I made one few years ago when this instruction was posted on Reddit.

Performance was outstanding - arrow flight distance was about 10~15m and it was able to penetrate light kevlar when there was a needle as the arrow head.

For the record: This is not a crossbow.

Crossbows (by definition) rely on the reflexive properties of the arms to provide a launching force and have a taught string. If it relies on an elastic restoring force either in the bowstring or in bundles attached to stiff arms, it's technically a form of Ballista.

Down voted simply due to the fact you didn't show all the materials needed for the build. Wtf is that brown piece? Is that tape? Where do you get a curved pull back? Be more thorough; what you show is how to build the frame (without tape) but not the firing mechanism.

I managed to make one entirely out of pens. If you take apart a pen you get a holster similar to the white piece, and you can use the "arrow" shaped thing that holds the ink as the brown piece.

Here is my first take on it.

This was my final product.

I had to improvise on the pencils, but I had a thin wooden dowel that I cut up. Used electrical tape too. The projectile is a coffee stir.

You can make a MUCH deadlier one with just a pen, elastic band, and some tape. Just remove the ends of the pen so you have a hollow tube(for the barrel). Cut the elastic band in halfand tape it securely so that it forms a small loop over one of the ends of the pen. sorta like this: c=== where the 'c' is the elastic band and the '=' is the pen tube. next find a suitable arrow, you can use the actual inside of the pen once you remove the part that attaches to the pen becuase it slips inside. I used to get in loads of trouble for these becuase they are actually (depending on the elastic band) powerful enough to embed in wood and pierce skin. pro tip: if you use those giant toothpicks that you use in cooking you can do som serious damage.

With the pen closed, like in the picture I posted, remove the cone shaped end. Now take the spring and stretch it until it's 2 or 3 times as long as it originally was. Replace the spring on the ink part of the pen, and then replace the cone shape part, but don't put it on all the way. It'll be more difficult since the spring is larger. Just find the sweet spot where cone shape is about to pop off the pen, but has enough friction to stay on. The pen is now loaded. Just aim at whatever you want to hit and click the top. The cone end will fly off at around mach 6. Makes classes immensely less boring.
