Good thing this can't happen in humans right?..... Right?!...

[–]alextonne 126 points127 points ago

Google search Loa Loa. It's a parasite that occasionally migrates across the conjuctiva of the eye (it's not painful at all when this happens). To get the parasite out, one must take it out as it comes across the eye (not for the faint of heart!)

[–]Margra 182 points183 points ago

The worst part about that image is how long it took to load. I knew what was coming, and the anticipation made it worse

[–]Bonesaw39 171 points172 points ago

"And then god created animals for humans, including a parasitic eye worm, because fuck you" -The Bible

[–]DownpoursForAll 20 points21 points ago*

Creatures like this, Japanese giant wasps, and the entire zoological population of Australia are proof that if there is a God, he/it is most certainly not benevolent.

[–]no_username_needed 40 points41 points ago

Google search Loa Loa

Why would you do this to me? You know I have a compulsion to google anything I don't know about, and yet you give me this? Go to hell.

[–]Bernie_Roscoe 14 points15 points ago*

You should definitely google image search Fetiform Teratoma Anencephaly (Homunculus). It's not disturbing at all.

Not at all.

Promise.

Warning: NSFL... maybe

[–]no_username_needed 26 points27 points ago

I'm cool with deformed and maimed people, been on the internet far too long for that to bother me. I just hate reading about yet another thing that could possibly be feeding off of me right now.

[–]Bernie_Roscoe 8 points9 points ago*

Stay away from Africa and you'll be fine.

Anyway, the parasite is very easily treatable and very rare.

Unlike enterobius.

fun fact: over 10% of all Americans have thousands of this fella living inside of them.

[–]Scruge 27 points28 points ago

great, that just sent me on a wiki search that concluded with me seeing the picture of a mans hairy rectum covered in pinworms.

[–]MeatCarpet 7 points8 points ago

Link?

[–]no_username_needed 6 points7 points ago*

Fuck you.

EDIT: Welp, fuck me. Have had outside pets since I was a little kid, have always chewed my nails, and have generally been an outside kid. I likely have a parasite now.

[–]erktheviking 2 points3 points ago

way to send a volt of horror through my body

[–]Forever_Awkward 595 points596 points ago

It most certainly can, and does.

[–]The7xa 879 points880 points ago

Time to never go outside again.

[–][deleted] 731 points732 points ago

Like you've been outside before.

[–]frickindeal 855 points856 points ago

I tried it once, and was nearly blinded by the Day Star.

It's surprisingly bright.

[–]hillbillypaladin 297 points298 points ago

[–]JawlessRocket 7 points8 points ago

And if you like this, you'll like /r/IASIP

[–]petemck 14 points15 points ago

wait.. champion of himself?

[–]cyberstormfox 1 point2 points ago

I don't like the outside; 3D gives me a headache.

[–]Vespasianus 66 points67 points ago

You don't have to go outside to catch internal parasites. Some travel in mosquitoes, for example.

[–]alaphic 117 points118 points ago

Fuck you.

[–]veRdiKt 20 points21 points ago

You Fuck

[–]alaphic 20 points21 points ago

Very well, thanks for asking.

[–]atomicbison 7 points8 points ago

Don't worry, if you live outside the tropics/equatorial zones you have like no chance of catching any parasitic anything from mosquitoes.

Now, encephalitic viruses on the other hand? Hah, have fun.

[–]Brisco_County_III 4 points5 points ago

Oh yeah, sometimes the story even gets better. The human botfly? Adult flies catch mosquitoes, glue eggs to them, then release them back into the wild, and when they get near a human the larvae hatch, drop off, and burrow into the hole the mosquito made in the skin.

[–]Kotton 50 points51 points ago

Time to buy a bubble.

[–]KevyB 18 points19 points ago

Stay away from sandboxes especially.

[–]BenjaminSkanklin 44 points45 points ago

Also: avoid smearing cat feces in your eyes.

[–]Jebjab 17 points18 points ago

There goes Thursday...

[–]Chase_Meister 26 points27 points ago

I wish you told me that sooner...

[–]BN_Guffa 72 points73 points ago

So that's what the squiggly thing in my peripheral vision is!

[–]General_Hide 90 points91 points ago

haha those are Floaters, in case you were genuinely interested.

