Over-and-under 12 gauge.

For what it's worth, that definitely has a good bit of kick, she's no pansy. Over-and-unders are particularly brutal because there's no moving bolt to absorb the recoil like in a semi-auto and they don't weigh as much either (fewer parts = less metal = less mass) which also makes the recoil worse.

When I shoot more than a dozen rounds in a semi-auto 12 gauge I'll usually have a bruised shoulder for the next couple days. She probably practices every day and shoots a hell of a lot more than a couple dozen rounds, and probably goes home with a black-and-blue shoulder every day. Tough girl :)

[–]ChinaCup 17 points18 points ago

I must say I find your shoulder weak. I've shot 2 rounds of skeet and a round of five stand all in a row with an over and under 12 gauge. Perhaps you should adjust your stock placement?

EDIT: without getting bruised.

[–]mirite 5 points6 points ago

Heavy load slugs vs. bird shot? In any case, technique is probably to blame.

[–]Introcity 0 points1 point ago

I've shot an 8 bore, but 12 does give some kick! Solid slug is illegal in the UK, but I'm generally alright with 32gram #5 shot if that means anything?

[–]areasonforliving 1 point2 points ago

I concur sir. I'll shoot all day in the back yard and walk away with nothing more than a light tenderness. Also maybe double check your stance and posture.

[–]Kehrnal 0 points1 point ago

Also, butt plate.

[–]ryanman 3 points4 points ago

Yeah it may be off topic, but you really need to work on your stock placement and technique if that's the case man. I still think women shooting is sexy as hell but I've shot 100's of rounds through a side by side with no ill effects.

[–]TransAm 2 points3 points ago

Over under will have pretty much the same as a pump.

[–]smoothlikejello 1 point2 points ago

Over-and-unders are particularly brutal because there's no moving bolt to absorb the recoil like in a semi-auto and they don't weigh as much either (fewer parts = less metal = less mass) which also makes the recoil worse.

You've never shot a good trap or skeet over-under, have you? They tend to be heavy, which helps, and the good ones have stuff like vials of mercury in the stock that absorb even more.

[–]FishFuzz99 0 points1 point ago

It may not have a bolt, but those target shotguns have like 28-34 inch barrels. They weigh plenty to dampen the recoil, although I am not sure what rounds they use.

[–]tacooftwister22 0 points1 point ago

Actually over-and-unders are the easiest on recoil, especially since there usually expensive shotguns, ranging $2000+ with padding that gives it less of a kick than a pellet rifle. I stopped getting bruised shoulders after 1-2 years of trap shooting, I guess your just not holding it right. And I use semi-autos, pump, break-barrels and over and unders.

[–]NormanConquest 0 points1 point ago

Men who can shoot lose 10

[–]Robberoooo 111 points112 points ago

Amazingly timed picture.

[–]Mescallan 99 points100 points ago

I used to be a ref for skeet/sporting clays/trap based games. It is a beautiful picture, but the photographer probably had between 100 and 300 chances to take this shot.

Honestly I'm just going to rant here because this was my job through high school, I haven't been around a shot gun in about 2 years now, and I can safely say, just looking at this makes me mind numbingly bored. Great game if your playing it, but always tip your trapper. /r

[–]rampant_calvinism 39 points40 points ago

I did the same job through high school, never got tipped once. This is by guys who had 7 grand worth of guns sitting on 30 grand worth of tailgate, 20 years ago.

[–]Mescallan 7 points8 points ago

I was lucky enough to work at a private shooting range where the standard was $5 for every round of sporting clays. Skeet you had to work for it though.

[–]modsherearefags 8 points9 points ago

Nice gun she has. Did the people with nicer guns tip better? Over under tip better than pump or side by side? Basically rank the best tippers.

[–]Mescallan 10 points11 points ago*

Best tippers were the sporting clays guys because it's a bunch of Good ol' Boys practicing hunting; between $5 and $10 for a 2 hour round was average. Skeet shooters were the worst. Rarely ever tip for an average of 8 rounds over 2-3 hours. And constantly asking for help/advice/spotting, and some trainers will tell their students not to tip because it's an unfair advantage for the people who can't afford it. Load of bollocks. I'm standing perfectly still in the blinding hot summer sun pressing a button every 30 seconds for $7 an hour. It cost me 1 hour of work every week just to afford sunscreen.

