To be fair, it didn't "just explode", it was hit by a damn semi going at full speed in opposite directions. That's a pretty good reason for it to suddenly be rendered into component bits. Also, did we just watch somebody die?

Seeing this almost brings tears to my eyes. I remember when my mother, brother, and I moved from Ohio to Nebraska in the winter of 93. We had to drive through a terrible blizzard while driving on I-80, and when we were just outside of Chicago there was a horrible accident involving a semi truck and a Thunderbird. As we were passing by we could see that only the front half of the vehicle was still "intact". The back half (behind the doors) was completely gone, and piled up nearby. There was blood inside, and I knew that whoever was in there didn't survive (the front seats were gone). It made my mother cry uncontrollably. As I was only 11, I didn't realize the implications for the most part. Now, death makes me very sad.

That destruction is intended. All those parts being broken and deformed are dissipating the kinetic energy that was stored in the vehicle. Crumple zones, etc. I'm guessing it didn't save that driver though.

7500(18) = 135,000kg*m/s!!!!

Impulse. Let's say the truck was in contact with the car for .3 sec. Let's say the truck slowed down 5m/s

F(.3)= (7500)(18)

F = 450,000N = 101,000lb of force.

This is an approximation. Not including crumple zones. Poor guy. At least he died on impact...

This is why your brakes are the enemy in slippery conditions. You can clearly see them losing control as soon as the brake lights kick in and if you look ahead you see they had to stop because the people ahead had to slow down.

Following too close killed this person.

You need to keep plenty of distance and allow others to keep plenty of distance. You won't save much time rushing anyways and arriving dead is in poor taste.

Modern vehicles are designed to d integrate like that. All the tear away and crumple points help reduce the impact before its reaches the passengers. However, no amount of design will save you from a head with a semi

Initial Loss of control : Going to fast on icy roads?

On the freeway I drive at or slightly above the posted speed limit. During rain, I drive about 15 mph slower than the limit and stay in the right lane.

Btw, driving 15mph slower for a 60mile length results in an increased travel time of 18minutes, or, 33% longer travel time.

In California at least, you have a 10.7 times increased chance of dying if you are speeding.
