I would say that the reaction you see here is not due to her not giving a fuck. Far from it. This is very often how people react when they narrowly escape death before they even have time to react. I would almost guarantee that soon after this she is unable to walk from shock. I have seen footage of a multi-multi tonne chain holding a barge in place snapping and come hurtling towards a guy who narrowly avoids it. He walks around like he couldn't care less for a little while, then passes out from shock.

Edit: Here is the video. You don't see him completely pass out in it, but I know he does, I was shown this at a training seminar for a company I used to work for.

Also, I've heard that, if an ambulance hits you, you'll have to wait for a different ambulance to come pick you up. Apparently this is because the drivers of the first ambulance are obligated to take care of their current call first.

As a paramedic, you are to stop and assist at the emergency you created (if you can). Dispatch will send out two ambulances and FD one for you and one for the call you where on. (In san diego you are not to move the ambulance or car until PD comes on location). There are a lot more rules that need to be followed as well, but I am not going to get into them here.

It depends on the country and state, We waited 7 hours for an ambulance once because the first 4 ambulances stopped to assist with other emergencies (2 of which were punk kids throwing shit on the highway, causing injury) and we got pushed further down the list. When the last ambulance arrived it was a regular one, when we had called for a Cardio, they apologized and explained that they were told they would be picking up a body, not realizing my 97 year old grandpa survived the 3 hearts attacks he had over the 7 hours we waited.

I think what has happened here is she has assumed that the slowly moving van that she first steps in front of is in fact the near traffic lane itself. You can see her intently watching the far traffic lane, probably assuming she is safe from the near.

Wasn't very clever, don't get me wrong. But honestly, it's the sort of thing almost anyone could do on an absent minded day.

This isn't entirely true; most cities have guidelines that describe when it is legal to J-walk. Usually its only illegal if you do it near an intersection with traffic lights.

If you look again that's actually an ambulance. Would there be a difference for the driver? I don't know. It's hard to say when that truck is on the side making a right hand turn pretty much blocking visibility for the ambulance driver to see a pedestrian coming out.

A pedestrian crossing sign is visible on the left, and since the datestamp shows it's spring, the painted zebra stripes were most likely washed away by salt and other anti-snow/ice chemicals used during winter - seen it myself everywhere.

This is how many many people die in Russia. And this is why any driver watches for cars slowing or stopping in the rightmost lane.

I was driving my truck in seattle, down a street, at about 11 pm, in the rain.

This lady wearing a black dress walks out into a crosswalk from behind a car RIGHT in front of me. It takes a second for me to see her and I slam on my breaks. I slid to a stop with probably 10 feet to spare.

She started yelling at me and pointing at the crosswalk. All I can think is that it doesn't matter if she had the right of away if she was dead. You can be right, and you can be dead right.

Just because there's a crosswalk there doesn't mean you should walk out from behind cars, in poor conditions, in front of a car without looking. You have a responsibility for your own safety.

Had a similar thing happen to me. A guy on a bike went between two parked vans and turned left into my lane (oncoming traffic for him) without looking. I had no time to react. Luckily I was only going about 5-10 mph but I still tapped him. No one was hurt and our respective vehicles were fine but I definitely had a mini heart attack. The kicker was that he looked at me like I was the asshole as he rode off.

As an every-single-day cyclist, I have to apologize profusely for this fuck-tard-ward-asshole's actions. On the rare occasion that I perform an outright illegal and or unsafe action on the road, I am quick to apologize to any drivers I may have inconvenienced.

A couple weeks ago I was about to cross a busy street. I had the crosswalk signal (i.e., crossing traffic had a red light) but still checked oncoming traffic both directions.

It was a good thing too because a metro bus had no fucks to give for that red light. He slammed on his breaks at the last second and the bus came to a stop 5 feet over the crosswalk. If I had taken even a couple more steps it would've a bad day.

I stared down the bus driver looking for a "sorry" or some recognition that he almost killed me but, again, no fucks were given that day.

In some countries (dunno if it's the same in the US) the person crossing has right of way and can theoretically just step out because a driver should be expecting this and slow if they see a person approaching one, even if they don't actually cross. Of course there's limits to that.

