How I feel as a Southern Californian on Reddit (cdn.memegenerator.net)
submitted 9 months ago by iturner82
[–]kjmiller7 38 points39 points40 points 9 months ago
Washington State is pretty rock-solid, same with Oregon.
Basically, you're safe if you can see the Pacific.
[–]Alienx_318 18 points19 points20 points 9 months ago
Washington and Oregon are definitely better choices because..they aren't broke.
[–]Philile 12 points13 points14 points 9 months ago
They also didn't pass Prop 8.
[–]crazy_McLazy 1 point2 points3 points 9 months ago
but it was the invasion of money from Utah that caused prop 8 to be passed, many lies were broadcast.
[–]theguruofreason 3 points4 points5 points 9 months ago
I disagree (and this is where it gets interesting): there's a website on which you can look at voter breakdown by geography and specifically by congressional districts. If Orange County (so Cal, right?) hadn't voted (not switched its vote, hadn't voted), a few proposition races would have been very different. There are large parts of Southern California that are full of insulated, bigoted assholes (especially Kern County. Fuck those people).
[–]pacman42 1 point2 points3 points 9 months ago
Thats exactly why the other 49 states are also fucked up. Because of lies that are believed.
[–]JimmyJamesMac 0 points1 point2 points 9 months ago
Oregon passed Measure 5, which has impacted funding negatively, and shifted the burden away from large land owners and on to the rest of us.
[–]Goldylocks42 2 points3 points4 points 9 months ago
prop 8 or horrendous weather... west coast dilemmas.
[–]Mormontoatheist 1 point2 points3 points 9 months ago
Definitely love Washington, or a at least Western Washington, Eastern and Central are too hot for my tastes.
[–]Mastakator 3 points4 points5 points 9 months ago
Some parts of Oregon are pretty bad, but for the most part it's fine.
[–]Banaam 2 points3 points4 points 9 months ago
I live in eastern oregon, it isn't that bad here, christians, but no threats towards me due to my atheism, and I'm extremely open.
[–]persketti 0 points1 point2 points 9 months ago
I live in eastern Washington, spokane, and most people are conservative but they don't care if you're an atheist and mind their own business. Shit my best friend in high school was a Mormon and he didn't care that I was an atheist
[–]Banaam 0 points1 point2 points 9 months ago
Basically what life here is like.
[–]theelliottolson 2 points3 points4 points 9 months ago
Oregon is mostly good...except for Oregon City where those "faith healing" deaths occurred
[–]BigSwedenMan 1 point2 points3 points 9 months ago
Those are a minority of the population. Every town has it's cooks, Oregon Cities cooks just got more publicity because they got their kids killed. Suffice it to say, the rest of the region is strongly against them.
[–]theelliottolson 0 points1 point2 points 9 months ago
Very true, like you said, every town has its cooks
[–]iturner82[S] 2 points3 points4 points 9 months ago
That's what it seems to be like
[–]helpmesleep666 1 point2 points3 points 9 months ago
West Coast!
[–]Dean_K1 1 point2 points3 points 9 months ago
For those advocating for Oregon, did you know that gay marriage is constitutionally banned there?
[–]Zeppelin887 2 points3 points4 points 9 months ago
I clicked on the comment link to post that exact same thing. Of course it's most true west of the Cascades, over to the east is crazy
[–]thatguysammo 0 points1 point2 points 9 months ago
you've cracked it!!!... reason requires sea air!!!
[–]notcaffeinefree 0 points1 point2 points 9 months ago
I'm so glad my parents decided to live on the west coast and not the mid-west or east-coast.
[–][deleted] 12 points13 points14 points 9 months ago
South Orange County. Where I come from, we have PRO Prop 8 rallies.
[–]Unscientific 2 points3 points4 points 9 months ago
Yup. I grew up in South OC, and Christianity is pretty much ubiquitous. Many of the smartest people I know from that area are still religious today. At least most of them oppose Rick Warren and Saddleback Church.
[–]Dirtyd217 1 point2 points3 points 9 months ago
Oh god saddle back Church..... Would you like some coffee with your Jesus?
[–]Haereticus 2 points3 points4 points 9 months ago
You should go to The Rock, I think it's in Anaheim. It's a fun cultural experience ಠ_ಠ.
[–]TristanIsAwesome 2 points3 points4 points 9 months ago
Its in Point Loma.
