Creed Bratton on homosexuality (i.imgur.com)
submitted 4 months ago by DatsNos
[–]sohfix 14 points15 points16 points 4 months ago
This isn't Creed Bratton on homosexuality. This is Creed Bratton on indiscriminate fucking.
[–]DatsNos[S] 4 points5 points6 points 4 months ago
This quote/scene is in direct reply to the outing of Oscar as a homosexual. Its in the "Gay Witch Hunt" episode, in season three. But you're also right.
[–]sohfix 1 point2 points3 points 4 months ago
I know, but he is rarely on topic.
[–]DatsNos[S] 2 points3 points4 points 4 months ago
Ooooooooooooooooh, okay, gotcha. Yeah, actually, that's one of the reasons I love him so much. I guess I never really thought about how left field he was.
[–]redstar_wb 141 points142 points143 points 4 months ago
What does this have to do with Atheism?
[–]cristalmighty 33 points34 points35 points 4 months ago
I've been wondering that same thing. Lately there seems to be a lot of posts made to /r/atheism that could be made to /r/ainbow or somewhere else.
[–]Got_Engineers 12 points13 points14 points 4 months ago
or r/funny.
[–]Elementium 63 points64 points65 points 4 months ago
When you create a sub-reddit about the idea of believing in nothing it tends to get old quick.
We supplement our lack of content by posting things loosely related to religious oppression. Also /r/atheism can be seen as a Reddit for people with that in common to simply joke around and be in an environment where they know they aren't alone.
[–]niczar 1 point2 points3 points 4 months ago
You're mistaken, this sub-reddit is dedicated to posting Facebook screenshots. The OP is puzzled because this does not show the Facebook logo or layout.
[–]aazav 1 point2 points3 points 4 months ago
It's not about "believing in nothing".
I think you miss the point. Once you see the bullshit, it's about what you can now do with your life and what you can accomplish.
[–]Rockknight 4 points5 points6 points 4 months ago
So there's no point for the subreddit to exist?
[–]graingert 14 points15 points16 points 4 months ago
You missed the point more than java
[–]feilen 6 points7 points8 points 4 months ago
Sorry, I'm afraid I'm going to have to steal this expression.
[–]ThatIsMyHat 1 point2 points3 points 4 months ago
Me too. Shit, I will race you.
[–]graingert 0 points1 point2 points 4 months ago
Java missed the point so much it has no pointers
[–]sexual_in_your_end_o 37 points38 points39 points 4 months ago
If you think about it, there's no reason for atheism to exist. If people would quit making up weird cults then we wouldn't need to not believe in them.
[–]Fly18 0 points1 point2 points 4 months ago
If you think about it, there's no point in anything existing. The only purpose we have are the ones we give ourselves. The only purpose anything else has are the ones we give them. In the end, what are we really achieving?
[–]feilen 9 points10 points11 points 4 months ago
Well, there's always cheese...
[–]windfall259 3 points4 points5 points 4 months ago
And Swedish massages.

[–]daren_sf 2 points3 points4 points 4 months ago
We are the universe experiencing itself.
[–]sexual_in_your_end_o 1 point2 points3 points 4 months ago
In the end, what are we really achieving?
Nothing, but I've been dead for an infinite amount of time before I was born and I'll be dead for an infinite amount of time after I die. Might as well make use of this small sliver of consciousness I happened to stumbled into.
To be dead you would have to live first. Death is the absence of life, if there is no life to begin with you are not dead. Therefore, you were non existent before you were conceived.
[–]sexual_in_your_end_o 0 points1 point2 points 4 months ago
Death is the absence of life
So wouldn't this technically mean that I was dead before I was born then?
I meant loss of life. I'm trying to say that you must live before you die. It doesn't matter, you got your point across just fine.
[–]larpas -1 points0 points1 point 4 months ago
What's the purpose of this point of view? It accomplishes nothing, and only makes people feel insignificant.
[–]irjerry3 0 points1 point2 points 4 months ago
It's existentialism and it is very important to modern culture and a lot of atheistic philosophy. It has many consequences philosophically that are still being debated today some of which are things like liberalism, free will, and copious drug use.
I don't really have a choice. That thought, no matter how deep I bury it, will always be there.
[–]apophenic -2 points-1 points0 points 4 months ago
#wow #woah
[–]Elementium 1 point2 points3 points 4 months ago
Bingo. Or rather our ultimate goal is that this subreddit doesn't need to exist. That day will come when people don't think Atheist =Devil worshiper.
[–]ThatIsMyHat 0 points1 point2 points 4 months ago
I've brought this up before but I feel it bears repeating. Using r/atheism to bitch about Christianity is like going to r/chicago to bitch about New York.
[–]Parnass -2 points-1 points0 points 4 months ago
aren't you clever! only your simile doesn't make any sense
[–]redstar_wb 0 points1 point2 points 4 months ago
Well, I can agree with that reasoning. Guess I just came here with the wrong idea of what kind of content would be on here.
[–]windg0d 0 points1 point2 points 4 months ago
So a subreddit about believing in nothing is becoming a subreddit about everything?
[–]Elementium 3 points4 points5 points 4 months ago
Pretty much. The day we can delete this sub-reddit because it doesn't make sense to have it, will be a good day.
[–]xXArisenXx -1 points0 points1 point 4 months ago
The day we can delete religion because it doesn't make sense to have it, will be a good day.

