According to this very interesting talk relating to open source culture, the reason designers do that is because there is no copyright for clothing designs, but there is trademark. By implementing a trademark into the design, they can 'protect' their designs.

It has its origins in greek, specifically Aristotle's Metaphysics. Meta (μετά) in greek was a prefix meaning "after" and the physics (φυσικά) referred generally to the natural sciences. Scholars looking back on Aristotle's work labeled his chunk of writings after his lectures on nature as "τὰ μετὰ τὰ φυσικά," or "after the natural sciences." More pedantically, the writings weren't necessarily in a chunk, but that was how a first century Alexandrian scholar put them.

So that's the origin of our "Metaphysics" or "Metaphysical," but how did "meta" take on such a life of its own? If you're even passingly familiar with philosophy, you'll remember that Metaphysics deals with things like existence, causation, and God- however I won't say much more than that as there are people on here far more qualified. Some have always taken "μετὰ τὰ φυσικά" to have been intended to mean "That which is beyond the physical." Using this interpretation, meta got slapped on, largely by latin speakers, as a prefix indicating self-referentiality.

Meta was now in use, but largely restricted to scientific circles and used more rigidly. According to Wikipedia it didn't enter the vernacular as its own word until Douglas Hofstader's book Gödel, Escher, Bach. You can appreciate its utility as a word, especially among populations similar to Reddit, and it has since taken on its own personality.

Consider walking down the street on your way to class. As you turn the corner, you find your dismay that the entire sidewalk is blocked by a line of slow-walking, Ugg-wearing Coasties. No problem, right? You learned back in high school that the easiest way to resolve this situation is to get as close as you can, walk behind them at an exaggeratedly slow pace so people know how much they are inconveniencing you, and then pass. Perhaps you throw in a distasteful look to make sure they realize the superiority of your walking style. It all should go according to plan. But it doesn't.

Walking behind that row of black spandex- that at this point you have mentally felt up maybe five or six times- you come to the point where you remember the abnormal winter tans being. But they are not there. It turns out that they are in fact moving, albeit very slowly. Looking up to find their present position, the sun gets in your eyes. It hurts. Maybe those sunglasses aren't so stupid. Once again, however, when you get to where they were, they have moved! Perhaps one more try. You are close enough now that you can smell the Starbucks permanently woven into that terrible accent. But you just. Don't. Catch. Up. Every time you get to where they were, they have moved. This is your limbo; here you shall stay. I bet you didn't imagine so much Gucci in hell. You were a fool not to.

    this might be b.s. - in fact it probably is, but it is an amusing thought nonetheless.

    One of my more fashion forward friends told me, after I had commented on this very same thing, that the joke runs quite deep in that his operations are split up into different entities (creative, design, marketing, production, etc...) all named some fashion of "marc jacobs"so that this tag would actually mean something like this shirt was physically produced by branch "Marc Jacobs" and designed by branch "Jacobs" to be distributed by branch "marc by marc jacobs" who collaborated with the marketing branch "marc jacobs for marc by marc jacobs" or something to that effect.

            I want to make a note for the many people who claim that designers put their names on things out of narcissism. While the narcissistic designer archetype is by no means unfounded (ahem Karl), the main reason designers do this is to sell expensive, branded items to plebs who are attempting to flash their money while at the same time getting free (or rather paid-for) advertisement.