Still makes sense to look, at any crossing. I learned my lesson when some kid crossed at the crossing right near school when I was... 6 maybe... got hit by a car, didin't die or anything but we had ahour long assembly on why you should always look. Now it's just habbit. My life isn't worth not doing it.

It's not always clear-cut. Cars are often allowed to turn right in intersections while pedestrians get a walk light. It's up to them to sort out the details. It shouldn't be ok to kill people with a walk light in a crosswalk who aren't paying attention.

I was nearly hit by some rednecks driving in town who took a right turn through the crosswalk at about 25 mph. Then they had the audacity to tell me off and flick me off for being in their way.

The comment linked could be construed two ways. One being that there should be a corporal punishment for jay walkers, which we will both concede is needlessly excessive for such a normally mild inconvenience. The other interpretation is the one that I initially came up with, and the one that you are thinking of: the act of running over a jay walker should be a prosecutable crime.

To address the former, I have a few qualms with purposefully killing people who mildly inconvenience me. To address the latter, I agree. I don't think there should be legal ramifications to the driver if the person did something clearly reckless, and the driver had done everything a reasonable driver should have (e.g. had that truck hit and killed the woman despite stopping, it should not be held responsible as it looked like it was going with the flow of traffic and braked HARD when it saw that it could potentially kill the person).

My aunt hit a homeless person dressed in all dark colors at night in a section of the road that was poorly lit. She hasn't heard a call or peep back from the cops since it happened 3 years ago. That leads me to believe it IS in fact, "legal," to hit a driver. Of course that comes with the implication that you tried your best to not hit the driver. If you tried to kill the jaywalker, it's just murder. I think we can all agree that murder is bad.

It typically is legal to kill / run down j walkers. Though you do need to show some effort of breaking to get away with it.

I know several people who have hit drunk people. Its a problem with the bar when the spill out into the street in my home town. The drunks get done normally on a number of offences including j walking.

This happened to me not too long ago - that is, almost killed a jay walker.

I was on a main street in a downtown area. I was coming up on an intersection about 50 feet ahead, and my lane split into two lanes - one for those turning right, and one for those continuing straight ahead. I moved into the right-turning lane, while everyone else stayed straight. Since the right-turn lane had a green light and the straight one had a red light, I was driving along a narrow corridor of stopped vehicles - parked cars on my right, and cars stopped at the red light on my left.

So I'm zipping down this hallway of cars at about 30 mph, when suddenly this lady steps out about 10-15 feet in front of me on the left side.

She had walked across a lane of oncoming traffic, squeezed between a lane of cars idling at a red light, and stepped out blindly into another lane of oncoming traffic. I slammed on the brakes, stopped about 6 inches away from her, and managed to not swerve into any of the surrounding cars. She gave me a look somewhere between the lady from the OP and "I just peed myself". There was a cop behind me, so I can only hope that he stopped to write her a ticket. I didn't wait around to see.

The thing is, she walked into traffic about 15 feet away from a crosswalk with a "push to activate" signal. What a dumbass.

Yeah, my town issues tickets for people that don't cross at the marked location. It hasn't been a big deal in the past, law enforcement didn't really care because people were generally smart about jay walking (look both ways, wait until no traffic, etc). But recently there has been a rash of people getting hit by stepping into traffic, and the cops have started cracking down on jay walkers.

This is one of the problems in Russia. Instead of having traffic lights, they just put up signs where pedestrians can cross. However, many times when the car in the right lane stops to let the people cross the road, the cars in the left lane keep going. Because the car stops in the right lane, the pedestrians can't see the cars in the left lane, and the cars in the left lane can't see the pedestrians because the other car blocks the view. This leads to a crap-ton of accidents and it happens all the time.

Old highschool friend of mine broke both of someone's legs in a situation just like this. Car in the right lane had stopped for the crossing pedestrian, but she couldn't see him and didn't really think hard about why the other car had stopped so she just kept on in the left lane. Pedestrian didn't check for oncoming cars and she plowed him.