[–][deleted] 1 point2 points3 points 9 months ago
Saddleback? That's just a bunch of wishy-washy, "feel good" Christians. My old high school is about half of a mile away from Saddleback Church, but I went to a way more fundamentalist/YEC/Calvinist church until I became an atheist.
[–]Unscientific 0 points1 point2 points 9 months ago
Haha, I know the area too well. I went to Mission Hills, where I once got in trouble for wearing a "Fuck Me" t-shirt to church... but didn't get kicked out. The way they saw it, that was all the more reason for me to be in church.
[–][deleted] 0 points1 point2 points 9 months ago
The Mission Hills in MV or RSM? The school or just the church? My aunt teaches at the one in RSM.
The one in MV, but I've been to the one in RSM several times. Didn't know there was a Mission Hills school.
It's been about a decade since I last went to either, but I remember both Mission Hills locations as being full of people who were very friendly until something crossed their beliefs.
I went to VBS there for a couple summers when I was in elementary school because my mom was lazy and I lived just down Alicia at the time. Having been to a lot of similar churches (like various Calvary Chapels), I definitely think that your general South OC evangelical is very nice, but bringing up things that upset their social or religious views elicits a very negative response.
[–]studmuffffffin 1 point2 points3 points 9 months ago
Northern Orange county, about 3 minutes from my house they had that anti muslim tea party thing. Luckily I wasn't home for that.
[–]Ghoster8 0 points1 point2 points 9 months ago
Yep I love OC
[–]linearcore 8 points9 points10 points 9 months ago
You've obviously never really traveled behind the Orange Curtain or hit San Diego during election season.
From Huntington on the Pacific to San Clemente (also) on the Pacific to Anaheim Hills in the East, an orange curtain has descended across the state. Behind this line lie all the forgotten orange groves and beaches of Beach Boys fame, fallen to an ever increasing measure of control by socially conservative Christianity.
[–]nermid 0 points1 point2 points 9 months ago
Everything in the US East of the Pacific Ocean is lost to Christianity.
Hawaii: the last bastion of atheism in the Free World.
[–]Aberu 7 points8 points9 points 9 months ago
Dude. Ours voted yes on Prop 8. Other states my ass, ours is still pretty high up on the religiosity scale, and has a pretty high combined catholic and mormon population.
[–]Quercus_lobata 12 points13 points14 points 9 months ago
As another Californian (southern through high school) I say that if you are asking such a question, you have not yet fully experienced the ignorance in your own state. The other states are just more concentrated.
[–]iturner82[S] -1 points0 points1 point 9 months ago
I've definitely experienced ignorance in my state, but I have never had teachers tell me that evolution is a myth and creationism is fact (like some other posters)
[–]Quercus_lobata 1 point2 points3 points 9 months ago
I'd like to think that that is simply because our science curriculum, and that any California science teacher had a proper science education at one of California's universities, though I do personally know a creationist math teacher in the San Diego area. So again, it may just be that the concentration of ignorance is lower in CA, and even lower within the profession of educators, since most of them are educated themselves.
[–]redbeardo 0 points1 point2 points 9 months ago
I had that happen in rural Indiana. I now live in Austin Tx, which is awesome. Just don't leave the city with evolution stickers on your car though.
[–]zombie_wrider 5 points6 points7 points 9 months ago
Does Northern California count as one of the other 49 states?
[–]PyroKittens 4 points5 points6 points 9 months ago
With the mega churches that socal has, I would say that socal qualifies as one of the other 49 states
[–]BenderIsntBonder 2 points3 points4 points 9 months ago
Yup, came here to say this is how the Bay Area feels about Southern California too!
No because you have Humboldt, so it balances it all out
[–]Blitztwist 4 points5 points6 points 9 months ago
Well thankfully unlike New York you guys in southern California allow gay marriage ..... ...... oh wait you don't ........ this is pretty awkward.
[–]glasgow015 3 points4 points5 points 9 months ago
Or better yet New England. Far and away the least religious part of the country. West coast really can't even hold a candle to it. Pretty wide spread access to gay marriage, limited death penalty all that enlightened jazz. But I'm sure your ill informed anecdotal memes and comments are just as valid. http://www.livescience.com/19314-religious-states-list.html
[–]King_of_Spades 2 points3 points4 points 9 months ago
Well, it comes to different kinds of ignorance. In the Bay Area, I love not being oppressed because of my religion (or lack thereof,) but it doesn't mean we're excluded from morons who think earthquakes actually move the Earth. sigh...