This subreddit has made me slowly hate the gay community.
Not gay people, but the greater group. Same way I wouldn't hate a Nazi soldier who I don't know, but would hate the Nazi party.
[–]Elementium 7 points8 points9 points 4 months ago
Hmm, Interesting. Hate how? Personally the only issue I take with gay communities is the whole parades and "PRIDE" thing. But I'm someone who feels that who you're sexually attracted to has such little meaning it feels strange that people use THAT as something to build a community around.
I'm also not gay so I'm missing a huge chunk of what could be the reason for those things. I suppose it could be like Atheism, a group that shouldn't have any importance in a logical world does because we need to create these things to open people up to the ideas of atheism.
[–]YHWH_The_Lord 5 points6 points7 points 4 months ago
You just asked a question and figured out the answer to it in the same post. Congrats.
Word. I realized as I was writing it too, being a lazy bastard and desperate for conversation I posted it anyway.
[–]apophenic -1 points0 points1 point 4 months ago
it'd be nice if he had the self-awareness to realize he'd done that
Aside from fundies, I can't think of a single community worse than the gay one. Looking at the civil rights movements of the 60s/70s, which may be somewhat romanticized, people were much more calm and rational about much more terrible things.
Back when African Americans had truly suppressed rights and faced much more violence and much more respected opposition, they created a calm and peaceful resistance. A very select few proposed more radical approaches such as leading an exodus, but generally it was a respectable move towards equality.
The gay rights movement seems to be more about bitching and hatred. It focuses on demeaning those who disagree - see the use of "homophobic" - and being as obnoxious about their issue as possible. I see literally no reason to appose gay marriage (and support it), but the avid proponents are just so horribly disagreeable.
The real issue with the movement is how baseless most of the arguments are. It's mostly just shock stuff like "gay away the pray" with a guy annoying fundamentalists with gayness, or asserting that jesus would/does like gay people.
To anyone who was offended, sorry, have a kitten.
[–][deleted] 3 points4 points5 points 4 months ago
Looking at the civil rights movements of the 60s/70s, which may be somewhat romanticized, people were much more calm and rational about much more terrible things.
Considering very few people on Reddit actually lived through the 60s and 70s, I find that is a small chance this comparison you're making holds any ground.
Also, the definition of "terrible things"; we all know about the lynchings of black men and women, the public disgrace many mixed couples received, but I'm not sure you've ever seen the full extent of the hatred that many gay couples receive(d) every day. Many gay men and women have been killed in the past, and many more harassed and beaten in the streets all while the police looked on with an unconcerned eye. For a very long time, a gay person could not get any legal help from anyone because of their social status. Though homosexuals never went through slavery, the denial rights and the process of gaining them is still very real. The status of homosexuals as societal pariahs was, and still is in many places, very real. Gays were never enslaved, but I venture to say that the harassment and killings are all worth something for the public to be startled over.
The same is true for the gay rights movement. It was always a relatively peaceful gathering to overturn law--you should watch Milk. Eez a good movie...
If you're saying this about the gay rights movement, you've probably never been a part of it. Perhaps you do support gay marriage, but I mean, you've probably never met the participants. A lot of this comes from the media's portrayal, and the best way I can answer why is if they can show a bunch of crazy bastards running around acting nuts, they're gonna sell more ad space. I'd also like to point out that the use of "homophobic" as a word used to demonize other people is not unlike the use of the word "racist" today. I believe this is more of a generational thing, as Liberalism has become more commonplace.
If you think the arguments are baseless, then you've probably never heard any. "Gay away the pray" is not what changes legal statutes; it's simply a play on words with a phrase that is popularly touted by the media. Again, all the obnoxious people you see is what people use, not to change law, but to get attention. Media looks for the crazy people so people at home watching pay more attention--"My god, this is what I'm supporting?!" as opposed to rolling footage of two little old lady lesbians who've been living together for 40+ years without their love being recognized legally (for example, taxes change when heterosexual couples get married) while they knit sweaters for their cats.
Real arguments for gay's rights include, but are not limited to:
Equality as a function of society
Rights heterosexual couple's spouses have that a gay couple legally cannot have, such as speaking for one's spouse while they are in a coma, or (in many states) the passage of property is hugely affected by marital status
Adoption--in many states, a homosexual couple cannot have joint parental rights over an adopted child
And many, many, more. Married heterosexuals are given on base housing on military bases, while married homosexuals aren't recognized as married (DOMA) and so do not receive such benefits.
Anyways. Sorry for the length. Have a nice day.
[–]Elementium 0 points1 point2 points 4 months ago
I see. I'm annoyed with those people on an individual level. I'm in Massachusetts so any overly flamboyant guy telling me he's oppressed makes me wonder if he's just moved here. Ofcourse I'm annoyed by alot people..
[–]GoodGuyAnusDestroyer 4 points5 points6 points 4 months ago
It doesn't, this subreddit is odd.