[–]xampl9 7 points8 points ago

Skeet shooters will also save their hulls with a zeal approaching two fat women fighting over the last box of Pop-Tarts.

[–]Mescallan 0 points1 point ago

Oh god, we used to sell hulls out of our trunks at tournaments. Made so much money.

[–]armstrong182 4 points5 points ago

Same story here. I worked for a smallish gun club for years during school & college and worked mainly on DTL & Skeet. Incredibly boring job and terrible pay and during the winter it sucked. Which gun club did you work for?

[–]Mescallan 4 points5 points ago*

The Detroit Gun Club. I was blessed at working for the highest rated club in the nation (US) so the tips weren't non-existent. I'll still complain though. Where were you?

[–]skarface6 11 points12 points ago

From what I've read on reddit, isn't all of Detroit a gun club?

[–]Kalmah666 5 points6 points ago

Yeah but this is a gun club inside a gun club... for elite gangstuhs only

[–]Mescallan 2 points3 points ago

Haha too true. The DGC was in the 'burbs though. But yes the inner city is basically a third world nation that pays American taxes.

[–]BuckeyeBentley 0 points1 point ago

Psh, inner city Detroit doesn't pay American taxes because you don't pay taxes on drug money.

[–]armstrong182 2 points3 points ago

Spennymoor Gun Club (England). I say that they're small, but we get a lot of England's shooters come for the competitions and we've had a few European championships. I've got a load of great memories from the place but they were mainly from the friends i made there than the actual shooting.

[–]larriot 0 points1 point ago

I used to pick up the cases at a huge range in Dorset. I loved the job. I got to play with the owner's awesome dog all day, and he was a nutter that let me shoot guns from his store I'd never be able to afford. Some really nice guns!

[–]AsskickMcGee 0 points1 point ago

Hey, I grew up shooting at Multi-Lakes (in Walled Lake, about 60 miles from Detroit). My dad and I only shot skeet and he always tipped the trapper a couple bucks per round. We were usually the only non-members playing, and usually the only tippers.

Fast-forward years later, and none of the guys can convince their kids to do the job anymore. Everyone just operates their own rounds. In all fairness, it seems pretty easy when you're only doing it for a couple rounds at a time, and switching off between people. I imagine it gets a lot worse when you do it for 4 or 5 hours straight.

[–]AppleDane 1 point2 points ago

Now that you're here, why is it called "trap" shooting? This conjures up images of aiming guns at trapped animals, but I'm sure there's a reason it's called that.

[–]crassnlewd 12 points13 points ago

Probably from the days when they used live pigeons in traps.

[–]trollindirteh 5 points6 points ago

yes

[–]TrouserPudding 7 points8 points ago

It's called trap shooting because it was originally pigeons being released from a trap. That's also why it is customary to yell "PULL" when you want your next "bird" (someone used to have to pull a rope to open the trap.

Now every place I've played trap just has a microphone in front of each stand. You can say whatever you want and it releases a bird. No need for anyone to do it...just to reload the thrower in the trap house.

[–]AppleDane 12 points13 points ago

"You can say whatever you want and it releases a bird."

Oh man, I would so abuse this.

"Next sucka!"
"Eat lead!"
"This rape train has no brakes!"
"Fly, my pretties!"
etc.

[–]HighBees 3 points4 points ago

"this rape has no breaks" is my new go to

[–]truestatic 16 points17 points ago

You might try sticking to 'murder train.' Similarly satisfying and used to the same effect, much less chance of setting off any unfortunate emotional triggers. Very few people have horrifying memories of being murdered.

[–]HighBees 1 point2 points ago

I only know one

[–]brightcatseye 0 points1 point ago

Tip your trapper? What does a trapper do? I have no idea on any of this.

[–]Mescallan 1 point2 points ago

Trapper presses the button to throw the clay target. Also gives advice and tips on shooting, carries equipment, basically anything a golf caddy does, but with a substantially greater risk to their health ( chance of being shot, lead poisoning, heat stroke etc.)

[–]wobinidan 0 points1 point ago

At least you weren't working for Dick Cheney.

[–]PBI325 1 point2 points ago

With a Canon 1D MK IV shooting at 10 FPS, it wouldn't really be all that hard tbh.