[–]Uberninjaa 32 points33 points ago

Thank you. I can vaguely recall when I was 3 and I saw these things in my vision while staring at the sky. I was convinced it was the air molecules bouncing off my eyeballs.

I've gotten more intelligent since then...

[–]cappucinomakesmepoop 13 points14 points ago

if you knew about/could say molecules at age 3, i'd say you were off to a pretty good start.

[–]redmonster2 32 points33 points ago

No way that's a floater. That is the NOPEst parasite worm thing I've ever seen.

[–]General_Hide 37 points38 points ago

I meant the squiggly things you see in your eye. I agree the post is defiantly a crazy ass parasite.

[–]Forever_Awkward 30 points31 points ago

Yeah, that worm don't take orders from no one!!

[–]GoodWithoutAGod 2 points3 points ago

[–]Sweetrolls 33 points34 points ago

can someone please explain, what exacty is this?

[–]fresh_herbal_extract 46 points47 points ago

[–]emtilt 8 points9 points ago*

Doesn't seem likely. Loa loa inhabit the subcutaneous tissue. If this is real and not 'shopped, it's in the vitreous humour.

EDIT: Citation that it could indeed possibly be loa loa posted below. I remain skeptical because a cursory google search and wikipedia seem to suggest that humans are the only known natural resevoir of this species.

[–]fresh_herbal_extract 10 points11 points ago

Humour* (pdf warning) and yes, it's definitely loa loa.

[–]fuzaco 48 points49 points ago

It's a worm that lives in the eye.

[–]Giggity0 32 points33 points ago

Everything checks out now.

[–]cb43569 6 points7 points ago

I was hoping someone could be more specific as to exact species and whether it's common for them to appear in, you know, eyeballs. Is this rare or do plenty of toads encounter these? I want answers from experts!

[–]AFRUITPIE 3 points4 points ago

How do they get that thing out of your eye?!

[–]Gesichtsgulasch 7 points8 points ago

I´m afraid to click that link.

[–]TheTragicReturn 4 points5 points ago

Nobody has reported back. I'm thinking there are no survivors. :(

[–]BrightLightBlinding 15 points16 points ago

Humans are the only known natural reservoir. It is estimated that 12-13 million humans are infected with the Loa loa larvae.

[–]Ectospheno 47 points48 points ago

The sentence right before that one on wikipedia is:

"Human loiasis geographical distribution is restricted to the rain forest and swamp forest areas of West Africa, being especially common in Cameroon and on the Ogooué River."

Which is a bit relevant.

[–]profcath 42 points43 points ago

[–]paulikeloa 2 points3 points ago

[–]The_Holy_Handgrenade 5 points6 points ago

This happened in Calicut, India.

[–]animalcule 3 points4 points ago

oh god oh god. oh god. i've seen some pretty horrific things on the internet but nothing has ever made me squirm so hard...i feel a little ill...

[–]UKMansonite 6 points7 points ago

FUCKING NOPE

[–]Engineer3227 5 points6 points ago

OMG OMG OMG!!! I would demand to either be put to sleep or heavily sedated to the point where I no longer remembered my name for an operation like that!

I hate going to the eye doctor for just a basic exam! Last time I went they did a more sophisticated test for eye pressure than the one where it just blows a puff of air onto your eye. The more sophisticated one is that they have this tool which has to press up against your eye to gauge pressure. They had to hold my eye open because the urge to blink was so powerful.

[–]xpurplexamyx 5 points6 points ago

The problem with all eye operations, is that you cannot be unconscious or asleep due to your eyes rotating into a position of inaccessibility. Perhaps for a worm extraction it would be okay, but for anything more invasive, you need to be conscious. :(

[–]julia-sets 18 points19 points ago

Don't ever Google "loa loa".

[–]Punchabearinnamouf 8 points9 points ago

Oh god... I Googled "loa loa"...

[–]Mechanical_Monk 14 points15 points ago

Don't ever give me twenty dollars...

[–]Punchabearinnamouf 2 points3 points ago

Ten dollars? What do you need five dollars for?

[–]SamV 4 points5 points ago

It happened to me actually. That's why I can only see in one eye (I have a glass eye)

Most painful thing I've ever been through in my entire life. I still have some PTSDish about it and nightmares at least twice a week.