[–][deleted] 3 points4 points5 points 9 months ago
I'm an atheist from NOVA (northern virginia) my ex and his family were from Oceanside (CA)...One time we went on a run and I had an asthma attack...he told me he had asthma when he was little but his pastor healed him so I should look into that. He also told me to stop taking my anti-depressants and just go to church....All his friends back in California were the same way...I think the distinction is made in communities rather than states....eg my current boyfriend is from Tennessee (he's an atheist) and and has lots of atheist friends from there despite it being part of the bible belt.
[–][deleted] -1 points0 points1 point 9 months ago
Shortens name of state Puts full name right after it so you don't get confused
Good Guy Idiot?
many people outside of the DC area don't know that NOVA stands for Northern Virginia. VA is the correct shortened form of Virginia, but if I had just put northern Virginia, people from NOVA would have thought I was an idiot...It's pretty much standard here.
I don't think saying Northern Virginia would make you sound like an idiot.
[–]Groden 3 points4 points5 points 9 months ago
I'm from Massachusetts, we've had equal access to marriage since 2004. Things are pretty good here, always have been. I lived in Santa Cruz, CA for 6 years, and while the number fundie christians there was pretty low there were all kinda of new age believers. Remember there isn't just one flavor of crazy.
[–]Guy_Barker 4 points5 points6 points 9 months ago
Your meme is bad and you should feel bad.
[–]Barb0 2 points3 points4 points 9 months ago
Thank you for confirming that Californians are pretentious d-bags.
[–]clawDEEuss 2 points3 points4 points 9 months ago
Hey, remember when your state voted to ban same sex marriage? Hmm....
[–]sobermonkey 4 points5 points6 points 9 months ago
pff im in new england we're the least religious part of the nation
[–]Butt_Plug_Inspector 12 points13 points14 points 9 months ago
How I feel as a resident of one of the other 49: Are all Californians as obnoxious as this OP?
[–]Anticipator1234 3 points4 points5 points 9 months ago
I'm from L.A., so yes, fuck off. ;)
[–]Conquerer 2 points3 points4 points 9 months ago
Meh, I wouldn't say ALL of them. Just stay away from the bible belt. Seriously, any atheist who goes through there will have their face permanently attached to their palm.
[–]controlmath 2 points3 points4 points 9 months ago
The midwest is a mixed bag to be honest. I live in Michigan and I feel it's like you take the East Coast and mix it with the South and made it more German/Dutch and you have us.
[–]scrambles57 2 points3 points4 points 9 months ago
I'm glad to say that here in Ventura County, I don't see too many fundies.
[–]mudwork 0 points1 point2 points 9 months ago
AND you've got Corrale's - best burritos I've ever had
[–]Howsmydirktaste 2 points3 points4 points 9 months ago
Please, you may have a ton of atheists, but you're state is still fucked to hell. Fix your budget before you call others ignorant
[–]FionaTheHuman 2 points3 points4 points 9 months ago
Southern California you say? Drive on up here to the Central Valley and enjoy our little bible belt here.
[–]Axxerand 1 point2 points3 points 9 months ago
Harold Camping...

[–]iturner82[S] 0 points1 point2 points 9 months ago
That's how I feel, I'm a senior in high school and throughout my entire education I've never had a teacher that tries to give us Creationism
[–]asleeplessmalice 1 point2 points3 points 9 months ago
Im in a little town called Hemet in the Inland Empire....and such numb-skullness is wide spread here. Mostly due to the median age being something like 60. So nearly every family is religious, and they breed that into their children. Man, I want to move to the coast. Or Seattle. Or back to where I was born, in Bellingham. sigh
[–]vecnyj 1 point2 points3 points 9 months ago
I'm from PA, and really I don't see much stupidity here as far as Young Earth Creationists. I'm from a nice area though, with generally intelligent people who know how old the Earth is.
[–]weavile22 1 point2 points3 points 9 months ago
Pretty much how I feel as a European too. No one here would even think of telling his biology teacher that he is wrong about evolution and a god created us.
[–]imtoosexyformysock 1 point2 points3 points 9 months ago
I live in Orange County, so it's still pretty bad around me
[–]Skarmotastic 1 point2 points3 points 9 months ago
Everything in Texas is fucked up. Even our water is green.
