If you touch them end on, they're sharp, but if you pick it up with the spines flat across your palm, they're fine. When they get scared, they curve their back to make the spines stick out more.

I've usually picked them up with gloves or a big leaf as protection for my hand, as they can carry a lot of diseases

Their spines are much closer together so they're not as stabby as porcupines but they are still prickly.

Unlike porcupines hedgehogs can put their quiles down and they can raise them if they feel threatened but if they're calm they're quiles have a soft feeling to them I have one he's 6 months old

Do you have a daily routine with him? Hedgehogs, like human babies, do better when they know what's going on, and keeping a daily routine makes them very happy.

Every evening, without fail, bring your hedgehog out of his cage, put him on your lap in a blanket, and feed him 3-4 mealworms. Then just hold him in your lap for an hour or so while doing something quiet.

Yes, hedgehogs are definitely not good pets for the vast majority of students. They hate loud noises and love routine, which is pretty much the antithesis of life in college.

They can be fairly anti-social if you don't work really hard to socialize them. They are technically nocturnal, so it can be difficult.

My mother had one of these and let it roam the apartment when she was in her early 20's. When she met my dad he freaked the fuck out when he almost stepped on it on his way to the bathroom. Cute as hell though.