[–][deleted] 137 points138 points ago

So, does anyone know what this actually is? I'm intrigued.

[–]chem_monkey 578 points579 points ago

That's a tadpole when he was just a glimmer in his father's eye

[–]Deadsock 28 points29 points ago

The fact of how creepy the reality is overrides the fact that this was actually pretty funny.

[–]frickindeal 154 points155 points ago

[–]iamnotparanoid 94 points95 points ago

It is a parasite that got into it's eye.

[–][deleted] 51 points52 points ago

Clearly, but does anyone know what type? I've been looking and I can't find anything about that specific type.

[–]jdk 21 points22 points ago

African eyeworm.

And it can happen to human beings.

[–]damontoo 16 points17 points ago

Loa loa microfilariae are transmitted to humans by the mango

God damn it. It had to be something delicious.

[–]Telionis 11 points12 points ago

Mango fly, not the mango fruit. :)

[–]ThemDangVidyaGames 7 points8 points ago

I don't see how that could make a difference to damontoo's post.

[–]Vespasianus 14 points15 points ago

Just glancing at it it looks like a roundworm (nematode). I couldn't begin to tell you exactly what kind.

[–]WhyAmINotStudying 33 points34 points ago

In this case, I believe it's a nematoad.

[–]LukaCola 13 points14 points ago

God dang nematoads...

[–]Kira_kappuke-ki 4 points5 points ago

Nematodes are people too.

[–]ignanima 3 points4 points ago

loa loa.

[–]Toodlez 6 points7 points ago

DAMN NATURE YOU SCARY

[–]tamrix 6 points7 points ago

Can we ban parasites in eyes globally? Can that be a thing?

[–]PowzA 5 points6 points ago

Yes, I remember learning about them in 10th grade Biology. I think it's some kind of flatworm Edit: It's a roundworm called the Loa Loa, they can move a few inches per hour.

[–]RedsforMeds 9 points10 points ago*

Loa loa is the fun human version. I would argue that this is in fact a species similar to Loa loa, but not Loa loa due to the location of the worm within the vitreous humor.

[–]harlyboy 317 points318 points ago*

Bio major here. This is a Loa Loa worm, also known as the eye worm. Common in Africa and India. They are often carried by blood sucking flies. Here's an interesting video Edit: Just to point out, Loa Loa does not cause elephantiasis, that's a completely separate parasite

[–]RedsforMeds 90 points91 points ago*

Doctor here, this is not Loa loa. Humans are the most common reservoirs for Loa loa, which like to inhabit subcutaneous tissue. The helminth in the gif is some sort of other species which inhabits the vitreous humor, which is deep to the subcutaneous tissue. editted for clarity

[–]SarahHeartzUnicorns 53 points54 points ago

Fuck that! I'd like to pretend that it's only a thing for toads. I'm all for that.

Knowledgeisabitchsometimes.

[–]joelfriesen 3 points4 points ago

Human here. That sounds awful.

[–]harlyboy 3 points4 points ago

What would be the general treatment?

[–]RedsforMeds 12 points13 points ago

Antihelminthic drugs kill the worm, and your body breaks it down and expels it. If it's in the eye you can get it removed by an opthalmologist. This is a relatively rare pathology and doesn't really occur in the western world.

[–]tsbatth 44 points45 points ago

THANK YOU. It used to be that this kind of comment was on top, now it's just filled with stupid hypnotoad, nope jokes etc... NOW I know the site has truly gone to shit.

[–]daielquon 13 points14 points ago

[–]conrak17 817 points818 points ago

All glory to the hypnotoad!

[–]cessna182er 22 points23 points ago

Did you paint this for this post or is this one of your stock images?

[–]Ugbrog 17 points18 points ago

It was just posted to the deviant art site, if that answers your question.

[–]pufan321 22 points23 points ago

Who honestly didn't think this would be the top comment?

[–]thats-a-repost 36 points37 points ago*

[–]NonPermissive 130 points131 points ago

Just as long as we don't start ending every sentence with that again.

[–]JamSardine 312 points313 points ago

Agreed, that would be utterlALL GLORY TO THE HYPNOTOAD.

