

[–]cherif84 0 points1 point ago

If you have a large zoom lens you can achieve this effect quite simply when the moon is on the horizon.

[–]vatosplace -1 points0 points ago

The moon was there first.