[–]vwboyaf1 1 point2 points3 points 9 months ago
There are a lot more people living in liberal areas of the United States than there are living in the bible belt. Vermont remains the top non believer state in the Union.
sorry but don't you still have the death penalty in california?
[–]Dueada 1 point2 points3 points 9 months ago
Does it bug anyone else that there is no question mark?
[–]ilagitamus 1 point2 points3 points 9 months ago
Hey man, Vermont's the least religious state in the union! So we're great up here.
[–]Freikorp 1 point2 points3 points 9 months ago
Haha, this post reeks of girls on facebook posting shit like ~~CAN'T IMAGINE LIVIN ANYWHERE ELSE BUT CaLi!!!!~~~~
Oh yeah coming from the state that passed prop 8...
[–]TedTheGreek_Atheos 1 point2 points3 points 9 months ago
Are you kidding me? you never heard of Orange County? there is plenty of christian crazy in CA.
[–]Knight of /newHypersapien 1 point2 points3 points 9 months ago
Of course not.
It's only something like 20 or 30.
[–]hurler_jones 1 point2 points3 points 9 months ago
No, we just aren't as arrogant as you.
[–]kr10101 1 point2 points3 points 9 months ago
Northern Californian here. I think CA follows the same general rule that the more south you go,the more conservative the place tends to be. Southern CA tends to be more conservative than Northern Californians though we as a whole state do seem to be one of the most liberal states.
[–]Anticipator1234 0 points1 point2 points 9 months ago
Most everywhere along the CA coast, people are more liberal, with the exception of OC, SD and Ventura. Inland is much more conservative.
[–]bren22 1 point2 points3 points 9 months ago
Yah, but in Oregon there are still religious nuts who refuse all notions of science or evolution, or global warming. Like Klamath county, or east Portland.
[–]Dr_Drunk 0 points1 point2 points 9 months ago
East Portland? The fuck are you talking about?
[–]voodoochild1997 1 point2 points3 points 9 months ago
I live outside of a town called Red Bluff (about 30 minutes south of Redding) in Northern California. When I ride my motorcycle down the I-5, I've counted at least 5 religious signs. One is actually a semi-truck (lorrey) trailer with a mural of Jesus' hand nailed to a cross (about 50' {23ish meters}long).
[–]1000corgis 1 point2 points3 points 9 months ago
this is pretty true, you cant be an open christian here without ppl thinking you are totally stupid.
[–]Ahueh 0 points1 point2 points 9 months ago
Relevant
[–]jargoon 0 points1 point2 points 9 months ago
Ugh there are parts of CA that are that way... That's why Prop 8 passed (I mean aside from the Mormon Church funding
[–]promethius_rising 0 points1 point2 points 9 months ago
I agree with the sentiment, except for your southern California part... You're saying that coming from an area famous for gang members with christian tattoos who enjoy killing people... It's all 50.
[–]EatThyStool 0 points1 point2 points 9 months ago
Live in central Ohio, we just finished building a $5 million church for $8 million. It isn't a big deal though, really, because soup kitchens can wait, along with our homeless shelters, public school art and sports, free childrens summer camps for low income families, and free lunches for kids with low income families. Oh, that's right, WE ABANDONED MOST OF THIS LAST YEAR... so yes I agree with Picard. Oh yeah, the priests also found extra money to build a new rectory, which cost another $800,000.
[–]tcb98 0 points1 point2 points 9 months ago
YES.
[–]fuckiswrongwyou 0 points1 point2 points 9 months ago
transplanted from Orange County CA to just outside Nashville TN...i would take the worst places in CA over this shithole any day of the week
I'd rather be dead in California than alive in Arizona.
[–]foxylectro 0 points1 point2 points 9 months ago
Well I live in Santa Clarita, and there's tons of racist and redneck bigots out here. And I work in Hollywood where there are a ton of people who have weird Hindu-related belief systems or are really into astrology. Then from what I've noticed working in retail, people in both places don't understand how to pay with a credit or debit card. People are pretty dumb out here too.
[–]mrcloudies 0 points1 point2 points 9 months ago
Northwest Michigan is pretty good. Decent economy, lots to do, large Atheist population. Don't venture any lower though.. Grand rapids, Traverse City, Ann Arbor and a few smaller towns are the few shining beacons in an otherwise shitty ass state.