[–]who_took_my_cookies 88 points89 points ago

Hallowed be the Ori...oh wait, dammit, I always fuck that up.

[–]alucard_3501 28 points29 points ago

HA! Ori reference was not expected! That was awesome.

[–]factoid_ 17 points18 points ago

Been watching that on Netflix. I wish they'd made another season or two of SG1. The Ori plot was great, and Ben Browder made the show really interesting.

Same with Stargate Atlantis. It deserved at least two more seasons.

I really hope we get a new Stargate series soon. I know i'm in the minority, but I even loved Universe. Although now that I've been watching the older series again I do understand why some people hated how different it was.

[–]who_took_my_cookies 6 points7 points ago

Agreed. It felt as though the Ori plot deserved more focus and development. I never did watch much of SG:A, though what I did see seemed promising.

The question is: What options are left to explore in the Stargate universe?

[–]Engineer3227 22 points23 points ago

So say we all!

[–]RZARECTOR 6 points7 points ago

ALL HAIL THE ORI!

[–]NonPermissive 171 points172 points ago

Well, I guess I walked right into that one.

[–]DieAnderTier 57 points58 points ago

Yes. You did.

[–]trolloc1 12 points13 points ago

[–]Phage0070 28 points29 points ago

Lets just pull this worm out, and... wow, we really should measure and inspect this! If only there was an appropriate surface... I know! Lets use the lens of this dude's eye!

[–]squintzz 8 points9 points ago

music really made it for me

[–]skyroket 14 points15 points ago

I don't know how else to describe the sound I was making... "hhhh hhhhhhhhh hhhhhhh hhh hhhhh"

[–]powerchicken 6 points7 points ago

How the fuck does it move around so freely? It's almost like there's just air behind the "lens" of the frog's eye.

[–][deleted] 24 points25 points ago

Reddit isnt doing its thing where theres a really informative comment for us that actually want to know whats happening instead of obvious hypno toad puns

[–]robodrew 18 points19 points ago

Between the cornea and pupil there really is just a fluid called Aqueous Humor. Worms could easily swim in that.

[–]freshout12 32 points33 points ago

That can't be healthy

[–]TheKhajiit 207 points208 points ago

i think you have a little nope in your eye

[–]toinfinitiandbeyond 19 points20 points ago

[–]oobey 6 points7 points ago

Yeah one of my favorite hobbies these days is griping about how submissions lately aren't very "WTF" but this... this...

Yeah. This is purestrain WTF.

[–][deleted] 7 points8 points ago

FYI: if that was upsetting, you might like to know humans can get those as well.

[–]Onemanorgy 14 points15 points ago

I'm just gonna head over there and die real quick.

[–]bobmore11 35 points36 points ago

DAM NATURE YOU SCARY

[–]smootie 3 points4 points ago

That must feel so weird.

[–]green_tea_girl 2 points3 points ago

I wonder if the people who eat them get those worms? O_O

[–]Dopplegangr1 2 points3 points ago

Is that actually in his eye? Looks more like it's stuck between his eye and his lid (that lid that they have for swimming under water that's transparent).

[–]soulbend 2 points3 points ago

That's what I was thinking, but look how it doesn't deform the surface. What makes it weird is how fast it's moving around. Maybe the frog is actually moving it's throat really slowly and the gif was sped up.

[–]NeoShader 2 points3 points ago

I had something like this happen to me. I was fishing and rubbed my eyes. I wear contacts, and I guess an amoebae got in my eye. It started hurting so bad I thought i had cut my eye. I went to the eye doctor and he was like, DUDE GO TO THE HOSPITAL NOW. So I went and found out I had "acanthamoeba keratitis". Basically A WORM IN MY EYE!

Animal planet.

The series about the Humane Society cops, don't remember which town.

They rescued a sickly mother dog and her puppies. The puppies all had to be put down. They had maggots for eyes. The membrane of the eye was still there, but it was a mass of wriggling maggots behind it.

[–]Jerraldough 1 point2 points ago

[–]Woobachuckie 1 point2 points ago

That's TWO posts that I've seen in r/wtf that contained a worm wriggling around in an eye today.

This is the straw the broke the camel's back. This is the post that made me unsubscribe to r/wtf.
