/r/gifs and /r/aww are not default subreddits. I'm subscribed to one and not the other (guess which one) so I wouldn't have seen this otherwise.

Edit: I looked it up on Wikipedia. It looks like /r/aww is one of the default subreddits. The default list shown on Wikipedia is as of October 2011, a month after I joined Reddit, so it was not one of my defaults when I first signed up. However, /r/gifs is not a default and it cannot be expected that everyone will see this just because it's been posted SOMEWHERE on Reddit.