[–]indiejesus 0 points1 point2 points 4 months ago
People like OP assume that all religion or belief in God is directly in conflict with homosexuality.
[–]nerocycle 0 points1 point2 points 4 months ago
I would have said that, only I enjoyed the quote too much to care anymore. :)
[–]RagnarIV 1 point2 points3 points 4 months ago
I think it's because we're far more accepting of homosexuals than religious types and I wonder if this Creed Bratton is an atheist. That would explain why it's here. I did some quick Google searches and I found nothing solid.
[–]apophenic 1 point2 points3 points 4 months ago

This isn't "/r/antireligion" and most sane people are tolerant of homosexuality now, it has nothing at all to do with the lack of belief in a god.
[–]redstar_wb 1 point2 points3 points 4 months ago
I agree but this this does not do anything to further discussions on any matter. Just turns into a office circlejerk.
[–]_Circlejerk_ -1 points0 points1 point 4 months ago
I ask myself this same question a lot, lately. But then I remember that this is Reddit, and 83-87% of its users are gay and live in San Francisco.
[–]arshbjangles 26 points27 points28 points 4 months ago
They really need to make creedthoughts a real website. Creed is the best thing about The Office.

Creed is the master of absurdist humor, like with the identity thief skit. "The last person to steal from Creed Bratton was... Creed Bratton."
[–]americanslang59 6 points7 points8 points 4 months ago
Creed: "Sorry I'm late, boss. What's going on?"
Michael: "Sir, there has been a murdah! And you are a suspect."
Creed: "Okay...Hang on a sec. Let me settle in and I will be right back."
Camera pans to the parking lot with Creed speeding out of the lot.

Creed Bratton 2012
[–]roterghost 12 points13 points14 points 4 months ago
This has absolutely nothing to do with atheism.
An article about gays being oppressed by the religious is one thing.
But this seriously is just pathetic. The fictional character in question isn't even an atheist, or giving a quote that has anything to do with religion.
A shameless "Anybody Else Love The Office?!" circlejerk.
[–]TheShaker 1 point2 points3 points 4 months ago
You don't do it enough justice with your description of the character. He's a character whose sole purpose in the show is to act eccentric and say completely ridiculous things. Surprisingly, these kids still eat it up and try to reference it.
gotta be a lonely circlejerk these days
[–]Got_Engineers 0 points1 point2 points 4 months ago
No, its just a "r/atheism" circlejerk as always
[–]agleis86 3 points4 points5 points 4 months ago
This is one of the most criminally underused characters on TV
[–][deleted] 8 points9 points10 points 4 months ago
Totally disagree. Creed is indeed the best thing about The Office, for sure, but I think part of the reason he works is that they don't overuse him. If we had more of Creed than the random weird shit he says, I think he'd stop being so funny.
[–]agleis86 4 points5 points6 points 4 months ago
There certainly is such thing as overusing a character. This has definitely been done before. Take Aldous Snow for instance. "Forgetting Sarah Marshall" made great use of him. "Get Him to the Greek" gotold after 20 minutes.
Anyway, I digress. There certainly is the possibility to overuse Creed, but currently, there is plenty of leeway to give. If each episode had just one awesome Creed moment, that would be perfect. I don't think he has more than that in most episodes, and in some episodes he doesn't say anything at all. I don't know if you've seen the show lately, but it's not exactly in its golden age. Whenever Creed does have a moment, it's usually far funnier than the rest of the episode combined.
[–][deleted] 0 points1 point2 points 4 months ago
I don't know if you've seen the show lately, but it's not exactly in its golden age.
I do agree with you there. I still watch, but I think the show is desperately trying not to jump the shark. I try to look at it like it's my dying grandpa, you know? It lived a good life and all good shows must end (except The Simpsons, apparently.) Now I'm going to let it die with dignity, and be there with it to the end.
[–]leejs 0 points1 point2 points 4 months ago
Totally agreed, just having him pop out everyone and a while to say something totally messed up is perfect. Using him too much would break the aura of mystery and 'what-the-fuck-itude' built up around him. As much as it would be nice to know more about him it would ruin the character.
[–]nurdboy42 1 point2 points3 points 4 months ago
The few lines he gets are often gold
[–]DiabloIIIII 1 point2 points3 points 4 months ago
This is stolen directly from South Park. Stan's dad described the 70's and the outdoor orgies he had participated in.
[–]bartlesnjames 1 point2 points3 points 4 months ago
Who the hell cares about where this is posted. This is easily the greatest character on the office.
[–]etahme 1 point2 points3 points 4 months ago
That's probably not Creed Bratton the character talking but Creed Bratton the actor/60s rock star.

[–]theryko 0 points1 point2 points 4 months ago
TIL Creed has a last name
[–]notbookies 3 points4 points5 points 4 months ago
It's his actual name, as well. Also, he mentions in an episode that he transfers his debt to someone named William Charles Schneider, which happens to be the actors original name, before he changed it to Creed Bratton.
[–]aazav 0 points1 point2 points 4 months ago
Why the hell are people pushing homosexuality as part and parcel with Atheism?