[–]aakaakaak 2 points3 points ago

I think the best part of the photo is how the shell is damned near perfectly horizontal as its flying through the air. Considering how OCD redditors are this is a major feature of the image.

[–]Styrium 0 points1 point ago

It's really more about the equipment than skill or timing.

When you have a high speed camera (as sports photographers generally do) which can take 100 photos within a couple of seconds, at least one of them is going to be "amazingly timed".

Then you just delete the other 99 and don't tell anyo...wait, fuck

[–]jbond66[S] 75 points76 points ago

I figured since I didn't make it this olympic cycle(wrestling not shooting) might as well give some props to someone who did!

[–]Snoopy7393 6 points7 points ago

There are five ways to score points in a wrestling match:

1) Takedown - (2 points) You score two points for taking your opponent down to the mat and controlling him/her.

2) Escape - (1 point) You score one point for getting away or getting to a neutral position when your opponent has you down on the mat.

3) Reversal - (2 points) You score two points when your opponent has you down on the mat and you come from underneath and gain control of your opponent.

4) Near Fall (Back Points) - (2 or 3 points) You get near fall points when you almost but not quite get your opponent pinned. A near fall (near pin) is when...

  • both shoulders are held for two seconds within four inches of the mat, or...

  • one shoulder touches the mat and the other shoulder is at a 45 degree angle coming down to the mat, or...

  • the wrestler is held in a high bridge or back on both elbows.

If a near fall lasts for two seconds, you get 2 points. If a near fall lasts for 5 seconds, you get 3 points.

[–]PacoTaco42 13 points14 points ago

The suspense about number 5 is killing me.

[–]Pseudo_NMOS 9 points10 points ago

5) Shoot him in the face - (5 points + death) A shotgun is thrown at a random place in the ring, the first wrestler to pick it up and shoot the opponent in the face get the 5 points.

[–]EDosed 2 points3 points ago

There are multiple styles of wrestling. You are describing folk style which is common in high school wrestling and that video was clearly not folk style

[–]Jake32 2 points3 points ago

This is the rules for folk style or collegiate wrestling. In the video above, they are wrestling Greco-Roman, which has a totally different set of rules. In Greco, you can score by:

1) Takedown- (1 point) Taking the opponent down from standing position to their stomach and controlling him/her.

2) Feet-to-back Takedown - (3 Points) A thrown or well executed takedown that results with the opponents back past 90º on the mat is 3 points. Also, the ref can award an appreciation point if the throw is a good enough move.

3) Near Fall - (2 points) Different than collegiate in that all you need to do is have your opponent's back break 90º. A move like a gut wrench, shown in the video when the man on top locks his hands and rolls over, earns 2 points because the opponent rolls all the way across his back.

4) Pin - (Automatically winning the match) Another way Greco is different than collegiate is that in stead of waiting 3 seconds with the opponent having both shoulders on the mat, the ref calls a pin instantly if an opponent is held on his/her shoulders.

In Greco-Roman, you cannot touch your opponents legs or use your legs to hook your opponent with. Your opponent is awarded a point if you break this rule.

Finally, in Greco, there are no escapes: after 15 seconds with one wrestler on top, the ref brings them back neutral (standing).

[–]hipsterKeyserSoze 0 points1 point ago

Thank you for that explanation. That sounds like it would be hard to judge.

[–]Snoopy7393 8 points9 points ago

Why would you link a video of him losing? That's just cruel.

[–]Pfired 0 points1 point ago

Hey, showing him in the Bronze match of the qualifiers, that's a good run. But you're right, so here he is getting a take-down and turn in the quarters of the 2012 Pan-Am Championships.

[–]FeierInMeinHose 2 points3 points ago

His famous what?

[–]fohacidal 4 points5 points ago

Woops, I never make that mistake D:

[–]FeierInMeinHose 9 points10 points ago

[–]fohacidal 11 points12 points ago

Nah, Ill correct the grammar as far as that, anything else takes too much effort.

[–]kamikazewave 8 points9 points ago

Look Jack, you should really apologize for that thing you did. As far as I know they're still pretty pissed at you and they certainly won't just forget about it.

[–]theElegantWorm 5 points6 points ago

I heard he showed up at a high school prom and raped a girl

[–]dmsheldon87 1 point2 points ago

I heard he once put an opponent's wife's hand in a jar of acid. at a party.

