From the movie World's Greatest Dad:

It's not the worst thing in the world to be alone. The worst thing is to be surrounded by people who make you feel alone.

[–]Selfish_Redditor 2 points3 points ago

came here to post that. Love that movie

[–]DidntClickGuy 1 point2 points ago

It's good, but probably the most depressing "comedy" I've ever seen in my life.

STOP MAKING ME SAD

upvotes for you sir

[–]rAxxt 2 points3 points ago

It's not truuuue. Cheer up. Really the only thing you will have to do alone is die.

[–]Ozera 2 points3 points ago

In return, you must also know that our Universe is expanding at a rate where it will not slow down. Our planet will be separated from all others. Our galaxy will be separated from all others. We will be alone. Will die alone. We will die in ice.

[–]farTooMuchHair 7 points8 points ago

Unless I'm mistaken, won't our expanding sun give us a nice, warm hug before that happens?

[–]Ozera 1 point2 points ago

O yes that is true. Forgot about that fate. However, the dying in ice fate is ever-present and that means the universe will eventually be void of life.

[–]rAxxt 0 points1 point ago

But the prophesies do speak of one. A man, a savior, born of the stars...

[–]hartlocker 0 points1 point ago

Actually, the universe expanding unlike the explosions we are accustomed to, so we aren't getting farther away from things. The universe expands and distributes matter as it continues the big bang.

[–]Ozera 2 points3 points ago

What? The area between every object is getting larger and so everything is expanding. We are not moving, rather the space between us and the next object is getting larger/wider. We can see we are getting farther away from other galaxies by observing galaxy redshifts.

The episode is My Screw Up if you need to google further.

[–]greenbee202 4 points5 points ago

rambling man.... felt alone many times.... for many months at a time..... recently moved to the beach hoping the ocean life would toss some cheer into my life..... again, reddit you hit the nail on the head... :( bahh at least i have a dog....

[–]kakarothasgoneinsane 2 points3 points ago

It's such a vicious cycle. If you are alone, you don't want to be around people who make you feel more alone. The people you want to be with? Gone in some way. People you could meet? They will either leave you or you will feel more lonely by knowing them.

But I do feel that when we are talking about people who make you feel alone, we are talking about the narcissistic 'friends' or co-workers that we acquire. With their clever combination of not caring about you, caring about themselves and not acknowledging either. It's not easy to get away from them because 1. There are a lot of them and 2. meeting people who actually give a shit are hard to unearth.

Sometimes I take comfort knowing that I am the only one in my head and no-one can get in but me.

Going through this everyday. Always had problems with depression, but suffered 3 TBIs at work over the course of 5 months really turned it into overdrive.

At least it's 2012.

[–]Ben_G_man 0 points1 point ago

Yeah, it sucks to be alone. But why aren't you doing anything about it?

I'm genuinely curious why you are having a hard time meeting people.

My 7th grade teacher used to tell students she thought were clueless, "alone in a crowded room." It was funny.

[–]dorkimoe 0 points1 point ago

Was one of my favorite quotes from the show

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point ago

Makes me think of this song. A little cheesy, but still good: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SIj4d5evZT0

[–]azarhac 0 points1 point ago

True, except I have never felt that way, and being alone is incredibly great 1/3 of the time honestly... But yeah gotta have some buddies for sure.

"There's a difference between being alone and being lonely" - Billy Connolly

[–]punkdigerati 0 points1 point ago

Pretty sure he made a movie about that...

[–]Wolfosaurus 0 points1 point ago

I can't remember not being alone. There is no one with me, I am, my 'self', is separate from everyone.

[–]Wanderlustful 0 points1 point ago

It's weird to me that the most accurate portrayals of depression come from comedic sources. This is an excellent example, as well as the "More Crap" episode of South Park (first link), and the best depiction I have ever seen from a webcomic (link two)

Sorry about the formatting my phone isn't cooperating.

What's with all the Scrubs love lately?

[–]LazyCollegeMusician 0 points1 point ago

But I can't do this all on my own...

[–]graffiti81 0 points1 point ago

I just finished Nine Ball by Jeffy Allen (of RSD pick-up artistry fame) and this line stood out to me:

I always said that eventually, everybody leaves and ultimately, we are alone. In reality, nobody ever leaves. Nobody is alone, precisely because everybody is. We are together in our aloneness. My fear of abandonment came from knowing that I wasn't self-sufficient. I was terrified of being alone with myself, because I didn't like the person who I had become.

That said, I'd rather be alone and lonely than like him.

[–]markISsolid 0 points1 point ago

Congratulations, Sir. You have successfully made me depressed on a Friday...

[–]TheShadowViking 0 points1 point ago

This song instantly started playing in my head.