[–]Ampid 0 points1 point2 points 9 months ago
How is it that Southern California is one of the best, but Arizona is one of the worst?
[–]dickiebanner 0 points1 point2 points 9 months ago
im from San Diego and i agree to an extent. youve gotta go kinda far to dip into some real nonsense. although there is that giant mormom church off the 163
[–]Dominant_Peanut 0 points1 point2 points 9 months ago
Hey, NY is generally ok.
[–]Wacocaine 0 points1 point2 points 9 months ago
About South Californians. By Southern Californians.
[–]ohdoylerulez90 0 points1 point2 points 9 months ago
I'm in SoCal and I've hardly ever come across many atheists. In fact, I know more of your typical christians than I do anything else.
[–]1trull2many 0 points1 point2 points 9 months ago
Sweet! If California's doing it, the other 47 are soon to follow. (Hawaii and Alaska can keep doing its thing and go fuck itself, respectively)
[–]ClassicAsFuck 0 points1 point2 points 9 months ago
Yes from Indiana!
[–]BipolarBear0 0 points1 point2 points 9 months ago
Colorado (urban areas) are pretty relaxed about it, and so is NorCal if you've ever been there. Most of the western United States are okay when it comes to religion, except for Texas and a few others.
[–]Franzo208 0 points1 point2 points 9 months ago
Sandusky, OH here, as far as I can tell, I don't see it all that often. While I do know a few churches near me, I don't know anyone that goes to them personally. My parents stopped going a while ago and before that they stopped dragging me and my brothers along. As far as I know I don't see that much religion getting pushed around town. I know most of Ohio has trouble, but up here at Cedar Point I don't see that much.
[–]Garriganpielax 0 points1 point2 points 9 months ago
The north east is pretty good also
[–]chiefredeyes27 0 points1 point2 points 9 months ago
I am from southern california(highdesert) as well. Worst I get is the occasional mormon knocking on our door.
[–]birdmansenior 0 points1 point2 points 9 months ago
Manhattan here... I get the same feeling!
[–]Not_The_Pope 0 points1 point2 points 9 months ago
Moved from SoCal to Georgia... Ignorance is a commodity here!
[–]raverriku 0 points1 point2 points 9 months ago
On the Prop 8 thing: If you all move here to CA, we can fix it next time it's on the ballet. And you get to live in California.
I've lived in L.A. nearly my entire life. We have plenty of religious whackaloons, but with so many people and so much space, nobody gives a shit what anyone else believes. We are also totally self-absorbed.
[–]michael145 0 points1 point2 points 9 months ago
Yeah, as a New Englander this post confused me. California might have some well known liberal regions, but as a whole I recall it passing Prop 8. I know it's argued that it was Mormons flooding the state with money, but it was still Californians voting. So, no, in fact some states are much better than California in that regard. Subtract from that tally of 49 at least New England and New York.
[–]TheBigGinge 0 points1 point2 points 9 months ago

[–]TheParkwayDrive -1 points0 points1 point 9 months ago
From Riverside county... A small town described as the speck of Red in a sea of blue (Cali). -_- hahaha Everyone's super christian/mormon here.
[–]TheAlbatross 1 point2 points3 points 9 months ago
The rest of California looks at Riverside and the high desert and wonders the same as OP...
[–]Delror -1 points0 points1 point 9 months ago
Yeah that's accurate. More specifically, I'm from Norco, if you know it. Tiny little horse town with dirt roads. Redneck trucks EVERYWHERE.
[–]EnglishMobster 0 points1 point2 points 9 months ago
I know the feeling.
Moved from San Bernadino County to Riverside County.
Suddenly, Mormons. Mormons everywhere.

[–]r4engstr 0 points1 point2 points 9 months ago
Until you see the giant churches in Orange County. And hear people at work constantly talking about god, their church, everything is god's will, etc.
[–]khast -1 points0 points1 point 9 months ago
I wouldn't necessarily say California is all that intelligent either...look at your budget. Oh and you guys actually let Prop 8 pass? Maybe before criticizing everyone else, why not look into the problems you have there first?
It was appealed at least.
[–]XsimonbelmontX -1 points0 points1 point 9 months ago
As someone who was born in West Virginia, near the Pennsylvania border, and who now lives in Ohio...I can say yes. If these 3 states are any indication...yes they are.
Yucaipa in the house! ( pretty damn ignorant 'round here though)