[–]Gyro88 3 points4 points ago

Not sure if you know him, but my high-school wrestling teammate Ellis Coleman is headed to London for Greco-Roman at 60kg. I'm pumped to watch this summer.

[–]jbond66[S] 10 points11 points ago

I was training with him about a month ago at the olympic training center in colorado.

[–]AllenGinsberg 3 points4 points ago

Are you Canadian? I think I wrestled against you in Saskatoon.

[–]LadyCheeba 2 points3 points ago

I've always wanted to wrestle Allen Ginsberg...

[–]jbond66[S] 1 point2 points ago

Yup

[–]Y0urMom 6 points7 points ago

USA? I watched the end of the qualifying matches while waiting for hockey to come on this weekend.

[–]susuhead 61 points62 points ago

Christ, she's achingly beautiful.

Yeah, I have a thing for over-unders.

[–]Sandmanifest 3 points4 points ago

Aye, it's such a shame I was so young when my grandfather passed. He had a stunning over-under that could've easily been mine, but I hadn't gotten into firearms at that point. Sucks he couldn't see me get older and grow a passion for it, and there aren't many other people in my family that are into that sort of thing. He was only in his 50's. Lucky I still have his Buck Special that I use regularly.

[–]MetastaticCarcinoma 5 points6 points ago

I told my step-grandfather about my recent induction into clay shooting (as an excuse to exercise my Saiga 12)... he ranted about semi-auto's being "very dangerous" and swiftly offered to GIVE ME his old collection...! He was a goddamn surgeon with those - hitting 99/100 clays in tournaments.

I talked my way into a few grand worth of free guns. \o/

[–]Sandmanifest 1 point2 points ago

Haha that's awesome! Of course you better still have the Saiga.

[–]susuhead 0 points1 point ago

I'm with Sandmanifest, you'd better still have the Saiga!

But I do really have a thing for a solid O/U with extractors. Nothing like puling two quick shots and dropping the barrel and having the shells fly out.

[–]susuhead 0 points1 point ago

I had a grandfather like that too. Merchant navy sailor, won a Fairbairn-Sykes commando knife off an SAS guy in a bet, had a bunch of guns, got me into shooting and hunting and stuff like that.

He died when I was 11, but I got the bug. Sometimes I think about how much of a kick it would be if he was around to go hunting with me.

[–]mikeybender 5 points6 points ago

Stealing a turn of phrase from Stephen King, eh? I'm onto you, mister...

[–]susuhead 0 points1 point ago

I'm afraid I don't follow...

I mean, I know he's a writer who dissed the shit out of Stephanie Meyer, but your comment has confused me.

[–]travisca 44 points45 points ago*

Well, here is the Beijing Bronze winner, USA's Corey Cogdell

[–]nebnodlew 28 points29 points ago

Isn't she dating some 3rd string defensive tackle for the Broncos?

[–]jooze 123 points124 points ago

That's pretty specific...

[–]Wollff 31 points32 points ago

I would certainly tackle her 3rd string defensive Bronco, if you know what I mean.

[–]trakam 78 points79 points ago

..that will be her boyfriend

[–]NBAallstar 21 points22 points ago

[–]Manlet 5 points6 points ago

Please explain. In detail. For science.

[–]CIA_Informant 21 points22 points ago

I think he wants to play football with her, for some reason.

Personally, I'd prefer to have sex with her.

[–]dohtem 7 points8 points ago

different strokes for different folks

[–]nebnodlew 1 point2 points ago

Here is her boyfriend Mitch Unrein

[–]grepe 1 point2 points ago

i like that one more

[–]seamusokitty 0 points1 point ago

My friend shoots with her. He also shoots for the US Olympics.

[–]YouLostTheGame 36 points37 points ago

"Like a boss" is one of those phrases that never fails to make me cringe.

[–]CowFu 37 points38 points ago

Dude, it's just a little spelling mistake, he meant bau5 don't need to ream him over it.

[–]mm4ng 3 points4 points ago

im working on a side solo indy projekt called deadbau5.

real minimal stuff that draws inspiration and jelly from jam bands, dubstep, the dead, mozart, and cypress hill, and brian eno.

[–]Aiskhulos 3 points4 points ago

"Like a sir" is what gets me. "Sir" isn't even a noun!

[–]NoNeedForAName 2 points3 points ago

That, and there's no way to tell if she's doing anything "like a boss" in this picture. Sure, qualifying for the Olympics is pretty bosslike, but to qualify like a boss implies that she's a boss among bosses. I see no evidence of that in this image.

[–]GrantSolar 1 point2 points ago

I don't even see which part of this is done "like a boss"

[–]haiku_robot 3 points4 points ago

"Like a boss" is one

Ah, so I see Lara Croft will be competing. Quite good.

[–]_Summerbreeze_ 3 points4 points ago

Oh, another Slovakia related post did it to frontpage? I am pleased!

[–]willscy 0 points1 point ago

[–]epicphoton 8 points9 points ago

You're all welcome. I just recently got interested in shooting sports, and the athletes here are really amazing to watch.

[–]Doylemetheus 0 points1 point ago

It's a great... genre.... of sport. I have always been interested in it due to my dad being a long-range target shooter. He is attempting to qualify for the Commonwealth Games in August, best of luck to him.

[–]archontruth 2 points3 points ago

Hold on a second. There's an Olympic event that involves hot women and shotguns? Why the fuck are they wasting so much time with lanky dudes running in circles?!?

[–]nebnodlew 3 points4 points ago

I am more of a fan of Haley Dunn. She is currently ranked #1 in the US in women's trap shooting.

[–]Brotherauron 9 points10 points ago

[–]tofagerl 76 points77 points ago

No, she's actually a runner, which makes the shotgun a very effective way of qualifying.

[–]hatyn 11 points12 points ago

Can you use a machine gun? Do you have to use your country's native weapon? Can you run and gun? Can you akimbo 2 machine guns? Can you use google glasses with targeting aim bot overlay?

[–]sastrone 18 points19 points ago

Maybe the Olympics has VAC to prevent aimboting.

[–]cheddarz 1 point2 points ago

Dude, please do an AMA! If it doesn't take off in r/IamA, definitely take it to r/guns. Because us r/guns folk would freak out. (in the good way)

[–]YFC 1 point2 points ago

Have you ever seen any interest in an Olympic IPSC/IDPA/USPSA type event? Skeet and air rifle events always seemed a little boring to me compared to the more dynamic shooting you see in three-gun, limited and open classes, etc.

I know there are non-American branches of these organizations, but I'd hazard a guess that more restrictive gun laws in other countries would inhibit proper training for many Olympians. Is this anywhere on the mark, or is there just a lack of interest of adding anything new?

[–]jasmaree 2 points3 points ago

Apparently my definition of "skeet shooting" is incomplete.

[–]dwerg85 2 points3 points ago

Yup, like slavac said. Also .22 pistol and rifle and .177 air rifle and pistol.

[–]miss_fits 1 point2 points ago

I really don't understand why sports like this are still separated by sex.

[–]jonsayshello 2 points3 points ago

Shooting wasn't separated by gender until a woman won, then the International Shooting Sport Federation got all insecure about the size of their dicks and separated them.

[–]WreckerCrew 1 point2 points ago

Because of periods....

[–]devilsadvocated 7 points8 points ago

Skeet skeet skeet

[–]Faloran 2 points3 points ago

A cheerleader tried telling me that cheer leading is a sport but shooting events aren't.

[–]DerpMatt 2 points3 points ago

I am surprised they are even allowing these events. They have made the target shooting one nothing more than fucking laser tag.

[–]Kruse 1 point2 points ago

Stop with the "like a boss" shit already.

[–]jbond66[S] 1 point2 points ago

Well the Olympic website where I got the pic was incorrect then. Thanks for the correct info!

[–]devindinapoli 0 points1 point ago

I'm curious: what gun is that?

[–]Trevsweb 0 points1 point ago

Fuck you woolwich for getting the shooting event. This should've been held at Bisley where The real uk people shoot! Also woolwich is local to me and this event makes getting to my local hospital harder. Srsly f u olympics

[–]britkid49 0 points1 point ago

[–]thinsoldier 0 points1 point ago

What are the chances that more of the events from the X-Games will ever become Olympic events?

[–]JkOverlord 0 points1 point ago

Is there a larger version of this? I'd like it as a wallpaper.

[–]i_no_like_u 0 points1 point ago

Silly woman, they don't allow guns in England.
